Oathbreaker cursed under his breath as the dragon appeared at the top of the mountain, sending an avalanche down at them. Whether deliberately or unintentionally, Asuulek was certainly making himself a dangerous pain in the ass. Typical dragon. Feeling his speed cut out just as he needed it most, Oathbreaker paused for just a moment to renew his enchantment on himself in the hopes of catching up and staying ahead of the falling rocks.

    "Initiate Arcana: Burst of Speed!"

Then he ran for his life.

Oathbreaker and Graitore's feet pound beneath them and the gap slowly closed between them and the others. Khep is less fortunate quickly being left far behind. At the last moment, he works a quick spell, creating a small divot in the ground that he jumps into just as the rocks rush past his position. But despite everyone's best efforts, it was for naught. The avalanche caught up with each of you, though you made significant ground and while Graitore and Oathbreaker can't tell, they are only a half dozens steps from Conall's invisibility sphere.

Round 5! The Final Stretch! Oathbreaker and Graitore catch back up, within 15 ft off Conall/Zadkiel. However, none of you manage to get past the interference before the avalanche reaches you. Everyone makes a DC 13 Reflex save or take 18 damage and be buried in rubble. On pass, you are not buried and take only 9 damage.

Besides the possibility of being buried, there is no obstacle this round. At this point, we'll be in regular turns, IE 6 second rounds. At current, Zadkiel/Conall are 50 ft from where Conall believes will be a safe distance with Graitore/Oathbreaker only 15 ft behind them. The avalanche has made the whole area heavy rubble and thus cost double movement to get through.

Tailing the dust cloud, Asuulek barrels down the mountain, powerful wingbeats propelling him at insane speeds. It'll be only moments before he's on you and if he so wish could certainly rain arcane fire from his current position.

Gratoire pusheed aside all feelings of hope and worry, steeling himself for the final sprint. He leapt up one of the newly placed rocks in a single stride and with his next he vaulted into the air, flying thanks to Conall's spell. He soared low over the obstacles. Zadkiel and Graitore rush forward, Graitore passing into the invisibility sphere. Conall urged Zadkiel to the air, as he took flight and soon Zadkiel was left visible. Graitore feels a hand on his shoulder and an urgent whisper that they had reached their destination. After a moment, he continued. Should we wait for the others? The elf's grip was tight, and voice strained. Oathbreaker however was not so lucky, his enhanced speed insufficient to outpace the avalanche and he was quickly buried by the tons of rock.

Asuulek's was no mere speck in the distance his body becoming increasingly and alarmingly larger as it barreled towards you. The desert sun is a mere flickering candle to my flames! Seeing the impending blaze of fire, Gratoire returns Conall's shoulder grab and forcefully interjects his back himself between the elf and flaming death.

"Ready your spell elf," he strained through gritted teeth, "But do not cast it until I say so, we will die if necessary, but not before then." He turned back to his bretheren, his gaze following their progress, his heart leaping for fear of his fellows safety. He could no longer see Oathbreaker and things looked even worse for Khep. Even before the thought came, he knew he couldn't afford to go and rescue any of them. One to carry. One to carry he reminded himself.

Zadkiel flew to join Conall and Graitore, and behind him he could feel the protective ward strain and collapse under the dragon's flame. As the heat rushed in he was sure he would die there—but it was the last remnant of the dragon's breath, just enough to sear him painfully without putting him down for good.

A section of the rocks that had been superheated and nearly melted to slag by Asuulek's pass suddenly parts as an deeply tan arm emerges.
Oathbreaker shrugs his way further out of the collapsed rubble, Conall's magical protection against fire flickering and starting to fade out as rivulets of melted rock and searing hot grains of exploded rock rain down around him.
If not for the dragon destroying much of the rock with his pass, he probably never would have managed to escape from his newest tomb in time.
As it was, it was a near thing as the ancient warrior shimmies out of pit before the rest of the rocks could collapse back onto him, and he soars up into the air.

    "We need to go! NOW!"

