Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: Thunder's SearchThunder confidently navigates toward the smoke, using her keen sense of smell to guide her. The terrain here slopes upward at a soft grade. The undergrowth grows thinner as she goes along, less and less she is forced to crawl through thickets and escape the clutches of ghastly brambles. She sees no large sources of water, nor areas of shelter, though there is a clearing with a large rock with a long, decaying log leaned against it. She figures this could be used to make a modest lean to in a pinch, and makes mental note of its location, perhaps leaving small markings on trees with her claws to direct her way back to the spot.
About twenty minutes later, Thunder has reached the source of the smoke. Pushing through a particularly dense blackberry bush, she is astonished to see not the clearing with her friends, but a wide open swath of sky. She is standing near the edge of a small crag in the middle of the forest. The lip of the crag is some hundred or so paces from the tree line. From her vantage, it's hard to say how far down the ground is, she cannot see any trees, which suggests a considerable drop indeed.
The source of the smoke is immediately apparent. Sitting on the edge of the crag is a small hut. It is made of wreathed branches and strange, withered wooden planks. Hides hang on scaffolding around the hut to dry, and a small fire is burning by the opening of the hut. There is no one in sight, but Thunder cannot easily make out the interior of the hut from this distance in the light of the now setting sun.Last edited by gabado; 2018-03-27 at 09:13 PM.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
In the clearing, it is beginning to grow dark. Tethys has managed to get a small fire going. The wood here is damn and cold, rather like the driftwood she is used to burning at her old hut. Feeding the flames ferns, moss, and thick, dark leaves produces an acrid, grey smoke that twists up through the canopy high above.
The air has grown cold and dew covers Lomp’s flanks. It has been several hours and there is still no sign of Muun, more troubling, Thunder has yet to return.Last edited by gabado; 2018-03-28 at 07:45 AM.

"This is foreboding. Thunder and Muun should have been back by now. Should we go looking for them?" Pierce is worried. Perhaps this is the Woe Lor told him about.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Tethys tries to hide her growing anxiety, but there is an edge of uncertainty to her voice when she replies. She couldn't remember the last time she hadn't slept without the sound of the surf and it was unsettling. It...it hasn't even been a day yet. We're already down two companions and if we leave in pursuit of one, how will the other know where we've gone?

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: Muun's huntThe forest is dense and imposing. Muun is forced to clamber over large decomposing logs and squeeze between massive, moss-covered boulders. The air is still and cold, his breath makes thick clouds around him.
Within a few minutes of leaving the clearing, Muun finds a promising trail. It looks to be from a medium-sized deer, maybe a young buck! He deftly follows the trail, weaving through the dense ferns and brambles that crowd the forest floor.
After five or six hours, just as dusk begins to settle about the forest, he finally spots his quarry! It is a medium-sized young buck, with beautiful, large antlers freshly molted from the spring. Approaching from downwind, Muun is easily able to land a precise shot, stopping the animal's heart before it hits the ground. It's nice to know he's still got it, it'd been a little while since he'd successfully hunted something larger than a hare.
Eager to get back to his companions, he ties the animal's feet together and throws its warm carcass across his shoulders. Now, to find the way back...
Spoiler: OOCYou'll need to make another survival check to navigate Muun's way back. He was following a trail to find the deer, but it's been several hours and it's starting to get dark, the trail will be more difficult to follow going back in the dying light.Last edited by gabado; 2018-03-28 at 08:30 AM.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Akkila is sitting by the fire.
We shouldn't go wandering in the woods now that it's dark. We will just have to make sure we make the camp as visible as possible for those two to find us. Can we make the fire bigger, and maybe get some sort of lights to float above the treeline? This might attract the wrong sort of attention, but hopefully our companions will be able to find us also.
Spoiler: QuestionWe've been resting here for most of the day, just hanging out probably taking naps to sleep, will we be good to stay awake through the night?

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: answer/oocYes, you're well rested enough to keep vigil through the night, plus the anxiety of being in a strange place and several of your companions missing is enough to keep you up on its own.
To grow the fire, you'll need to find some dry wood, searching around for a time will yield it, and it'll give you something to do, though you are correct that a larger fire and dancing lights above the clearing will attract a lot of attention from the surrounding areas, your call.

