Default Re: IC The Pirate Dream: Sliced Heart

Piscine and Eralia head to the crew's quarters under the forecastle. It's a big room by ship standards and crammed full of bunk bends and hammocks, often the latter hanging above the former. There's not much official order here, people could claim any bed they liked and if the person had a fearsome reputation enough, then they could probably trust the others wouldn't crash in it even when the owner wasn't around. Some of the less popular spots were shared, as it was rare that the whole crew would be resting at the same time. A couple other pirates had the same idea of getting a little shut-eye, but mostly the space was peaceful. Piscine receives no response to his musings, except for a small distant stir that feels like a begrudging thank you.

Bromden has managed to get the attention of Tirana, a human woman a few years older than him. She was a pit fighter once, and that life left her with many scars and cost her an eyebrow, but other than that she's not too terrible to look at. After a quick exchange of glances and a few suggestive gestures they've gone below decks and eventually found a secluded corner; not too easy a task on a ship where cargo was just being loaded and everyone were wandering around carrying this and that and poking their heads everywhere. However, before anything too licentious has taken place, they hear an alarming shout from the main deck.

One of the three pirates fiddling with the chest had managed to push the other two momentarily aside and pick the lock open. "Haha! Pay up, Quartermaster!", he declares triumphantly and throws the lid open. He's just leaned closer to take look inside, when a wispy arm shoots out and punches him hard in the guts. Utterly surprised, the pirate doubles over, gasping for air as the blow pushed his lungs empty. Three blurry shapes fly out of the box in rapid succession and condense into roughly humanoid forms, floating ten feet above the ship's deck.

    Spoiler: Visual aid
    Show

A large translucent watery arm reaches out from the box as well, it's slower than the wisps, but also briskly climbing out.

The two other pirates clamber away from the chest and shout an alarm, though most on the main deck couldn't have missed noticing the scene. Vigo has an especially good view, as he was nearby supervising the moving of cargo, and from his position on the forecastle, Asvard has a clear line of sight to the flying creatures. Tybalt is on the lower deck, hauling a barrel of wine to the hold when he hears the sudden shouting from above. Piscine and Eralia hear something as well, though faintly as they're farther in.

The Captain had been gazing at the sea from the back of the ship, but when these attackers suddenly appear she quickly jumps down to the main quarterdeck and moves over to the ship's alarm bell, giving the rope where it hangs a few good yanks. The loud toll can be heard all over the ship, a sound everyone know to associate with immediate danger. "What are you waiting for?!! TO ARMS!!", she bellows.

Waltya runs closer to the elementals drawing a pistol and shoots at the closest one. The bullet hits and the creature looks mildly displeased.

The water elemental climbs fully out of the box and looms over the closest pirates, its large shape taking up quite a lot of space. Frin stabs it with his short sword as it moves and the creature grunts angrily, then retaliates by slamming its huge fist into the quartermaster.

"Come take the wheel!", the First Mate commands one of the crewmen, who rushes over. Abrayus runs down the stairs, grabbing his battleaxe. The crew follows his example and draw their available weapons as well, but throw nervous glances at the air elementals floating out of reach. They also look reluctant to approach the big water creature. Fighting merchants and even other pirates was fine, but did this thing even bleed?!

Next to Asvard, Ignace the fearsome ship mage is still concentrated on throwing his breakfast to the sea, hanging partly over the railing.

One of the air elementals sweeps down towards Vigo, but before it gets to hit him, he is also ready to strike.

After the attack, it returns to its previous height.

The Captain doesn't look pleased by the meek response from her crew. "Don't just stand there like chickens waiting for the butcher! AT THEM!!" She runs over to the edge of the quarterdeck and not bothering with the stairs, jumps straight over the railing. It's not the most graceful jump though, and the pirate that unfortunately positioned himself below is knocked prone when the Captain practically lands on him. He whines in pain, but Ironskin pays it no mind as she steps over him to swing her heavy flail at the water elemental. Before the blow connects, the creature also punches back, leaving a splash of water on Ironskin's coat.