Oathbreaker growls as he swoops down to rejoin the group, the last of Conall's magic swirling into non-existance around him as the dragon begins to bank around for another pass.
It probably didn't have its breath weapon ready for use again, but it scarcely needed that when it had a vast array of magic that could do the job of finishing them just as well.

Gratoire kept his feelings of relief subdued as Zadkiel and Oathbreaker each arrived to his and Conall's position. His eyes continued to scan for Khep, hoping for some sign of the oracle. As Asuulek approached, Gratoire knew that it was becoming increasingly dangerous to delay any further. Silently he nodded to Conall to finish the teleportation.

Maybe Khep was buried under enough rubble to avoid Asuulek's detection. Maybe with his prey gone, Asuulek would give up the chase and Khep might still have a chance at life. Either way duty came first, and Khep knew his just as well as Gratoire. Silent and steadfast, Gratoire saluted out into the open fields to wherever Khep may be, knowing that he was making the final sacrifice.

    One to die for him.

The dragon tracked Oathbreaker's desperate flight with a gleeful grin on his toothy maw. He titled his body, aiming to intercept the lone human and with a visible twitch of his lips it seems he finally sensed the invisible trio just as Oathbreaker joined them in its effect. Pathetic trick for a pathetic elf! I smell your fear, it reeks! With a powerful stroke of his wings, the dragon bore down on your position. Oathbreaker moved forward blindly, unsure of the exact location of his comrades but a sudden scramble of fingers found his wrist stopped his search. As the others felt Asuulek's immense heat bearing down on them, staring at his gaping maw that would swallow them whole with no effort, a piercing voice filled with arcane energy broke their trance. Longe Citius! Asuulek reacted immediately, a fierce roar reverberating in your chests for a brief moment before a familiar vertigo took you. Far more jarring than your first foray with teleportation, it felt as if your bodies remained rooted while your spirits were torn from their vessels, only for the bodies to follow a moment later. There is a brief feeling of immense heat and queer, alien feelings invading your every sense. The sensations are intense but thankfully very brief.

The howling wind of the storm was replaced by the quiet buzz of Sothis in the early morning. The streets are not yet crowded with people doing their daily tasks and the streets are relatively quiet. The sun had not yet crested over the Black Dome, which puts you in cool shadow on its west side, just outside its primary entrance. With a word, the illusory magic dissipated and the elf fell to the street, panting, his skin a ruddy red and the edges of his cloak smoldering slightly. You hear a call from the nearby guard but it was swiftly silenced when she recognizes you as fellow Risen Guard. She obviously questioned your odd entry (and strange visitor) but doesn't air her questions.

Gratoire, ceased his salute and changed his silent nod to a very loud "Now elf! as the dangerous Drake got unpleasantly close. For the briefest of instances Gratoire considered which deity his soul would find respite in when suddenly everything changed.

The sudden transition from the excruciating roar of the dragon to the quiet serene ambience of the safety of Sothis made Gratoire nauseous. But it was a feeling the large man was happy to deal with since it meant they were that much closer to completing their mission. As the realization that they were more far from danger began to take hold, Gratoire remembered their fallen bretheren who he had to leave behind.

"We should find the Pharoah." he said solemnly, his heart still reaching out for Khep. "Remember we are still not to tell anyone of our mission. Let us try and meet the Pharoah discreetly." He looks down at his singed clothes, cuts and bruises, then around to the area he had just teleported into, "Or at least more discreet than we have been."

Zadkiel just nodded as he got to his feet, as he realized that in all his time in the Risen he never had to deal with the loss of a comrade. Every slain Risen that he'd served with had been retrieved and resurrected. Numbly, he gave Conall a pat on the shoulder and led him toward the Risen Guard who'd called to them.

As you caught your breath and the patter of your hearts slowly dwindled, it dawned on you how close you were to your ultimate end. And then the realization your brother-in-arms, Khep, will certainly meet his. You take a small solace that he shall meet his patron, Pharasma, if ever so briefly before moving on to his final destination. You enter the Black Dome without a word; your sister-in-arms not flinching as you passed her station. You felt the brief tingle as the magical protections afforded at the gate ripped any illusory magic from you, but Conall had already dismissed his.

