What if greenhilt picked a Eldritch Knight for a subclass. what would happen? likely it would be because

"If Rich wanted" he could make Roy anything at all. But he does not want to. He wants to tell a consistent story set in a world were 3.5 rules are laws of the universe.

No, the edition is 3.5; anything that doesn't neatly conform to 3.5 rules is treated as a narrative decision and/or a house rule (depending on how you want to interpret it).

But they've been steadily and explicitly growing in power for a while now.

Also, we know Roy's sword glows because he unlocked its unique powers, so... I'm not sure why his being an Eldritch Knight is even in consideration.

Even though I'm not as familiar with "3.5" WD&D, it seems pretty clear that OotS is based on that version of D&D, what's not clear?

Anyway, since @Darkship mentions "subclass" I'm guessing the 5e "Elritch Knight" is meant, but as far as I know The Giant hasn't done any strips that reference 5e, but Kubota held a 4e book, and in

Snips Snails and Dragon Tales

the Order meets their 4e counterparts.

I'm sure Mr.Burlew could write great material using different editions or compete games as inspiration, but the strip is great as is, so lets not rock the boat.