Vigo slashes at the elemental that dives at him, but unfortunately its wispy composition makes it hard to hit and his blade meets only empty air. Eralia and Piscine run into the thick of battle!

    Spoiler: Piscine

Unfortunately, due to the clutter on the deck (grey squares) the farthest Piscine can get with a Run action is W11. He could also rush to jump over the opening to the hold to end up in S12 or S11, though that would require a DC 15 Acrobatics or Athletics check. Let me know if you'd like to try the jump. This can be made as part of this rounds Run action.

The cold air conjured by Asvard hits the elemental and it withers in pain before letting out a wailing gasp and vanishes.

Bromden pushes past Tybalt and some other pirates to get on the deck to punish whoever interrupted his amorous encounter.

Tybalt takes one look at these enemies and realizes that his usual plan probably wouldn't work. How can you bash a tornado over the head? Did a living river even understand a threat? That wouldn't do at all.

Vigo watches the elementals as they circle above, jabbing at one as it descends and trying unsuccessfully to avoid its blow. I would imagine I lose the buckler's +1 AC since I need at least one hand to climb and I'm not dropping/sheathing my weapon. I'm assuming that me getting close takes both my actions, so no attack this round unless I can AoO I guess.

The ship does indeed host quite a sizeable rat population. When Tybalt starts playing rodents start climbing up from the hold using ropes as pathways and a few skitter out from the lower deck behind him. They're nimble but vicious ship rats, grown fat on leftovers and stolen food. The rodents converge into to two swarms full of fur, tails and teeth, and the nearest pirates step back in disgust.

    Spoiler: Axe
    Show
The open hold offers the rats a good path onto the deck, so they appear immediately and can act on your next turn.

Since Warded Against Nature is a drawback, I'll say that it won't prevent animals to approach if they intend to attack.
Fortunately, Tybalt succeeded in the check!

Also, sorry that I wasn't clear, due to how the stairs are positioned, to get to AE9 from AD10 would mean climbing up to the deck from the wrong side of the stairs. Therefore I've had Tybalt take a step up the stairs instead.

Vigo hurries to climb up the rigging to get to the elementals.

Gunmaster Waltya takes a step away from the swarming rats and with a quick motion she reloads her pistol and points it at the closest vortex. A puff of smoke erupts from the gun as she shoots the elemental in the head. The shot would have killed a human, but the elemental merely recoils from the impact.

The water elemental pummels the captain with its large fists, but not hard enough to knock the tough pirate off her feet. Abrayus runs over to the chest and tries to slam it shut, but the open lid won't move an inch. "Sorcery!", the First Mate exclaims, then instinctively jumps back to just avoid a watery fist from smacking him in the face.

On the forecastle Ignace finally pulls himself together enough to stand up and look at the enemy that has appeared on ship. "Ugh... and I suppose we're expected to do something about it", he sighs and starts staggering towards the battle, almost falling down the stairs.

The pirate crew has also found their courage and the buccaneers draw their weapons and follow Eralia's example in preparing to strike if the air elementals come in reach. A couple step forward to swing their blades at the water elemental, and a few crewmen in the rigging take potshots at the enemies. However, none of them manage to do any significant damage. Tirana climbs up to the deck behind Bromden and wades through the rats, elbowing Tybalt as she passes. "See you're calling your friends, 't least they're prettier than you."

Blue light shines from the accursed chest and three more creatures fly out. These have a tad more detailed humanoid shape than the first set of elementals, and they each have a pair of leathery wings and sharp horns. One of them looks like its made of ice, the second of air and the third of salt. Giggling like madmen, the creatures circle around to harass the pirates surrounding the big elemental, clawing at them with sharp claws.

    Spoiler: Visual aid

One of the air elemental makes a dive to punch Hesti, but it misses and the bosun counters with a kick to the creature's side when it returns back up.

Ironskin glares at the water elemental and swings her flail at it again, dealing two blows in quick succession. The creature wavers looking hurt, but manages to keep its form together.