You find your way across the spacious plaza to the well guarded gates of the Imperial Estate. You see over a dozen of your brothers and sisters at various check points and each meet you with a quizzical but silent eye. Soon, you find yourself at Khemet's bedchambers but your hopes are quickly dashed as their is only a single guard on duty. Such an event means that Khemet is not within. The tall man begs you halt before you leave. Your brother, Osorkon, held a letter towards you. His Greatness, Khemet III, the Ruby Prince and Pharaoh of all of Osirion bid that I give you this upon your return and that you follow it's instructions to the letter.

    ________________________________

Osorkon had been waiting for literally days. He had yet to leave the Pharaoh's chambers in nearly a week and while the Pharaoh's servants had ensured he had been well fed, he was certainly bored. The Pharaoh had entrusted him with an important mission (which he could not tell Khopeshman of). The prospect was exciting until he heard the actual details. Wait. In his bedchambers. Till the 3 of his brothers that left returned, with two visitors. And now that they are here, he can't help feel unease at the absences of one of his brothers.

Gratoire keeps his sigh silent, wishing to be done with this quest that had already claimed a brother's life. He greets the door guard half heartedly with a tired smile.
"Greetings Osorkon, let me introduce you to one of the oldest members of the Risen Guard-" Gratoire stumbles a moment in introducing Oathbreaker, questioning what can of worms he might be opening by calling him by his given title. Not one to let uncertainty fetter him, he quickly decided to avoid deception within the ranks where it was not survival ordered. "His name is Oathbreaker and the Pharoah has already vouched for him. His skull in combat is also impressive. Oathbreaker, this is Osorkon, a blood mage. "

Please tries aside, Gratoire questions the door guard, "Where has Khemet gone to, brother?"

Standing at 6’, Osorkon is rather tall with broad shoulders and thick arms and legs. He is covered in monk wrappings, almost like bandages that cover his smooth skin. Smooth except for that massive scar on his chest, over which hangs an amulet to Ra: a sun spear. At his waist sits a large, perfectly preserved falcon feather. On the other side of his waste sits a wicked looking dagger. Ridges and Fullers run along its curvy surface. Osorkon sports short black hair and has green eyes on a stern face with a broad forehead.

Osorkon had been spending far too long waiting for his fellow Risen to return. Khemet wanted him specifically to do it though, so he couldn't let the Pharaoh down. When he saw the group approach, he was shocked. Singed clothing, burn marks, cuts and scrapes all over meant wherever they came from had been dangerous, and yet they came straight here without cleaning up. What is going on? he thought. He unfolded his arms, revealing the large scar on his chest where his wrappings didn't cover. He first noticed that the numbers didn't add up, what's worse was Khep was the one missing. Brow furrowed, he had handed the letter and message over to Gratoire.

"Oathbreaker?... Well met." Osorkon had never heard of any Oathbreaker, but Gratoire's word was enough for Osorkon to stay silent on the matter. Whatever it was about, it was the Pharaoh's personal business. "Perhaps the letter will tell you for I am unaware of his whereabouts. Gratoire, where is Khep?" Osorkon looked at the group's well being. "Is he in need of healing?" Osorkon motions for each member of the group to stand still as he methodically starts healing them, starting with his brethren. Osorkon pulls out his dagger and cuts his arm, waving the dagger cyclically as he chants. The blood runs down into his hand and mixes into bright positive energy as he directs it at each one, closing and knitting their tissue together.

Conall's face sunk to a displeased and disgusted grimace. It means that Khemet will be naked and will insist on not bothering to cover up... His tone makes it clear he finds this far more embarrassing than the Pharaoh. Of course, you are no stranger to his nakedness; hard to avoid when you routinely are in his presence for his every waking (and unwaking) moment.

