Default what if sleep was a controlled process for humans?

sleep is more of a kind of deep meditation, referred to as reverie. you simply focus and concentrate to enter a dream-like, tranquil state. your mind rests in this state, but you retain limited consciousness and basic awareness of your surroundings. humans only feel the need to sleep after intense exertion or if there body has been damaged significantly and needs to recover. otherwise it is not necessary as a function. after a period of time, your body "wakes up" being fully recharged.

would this ability to turn sleep on and off at will give people more free time on their hands to accomplish things? would it make things worse?

Honestly sounds like what elves do.

Perhaps it is something elves can teach humans. Humans who practice can eventually achieve elven proficiency but can choose regular sleep.

It just occurred to me that elven infants sleep, but part of regular elven child-rearing is weaning them of it.