As I tried to explain before, due to the clutter on the deck, Piscine ended his movement in W11 last round. However, he can get into attack range with a move action. Fortunately, the water elemental had already made its AoO this round, so he doesn't get smacked.

Piscine moves through the cramped deck, closing the distance to the large elemental. While it's distracted by the other pirates the undine stabs it from behind running his trident right through it! The elemental grunts and splashes, but for the moment it is held in place.

Unfortunately the creature is nimble and hard to tell apart from empty air and Bromden's weapons fail to hit anything solid. However, his landing back to the deck is superbly stylish.

Tybalt shoots Tirana a glare, but is prevented from replying further by the fact that he's occupied with piping.
He directs one group to dash towards the whirling vortex of water, the other to nip at the heels of the ice demon. And don't bite people. Not even the blue one, he adds, and the dozens of shrieking rodents do no more than skitter harmlessly around Eralia.

    Spoiler: OoC

So, swarms are weird. Swarms are really weird. Here is a link to the swarm subtype.

I'm assuming that Tybalt can order the swarm to not harm pirates it passes through.

Swarms are not slowed by creatures. Can they also swarm over cargo without impediment? I'm going to guess the answer to that question is "no". If the answer is yes, swarm 1 will be able to reach the large water elemental.

    Swarm 1
double move action to V10-Y10, becoming log-shaped rather than square.

    swarm 2
1.) make a double move action south of the cargo hold to S13, sharing a space with M1. This requires the swarm to become... log-shaped, which it can do. This provokes an AoO from M1. Swarms take half damage from piercing and slashing weapons.

2.) I think they can attack it, with no roll necessary due to the nature of swarms. This deals (1d6)[2] damage. It must make a fort save, DC 12, or be nauseated for one round. Also, spellcasting or concentrating on spells within the area of a swarm requires a caster level check (DC 20 + spell level). Using skills that involve patience and concentration requires a DC 20 Will save.

Vigo grabs a rope and swings to the other elemental. His attacks unfortunately miss. Tybalt's rats skitter across the deck towards the battle, climbing nimbly over the clutter. The ice imp jumps up when it finds itself suddenly surrounded by tiny creatures, though its manic smile doesn't fade.

    Spoiler: Tybalt
    Show
Since the rat swarm has a climb speed, I'll say they can move across the loot (grey squares) without hindrance. However, their speed is just 15 ft. (30 ft. with a double move) so the first swarm doesn't quite reach the water elemental yet.

Asvard does try to counter the attack against him, unfortunately the air creature proves too nimble.

The Gun Master quickly reloads her pistol and runs after the elemental that flew to the back of the ship. Some crewmen near her follow her lead.

The impaled water elemental swings its arms wildly, throwing one punch at the Captain and another at Piscine.

"Don't let the enemy daunt you, lads and lasses! Fight on!", Abrayus clears his throat and starts singing an inspiring battle song (in his opinion anyway), "We are pirates! Pirates of the ocean..." A couple of crewmen roll their eyes. But whatever one thinks of the first mate's singing, it does carry some power.

    Spoiler: Raging Song (Inspired Rage)
    Show
Everyone that hear Abrayus, which is basically everyone onboard, can accept the music effect. If they do, they gain a +2 morale bonus to Strength and Constitution and a +2 morale bonus on Will saving throws, but also take a –1 penalty to AC. Also: While under the effects of inspired rage, allies other than the skald cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except Acrobatics, Fly, Intimidate, and Ride) or any ability that requires patience or concentration.(Unlike the barbarian’s rage ability, those affected are not fatigued after the song ends.)

Singing merrily, he turns to swing his large axe at the water elemental, cleaving off a small piece of its shoulder.

On the other side of the deck, Ignace stops to stare at the elemental gliding over him. "Well decide already where you need me...", he complains, but searches his pockets for something small and shiny, brings it up to his eye-level and mutters arcane words. The small thing crumbles to dust and Ignace's eyes start to burn like hot coals. He takes a step closer to the elemental, staring at it intently. A flame bursts right next to the creature, but it manages to pull itself away from the fire in time.

