I am unclear as to the precise capabilities of the lantern. It seemed to keep Andronicus in a stasis state, but if it made Madwa invulnerable or undetectable or too-fast-to-stop-even-for-Violetta, Agatha and her entire party would have died before they got out of the Library's catacombs.

It's obviously powerful, but if one of the best Smoke Knights alive can't take out a small party even with the aid of the Lantern, there are limits to what it can do.

She may not have figured out how the lantern worked until after she got out of the catacombs.

Madwa is not a Spark, so the figuring out would probably have to be done by someone else. Also, if she did "figure it out" on her own, she may have missed a detail or two. Her last word may well be "oops".

Also, the Lantern was hooked to that Glowy Sphere, which was presumably a power-source, and got hit with the projectile that Violetta threw at it. So Madwa needed to learn how to use the lamp, get a new power-source for it, and possibly repair it. (Or rather get Uncle Tick Tock to do all that..)

Good points have been raised, but I still think it unproven that the Lantern is a "win" button, even in Madwa's hands.

I'm not sure why you're being so skeptical- it's already successfully been used, on the crew of that ship that suddenly found themselves in port.

It worked on a crew of ordinary mortals who had no idea what it was or how to resist it. That's nice, but not proof that it will work on, say, Trelawny and Gil.

Has it been confirmed that it was the lantern and not regular Smoke Knight trickery?

    Yep.

I doubt that shading the description in that direction was accidental by the Foglios, even if Ms. Thorpe doesn't intended that Gil become a permanent exhibit.

This seems like the GG equivalent of a wolf asking a lamb to join him for lunch. Of course, no matter how clever Trelawney or Alba, this is Gil we're talking about, here. People mistake him for a lamb, and he is a lamb--a giant, killer, radioactive, spark-monster lamb (or, as I like to call him, Lambo*).

*Don't give me that look. Like you didn't know it was going there.

You're assuming this is Albia's mirror. Moonbark may have found one of the other mirrors on the Queens' circuit, or one on the Heterodynes' circuit, and brought it back, still active. Hopefully Gil doesn't step - or get pushed - through it.

I wonder if that's what might have happened to Euphrosynia. She fell though one of these in Voltaire's lab, wound up... who knows where? Maybe in Skifander as a gray witch.

As for the stuff in the first panel, apart from the Beast, it's all a reference to a GG sidestory starring Ms. Thorpe which GG colorist Cheyenne Wright did several years back. Warning- my computer always chucks up a content warning when I visit that site.

Did we previously have evidence for the existence and European knowledge of Oceania (other than that oblique reference to the "Downunders"? Because we now know that at least Fiji has been visited.

So Da&Dr has a hand-print scanner, and here we have a full-person identifier.

Can you even imagine what would happen to the poor Empire if they came into GG space? You point a giant, planet destroying ray gun at a world of sparks and they all look up thinking the same thing, "I've got to have that."

Also, humor seems to have its own power in this world. Anakin Skywalker is a lost cause.

    It would be -extremely- onesided.
That the planet still stands shows sparks dont have the technology or gear to make planet destroying stuff. And their planet is not even fully exploret yet.

Still, if GG sparks had the capability to even reach the moon, let alone destroy it (or more likely, carve it into a likeness of their face), someone would have done so by now*. SO I'd agree that the destructive capabilities of Sparks are more-or-less planetbound.

Only semi-canonical, but the first GG print-novel shows that the Other attacked Europan Sparks by dropping large rocks on them from very high overhead, along with swarms of Slaver Wasps. So there's a pretty good chance somebody's gotten up into space.

The moon is often visible in daylight. The moon is not close, it's 1/4 million miles from the Earth.
