Re: Modifying Heavy Armor Master
Yes I know.
So when you take an Even amount of damage, its -2 damage; however when you take an odd amount of damage its only 1 damage reduction.
Surrounded by 4 creatures with [Multiattack 2] dealing (2d6+3 per hit)?
Hit for 2d6+3 damage attack hits me for 10 damage. Becomes 7 damage with HAM. Reduced to 3 damage with resistance. This comes off my 25 Temp HP. 22 Temp HP remain.
They then take 25 point of cold damage from AoA. And also possibly a Hellish rebuke doing another 6d10 if I really want to troll them.
I will Hellish rebuke if I fail the DC 10 Con save to keep concentration on Hex.
Rinse and repeat. You take around 2-5 damage per hit, dealing 25 damage back per hit in return.
Then it's your turn. You kill something and you get 14 (Warlock 9, Fighter 1) Temp HP back in return.

Re: Modifying Heavy Armor Master
I will give to you an explain using paladin as example. At level 11, he gain improved divine smite. Now, he's attacks have +1d8 radiant damage, but b/p/s damage still non-magical. On MM, we have a lot of example with monster dealing 2 types of damage, but b/p/s damage still non-magical. As example we have elementals, giants, vampires, demons, corrupts, even dragons.
Shadow Dragon:
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6) necrotic damage.
Death Knight:
Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 5 ft. , one target. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 5) slashing damage, or 10 (1d10 + 5) slashing damage if used with two hands, plus 18 (4d8) necrotic damage.
Balor:
Magic Weapons. The balor's weapon attacks are magical.
Longsword. Melee Weapon Attack:+14 to hit, reach 10ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d8 + 8) slashing damage plus 13 (3d8) lightning damage.
Others 53 monsters can conjure magic, but has non-magical attacks like Death Knight, Lich, Storm Giant, even Mind Flayer have some type of attack that cause non-magical damage. And, in the case of Death Knight his slashing damage are non-magical, like a bite of Shadow Dragon that don't give piercing magical damage.
Others 82,77% don't have any type of magic or magical damage, but if you don't believe in me, you can see and count by yourself, like I did it.Last edited by Ryuu Hayato; 2018-03-12 at 11:18 PM.

Re: Modifying Heavy Armor Master
I must say that I find that a bit unbelievable.
82,77% of all 441 monsters incapable of dealing damage at all seems odd. Are you sure you counted non-weapon damaging abilities too?
Although, HAM is relevant only against weapon attacks (natural weapons are described as such), so there is some value in those statistics, if accurate.Last edited by Arkhios; 2018-03-12 at 11:43 PM.

The other monsters do not necessarily have to depend on actions that do b/p/s damage. A dragon can use your breath weapon. Or, a wyvern can use your stinger. But let's be fair, a base Barbarian can't tank it either, and it's a class feature vs a half-feat.Last edited by Ryuu Hayato; 2018-03-16 at 07:22 PM.

Re: Modifying Heavy Armor Master
I'd go ahead and add the + of magical armor to it. I'm playing it in the 'every goddamn thing we fight is an ancient dragon' version of Rise of Tiamat, and the DM just shrugged and let it apply to enemy dragons claw/claw/bite and tail slap/wings etc. It could use a buffing.

Re: Modifying Heavy Armor Master
Or just 9% of the MM make your feat useless. Sometimes you'll use more often, sometimes you'll use all the time, sometimes you will not able to use. And, it's okay with that, because you gain +1 on str too, then you don't have to late your build to have a defensive buff. Creatures like tarrasque, kraken and dragons don't overcome the feat.
It's more often apply this feat than tricks like the trip maneuver, or fireball (or every other fire damage spell) at high CR creatures. But, I will not convince you.Last edited by Ryuu Hayato; 2018-03-17 at 01:14 AM.