A couple of more pirates clamber onto the deck, taking in what's going on. Tirana runs past Bromden, heading towards the fight ahead. "Nice trick, darling", she quips over her shoulder, "Good to know you can land on your feet." Those crewmen with an enemy in reach strike at them, though their opponents are quick and pirate tactics are ill suited against them. One man manages to smack the air imp-like being in the back of the head, and another stabs the ice devil, but the enemies just laugh back at them. Another pirate takes a punch in the face from the water elemental as she moves past it.

Then the ice creature puffs its cheeks and blows a burst of cold air at the pirates, as well as the rat swarm.

Its friend claws at the pirate in front of it, who happens to be the same unlucky chap who opened the chest, was punched by the water elemental and was then crushed under the captain. Despite adding a few claw marks to his wounds, he's still up and alive.

The third creature jumps on top of a nearby box, then spins around and flaps its wings to create a wind that throws loose items at Abrayus and a couple of other crewmembers, as well as the water elemental.

The air elemental next to Vigo dives down to attack Hesti. However, its attack misses and when its on the way back up the bosun counters with a precise punch. Ironskin swings her heavy flail twice, dealing two more blows to the water elemental, which is finally too much for the creature to hold together and it collapses, becoming just a pool of salt water on the deck. The Captain grins at Piscine, who is now holding an empty trident. "Good work, brat", she says, before raising her voice to shout, "Cut them down! Are you pirates of the Gall Seeker or noble damsels in distress?!!"

Light brown squares mark the main deck.
Brown squares are the forecastle and quarterdeck.
Dark brown mark the masts, and also the prow at the front that holds the bowsprit, but is otherwise a little lower than the forecastle, and the higher part at the back of the quarterdeck.
Black squares have cannons in them, so you can't run or charge through them, but can otherwise move normally.
Grey squares contain loot that was waiting to be moved to the hold, no running or charging and these squares cost double to pass through.
    Yellow squares indicate stairs.
Light orange squares mark both the doors and a large hole into the cargo hold.
    Blue is the sea.

People are represented by the first one or two letters of their name. Vigo is currently hanging from a rope, 10 ft. above the deck.
    P1-P14 are regular pirates.
sw1 and sw2 are rat swarms summoned by Tybalt, they take up the whole indicated spaces.

Ai2-Ai3 are the elementals. * means that they are above the deck, all are about 10 ft. up.
M1-M3 are imp-like creatures made of ice, salt and air, respectively.

Piscine is smiling in victory as he manages to pin the creature in place, only to get smacked upside the head by one of its massive arms. Oh, okay, ow. That pretty quickly takes away his mirth, and it doesn't return with the captain's backhanded compliment. Growling under his breath, he maneuvers around his crewmates, taking one of his nets from his belt and slinging it upwards at one of the elusive air elementals.

Piscine moves to Q9, then is going to throw one of his regular (non-masterwork) nets at the air elemental. Using the inexpensive one because I'm paranoid that if I miss the net's going overboard. Figure I have to be that close to be in range, since it's 10 ft. in the air.

Ranged Touch - (1d20+4)[7] edit: whacks Piscine on the back of the head with a ruler this is why we can't have nice things!
If successful, the elemental is entangled. To escape, it must make a DC 20 Escape Artist or DC 25 Strength check.
Spoiler: Entangled Condition for Easy Referencing
    Show
The character is ensnared. Being entangled impedes movement, but does not entirely prevent it unless the bonds are anchored to an immobile object or tethered by an opposing force. An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity. An entangled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) or lose the spell.

    S C R E A M I N G is always a free action.

If you don't have a group that supports you - if you instead have a group that judges you - find a different group, trust me. It's not worth your life to waste it on a bunch of hyenas who serve no value to you aside from keeping you down. Everyone deserves to have a say at the table regardless of how they do it.