Akkila starts looking around the clearing for larger sticks, both dry and wet, dry to make the fire bigger, wet to make more smoke that might be visable to their companions.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: oocyou’re good without the check, there isn’t a time crunch, so you can take as much time as you need to locate the wood.
It is dark by the time Akkila has finished stoking the fire. It is now a healthy blaze, and it’s warmth is a pleasant departure from the fridgid dampness of the surround wilderness. Thick smoke billows up into the trees above, an unfurling shadow in the light of the rising moon.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: Muun's HuntMuun is initially confident, tracing his steps back for a half hour or so. The buck is heavy across his shoulders, but the pride he feels in finding food for his companions pushes him on.
As the last light of day begins to fade, his confidence starts to waver. He starts noticing familiar trees and boulders, there is a sinking feeling in his stomach that he is retracing his steps. This suspicion is confirmed as he ducks through the tangled branches of several saplings and finds himself at the edge of a small lake.
The surface of the lake is calm and smooth, perfectly reflecting the stars now appearing in the darkening sky above. The ground around the lake is blanketed in soft moss and thin grass. Little daisies dot the moss, and several frogs fill the air around the lake with a soft, resonant cacophony of croaks.
Muun is weary from hauling the dead deer through the woods and his stomach rumbles in hunger. It is getting quite dark, and this might be a good place to hunker down for the night before trying to locate the group.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: Muun's HuntThe lake looks very placid and safe, the tree line is far enough back from the bank to afford a clear view of anything sneaking up on him.
Muun breathes deeply, taking in the night air and his heart catches in his throat. His nose has picked up the unmistakeable musk of a bear. It can't be far off, likely upwind from him, so it may not have yet caught his scent.
Looking around quickly, his eyes light upon a large tree growing close to where he emerged from the woods, its roots are knotted and gnarled, twisted around one another making a deep hollow.Last edited by gabado; 2018-03-28 at 09:35 AM.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: Muun's HuntThe hollow is empty and looks large enough for both Muun and the deer. He can now hear the bear, moving through the woods toward the lake, perhaps thirty or so paces down the tree line from the hollow. It is quite large, crushing branches in its path. The frogs have gone silent.
Spoiler: OOCYou can make a hide check to have Muun hide in the hollow. Once hidden, he can take advantage of the skulker feat and either not shoot the bear, seeing what it does and hoping it moves off without noticing him, or attack it, using his assassinate action to get a critical if he hits.Last edited by gabado; 2018-03-28 at 09:52 AM.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: Muun's HuntMuun quickly scoops dirt and decomposing leaves over the dear, then folds himself into the hollow in the trunk of the tree. He is exceptionally well hidden, smearing mud across his face and neck and on the tip of the arrow he knocks in his bow to prevent light from reflecting off of it and catching the bear's eye.
He doesn't have to wait long before the bear enters the clearing. It is massive, standing taller than a man at the shoulder. It is unlike any bear Muun has seen. Its hindquarters, rear legs, and torso are those of a grisly bear, but long, brown feathers sprout from its shoulders, covering its arms and front paws, which end in large, cruel talons. Its head is that of a massive, horned owl. It twists its head to and fro, its large eyes searching the clearing and the lake for potential threats. Finding none, it lumbers toward the water, bowing its head to quaff loudly.
Spoiler: OOCMuun does not know what Owlbears are, they are not common in this world, the sight of it is both majestic and highly disconcerting. If he does wish to attack, roll two attack rolls and one damage roll with sneak attack damage added in. You have advantage on the roll and if you miss both shots, the bear will likely not take notice, due to your skulker feat.

Tethys helps Akkila stoke the fire, grateful for the added light in such a foreboding environment and confident they can tackle any attention it brings together. She makes sure Lomp is tied up safely so he doesn't bolt if there's danger.

Where could they be? What's taking them so long? We needed to stick together. Pierce is very worried now, praying fervently for the safe return of his comrades.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: Muun's HuntThe creature lets out a terrible shriek, reeling onto its hind legs and pawing at the arrow sprouting from behind its right shoulder. Its eyes are wild and its head twists around eyes bulging and searching the surrounding wilderness. It turns toward Muun's hiding location, though it doesn't appear to have spotted him yet. It drops back to the ground and begins to walk slowly his way, its head low and its eyes wide and violent.
Spoiler: OOCit has not spotted Muun but it seems to know which direction the arrow came from, Muun will have advantage on his next attack but will likely become visible to the bear when he attacks. It is still upwind, but as it draws nearer, it will likely pick up his scent.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: Muun's huntThe arrow catches the bear in the left arm, and it screeches in rage and pain. It has spotted Muun and it charges toward him, barreling swiftly through the shallow water and lunging at him with a powerful bite. Its beak is lined with a row of deadly teeth and it snaps at Muun with tremendous ferocity, enraged by its wounds.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Some time passes in the clearing. The group is able to keep the fire going, stoking it as needed and drying logs along side of it to be burned later. The moon is now high overhead, shining a deep rusty red through the billowing smoke.
A sound breaks the worried tension of the clearing. Through the trees, the four companions can hear the sound of a massive creature moving toward them. The heavy beating of hooves and the breaking of branches echoes from the darkness.

Re: [dnd 5e] Skaldlands (IC)
Spoiler: Muun's HuntDropping his bow, Muun draws his short sword and plunges it to the hilt into the beast's throat. Arterial spray covers him, causing him to sputter and choke in the red mist surrounding him. The bear collapses on top of him, crushing him into the hollow under its caustic weight.
He is grievously wounded. The bear's toothed beak had lacerated his left shoulder and he's fairly certain its claws broke a few ribs. Pinned under its bulk, he can't help but feel a bit proud, he went head to head with a mighty creature and lived!.
Spoiler: OOChe'll need to make a strength check to pull himself out from under the bear. Muun is very wounded (16 hp dealt during the fight out of his 21 total) but he's alive. an untrained medicine check to asses the damage would be appropriate once he's freed himself from beneath the bear.Last edited by gabado; 2018-03-28 at 11:20 AM.
