    Shota decides being ground bound is not for her. She floats up and past the action below her, drawing one of her blades as she does so. When she touches down she starts hurriedly shovelling earth and after a few seconds the paladin's face becomes visible. She takes a huge gasp, "Thank you!" Relief rapidly turns to horror as she realises she's still surrounded on three sides by undead. I presume Shota quickly reassures the paladin that the bugbear zombie is with the rescuers, but she doesn't seem particularly convinced. It may be that attempting to rescue a paladin with undead was a bad idea.

    Trux does himself a levitate and then blasts down on the mob of zombies. He scores a solid hit against a zombie, but it appears only mildly hurt.

    The mob of 5 zombies in G12-G14 is unimpressed by all these goings on. Don't ask me what it would take to impress them, they're mindless. Between them they manage to connect twice with the paladin who hasn't had a chance to stand up yet and once with Ekius who is also standing too close. Ekius takes 7 damage and the paladin is now bleeding from many wounds on her exposed hands and face.

    The mob of eight zombies closes in on the breach in the barricade, balancing well on the grease, but provoking attacks from both Ekius and Alice. Both warriors strike home but it does little to slow the press of putrid flesh. Two clutch at Alice ineffectively, and two more claw at Ekius clawing away leather bindings and leaving deep scratches through his armour. Ekius takes 7 damage.

    Sylva strikes the northern mob with electrical rays, and the lead zombies falls twitching, the front line blasted back momentarily.

    Aliza adds her weight of fire to the fusilade, and a zombie from the mob of eight dies burning.

    Kaylee directs her troll skeleton to begin slashing and it does so mechanically. It pulls down a zombie and rips its head off. The northern mob is down to three! Then Kaylee starts another summons.


    Cedric doesn't need to move from where he is to threaten a zombie, so he smashes into the larger mob with his glaive. It's a solid strike that batters a zombie heavily but just fails to put it down permanently. Mr Hugsy finds itself unable to dig AND unable to charge, so it moves around the troll skeleton to attempt to do as instructed. But it misses.

    Alice lays about her with her greatsword, but fails to hit with either of her swipes.

    The solitary zombie in I13 fails to hurt her back either.

    Three zombies in the middle continue cowering, still thoroughly rebuked.

    The Paladin finds herself bloodied and in a very uncomfortable situation. She shuffles NW to get away from the zombies without standing, apparently taking a chance that Shota is being straight with her about the larger troll skeleton being on their side for now. That doesn't stop her fixing Shota with determined stare, after which she finally appears relieved. "Sorry, I had to check."

    Then Ekius raises his holy symbol and unleashes obliteration. Every single undead in the square catches a bad case of sunburn to some degree or another. The three nearest zombies in the largest mob are reduced to dust outright, as is the singleton that was fighting Alice. The bugbear gets off slightly better than the troll. The three zombies that were cowering continue to do so, though in worse shape than they were before. It looks as though only seven enemy effectives remain in the battle! Ekius remains above half hitpoints. This clears the way for Ekius to reach the wounded paladin with but a single scratch that doesn't harm him.

    Treat these as simply a load of zombies grouped together for convenience. They're not true mobs. The one benefit they have is that they can squeeze two to a square without any hinderance. On the plus side for the party, damage doesn't get spread out over multiple members of the mob. If you do enough damage to kill a zombie if summed together, then a zombie will be dead. And the ability of a mob reduces as it loses members exactly as if it were individual zombies.

    Kaylee finishes summoning her next undead monster; this time she pulls an owlbear skeleton from the void. She puts it between the zombies and the party, and it starts tearing into the mob. The troll continues to rip into the mobs, and Kaylee herself begins another summoning spell. She isn't sure if this last one will be necessary, but she'd rather be safe than sorry.

    Cedric shakes his head in disbelief. This party may be over-zealous, ill disciplined and self-righteous, but he shouldn't underestimate their ability to destroy the undead. It will be needed, though. The presence of so many different intelligent undead, and the aggression of the zombies, is a certain sign that this is more than a unfortunate burst of necrotic energy; something or someone is behind this. Clearing his mind of these worries, he goes back to dealing with the current zombie threat!

    Sylva sends another blast of electricity into the mob of zombies to help thin the herd, while trying her best to watch the battle. "Bring her over here so I can heal her!" She yells to the group that is defending the paladin.

