Hmm, just realized Trident is a one-handed piercing weapon. Contemplating whether or not to invest in feats for that for the sake of flavor or not. It would work with all Swashbuckler class features unless I am mistaken. Of course it has no mechanical advantage. Oh, also wondering if Pearlsteel (from Stormwrack) is accessible in this setting and are there any nautical non-metals that would work for weapons (maybe some form of coral or that form of nonmelting ice from 3.5)?

hannahbbug3: At this point I'm going to ask if you're uh, sure you want to do that dive? I spent some time figuring out how high the Crow's Nest is on Gall Seeker (a trickier task than I expected actually, references to a lot of real world ships don't actually care to mention the height of the masts, apparently only the length of the ship was interesting), and finally concluded that it is about 100 ft. high. (More than I had originally thought, but I guess it makes sense that tall ships are you know, 'tall'.)

So according to the rules suggested for diving, the damage you take from a failed dive (Acrobatics) at that height would be 6d6 +2d3 nonlethal.

A safer option would be to slide down using a rope and then dive.

It is possible that those materials are in use, yes, though probably not in 'common circulation'. Meaning that they would be rare in general, or at least that only some races/peoples know how to make them. But it would not be impossible to get something like that, just not from your everyday trader.

Huh? No, I believe it's only been 5 at most since my last post. (Or is that a reference I don't get?)

Sorry for the delay though, I was occupied during the weekend. Planning on posting now!

I keep jumping the date forward in my head for some reason. For the last several days I've thought it was the 19th.

Huh, was curious, so I did math and found out in average, the crit rate and multiplier for a falcata give an even damage distribution when compared to a rapier/scimitar, meaning that it is very slightly better given the higher base damage die. Only at level 20, when their respective multipliers increase by 1 for Swashbucklers/Fighters, does the rapier/scimitar gain the lead. Not much of an increase, but I found it interesting.

    Spoiler: Math
    Show
So a falcata has 19-20/*3 as a base crit and rapier/scimitar has 18-20/*2. So a 10% and 15% percentage respectively. Taking into account Improved Crit (which is mathematically irrelevant to the comparison, but easier to work with), they become 20% and 30%. So, I used a base of 100 attacks.

    Falcata is 100*3(Multiplier)*0.2(crit rate)=60
    Rapier/Scimitar is 100*2*0.3=60

Using average for the rolls (4.5 for falcata and 3.5 for rapier/Scimitar), however, the falcata hits 270 while the rapier is 210, though that is less significant than it sounds since at level 8, my character would be applying flat 16+ per attack (excluding precision damage) that would also be multiplied in that equation (1230 vs 1170, less than 5% difference, and it goes down from there, impact does not affect this significantly either).

At level 20, however, the crit factors become 80 for the falcata and 90 for the rapier. With the difference being far more in the rapier/scimitar's favor. The boost by this level from flat damage (assuming all points in Dex, a +5 weapon, +6 Dex boost, Greater Weapon Specialization, and Piranha Strike (also Weapon Training)) would be 32, which is considerable (about 8% difference, taking into account the base damage dice. Impact + Enlarge Person affect this gap by about 0.1%). However, the chances of making it to level 20 are low, and it is only at that level that it takes the lead.

In case anyone finds it amusing, excelsior and I just had like a 20 minute IRL conversation about who would win in a duel, Piscine vs. Vigo, and we decided it would probably be on the luck of who goes first. We may need to test this theory if we have downtime. or not. We might just try it out IRL tomorrow, haha!

Though we agreed it's totally in Vigo's character to bring up a sparring match. Who wants a shot at him?

All at once or one at a time, all the same to me!

Seriously though, Vigo wouldn't be opposed to a little sparring. Once he's had a chance to clean the mess off, of course.

It wasn't so much the killing that shocked him--he's killed before--but the suddenness. The rules he's used to are very different to the ones here, and he's in an adjustment period. He won't admit to that IC, but that's where the character is in my head right now.

Lol, Tybalt is a rat both literally and figuratively. Not sure snitching would be handled well on a vessel filled with criminals (what he told Frin qualifies as snitching). And yes, I realize it is his job, which actually kind of makes it worse. Let's just say I've had my share of experiences in such situations (though I was the one who usually had to fight the urge to snitch, part of my OCD (I am diagnosed with the disorder, so not just saying that)). I can assure you, when surrounded by criminals, it is not good for one's survival (which is why I had to curb my own patterns simply so I was not privy to as much, so I would not be compelled to snitch).

I do expect it may get him in trouble at some point.

Edit: and yes, Bansheexero, I do realize just how bad of an idea it is- thing is, Tybalt wouldn’t.

While he might be claiming to Vigo that’s he’s old hat at all this and knows exactly how to survive... in my head at least he’s only lasted this long thanks to sheer luck (and maybe diehard played a role too). One of these days, there may be a friendly fire incident, and the only one sad will be Frin, because he has to find someone else stupid enough to tattle.

Not surprised, he's essentially a Retarius, which were nasty back in the days of Rome, though I'm not sure if the fighting style was used outside of the Coliseum.

Also, not sure if Tybalt is saying Eralia is flashy or not. I mean, during the fight, she was as straightforward as possible, literally just attacking the closest thing to her. Pretty bread and butter tactics.

Though foppish, Brom leans towards women. As indicated earlier his dream of course is to run off with a princess, but a girl doesn't necessarily have to be pretty if she's interesting. He's definitely tried to flirt with the Captain at some point. That her reaction left him with all his parts is impressive.

Not that it matters too much to Vigo, he's pretty far down the initiative list :P

Indeed, it is generally agreed among the crew that the Captain must have been on a good mood and she found Bromden amusing, as all he suffered was a slight concussion from the headbutt. (The iron mask makes them especially nasty.)

And it is time for proper combat! I generally use block initiative in PbPs, it makes things to move a little smoother. I might slightly move characters around to make neater block, please let me know if you ever feel you've been wronged.

Eralia, Bromden, Asvard and Piscine are up now!

Air2 is now in V10 and the Captain in M10, otherwise the map is the same.

    Spoiler: Initiative count
    Show
    Air2
    Captain
    Eralia, Bromden, Asvard, Piscine
    Air3
    Frin, Hesti
    Air1
    Tybalt, Vigo
    Waltya
    Elemental4
    Abrayus, Sorry, Ignace, Pirate crew

I have not included Rafril, as from the silence I assume that Goaty won't be joining us in this adventure after all.

EDIT: Those that are below deck, if you simply want to head to the upper deck as quickly as possible, you can state that and I'll have your character take the closest route up. If you'd like to emerge from a particular exit however, please let me know. It might take you some rounds longer, depending on the distance, but positioning can sometimes be relevant.

Alrrrighty! Tybalt and Vigo are up!

    Also, question for Thunder:
The closest elemental is 85 ft. away from Asvard. If he can blast from that distance, he hits.

If he cannot, then he can move to AG13 with a double move, or as far as the edge of the hole to the hold with a run action.

Could I have a confirmation on what he does?
