Default Niche crazy, no I won’t recommend it, build

Playing with ideas to uparmor Wizards and a RED build on the ultimate optimizer thread starting the insanity flowing.

    Standard Human Monk 1/Wizard X.

Skin and DE 16 = AC 13 for reference.

    ST 9+1
    DE 15+1
    CO 9+1
    IN 15+1
    WI 14+1
    CH 8+1

    AC 15 unarmored

Or my favorite of the possibilities:

    ST 8+1
    DE 15+1
CO 12+1 ( first ASI possible target or not)
    IN 13+1 (Most ASIs target)
    WI 15+1
    CH 8+1

    AC 16 unarmored

Okay, it is crazy, unoptimised, but it made me smile. Yeah, I am a sick RP guy...

I play AL games only nowdays.

Preferences: Role play over optimization; Dwarf over Gnome over Variant Human; War games over FRPG; Zorro over Batman over everyone else.

Having fun with just a little boost to beginning Wizard AC. Nothing serious.

Edit: not asking, just sharing giggles.

What benefit does this have over Fighter 1/Wizard x?

Fighter 1 gets you full armor and weapon profs, so you can have up to 18 (19 with Fighting Style) ac at start, and it gets you the con saving throw prof.

Style? You don't need armor and can still be a caster.

I'd rather start Barbarian 1 instead of Monk because at least both of the barb's armor stats are important to you too. Sure you can't cast spells while raging. Just don't rage or only do it as a last resort like if you run out of spells.

Either way, you're needing a minimum 13 in either Wis (Monk) or Str (Barb). It's not horrible... though I think I'd rather go vhuman, pick a half feat and min-max three 16s. YMMV, of course.

Barb one also gives AC from Con, which is better to have for the HP on a wizard, and the unarmored defense allows a shield, so another +2 or more AC from that as well, since you only need one hand free for casting.

That's something that always made me . Why casters who go sword and board, go with a weapon... 99/100, you're going to do better with a cantrip. Hide behind a shield, of course, but then worry about Warcaster? It's great for Concentration checks and the 1/1000 times you get an OA, but you don't really need a weapon... Just have your free hand out, pointing and waggling fingers to melt faces.

Unless you're a war cleric, a devotee of Thor or a sword (or valor) bard, having a weapon in your hands is actually detrimental. Even Nature clerics get more use out of grabbing Produce Flame over Shillelagh, unless you're fighting skeletons (and then, you'll probably do as much damage with strength anyway).

The whole discussion on Forge Clerics getting martial weapon proficiencies was like, why? Stick with Sacred Flame, safely behind your shield and plate. Cantrips are going to do better (because higher attack bonus from Wisdom) than a weapon, even if you've got a Divine Strike rider... And Xanathar's gave clerics a boost to cantrip choices (outside of added things like feats for more options).

If you're ok with the 1 caster level loss, a wizard grabbing a level of barbarian isn't horrible... a massive HP boost, still get Con proficiency, and if the $#!^ hits the fan, you can bonus action Rage and then either take the Disengage or Dodge action while running away, or just Dash and take the hits (at 1/2 damage). Going Barb1/Abjuration would make a VERY tanky wizard. Going Deep Gnome and grabbing their expanded magic feat at 5th level, for at will 3rd level Nondetection makes you a god tank... hmm... sounds like a fun build to me.