”Greetings Zadkiel, may Ma’at guide your every step”Osorkon said with a nod. When Gratoire mentions Khep’s death, he goes stony. ”Khep was a good man.” Osorkon says somberly. He whispers a brief prayer to Ra in Khep’s name. Whatever is going on with my brothers, it’s serious.

Osorkon listened to the letter intently. Shiman-Sekh? I’ve never been. Why would the Pharaoh be naked there? He thought. When Gratoire finishes the letter Osorkon smiles. ”Perhaps waiting here was supposed to be a blessing in disguise... very well, I’ll grab my things. It shouldn’t take long.”

Resolving to meet with the Pharaoh, post haste, you break off with Osorkon as he heads to his bunk to retrieve any personal effects. As you leave the estate, one of the exterior guards stops you, a brutish brother by the name of Akmon. He mentions the Pharaoh had left something for your group but he had honestly forgotten on your way in. He plops a heavy bag of coins in each of your hands (though Conall's was quite a bit larger than the rest of yours). "Payment"? Is all Akmon has to say on why.

The bags contain 225 PP (2,250 GP) of freshly minted coins. Since your in the largest city for thousands of miles, I suggest taking some of the day to do some shopping. Mild spoiler; Conall will break from the group once you reach Shiman-Sekh so his teleportation magic won't be yours to use from that point forward. Given your are Risen Guard, you have access to aristocratic mage's who will be willing to bend over backwards to garner the Pharaoh's favor so assume anything that costs 5,000 or less is easily obtainable. Simply put whatever you purchase in a spoiler in your next post, please.

Gratoire wondered how to answer the question while retaining the missions secrecy. Looking for an answer he wondered why Khemet hadn't simply left it with Osorkon. He quickly shifted his focus from the problem and over to the solution. Subterfuge was not his skill though so he left the duplicity to his comrades.

"Thanks, Akmon." Was all he said. Once out of earshot, he suggested that they all make their purchases while Osorkon retrieved his gear for their upcoming journey.

His repeated fights with the more arcane and occult enemies showed him he needed more abilities that would handle such foes, so he seeked out weapons made from materials that would be a bane to such foes.

Osorkon rushed back to his room, grabbing his backpack and filling it quickly. As he rushed out, Osorkon went to the market to get a supply of food. Osorkon expected harsh conditions, for Khep would not have fallen easily. Osorkon shuddered, thinking about the fact his brethren couldn’t even recover the body. He sinched up his backpack and headed back to their meeting spot.

Oathbreaker gives a nod of greeting to Osorkon, but otherwise remains silent as the letter is read and their next destination becomes clear.
He looks over the bag of money that he is handed curiously, but he had already gone on one shopping trip since awakening, so he had a few ideas of where to go to spend it.
He returns a few hours later with a much smaller coin purse, a new wand on his belt, and a somewhat rakish-looking red shawl twirled about his shoulders.

    "I am ready to depart."

As you regroup in a few hours, just outside the Black Dome, newly decked out and feeling a bit refreshed after your harrowing morning flight. As you grab arms and Conall prepares his spell, Graitore hears a voice call out to him. Whipping his head around, he spots a familiar red figure sprinting down the plaza waving an arm in the air frantically. Wait! Don't tru- Mid-syllable, Conall's spell finishes and Sothis bleeds away into the Astral ether and soon the cool of a random Shiman-Sekh alleyway materializes around you. Conall mumbles a half-hearted apology to you when a small hand tugs at Oathbreaker's scarf. A small boy, no older than eight, stares up at the ancient man with a look of wonder and slight fear. 'Ere Mistah! Da Pharaoh told me ya be here soon! He shoved the paper into your hands and scamper's off, sound of coins jingling with his ever step.

