    @Daun: Huh, indeed...

Glenndale is usually a safe place. The druid community makes sure that any wild beasts are relatively tame when visitors come over, which is a daily affair. Are there druids that may not like visitors? Absolutely- some have clung to the old ways and resent the encroachment of society and urbanization- but those are, at best, solitary individuals.

Even they would know better than to openly attack people. That would incite retaliation from the authorities as a whole. Never mind the Ehlonnian Church, which condemns this kind of behavior.

The man finishes his drink and puts some coins on the table as he gets up and tips his hat to you.

"He's fine now, miss. That attack took place hours ago. He's all patched up now. If you give me your name, I can have him look you up at Glenndale. Or that friend of yours. Have a good night.""

And whether you give him the information or not, the man walks out of The Golden Mare with his friends.

@Gregory: This is becoming a one sided fight.

You need to go on the offensive if you have any chance to bring this beast down. Each strike from it is one less chance at survival for you and so, trusting in the faith of Cuthbert and hold on to your holy symbol as the emblem of the Cudgel appears at your feet, glowing faintly in a green aura as you look up at the menace and draw your shield, expecting the worst...

    Round 5

The beast shrieks in hellish anger and brings all its might upon you. Enough strength to break you and the bridge both stand on...

And as you close your eyes, expecting the end, you open one eye and look around you:

Cuthbert has answered your prayers this time! The Sanctuary spell lives up to its name as the beast's claws bounce off your holy aura as it watches in dumbfound confusion and roars in your direction.

@Kalir: That attire... is that The Crow?!

You have heard tales of The Crow. Back during the days of The Scourge, when Hunters roamed Halmathan and took to a grisly line of work. Amongst them, The Crow is said to have been the apex predator. Even those tasked with dealing with The Scourge are said to have fallen to it and it was The Crow who dealt with them.

Some would say she was a Hunter of Hunters.

The strength and skill of a Hunter is not known- their numbers and tactics were purposefully left secret, since the Powers that Be did not intend for them to become a militarized force and were disbanded just as quickly as they were formed.

But none of that matters now. This woman has murdered good folk in cold blood. She is going to answer for her crimes either to the King or to Thresher, as you call out her vile deeds and The Crow looks at the dead on the street, but says nothing.

You and her already said what had to be said. As for what she's wearing? A crow's mask, obviously. A wide brimmed hat and a black feathered cloak that covers her entire body, simulating the corvid she is named after. No flashy items of power to adorn her, which means she is severely unprepared for a fight against you.

And taking advantage of that, you leap back several feet into the air and activate your trusted ring, which no man can ever see through, while honing your senses to discern the unseen as The Crow stays put on the street.

Maybe she's afraid of engaging you?

    Round 2

Unseen and locking eyes with your foe on the ground, you watch The Crow take a single step forward before her entire body turns into a swarm of crows that caw and fly around you, blocking line of sight, but you should still be able to sense her and...

No. Where is she? These crows are a nuisance and aren't really pecking at you. They can't negate your training in The Sublime Way. Nobody can and...

It's a sudden sharp pain on your back as a lightning fast blade cuts down your back with tremendous speed and finesse as copious amounts of blood drop on the street and The Crow lands about ten feet away from you, concealing her gloved hand into her cape, her back turned to you.

You did not even sense her approaching! How is that possible...?

She nods. "Ask for Daun Tersetti, or Eari Blackroot."

She heads away deep in thought. When she gets to the table she says to Camus, "I'm going to head back to Glenndale. Something is up and I hope it's nothing, but I'll should let my friends know anyway. By the way, where did Kalir go?"

After he answers, Daun leaves the Mare and wildshapes once again onto the form of a raven in a shower of dark violet flower petals. With a couple flaps she takes to the skies. She heads back to Glenndale in no particular hurry, keeping her eyes and ears open for anything out of the ordinary.

