I mean of course those brands of detectors are usually depressed. From what they see, nothing they work with matters!

Yeah, I made the same mistake and was baffled by the technology they apparently have.. Then again, I'm not sure what a dark matter detector is
    ...
Okay, a few minutes of Wikipedia later, they are a thing. And like neutrino detectors they are probably depressed because they feel useless and extremely bored. Only more so.

It's possible, even probable, that Lemon spends relatively little time embodied and most of her time in a digital substrate interacting with other AIs that run primarily in a digital substrate. She may not even own the chassis she's currently occupying and might have simply temporarily uploaded into a stock model in the store in her capacity as Roko's counselor. Hypothetically, she might not even possess a physical address.

A dark matter detector could be depressed by the fact that it might go months without detecting anything, and when it does detect something it's the minute flash of a single dark matter particle happening to directly impact a single atom of the detection medium (materials as liquid xenon).

True, but, it would be a heck of a coincidence that Lemon just happened to find a body that color, on top of being the same model as her avatar in the infosphere, available in the store.

If she exists within the server for the majority of time, I can see her being discombobulated during the three to ten minutes she spends in a physical body.

I can also see her choosing to have her virtual avatar mimic the body she occasionally inhabits.

Instead of scientists going a mile underground to check equipment, monitor, repair, upgrade, etc, the AI does it all with remote waldos and stuff.

She formed contextually relevant statements, multiple strips in a row. That makes her better than Melon right off the bat.

Fair enough. I wouldn't call the AI that does allthat work a "detector" though. To me, that's a fairly specific, and relatively mindless, task.

But I guess if one were to give a person in that position a job title, "dark matter detector" could fit.

Well, note that Lemon specifically says "The local Bodyhub has twelve Philomena Classics and two Model Gs in stock." So this chassis store, which is presumably in the Northampton/Amherst region because Fae and Bubbles are able to swiftly get there, has fourteen versions of a chassis that we have so far seen used by a single character in stock. This in a not especially populous area (the Springfield Metro, of which Northampton is a part, has a population of around 650,000). Given that, I don't think it's all that surprising that a body model for Lemon would be available.

Now, overall this is wildly unrealistic - Northampton shouldn't have a local Bodyhub at all and Roko should be waking up in Springfield at least if not in Worcester or Hartford - and it implies that the number of embodied AIs in the QC universe, despite having possessed this technology for less than five years, is stupidly huge. But honestly, if any of us were expecting anything from the worldbuilding at this point, that's on us.

Hm... We really have become quite snarky.. Or the story has become worse.
But on the upside (???) it seems we're getting our 'wrong body' plot after all...

Also, I'll give it to Melon, the punch line made me smile at least. Not snicker, but it's something.

I'm finding myself warming to Melon. When she's portrayed not just as LOLrandom, she comes across as someone who just hasn't been socialised very much and is doing her best to fit in.
She's sweet with kind intentions which is a distinct contrast to the rest of the snarky, slightly jaded cast. She reminds me a lot of Hannelore, only without the mental health issues.

I agree with you there, but I also agree with Faye last comic. She's a computer. She can save that stuff in a textfile or somewhere not write it on her foot.

The story has shifted focus, and the new focus is something that there is insufficient worldbuilding to support.

QC began as a story set in a world much like our own about a bunch of people shuffling along on the fringe of the labor market going about their lives - which is a remarkably conventional comedy setup and wouldn't be out of place alongside any number of traditional network sitcoms. Only in this universe there were anthropomorphic self-aware computers to serve as comedic characters, which is not dissimilar to something like American Dad, which just happens to have an alien in the main cast. You could pitch the initial run of QC as 'New Girl, but everyone's smart-phone can talk.' Then, somewhere along the line, Jeph got highly invested in exploring the AI characters, and the story shifted. However, it was written using the same setting as before, with no proper pull-back to figure out how to construct this new world in a properly functional way. The new pitch would be for something very different, something I don't even have any good parallels for.

Interestingly, because this split happened roughly around comic #2000 (when Momo gets a new chassis) and we're close to comic 4000 in total, QC can be divided into two halves. Personally, I'll go on record as saying that while there have been some good storylines in the second half, the first half is vastly superior and most of the second half storylines that have excelled have been those not having to do with the AIs.

Perhaps the reason she is this way is that she is trying her hardest to be as human as possible and its causing all sorts of errors because she is fighting against every computer solution her ai mind comes up with in an attempt to think act and react like a fleshie.

There is a type of neural network that forgets stuff (the intention of its development was to model how some tasks could happen in a brain so naturally memory limits and not just in the limited size thing where you either remember or not but having similiar issues as humans was desiderable.) But don't think there is much reason why that would actually be used when constructing an AI, or if it was why they couldn't attach normal memory and just keep notes.

She may also have a "birth" defect. Ais are still relatively new and not very well understood how they happen, if after untold thousands of years of evolution we humans still have birth defects, why not an AI?

I think there's also some mental impulse (designed in or emergent) that makes IAs in the QC universe try very hard to mentally exist as corporeal beings first and computers a distance Xth.

I want to be mad, but I think this is the first time we've actually seen why Roko would be friends with Melon instead of, like, her caretaker and overseer or something.

So my guess is that, outside of 'very special episode' moments, he really likes wacky sitcom moments. I suspect if he were a tv writer, he'd be the guy who always had a plot lined up for Fonzie/Urkel/Jack (Will&Grace)/Barney (HIMYM), and had to be reminded to work in material for the other characters.
