OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
This is a very delayed (and odd) post, but what do people think of the way hands are drawn since the latest art upgrade?
When they were first "fleshed-out" I hated the new style - reminded me of Salad Finger's tuberous fingers. Everything else about the upgrade was cool but I wished they had kept their old hands. Ironically I actually quite like Salad Fingers, just didn't seem "right" to me in OOTS.
I've since become accustomed to them, but was wondering if anyone shared my initial revulsion? :D

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
Each new art upgrade has been welcome, and enjoyed, to include the hands.

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
It took me a few strips to get used to them, but once I did, I didn't really mind, particularly once I saw the extra level of details they were able to more easily portray, like gloves and rings, etc.
I am: Neutral Good: -2 chaos, -21 evil and 15 balance!
Can't find the strip you're looking for? Head on over to OOTS Strip Summaries!

It used to look creepy to me because of uncanny valley. It still is, but I don't notice them anymore.

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
I find them more akin to french fries. Or maybe chicken fingers?
Which part of a chicken is the finger again?

The fingers never bothered me, but Xykon's jaw did: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1039.html
I'm used to it now, though.

I actually like the new level of detail, it helps with the physical humor of some reactions. I also disliked how fists used to be done, so...
Xykon's jaw reminds me of Murray from Monkey Island for some reason. For all of your completely and utterly honest needs. Zaydos made, Tiefling approved.

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
To be sincere, I really love the art. But this arc in general, for me, has too little 'constrast'.
Some parts of the fights in the caves, with vampires wearing dark colours against a dark background; and the blueish frost giants against the blue background got my mood a little down. It's probably intended though, and makes parts of the scenes, like the Mechane or the Chaos Giraffes, (<3) really beautiful to see.

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
The only issue I have with the new upgrade is with "bulky" characters like Roy. It used to be that their body was just sticks, so it didn't look weird that they were the same size as everyone else. Now, though, it looks like they have skinny wimpy noodle arms. Other than that incredibly minor quibble, I love it.

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
Took me a bit to get used to it, and I still am not used to Xykon's jaw. That said, my favorite OotS art style is whatever gets me more comics, so if the Giant wants to change it up so he doesn't get bored to tears by it, more power to him.
Cuthalion's art is the prettiest art of all the art. Like my avatar.

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
I still don't like the fingers, for exactly the reason you've described. Fleshy meat rakes. I much prefer the stick-figure style used through 946. I don't mind the thicker arms, but I don't think they'd look good if the arms were thick and the fingers were still sticks.

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
I'm not bothered by the flesh forks, but I do prefer the ambiguity of the true stick figure arms. It allows me to imagine a character's handgear as I see fit.

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
One advantage I just noticed is that the colored fingers allow the Giant to do poses like V in the third panel of 960 with their hands over their mouth. So there's that, I guess?

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
The hands have always been the weakest aspect of the style from the very beginning for me, honestly, especially when the characters are holding things. I found it much harder to get used to the stick fingers in the first place than I did making the jump to the more fleshed out sticks.
I like the fleshier fingers mainly because they go with the noodle arms, which I enjoy for the body language they can convey, but also because they seem to encourage Rich to do more elaborate hands in general. Check out Belkar's fists in the last panel of 1115, for example. Nice, aren't they?

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
The only thing I dislike is Xykon's mouth. The rest, everything, is lovely.
But I have to say that I felt in love also with the first strips style, so....

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
Still loathe them, after all this time. I even stopped drawing my own OOTS-style art because it felt wrong to do an obsolete style, but I didn't want to do it the new way.
(When I recently made OOTSified Tolkien fanart, I "compromised" by drawing the limbs flesh-colored, but without black outlines).
I am particularly not looking forward to seeing Sabine again, because her tail was awful in the Villains calendar. It looked like a third leg.

Re: OOTS hands: stick-figures, or Salad Fingers?
The meat-rake hands bugged the heck out of me for months, but I've finally gotten used to it. Noodle-Roy was a bit weird at first. I've loved the rest of the art upgrade, really nice and visually distinctive.
Xykon's jaw never bothered me.