The paper was a hastily scrawled note in Khemet's handwriting, directing you to an address. Upon hearing the address, Conall lets out a withering sigh and explains the address is, indeed, a bath house and one that's quite expensive and caters to the upper crust. It takes only a half an hour moving through the wide streets of the pleasure city, clear signage helped your job immensely. You are greeted by staff who, initially, seem rather stiff and unwelcoming but a whispered word from another staff and they quickly usher you further into the facility. The place is extravagant, carved from beautiful white marble. The humidity is surprising, clearly magic is at work to keep the moisture contained within the bathing areas. You are guided through long corridors, drapes separating many individual rooms.

Near the end of the hallway, you are led into a small room that seems to serve as a changing room. Inside there is already another occupant, a man bundled up in heavy, elaborate fabrics that leave only a thin strip of his eyes visible. His eyes are a vibrant, unnatural red and the surrounding skin as pale as the marble surrounding you. Besides tracking you as you enter, he makes no motion to greet or even acknowledge your existence.

You wait a moment, unsure if you should start undressing, before the nearby curtain is pulled open. Pushing past the curtain is a familiar sight; an Efreeti. Though unlike the one you encountered in the volcano (or the illusory decoy), he is dressed in relatively simple garb made of practical materials designed to be functional. Her face is etched in a grimace which wanes as she spots you. She pauses, quirking her head quizzically before being gently pushed out of the doorframe. Behind her, a Djinn in similar, functional garb pushes past her, his own scowl remaining painted. He looks at you, sighs and points towards the open door. The 'Great' Ruby Prince will see you know. He grumbles. Get out of the doorway, Hot-Head! The Efreeti finally scrambles out of the doorway, though their large size makes the room very cramped. Conall gulps, already sweating bullets, before pointing his nose to the ceiling and marching forward.

The room is heavy with steam, filling your lungs with lavender and lilies. The room is large, at least 20 by 40 square with only a few feet of ornately tiled floor spanning the wall before the steaming pool begins. On the far side of the room, through the steamy haze you can barely make out Khemet's outline. Well done, my Risen Guard. Please, come forward and give me your report. I know you've had an eventful day, you may relax in the bath waters if you so wish.

Gratoire quickly falls into a bow at the appearance of the Pharoah. "Pharoah Khemet, allow me to make a full report regarding our mission. Three weeks ago we departed for the volcano in search of Conall the researcher who had lost contact with the rest of the world. Upon our arrival we found the researching camp destroyed and in flames. We were abouyt to find a cave into the volcano where we discovered Conall within a self created pocket dimension.

Once we discovered Conall, we learned that his research had attracted the red dragon Asuulek. In his search for Conall's research, the wyrm had destroyed the researchers camp along with most of Conall's notes and had chased Conall into the pocket dimension we found him in.

From there we were about to escape down the volcano while being chased by Asuulek. Unfortunately Khep was caught under a landslide and was too far away to save or retrieve a body part for resurrection. Upon attaining the foot of the volcano Conall teleported us back to Sothis."
Gratoire finishes his initial report, deeply feeling the loss of his fellow Risen Guard as he had to once again explain Khep's death.

"This ends the report of events pertaining to the mission, however there were two other events that transpired that, while not directly pertaining to the mission, are worth noting.

The first is that we were attached by a band of gnoll slavers. Before they were all killed we learned of a slave ring specializing in djinn. They have expanded their hunt for races with djinn blood.

Secondly and more importantly, while we were within the cave, before discovering Conall, a pixie covered in magma teleported into our presence. The pixie was an emmessary of a Genie of Fire, I am unable to correctly recall his name. She was seeking out the Pharoah to learn of an unknown deal. Diplomatic relations failed, but the magical area prevented the emmessary from teleporting back to her master and she was killed without being able to deliver any message."

Zadkiel likewise bowed, as instinctive to him by now as returning a salute.

"The name of the faerie's master's was 'Al'Sura'Garrash'A'Tuin', if memory serves. I fear my Ignan is only just getting up to speed. Besides that, I think Graitore's report covers it, other than... I suppose Khep's body might be recoverable if he was buried deeply enough, if Asuulek lost interest in the site with Conall gone, and if the dragon didn't incinerate his remains out of spite. Don't know how likely that is," he added somberly.
