    Barnibus speaks up, "T'is true ma'am. I was there, and nearly got caught up in the whole affair by accident. Saw 'em leave with their prisoner."

    Cal almost blushes under his blue skin, but not quite, at Lady Origena's comment.
    "Right, just making sure the door was secure." he says as his gives a prefunctory push. "Alright, ladies and gents, ready?" once he gets an answer, he moves cautiously towards the tower.

    THE COLLAPSED TOWER

    An enormous heap of cracked stone and splintered wood from the tower lies in a low mound here, tumbled partially down the hill to the southeast. The mound of rubble forms a natural ramp that leads up to the now-exposed second floor
    of the tower above.

    A successful DC 15 Knowledge (engineering) check
    made while investigating the rubble reveals two things.
    First of all, the bulk of the tower seems to have crumbled
    into a sinkhole (although from this vantage point it’s
    impossible to tell how much of the basement survived).
    Second, the rubble is unstable, and could shift if not
    traversed carefully.

    I'm afraid not, other than the fact that your character picks up what sound like some strains of sadness in her voice when she initially spoke of the tower.

    Cal looks a bit skeptical at first at going down to the tower in the condition it is but realizes that someone needs to and there could be a wizard in need of help. Giving a deep breath, he starts to carefully wind his way down, shifting his weapon from hand to hand as handholds appear, as he peers out for signs of life.

    Cal, Jheren, Aerlya and Barnibus pick their way cautiously through the rubble, climbing hand over foot to ascend the ramp-like debris field up to what remains of the second floor of the collapsed tower.

    Open to the sky above, this exposed upper floor contains only some smashed furniture and a sprinkling of rubble. A trap door is set in the floor against the northwest wall, but a stout timber has fallen across it.

    Putting his morningstar in his belt, Cal moves to the timber and looks at the others. "A little help on this, eh? Move it off and over there, ok?" Once everyone is set, he calls out "One, two, three!" and puts his strength behind it.

    Barnibus unstraps the leather cords that cover the head of the massive hammer he has strapped to his side and its wickedly spiked iron head, "If we be goin' down in there, best get yerselves ready...no tellin' what's down there. Here let me help you with that lad."

    The salty old warrior bends over and grabs onto the timber next to Cal and heaves.

    The timber weighs only 100 lbs so a character with average strength can shift it.
    QUICK REMINDER: Barnibus is merely a "puppet", he will do absolutely nothing except follow along unless you want him to do things. I encourage whoever is logged in and posting, to check and see if he's taken an action. If he hasn't and you've got the time you can post an action for him....he's communal property.


    The timber lifts rather easily off of the trap door, and Cal sets it aside with Barnibus' assistance. Looking at each of you with a quick nod he then reaches down and opens the trap door and descends into the area below. Each of you follow in turn.

    The tower’s large ground floor has mostly collapsed under the rubble, but along the western portion of the room a section remains clear of debris. An iron trap door set in the floor is directly below a companion door in the ceiling above. Shattered wooden furniture lies scattered around the corpses of two small, green-scaled creatures. Light filters into the room from the trapdoor above, but looking down through the companion door below appears to be complete darkness.

    "Does anyone have a torch?", Jheren asks after climbing down, "I've got a flint, so I can make fire, but we need something to burn." He also takes the longbow off his back and checks that his arrows are in reach, though he hopes he won't need to use the weapon. At the very least not on anything sentient.

    As Jheren asks, Cal groans quietly as he starts to fish around in his pack. As Aerlya snaps her fingers, he looks up and a smile crosses his face as he replaces his pack. Handy one, ain'tcha?" Walking over to the two bodies, he nudges each in turn. "A mystery, for sure, but we'll unravel with a bit of luck." He does a cursory look over the bodies, mostly to check to see if they are truly dead, before moving through the rubble to the door on the far side of the room.

    With the increased light from Aerlya in the room, Cal is easily able to discern that the two figures are kobolds that apparently died from the blunt force trauma of falling debris from the collapsed tower.

    Cal begins picking his way across the debris and rubble that slopes upward all the way to the ceiling, but stops a few feet in. He can barely make out the outline of the first floor door behind all of the collapsed rubble.

    The door leads out to the hillside, and cannot be opened, thus the party ascended to the exposed part of the 2nd story and climbed down. You can take the ladder back up to the second story, or go down the trap door ladder presumably into the basement.

    Pushing against the door but not budging it, Cal turns back. "Guess its down from here." Moving past the bodies, he goes to the trap door as he looks at Barnibus. "Help me with this one, too, eh?" Once the debris is cleared and they can open the trap door, he peers down. "I can head down first, if you guys can provide some keen eyes if you see anything?" and then he begins his descent down, pulling his morning star out once he sets down and looks around.

    The four companions descend into the lower levels of the old With's Tower. Aerlya's summoned lights fill the room with a rather eerie, shifting illumination.

    The walls of this chamber have buckled precariously in several places, and masonry and dirt are scattered across the floor— the collapse above plainly caused this structural damage. The dry-rotted frames of five simple beds lie against the north and south walls. To the southwest, the room broadens into a larger chamber. A rusted, grinning iron statue stands in an alcove in the north wall between the two wings of the room itself, and in the wall to the south is an old iron door.

    Cal strikes the ravening centipede with his morningstar, cracking its carapace and releasing a foul grey ooze as Jheren moves to the far wall. The ranger's arrow bursts through the centipede's head leaving behind a fist-sized hole and splattering grey ooze across the floor.

    Following Jheren's instructions, Barnibus rushes around the corner, steps over the dead centipede and swings his massive hammer in a long overhead arc at the remaining creature. The grizzled warrior growls in frustration as his hasty blow misses badly.

    Aerlya is gonna have a heck of a time targeting her spell properly, and vermin are immune to mind-affecting spells. I have no desire to make you burn that spell slot, so keep it - the cost was basically losing a round of actions.