    Shota hacks at the nearest zombie (H11) and takes its arms off in two neat sweeps of her blade. It collapses in a lifeless heap as the magic animating it dissipates.

    Trux floats NW a bit and does a pew pew! Despite being slightly resisted his eldritch blast causes one more zombie (G13) to collapse.

    The two zombies remaining in G12/13 turn on the obvious attacker, Hugsy the Bugbear Zombie! But their claws fail to penetrate its thick hide.

    The four zombies in I13/14 attempt to close in on Alice, but fail their balance check on Shota's grease and fall in a confused heap.

    Sylva manages to hit the fallen zombies despite their newly prone status, but her electricity bolt causes only minor scorches, less effective than it should be.

    The reduced target profile throws off Aliza however, the scarlet bolts glancing awkwardly off the zombies' thick hides. She steps up a bit anyway.

    Kaylee summons an owlbear skeleton! I guess she puts it in G15 where it's not standing on the grease, yet also threatening enemies and able to attack any that try to move past the barricade. Her owlbear skeleton bites and slashes large chunks out of the closest prone zombie and the troll skeleton is takes full mouthfuls! But neither bony abomination of all that is good and holy manages to reduce the number of fleshy abominations of all that is good and holy. Then she judges that the party has totally got this, so she sits back and waits for the inevitable end (of the zombies).

    Unlike Cedric! He steps forward into the breach and promptly makes sure only three of the fallen and slithering zombies have any hope of getting up again by finishing off the zombie the owlbear skeleton had been mauling. Hugsy on the other hand is ragey but somewhat lacking in accuracy, failing to hit the barely-dodging zombies.

    Alice steps forward to take advantage of the fallen zombies but slips over herself.

    The two remaining cowering zombies continue to cower. It doesn't appear that they're going to stop anytime soon.

    The injured paladin uses her Lay on Hands ability to heal herself, the worst of her wounds closing.

    Ekius surveys the battlefield. There aren't many zombies left considering how many the encounter started with! He determines he can get the best line on the three remaining zombies that have fallen down in the grease and so he moves east until he can breath a line of fire over all three of them! Only one manages to scrabble out of the way and another is consumed by fire.

    Kaylee's summoned undead continue to mindlessly attack their undead brethren. She decides that the situation is near enough to resolved to not cast any more spells; instead, she steps closer to the fight and takes a swing with her glaive. The blade bursts into flame as she attacks, empowered by the magic of Shota's song.

    The fight seeming to be under control, Cedric continues with his handiwork, striking out at a prone zombie with his glaive, looking for a chance to score an extra blow if they try to get back up on their feet. Hugsy, feeling rejected by the other zombies, tries to persuade them to be friendlier by hitting one of them in the face with his morning star (it's not much of an argument, but come on, he's brainless!)!

    There are more posts on the forums about how to nerf T1, than there are posts about T1 characters ruining games. I would say the problem is solved!

    Shota slashes expertly at the closest zombie in H11! She slashes an immolates huge chunks off it to the point where she's unsure how it's still standing. It is very much bloodied. Or ichored. It's a little clotty.

    Trux pierces the zombie in G13 with a bolt of eldritch energy for full effect! It is blasted off its feet and doesn't get up again.

    The zombies near Alice and the owlbear skeleton aren't smart enough to stand up or to focus their attentions, so they claw at their enemies from the floor. The one closest to the owlbear manages to land some claws, but they're barely effective. The zombie attacking Alice can't even connect from its prone position.

    The remaining zombie duelling the bugbear zombie and troll skeleton manages to claw past the troll skeleton's defences. The troll skeleton is barely affected by its claws.

    Sylva chooses to conserve her powers.

    Aliza steps up behind Alice and strikes the one standing non-cowering zombie in G12! Twin bolts of red energy pierce the zombie and it explodes into giblets.

    Kaylee steps forward to try and bag herself a prone zombie! But Aliza and Cedric are currently standing in the breach, and climbing the barricade isn't going to be straightforward so she holds behind them. She didn't have a good feeling about her martial ability at this moment anyway. Her troll skeleton shambles forwards and tears the cowering zombie in H11 in two. The owlbear skeleton tears a chunk off the prone zombie in H14, helping itself to a ripe-looking tricep. The zombie doesn't move after that.

