Zadkiel's arrows impact the elemental, tearing off large chunks which sizzle and cool as they fly through the air. Khep's blast of cold goes wide, impacting the cieling leaving a rime of frost for only a moment before it evaporates. The elementals unleash a series of graveling growls, simple insults in Ignan, before leaping from the ceiling. They land with heavy thuds, before moving over to Khep, igneous limbs swinging wildly. The each connected with the Undine, smashing his shoulders between their limbs and threatening to catch his clothes aflame.

Oathbreaker's blade slide into the elemental semi-solid body with ease, causing the creature's form to shudder and then lose its form, slumping into a pile of rapidly cooling slag. Zadkiel, in turn, unleashed another rapid volley into its brother, this time tearing out the majority of its midsection. It, too, collapsed into a semi-solid pile of rock and metal. It takes a moment, but neither elemental reformed into a threatening entity. The room is quiet, except your breathing.

"Who knows why the bastard things think the way they do?" Zadkiel shook his head. "You know we spent more time chasing these things up and down the wastes than fighting bandits or watching the borders? Villages could handle small groups of ruffians on their own, and the cavalry would smash any outlaws who tried to organize. But if these things decided to make the local watering hole their territory, folk would call on us to see 'em off."

I used to be part of our military and I know of a few brother's in arm who could handle these monstrosities." Gratoire smiles to himself thinking of his fellow soldiers and what they would have to say fighting some lava monsters.

"Regardless, the tracks continue this way and they show that our quarry was in quite a hurry. I have seen nothing to indicate what might have been chasing him however. It either has not arrived yet, moves by means that I can not track or in the worst case doesn't leave tracks at all." With that Gratoire continues down the tunnel, eyes filled with anticipation for what may come.

"And these were nothing; pets. Your brothers may have found it much more difficult to fight one of these the size of a mountain."

You move forward once more. Again, the cavern is perfectly angled and curves gently to the east. As is to be expected, the next chamber you encounter is in a roughly diamond shape, with another massive golden door to the south. However, something immediately seems out of place. The trail Graitore was following ends abruptly as the ground, which had been covered in light amount of sand which consisted the main sign of the elf's passage, is covered by a large swatch of scorched stone. The scorch mark is massive, encompassing most of the room, coating the floor and far walls in a fine layer of soot. Curiously (or unsurprisingly), the golden door is spotless.

But Graitore's expert tracking skills would not be so easily dissauded. He noticed, across the room and past the scroched area, there was a small divot in the wall, barely a foot deep. Clearly, there are two footprints in the divot matching the prints he had been tracking. The first, covered in soot, was pointed towards the wall. The second was only the back half of the foot. The front, seemingly, was consumed by the wall as the footprint is flush with it. But before Graitore could take a step further, Zadkiel grabs his shoulder and issues a hushed warning. pointing to the back wall, he explains there is a magical sensor just off the wall, which he believes would trigger if anyone steps into the area and alert the caster to someone intruding in the area.

As you start to discuss how to approach this, the rooms temperature suddenly spikes. Heat radiates from the far end of the room, near the golden door. A pinprick of light slices through the gloom of the chamber and grows steadily. The pinprick swells and as it does so, the light dwindles till it is just a smoldering red of metal hot from a forge. As it grows, it becomes clear that what you are observing is a portal, as distant figures move about, too quick and too small to tell what you see past the aperture. Bits of molten magma oozes out the portal and splatter to the floor. Suddenly, as the hole in reality reaches the size of a melon, a slender arm reaches out. It waves around frantically, seeking purchase, as bits of magma fling from the limb. A second hand appears and seems to grab the edge of the portal and the original retracts slightly to grab the other side. With some effort, the two limbs push against the edge of the portal and its seems stretch. There is a wave of distortion and nausea as the portal is warped by the limbs, as you feel the Prime groaning under the strain.

