    Default A Quick Question

So I joined the comic not long after the 500 stanza epic poem of bold Sir Thumb and thus do not have much an idea of how intense the Miko threads were. I do, however, know what Hilgya is like. My question for veteran forum-goers, is "Just how bad were Miko threads compared to Hilgya threads?"

To keep this from devolving into either thread-type, no specific examples are necessary. I would just like your opinions on the relative frustration/keep-the-popcorn-ready nature of Miko vs. Hilgya.

This is purely to satisfy my own curiosity since I have heard some posters assign the old Miko threads nearly legendary status.

They were between ten and a hundred times worse.

Hilgya is a minor supporting character. Miko was a central antagonist for about 264 strips. Miko had whole arcs focused on her as the antagonist. And for the most part of it she was, as a Paladin in good standing, inquestionably supposed to be Lawful Good.

Hilgya is little league compared to Miko.

Hilgya threads revolve around one single forum poster--with occasional others coming up with weird-ass asterisks like "the crossbow wasn't actually aimed at her," but they recede quickly. Miko threads seized the entire forum, with lots of people, most of whom are no longer on the forum, howling for her head, and a few people even now popping up to argue that she should have been the hero of the comic.

Or you can see it live in the thread about 1147...
Each one of us, alone, is but a drop in the sea
Our powers pale compared with the great heroes
Our battles don’t hit theheadlines or shake the earth
But they are few, can’t be everywhere, and we, many
So, when the world or universe needs saving, they come
But when people needs saving, we are the ones to appear
We're underdogs, but we rise up to the challenge to be heroes.

The Giant has this to say about the recent resurrection of Miko arguments.
I give you all the gift of freedom from ~800 posts arguing about a character that's been dead for 12 years, largely because I don't want to read any of what's been written. Go forth and enjoy the world. Maybe watch a movie or something.

It was so bad with Miko that Rich had an idea for Miko in a one horse open slay for magnet or Christmas ornament.

He posted that he did not release it to the public. He thought it would reignite the debates. He waited until a year after her death to allow us to buy it.

His words were something like....I did not want to give anyone the idea that I might bring her back.

They were pretty obtrusively bad. The Hilgya threads are fairly short, with a point and a counterpoint. No one changes their minds, but they are still fairly controlled. The Miko Threads broke the forum and to spill across multiple threads. Everyone had their view and no one really listened to one another. I still have scars.

    Many, many, many times worse.

Miko was the single most divisive character, or element in any fashion, of this comic, by far.

Hilgya is a small time scuffle. By comparison, Miko was World War II and Hilgya was the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama. . .both were technically warfare, but one was an epic conflict for the ages, the other is a minor scuffle that goes down as a footnote in history.

The Miko wars basically chased a LOT of people away from this site, I know I stayed away from the forums for YEARS after Miko, because of how divisive she was and how toxic these forums could get during her reign of terror. I saw it even spill over into other forums, where other websites discussing RPGs or other geek-related topics would have Miko threads pop up.

Well over a decade after Miko is gone, she's still the total embodiment of "Paladin played wrong" to a lot of gamers. . .and to others she's seen more favorably.

You may want to qualify your invocation of flu.

Edit: Foolish me, I've illustrated your point.

Edit 2: I further concede that the Black Death was culturally devastating in ways the flu has never been, so really I should have just thought for a while longer before posting.

Well, I would have been happy with 'recurring supporting character', personally. Or at least if almost everything about the later strip didn't make the context of her introduction look increasingly baffling.

Nah, he just doesn't read them at all. He believes (probably correctly) that the cost of the forum is compensated by increased visibility, comic-promotion and sales. But he doesn't visit much, except when wielding the modhammer.

So, after all, when reading Roy's speech "You're not one of the OOTS and you will never be" and asking to myself where she asked to become one of them, the correct reply was indeed: "Nowhere."

Because that is a message sent to the fanbase.

Miko being, at least from Roy's point of view, a member of the party, was brought up here:

    http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0221.html

so, in that respect, there was a lot of speculation that once Miko handed over the Order, and they were acquitted or at least sentenced to something minimal thanks to mitigating factors, she might become a member more permanently.

But it was later made clear that she would not be a member, and it could be said that Roy's statement was as much to the audience as it was to Miko.

Ah, I see. In some way this puts a bit of sense in that speech, in universe, with Roy talking more to himself -and what he projected were Miko desires- than to Miko.

(And yes, of course, the fanbase explanations stands.)