    Kalir

She had surprised him like he had surprised her. He didn't sense her when she approached. Some magic trick? He had plenty of hard training to rely on. Invisible, he drops down to the road then uses the combination of his wings and powerful legs to jump over the Crow. As he was coming down for the second landing he slams Thresher into her. When Daun come back to the table, Camus just shrug at her question.
"He said he was going to be back soon, but has been a while and...", he was saying when she decide to go to her place, "Do you want company? I can escort you back to Glendale before teleporting back home. The king did asked not to roam alone tonight", he offer her, pocketing the bottle for later, "Also we should leave a note or message for Kalir, should he come back and find none of us here. After all, he was tasked in keeping you safe tonight".

He call a waiter and ask him to let the raptoran guard know that he was going to escort her to Glendale, since he was taking too long. Outside the Golden Mare, if she accept his offer, he take to the skies alongside her in wild shape.

If she rejects, he just look to Thing and shrugs, entering the Mare once again and letting the waiter to nevermind the message, as he once again sit and ask for some dinner so he can keep on drinking.

@Kalir: That wound in your back is bleeding non stop.

This bastard managed to surprise you...ok. Two can play at that game, as you bring Thresher down with incredible force and The Crow simply ducks a second before impact as it watches you smash the pavement.

"For a Raptoran, you behave very much like a beast, little boy. Foaming at the jowls and charging in. Blood up your nostrils, clogging your mind. You expect anyone to sit down and speak to you amidst wild swings? Has the Royal Guard fallen so low? In hindsight, this ought to come as no surprise, really...

A thankless and horrific job it is indeed, little boy. Curse those who placed you in this path. You shall awaken from this Nightmare very soon, though. Your suffering ends tonight."

    Round 3

Being close to The Crow, the swarm of her corvids caw and fly towards her cape, becoming a part of it as she takes out a beautiful sharp blade, with a curved handle. The blade isn't nearly as big as Thresher. A quick weapon, meant to dispatch foes in a rush, so as to move on to the next one.

With a snap, The Crow turns the handle of the blade and it separates into a pair of kukris, which glow with a purple aura as she slices not once, but twice, cutting you good in an X shape upon your chest, despite your displacement effect, which she clearly has no problem circumventing, given that she attacked you before and you were invisible.

@Ilven: Where is this guy getting such speed?!

He acts like a man possessed. You need to get as far away from him as possible. The music box has proven to be of help... somewhat. But can you trust on such small trinket to save your skin?

    No. No you can't.

This little toy has served its purpose, as you drop it on the ground and run back down the stairs, attempting to get into cover as you fire a single arrow at the mad man, striking him in the chest.

Unlike your previous shots, acid isn't really corroding him this time, though. The arrow hit its mark, but this guy seems hardy as hell- it may take your entire quiver to knock him out cold.

    Round 8

And then, with the box left behind and a new wound on his chest, the man puts away his Blunderbuss and sniffs the air as he grabs the handle of his axe with both hands and begins turning something.

"What's that smell? ... The sweet blood, oh, it sings to me. It's enough to make a man sick.... hehehehhehehehheee...HAHHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAHAAAAAAA!!! !!"

What used to be a hand axe, has now been turned into a halberd, as the madman expertly turns the handle and this one extends, gaining not only size- even as a halberd, it would be too unwieldy for a man your size and his- but also considerable reach.

The good news? He's not shooting at you.

The bad news? He doesn't need to anymore. That halberd of his has reach beyond that of a regular one. The fact he's effortlessly holding it with both hands as he descends the stairs attests to it.

@Gregory: This ought to buy you some time...over a minute to learn how to deal with this beast.

No matter how strong and brutal it is, Cuthbert's power is always stronger. Knowledge is key, and although a more reasonable mind might choose to elope, you draw out very expensive lens made of sapphire and put them on, chanting the words of power and take a look at this thing that is clearly intent on ending your life. Something this big had to be seen by someone in a City like Halmathan. It just leapt onto the Great Bridge and began its relentless assault. No... there has to be a reason behind its presence here.