With great effort, the slender limbs pull the portal open a bit wider and with it, a slender frame pulls itself through with a heavy slop of magma. It falls to the ground with a soft thud and a groan. The portal snaps shut the moment the creature had cleared its opening. The creature before you is small, no taller than a child but clearly an adult. It's skin seems, at first, to be caked in cooling magma but as you study it more it becomes clear the cracked, glowing obsidian is its skin. It's build is slight, as if malnourished, with narrow shoulder's and slender hips. As it stands, with far more grace than its entrance, a quartet of wings unfurl, reminiscent of diaphanous wings of butterfly, tinted in reds and orange hues. As they flutter and find purchase in the air, they throw off flecks of embers and flakes of ash, which drift down lazily to the floor. It's face is smooth, unlike the rest of its skin, as if made of polished obsidian and its eyes are burning coals.

It stretches, skin cracking and scraping against itself. It looks one way then the other before gasping as it sees your group. It sniffs the air, tentatively, before becoming excited, wings fluttering faster. [I smell the Ruby! Where Ruby!? Ruby must uphold deal!]

Gratoire nods his appreciation to Zadkiel for his prudent warning. The more this journey continued the more he had to rely on others magical powers, a humbling counterpart to his brutish tendencies. Suspecting a secret door, he began to make his way around the wall towards the footprints, being mindful to avoid the area of the spell. As the heat rose he prepared for another elemental, freezing and crouching, ready to spring out of the way of the inevitable lava attack. He was not ready for what happened next.

"Oh great." he whispered to himself, raising his free hand to a fighting stance that would protect his source of light.

It seemed that this venture was delving further and further into the realm of magic and Gratoire had to stifle a chortle at his sheer inability to find a decent solution to the changing events. The last time he had to handle such a potential magical threat on his own, he killed himself.

These thoughts traveled quickly through Gratoire's mind, almost as soon as they came he dismissed them, chiding himself for his weakness of character. He was not alone this time, and his allies had much better comprehension about such magical matters. And he probably wouldn't have to end his own life to defeat a magma fairy.

He blinked in surprise when the creature began to speak without any apparent hostilities. He looked to his companions, unable to understand the creatures words.

Well I guess we shouldn't just kill it after it went through so much trouble to get here," he says jokingly without ever taking his eyes off the creature or letting his guard down. [Color=green]"Can you speak common little one?"

Oathbreaker warns as he examines the creature, and then cautiously steps forward to join Graitore.

"I can translate for the creature - it is asking where "the Ruby" is. Apparently it had some sort of deal with this person which is as-yet unfulfilled."

Given that the creature has thus far not displayed any hostilities - though that could change with a stray thought - Oathbreaker sheaths his sickle as he steps forward, keeping his hands out from his sides.

[Ignan - "Greetings Honored One. Ruby is not with us at present. We also seek someone. Perhaps we could exchange aid? /Ignan]"

Gratoire quickly adapted his train of thought from a search and rescue mission to the protection of the Pharoah. If this messenger were to call for it, then the event could appear from those portals from anywhere, and judging by Oathbreaker's assessment of it's abilities, even the messenger was not one to trifle with.

Gratoire nodded along to Oathbreaker's negotiations, finding himself unsettled by his relief to not have to broker peace in the stead of his liege. He reminded himself that he had no gift with words as he attempted to take stock of the situation and come up with the best course of action to handle the situation.

Why had this creature appeared here and now? Could it's magma powers create the destruction they had seen at the camp? Gratoire hated not knowing the answers, and resolved to remain prepared to engage the moment it became necessary. If Oathbreaker couldn't reason with it, then Gratoire was certainly not going to let it retreat through another portal to inform the enemy.

Zadkiel's arrows go wide, skittering off the ground behind the waif creature. Graitore's lunges were deftly dodged, while Oathbreaker's burst of color was ignored completely. The pixie cackled as it faded from view. For a moment, you suspect it must have escaped but then you hear the distinct fluttering of its wings. A moment later, a wave of thick, noxious gas emanates from the center of the room, quickly filling it to capacity and then spilling into the adjacent corridors. Fortunately, the thick fumes were easily disturbed by the fey's fluttering wings, easily revealing it's position to you.

Khep coughed but seemed to hold firm, firing a sickly beam at the creature's direction. However, it went wide.