    Cedric smacks the remaining prone zombie with a mighty Thwap! It looks very bloodied. Hugsy claws at the remaining cowering zombie, giving it a serious raking down its face.

    Alice slashes the remaining prone zombie and too stops moving. Only one left.

    Which continues to cower ineffectively.

    The blonde haired paladin considers moving in to help finish off the last zombie, but she'd have to move around the allied undead and she's a bit wary so she steps back instead.

    Whether she were to help or not is swiftly rendered moot as Ekius removes the head of the final cowering zombie with a single swift stroke.

    The fight is over! A few moments later the summoned undead and the grease patch vanish. Cedric, Ekius, Kaylee, Shota, Sylva and Trux get 1150XP!

    "I guess I owe you my thanks." The paladin says as she wipes off her blade, without sheathing it immediately. She's clearly cautious of her rescuers so first she looks firmly at each party member in turn. Satisfied, she sighs and puts her blade away.

    "I can't say I approve of your methods, but I honestly didn't think I was going to survive just now so who am I to judge? Had you not arrived when you did there's no way I could have held that last wave back. The zombies have never breached the barricades before! My name is Ashlyn. The remaining villagers who made it to the square are holed up in the Blood on the Vine just there," she says, gesturing to a building at the NE corner of the square.

    "I expect they'll unbar the door soon now the zombies are vanquished. What brings you to Barovia?"

    In the time remaining for her summoned undead, Kaylee directs them to gather the destroyed bodies of the zombies and pile them up on the barricades. Gruesome, grisly work, so it's all the better to make other undead do it.

    She herself approaches the paladin cautiously, giving the woman a slight curtsy in greeting. The formality looks out of place, given the setting. "I'm glad we were able to help, Ashlyn. My name is Kaylee, and this is Cedric, Ekius, Shota, Sylva and Trux. We'll understand if you don't remember all our names, we were fortunate enough to come here in numbers."

    She gestures to the town. "We were told there was a small problem that needed adventurers. We were certianly not expecting to walk into an undead plague of this magnitude. What happened here? I've never seen necromancy of this magnitude." She sounds awed, rather than afraid. "We'd like to see if we can resolve the source of this problem... and leave with our lives intact, if possible. If we can't stop the plague here, it could spell disaster for this entire region."

    Ashlyn smiles in amusement as Kaylee curtsies formally, but as the young necromancer rises the paladin's eyes widen slightly as she gets a look at Kaylee's face. She blushes slightly and averts her gaze, tucking one of her bangs behind an ear. When she next meets Kaylee's eyes her expression has turned mildly goofy. She hasn't missed Ekius or Trux's words though, and she holds out a hand to shake.

    "Ekius, well met! I didn't think there were any other Lightbringers in the area. Well, apart from Thendrick and Mathilda who came here with me. We were looking for the legendary sunsword which we've tracked to this region. But then the zombies appeared. I pledged to stay here and defend the square as a refuge for the townsfolk whilst Thendrick and Mathilda went to check out the church and it's graveyard to the northwest. The townsfolk believe that's where the zombies arise. But I haven't seen them in three days now and the barricades have been too hard pressed to go after them. I doubt they still live."

    She exhales heavily, blowing upwards to disturb her fringe.

    "You may not have been aware of the scale of our problems, but I'm glad your divinations alerted you all to this curse," she says, misinterpreting your words. "If you seek the source, you'll be heading to the church next? I should stay here, but if you can discover what happened to Thendrick and Mathilda I'd appreciate it. They are cousins and I'll need to tell their parents their fate," she says with a wince.

    Meanwhile, a scraping sound emerges from The Blood On The Vine, and after a moment the door opens cautiously. After determining the all clear two human vistani and a halfling emerge to start repairs on the breached barricades. The vistani ping as evil btw, but they don't appear to be up to anything underhanded at the moment.

    Aliza and Cedric notice The Blood On The Vine used to be The Blood Of The Vine, but an N has been daubed over the F. Ekius merely remembers it as it was.

    "Tell me of this sunsword. I have heard naught of it before now. By its name, I would guess it a powerful relic of our order, or at least one we should wish to possess in our fight against the darkness."