Maybe that bomber mage? Who knows what Runestone works on in that Tower of theirs. Wizards are known for holding grudges, after all. And theirs are not to be taken lightly.

And as the beast roars and shrieks in your face, you look up at him and a small crack appears on the lens. It's not useless or broken. You may try using it again at some other time, but the following information is revealed to you:

This beast has no magic cast upon it. No wizard was involved in its creation. No wizard you know would be able to get around this spell. No... there is something else afoot. Something sinister and very dangerous. Where did this beast come from and why? That is something even a Divination as powerful as yours cannot discern.

What you do know is that it's a threat. A very real and dangerous one. Even if you are warded for the time being, who knows if this thing will focus its attention elsewhere. The amount of destruction it could bring upon the City would be disastrous.

    Round 6

    It's that gigantic swipe again...

This beast fails to realize that St. Cuthbert of the Cudgel has your back now. Whereas before, you may have been sent flying, this time its his own damn claw that bounces off your body, sheltered by the Heavens as it recoils in confusion and leaps at least fifty feet back, clawing at the bridge and going into a wild beastly frenzy again.

Kalir isn't coming back and Camus the Archmage is sure enjoying the King's tab. However, you've had enough drinking tonight. Time to go check Glenndale park. if what that man said is true, there's a hag on the loose...

A hag? Even that sounds ludicrous to you. Glenndale's druids are fierce and staunch protectors of the land and those that reside in it. If such a creature is indeed prowling the park, it won't take long before it's brutally killed by the many druids residing their and the Ehlonnian priesthood, which share some of your Natural Blessings.

And although it's dark and past midnight, you may still find someone to talk to in the woods. some druids, used to wild shaping all day long, eventually take on their animal persona. And since many choose nocturnal predators, it isn't uncommon to find them awake after sun down.

Leaving the Golden Mare, you look at the deserted streets, with that roiling fog and not a single carriage in sight, or pedestrians for that matter.

And although you reassure Camus that you;re a big girl and can take care of yourself, a flying partner would be most welcome... yes. Flying solo tonight doesn't seem like a good idea as the power latent in you from years of training in Glenndale's untarnished lands answers your call and immediately your size reduces significantly amid a silent shower of violet petals, turning auburn hair into pitch black feathers, concealing jewelry and turning your hands into adept wings and feet into tiny yet deadly claws as you fly off towards the fog filled sky and beyond it towards your bucolic home.

Still, even when flying above the deserted fog filled streets, you can tell something's not right. Is it connected to tonight's earlier events? Not necessarily. Forest Hags are the kind of things Lord Ashford would chalk up to "fairy tales". Something his precious science cannot explain and thus, does not exist according to him.

@Camus: Like any self respecting wizard of your caliber... you pocket the expensive bottle and take it out of the Mare, amidst the glare of the sommelier.

It's not customary to do that. especially when you've been given unlimited credit, but what are they going to tell you? These people value their lives, after all.

And besides, you're an Archmage. You can get away with everything!

What isn't that easy is navigating beside Daun as you fly, losing altitude one second, only to swim back up the next as you hit a few cold weathervanes and swear this is the last time you're flying drunk... probably.

The moon shines exceptionally bright tonight above the City. Pity those below cannot see it on account of the fog, but the stars are up there:

    The constellation Boötes.

    The star cluster Hyades.

The constellation of Orion and its famous belt.

    The star cluster Pleiades.

Sirius, the Dog Star, seen far brighter than the others.

And Ursa Major, a constellation associated with guidance and nurture.

Being so far up and above the sea of fog, you can only see the top of the high rises and steeples that dot the City. Glenndale should not be too far away and you ask Daun, even in raven form, if she had any ideas of what to name a weasel. being a druid, she must've seen those a plenty back in the park. And although you may still be a tad bitter with Griswold, he did make some sort of a point in naming your familiar who is an extension of you.