    Spoiler: Pyroclastic Aura
    Show
Anyone in the red aura (which is all of you), need to make a DC 15 Fort Save or take 3 Constitution Damage, this round. Oathbreaker is already holding his breath; he can continue to do so for a number of rounds equal to his Con score before starting to suffocate. The pixie is Invisible, and thus subject to a 50% miss chance. However, due to the thick fumes of the Pyroclastic Aura, its position is known to you. Remember; if your magic requires Verbal component, then you cannot cast while holding your breath.

With the enemy suddenly gone, Gratoire panics for the briefest of moments. As soon as he identifies where the creature is through the haze though, he realizes that it is too late to avoid the alarmed area. Without another hesitation or the threat of the alarm spell keeping him away, his rage renews and he launches himself towards the creature with renewed vigor.

While he often spoke to unleash all of his magical powers, the truth was that not *all* of his abilities required him to speak the words aloud.
It helped to focus his mana in the correct arrangement, of course, and served to confuse his enemies about which of his powers needed to be spoken in the first place, but that was all.
Still holding his breath, then, as he closed in on where the creature seemed to be in the noxious fumes, flailing about in Graitore's grasp, he intoned the necessary words in his mind.

    Initiate Arcana: Ice Sheath!

Blinking away the stinging in his eyes as he reached the back of the creature, Oathbreaker hacks at the thing's kidneys with an ice-coated sickle.

Graitore lunges at the vague disturbance in the smog and miraculously finds purchase. The fey screams in fury, struggling to against the beast-man's grip and lobbing curses in Ignan revolving around mainly his smell. Oathbreaker's swipe goes wide, not sure exactly where its spindly limbs and lithe body are in Graitore's arms. Zadkiel fired from around the corner, but also failed to find purchase.

The fey suddenly stops struggling in Graitore's grasp, and the strings of curses stops. He feels its small chest inflate beyond what could possibly be considered normal. Graitore suddenly realizes why, as a wave of super hot gas explodes over his face and then rushes past and slams into Oathbreaker as well. The heat burns your skin and threatens to catch you alight, while the powerful exhalation buffets you. Your skin begins to blister, as its toxic quality starts to eat away at you.

Khep refrained from yelping in surprise as his allies were overwhelmed with the creature's breath weapon. He decided, instead, to channel Pharasma's power and wash the party in positive energy. Luckily, no one had struck the fairy yet, otherwise his healing would have undone your progress.

Pryoclastic Breath! Graitore and Oathbreaker must make a DC 15 Reflex save or take 26 Damage, half-fire and half-bludgeoning. Success reduces the damage to half and prevents you from catching fire. Regardless of your Reflex result (and if you are holding your breath), you must make a DC 15 Fortitude save to avoid taking 3 Constitution damage. Graitore takes a -2 penalty to his Reflex save, due to grappling the thing as it used its Breath Weapon. This is to represent the normal penalty to Grappling that is not normally applied to those within the grapple but those outside it. But due to how this interaction works, I feel the penalty is appropriate.

Everyone heals for 11 damage (this is done after the Breath Weapon)

Gratoire fights back his choking cough as the noxious fumes head straight down his throat. This was a persistent little pixie but his determination to destroy the enemies of the Pharoah was greater than his self preservation. Even now when the ability to be resurrected wasn't a given he threw himself into danger just as before. With the pixie in his jaws, his attacks became more violent as he attempted to send the creature apart.

Oathbreaker is consumed with a wave of fire and debris, and his consciousness fades into darkness.
He comes to a moment later on the floor, retching blood and his entire body feeling like it was on fire - which it was.
For a moment he considered attempting to flee and regroup, after he managed to catch his breath and was no longer literally covered in flame.
But in his current condition it seemed unlikely that he would last long enough to escape from the flames as his vision continued to dance and flicker.
He had died many times during his long service - it never seemed to get any easier.

"To die, yet without rest . . ."

Oathbreaker wheezed, focusing the last of his arcane energy into his sickle as he worked through the gestures of a spell.

    "I . . . Initiate Arcana: Blade of Night!"

And then with the last of his strength he slashed upward.