    Ekius gives the vistani no mind. Vistani almost always ping "Evil," but they seldom cause trouble. Though he would have no qualms with putting down evil wherever he finds it, to attack the common man unprovoked simply would not be just.

    She looks to the barricades, then too the inn. "I'm concerned about leaving you here alone. How many villagers are there? Is it unfeasible to relocate them, or take them with us? I don't want to go looking for your allies, only to leave you to the mercy of the undead."

    The young halfling simply stood there cleaning her blade as introductions were made. She shared a look with Sir Cedric but gods know what the non-verbal exchange was about. It seems like both are annoyed with each other for some reason.

    With both her swords cleaned off and sheathed, the halfling stands there until suddenly and awkwardly speaking up, "My apologies Kaylee, but It's Sir Cedric. Of Wyndham. He was knighted and as knights go, they really enjoy their titles. Wouldn't want the hubris to die out in such a dire situation."

We can try our best to investigate the root of this menace, but I cannot guarantee quick results if the undead continue to put up this much of a fight. I will need some time to replenish and reorganize my magic, and the others will need rest as well. Am I right to assume we are welcome to stay and contribute to the watch and defense until we are ready to head out?"

    A moment after Shotas introduction, a look of genuine sadness flashes over Cedrics face. Then he shrugs: "Pompousness, actually. Hubris is thinking yourself equal to the gods. But yes, I do place much more importance on titles and silly protocol than my dashing squire." He bows slightly to the paladin, thus concluding what may be the most awkward introduction in the history of adventuring. "So, it seems like we have two options: we can rush off and try to stab at the heart of this corruption right away, or we can recover and plan before going after it. Assuming whatever is behind this is intelligent, we can assume it will eventually notice the destruction of it's minions and react accordingly, so a quick strike has some merit. On the other hand, it may already have defences prepared, while we did not come prepared to battle a horse of undead, and have used up a significant part of our spells... So, what's everyone's take?"

    "As you say, the Sunsword was a legendary artefact of our order, but nobody's seen in it about 150 years. Thendrick came across a rumour that it had last been seen in these lands, but, well, events. We haven't had a chance to track it down yet. Bildrath who runs the shop there reckons Madam Eva would know where to start looking if anyone does. I think Madam Eva's some sort of sage who lives out in the forest, I'm not really sure. I haven't had much chance to ask about it since the zombies appeared!"

    Kaylee's smile only makes the paladin go redder. "This last attack has been by far the hardest. Usually it's a few zombies at a time and if they can't claw through the barriers they lose interest and go elsewhere. It's only that big creature that got them into the square this time. I think I'll be fine. We just need to find the source of this infestation and put a stop to it.

    Ashlyn is swift to acknowledge Cedric's title. "My apologies Cir Cedric."

    "If you're offering, I'd really appreciate if someone could stand a watch to let me rest. I... didn't really get any sleep last night." Aliza and Cedric notice a tightening of Ashlyn's jaw as she stifles a yawn with iron willpower, but the effect is slightly undone by the note of pleading in her voice as she glances at Kaylee.

    Kaylee nods in assent to the idea of resting. "I've used about half of my magic for the day, but I'm more than happy to take a break and rest for the night. We have no idea how many of these infectious zombies are still out there. There are enough of us to set up a comfortable shift schedule, even with all the spellcasters."

    She pauses, then looks around at the barricades. "Actually... what was the population of the town before the undead plague began? That... that would at least tell us an upper limit to how many there are."

    "I think you're asking the wrong person, but there are about a hundred people sheltering in the tavern," Ashlyn informs the group.

    "Plus about a half dozen vistani," she adds as an afterthought, almost as though she doesn't consider the band of rogues and smugglers to be people.

    Even as she speaks a handful more men emerge, some with lengths of wood that were probably floorboards in their recent incarnation. Presumably all the furniture has already been used. Three of the men begin to rebuild one of the other barricades, piling up the furniture the zombies had rooted down and reinforcing it all with the new floorboard beams. A few others supervise, eyeing the party cautiously.

    "They wanted to fight, light bless them. But they have little in the way of fighting skill and after Jona got torn down only to rise again as one of them I told them to stay out of my way. The last thing we need is to add to the zombies' numbers!"