@Daun & Camus: The dark tall trees of Glenndale can already be sene as you begin your descent when that horrific howl can be heard again, much louder than before. Not coming from the park, but elsewhere in the City.

For Daun, who knows animals, this does not belong to any she';d know. suspicions had been running rampant before, but now it's clear:

Something is out there in the night. And judging by the sound... it doesn't seem friendly.

Gregory calmly observes the beast, now secure in the knowledge that it could not break through the barrier for its duration. Another minute, certainly. Maybe a little longer.

He frowns as he realizes the creature is not created by magic. With a shake of his head, he begins casting another spell, this one to call creatures to his aid. He attempts to summon several lantern archons. Whether there is only one or several, he instructs one to teleport to the Cathedral and to request reinforcements at the St. Abaidas Bridge, by the order of Inquisitor Gregory du Vay, and to give a description of the monster he is currently facing. Any remaining ones, if any, he instructs to distract the beast, not to come within its reach, but hover just out of reach and take shots at it.

He then sets out to cure his wounds and prepare to take down the beast.

    Spoiler: Mechanics

Gregory casts summon monster V, to summon 1d3 lantern archons from the 4th-level list. Once that is done, he gives the instructions, then intends to spend the remaining rounds within his sanctuary as follows: convert restoration to cure critical wounds, convert holy sword to cure critical wounds, and casting detect thoughts to try and glean anything from the beast's mind. Then he casts extended holy sword. After that, he will break the sanctuary by attacking it with a destruction spell. Of course if the creature runs off, he doesn't go through with the rest.

    Summons: (1d3)[2]

Not sure these will be relevant, but might as well include them:

    Cure critical wounds: 1st: (4d8+13)[32]; 2nd: (4d8+13)[31]
Destruction damage (if the creature succeeds on its Fort save against DC 26): (10d6)[41]

    HP (prior to healing): 66/196

As the sommelier glance at him for taking the bottle for the travel, Camus just look back and leave. He asked for a bottle, not for just a glass. He paid for it, after all and... Well, the King did and not a small amount.

Also, he could use some wine after this night and all the glight is over.

Flying over the mist ridden city with a raven and the stars as company. The cold air did calm his soul and after some thought he decides he'll take Griswold as drinking buddy tonight or tomorrow. His train of thought is disrupted by the howling. Weird.

The question is odd, but Daun ponders good names for weasels. "Hmmm... Good name for a weasel. I guess it depends on what he's like. Sometimes people like to name their companions after real things. Maybe Briar, Quill. For some reason I like the name Champagne: it might make sense if he's that color. Others like to remember people or places by naming their new friends after them. You're an archmage: perhaps some element of arcanum has a enjoyable ring to it?"

On their flight, a bad feeling wells up in Daun as she hears the unnatural howl. "No, they're not. *Squack* And they're not friendly either."

Home was so close, but it would have to wait. Protecting Hamalthan meant from the monsters in the night just as much as the people during the day. She turned sharply in the air and headed towards the noise. As she flies she begins to change, as various buffs take affect.

    Spoiler: Casting
    Show
Daun will cast spells in the following order:

    Freedom of Movement
    Death Ward
    Babau Slime

Then, once she's within about 5 rounds of whatever is making the noise (or as close as she can tell), she'll cast:
    Poison Thorns
    Superior Magic Fang
    Bite of the Werebear

I don't know how far away she is, or how far behind the fight we are. In the event she could actually get into the fight sooner than the 6 rounds she needs to cast the buffs, she'll cast them in this order:

    Poison Thorns
    Bite of the Werebear
    Superior Magic Fang
    Freedom of Movement
    Death Ward
    Babau Slime

So for instance if she could reach the fight in just four rounds, I'd like to have cast only
    Poison Thorns
    Bite of the Werebear
    Superior Magic Fang
    Freedom of Movement

I'll mark spells cast off on my sheet once I know which ones were cast.

