I am getting a definite feeling that this is meant to be part of why it wants to befriend Roko especifically. Roko has a very solid set of ethics, and the willingness to burn herself for them if need be, which is probably kind of fascinating to an immense AI who despite all its power can't really get a grasp on the whole malarky. And since Roko already knew of it anyway, it makes her a prime subject to try this whole "friendship" thing.

Gauges, septum piercings, Hanner's multi-earring thing, Dora's tattoos... this is all clearly stuff that Jeph personally does find aesthetically pleasing (and his own occasional selfies and self-portraiture validate that he's part of that aesthetic lifestyle). Given that the comic is focusing on these... collegiate/post-collegiate 'not quite ready to conform to traditional views of 9-to-5 adulthood'-types (god I need a better shorthand for that)... it kind of fits.

It's a type of underwear, worn by dancers so you can't see their genitalia through their ridiculously thin clothes.

In effect, a jock strap designed for clothing that leave nothing to the imagination. It makes all male junk produce the same 'bulge,' regardless of actual, um, endowment, and is thus seen as a way of making acceptable that there's a crotch bulge present.

In other words, yet another bit of silliness our society does because no one ever stops being tittering middle-schoolers at heart.

Except that's actually Emily. Raven has more piercings and multicolored hair.

Come to think of it, why aren't we seeing more of Raven since that seems to be the kind of character Jeph likes to draw these days?

Eh, really ? I mean, I hate being prudish but I'm not sure if I want to see every ballet dancer's genitals. Or if every ballet dancer wants to show off theirs. I guess this very much comes down to personal preference and in some respects I absolutely agree many people are more prudish than appropriate / me but...

We could also not make what they dance in so revealing to begin with, negating need to worry that each bulge looks the same. I think a lot of even more prudish people would have preferred that solution. But for some reason we landed where we did.

Actually, this skin-tight suits ballet dancers wear are a matter of practicality just like for gymnasts and such - they need maximum flexibility and agility. Also, the dance belts are not only for covering he bulge. They also push the junk up and hold it in place, so there would be no accidental squishing of family gems during the dance.

So as it is, we ended up where we are for reasons. Good or bad, but still reasons!

Anyway, is it just me or does Dale look like an anime mech pilot Punisher?

Dancers used to wear short trousers over their tights. They stopped doing that because of practicality, the first one possibly being Nijinsky, and there was some scandal when it first happened.

True. Although I will point out that both female ballet dancers and MC Hammer found other ways around this issue. As to the pushing up and holding in place, that's actually part of what I was thinking about. The dance belt is not unlike a bra -- holds in place, performs a function. Also highlights the body part in question while pseudo-hiding it/them. Also likewise, there's really not a neutral situation--we have arrived at one socially accepted solution, and there needs to be one, but the one we have is arbitrary. And also the exact expression we did end up with probably has something to do with prudishness/everyone's secretly still a middle-schooler/whatever your own way of putting it is.

Ah, onto what we really need to be talking about! I would say more just anime Punisher, without the mech pilot part. Cyber glasses--wouldn't the be superseded by your mecha helmet?

Basically, social norms are an incoherent, since noone ever designed them - they just occur naturally (leaving social engeneering aside, which more often then not failed spectacularly). It might not be exactly on topic, but: tradition!

The mech pilot came to my mind due to the skin-tight suit which in anime is often used for pilots and such in SF movies or series. And what could they pilot in an SF anime? *wink* *wink*