She alights on the archmage's arm, ready to teleport when he is.

@Gregory: At least he won't be able to hurt you... for now.

Within the confines of safe Sanctuary, you ask St. Cuthbert to send in his mightiest Champions. Beings of unrivaled power in the Multiverse that would even give the gods pause as the you close your eyes and await their pious answer amidst the shrieks of that beast.

    Round 7

The creature brings down both his arms onto the ground, causing the entire bridge to shake as you nearly lose concentration of your spell. If this continues, The Great Bridge will come tumbling down with you on it.

Thankfully, The Champions have arrived, as two motes of golden light take shape:

Lantern Archons. Not the kind you'll find in Arcadia, these celestials are native to The Seven Heavens, home to the almighty Hebdomad. Small, but very fast, they should be able to bring down that creature or at least buy you some time as one of your prayers for the day washes into your soul like a cleansing light.

@Daun: Even at top speed tonight, who knows if you can pinpoint that howl's exact location.

Halmathan is huge and even as a raven, it won't be a speedy flight through the sprawling gothic metropolis. However...

There's Camus Shatris, the Runestone Archmage. All the elf has to do is wish it so and you can be at your desired spot. Such is the power a wizard wields. You wield such power too and although there may not be a reason to warrant specific spells... why not?

Cawing at the night, you cause vines to grow around your black feathers that immediately wilt and are absorbed into your form as the sigil of a fish in white light appears on your left wing before fading away.

Perching yourself on Camus' shoulder, you look around at the immense City, shrouded in fog.

    Time to go get some!

    @Camus: Champagne?

Why name a weasel Champagne. You can't drink a weasel. I mean, you can if you use the right incantations, but who would do that? For now, Thing shall remain just that.

As for that howl... you got this. No matter how fast Daun may fly as a raven, a wizard is always faster. If there's trouble afoot, an Abjurer of your caliber must be aptly protected and so, while still flying, you draw the arcane sigils around you, making sure the druid is likewise protected.

    Now, for the real trick...

The howl could've come from anywhere, but you're a wizard, Harry! You don't need a freaking compass, as a smile of triumph draws upon your face and you tug at your belt, causing the air around you to shake and rumble as reality is unmade for you, bending to your arcane will, that no one would ever dare question...

    ....

    ....

    ....

Wait. Why does do you taste salt? It is mid spell that you are reminded of one of your earlier courses at Runestone, on the matter of casting spells:

... and remember class- for as mighty as our minds are, they are too beholden to the same frailties as those shared by the common mind. Never attempt to cast a spell while under the influence of an intoxicant. The results could prove disastrous not only to the caster, but those around him. Commit this to heart and... Mister Quivaris, are you drunk in my classroom????

@Daun & Camus: It's a mighty splash, followed by another and then another as both of you look around:

Oh... it's the ocean. Drenched and with Camus waddling about in his finest robes, Thing scampers up on the elf's head and slaps him on the forehead, clearly not amused at being thrown out at sea.

Well, at least it's a nice night. Full moon... but where's Halmathan?

@Camus: Yes... something sinister is afoot, alright.

Still waddling in the ocean, you spit some salt water as the waves hit your face. Thankfully, Griswold and the council will not become aware of this little mishap.

Archmages don't make mistakes, after all and Daun is a druid- she will never be able to master Cosmic Power the way you and only you can. She'll believe it.

Tucking a wet sloppy and highly irritated Thing back into your mage robes, you stretch out your arm for an equally wet raven Daun to nearly peck your eye out and focus on the closest place that would be familiar to both as the ocean water around you begins to churn like a whirlpool and unmake itself...

And then both, utterly drenched and smelling of the ocean, appear at the gates of Glenndale Park. Needless to say, it's freezing. You just too a dip at sea and back to a fog filled City? It's cold.

    @Daun: Wizards...

Not one to waste time, yet another mighty spell envelops your raven self, granting you insurmountable strength as you dig your claws just a little deeper into Camus' shoulder and the wizard does his wizarding, taking you back to Glenndale Park.

Back at the beginning and drenched... but where to go from here?

The Crow held her ground. Maybe there was a chance to get answers. He was in a right foot forward stance with the heavy flail held out in front of him. He slid his foot foot to be slightly back, in a slightly defensive posture, while he lowered Thresher to one hand behind his right leg. His voice stayed firm.

"Ive seen you punch clear through a man's chest with that hand, don't pretend to be defenseless. That slaughter and the rest of the dead bodies around you was provocation. I did not know it was you."

The Crow's other words did stick in his head. I got here too late for that.

Kalir raised his center and squared his angle slightly, but plenty for someone skilled like her to know it was a less aggressive posture without being being off balance in case of a sudden attack. He flipped the adamantine head of Thresher over his shoulder so that the head and handle were balanced as he released it.

@Kalir: The bleeding isn't stopping as you hold on to Thresher and look at The Crow, who has once again seemingly lowered her defense.

You feign some defenselessness yourself, with your trusty flail held firmly in one hand as you observe a large pool of blood dripping down from The Crow herself. In the heat of battle, you must've hit her pretty hard, yet she doesn't seem to shake a bit as you pressure the questions and she looks at the bodies littered around.

"You find me 'punching' through a man's chest unusual? You are winged, have you noticed that? Besides, that is what we do: we Hunt. Our skills vary, but the end result is the same. It has to be.

As for your approach to battle? Reckless. You charged in like a fool, raptoran. Isn't the symbol of your Mother Goddess an owl? That being said, Wisdom flew out the window in this City a long time ago, so you aren't solely at fault.""

The Crow looks at you for a few seconds and then turns her back to you.

"You ask too many questions, little boy. You may not like the answers to them. I have enjoyed our little spar. Leave while my spirits are high. I smell no bloodlust in you. For now.

This is not a task suited for such gallant guards. It's a messy, dishonorable business. Wicked in nature, but it has to be done. Now fly away. Kill your petty beasts.

Leave the Hunting of Hunters to me."

The Crow limps just a little bit as she walks away from you and uncorks a small urn as she pours it over the coachman's corpse... oil.

@Ilven: That's a nice weapon of sheer destruction.

You heard a long time ago that a faction within the City, in anticipation of The Scourge and the misery it visited upon Halmathan, forged special weapons for those willing to go out and deal with the beasts and madmen roaming the City. The name of this faction isn't known. The manufacture of these weapons is not continued to this day and if it is, no shop in the City will have them on display, nor would one know where to inquire.

They were referred to as "trick weapons". A skilled wielder could use these trick weapons and use them in their regular form and their "transformed state". Once transformed, the trick weapon becomes a lot more dangerous than its regular version. the power of each Trick Weapon varies, but they were all designed to deal with the problem at hand quickly and messily, depending on who was wielding it.

As for this Halberd? As long as an ogre's swing, by a quick count. And just as big. Normally unwieldy and too heavy for a regular man, this psychopath shows no strain as you dart down the stairs and feel your heart about to jump off your chest. Even with the boots on, you have been running and rolling and leaping and shooting. You aren't walking out of retirement- you're nosediving through a blade filled tunnel and landing on a pool of alcohol. A painful return...

    But hopefully not the last.

    Round 9

The mad man sniffs the air and aims his halberd at you and then runs down the stairs at top speed, just as before and stops shy of ten feet away from you, cold breath escaping his mouth, which bear pronounced canine teeth as he grips that blood covered halberd firmly with both hands.

The effect of the boots will not last forever. You could always back flip away, but this bastard is extremely fast and now he's got reach to boot. Surrendering to him will leave you like those chopped bodies when you first entered Oedon's Tomb. He doesn't seem like the kind to take prisoners.
