A white hole, perhaps? It's the opposite of a black hole (a region that can't be entered and that constantly spews out matter and energy) and is allowed under general relativity, but is purely theoretical in real-world physics.

Well, a hypercube is a 4D cube, so a hypocube would be a 2D cube, that is to say, a square. Perhaps he could be doing research involving novel uses of right triangles to calculate quadrilateral areas, in which case when he publishes his paper it would be really big hypote-news.

Technically speaking they are different. A star doesnt create matter, its just a very efficient conversion engine for turning matter into energy.

The white hole in question spews our matter, not creates it. As far as light being matter goes, better physicists than I (well, that field is a bit too big. I'll narrow that down to "people who actually know physics") can argue that it is under certain interpretations.

Or, for a better argument, hyposun?

You crowdsource discussions based on only the slightest clue, pattern, or scrap of memory resident in your post. You can ask reasonable questions about a person, place, or object, seemingly from very little knowledge. The resulting answers are the result of a rigorously logical process that you induce your targets to undertake, digging up and correlating every possible piece of canon or trivia bearing on the topic (possibly even extracting echoes of knowledge from the Plane of Wookieepedia).

The nature of the knowledge you gain concerning the subject of your analysis might include the answer to a riddle, the way out of a maze, stray bits of information about a person, legends about a place or an object, or even a conclusion concerning a dilemma that your conscious mind is unable to arrive at.

A Charisma check may be required to persuade your targets to produce the desired information. If you dislike the answer, you can manifest hypocognition as an immediate action after receiving it to force your targets to make another attempt, but each successive attempt suffers a cumulative -2 penalty for doing so.

That's a problem you can't solve with more questions though. Just with the ideas in this thread we could have ourselves an entire fanfic contest. There must be at least half a dozen ideas here that would work as an actual main plot, and three dozen more that work as a cool throw away detail (with varying degrees of seriousness vs tongue in cheek). If you don't find a girl you'd marry within two dozen serious relationships, either lower your standards or just don't get married. If you can't pick a cool throwaway detail from 68 (!) threads all as idea filled as this one, you're not going to find one that matches your current standards. My advice: write the friggin story and just let the stupid detail sit until everything else is done, then pick a cool one. My bet is you'll be going with black hole research, because your story needs a black hole researcher.

That's why we're goofing off in here, we know continuing this thread seriously is not going to help you, let alone 67 other threads like this, so we might as well use all of these ideas ourselves to have fun.

So now if you'd excuse me, I need to go think of more hypospace puns.

I have one last thing to say. Here me out.

Ok my scientist is studying sub-Hyperspace, the dimension in which quintessence can be turned into Phantom Energy and then travel to destroy star systems in real time. This is how Starkiller Base fires it’s weapon after draining a sun. (I’m sure Disney will explore it more in due time). However, in the mean time; I wonder what other things my scientist can study about it. Applications I’ve considered would be a sub-hyperdrive which would allow for instantaneous travel like Star Trek: Discovery’s Spore Drive. It also could be used for instant communications. Good stuff but too much of a gamechanger to tinker with. What else could my scientist be studying about sub-hyperspace?

OK dude, realtalk here: why do you feel like you need something else? What you have is fine. You got it! Grab that ball and run with it!

Double realtalk: all I did was google "calligraphy generator" and the first site I hit even offered the full color range and a plethora of effects. Truly, we are living in a golden age.

And here you illustrate another of your problems. Why rule something out just because a working form of it will change the universe? Pretty much all scientific developments come from scientists using the results of their predecessors - either showing them what won't work or by giving them the basics on which to build something new. He could be studying any of the ideas you just listed without affecting the overall timeline - it just becomes his work that later scientists expand on to develop useful capabilities.
(Actually, more likely, if the field is a new discovery he isn't studying any single aspect of sub-hyperspace - he is just studying sub-hyperpsace itself.)

Tinker with it, but a lower scale, maybe it can only work for atoms (or there is some unidentified? problem).
    NOW
We want a 500 words short story for here by Sunday (of your own work) using that, no questions (use a die and dictionary or something). We've insisted on it so take responsibility for any oddities that brings. We won't treat it as cannon.

As for my unwritten story. There are a lot of group detective (think Black Widowers, Find outers, etc...), but when push comes to shove it's always Henry, Fatty, etc... who solves it (and for the most part does anything interesting). I'd like there to be one where there is a more even spread of putting the final piece in.

I don't think it will even remotely done by Sunday. I'm really working on a Venn Diagram, still developing everything. I am so obsessed with this science thing because I usually write well when given a good prompt. I also don't believe you really want to read it; I just think you want to see if I am actually writing a story and not some crazy troll. I AM crazy but I am most certainly not a troll.

That's so much more eloquent than "perfect is the enemy of good."! Now to roll with the less eloquent option. Maxie, what that means is that you're searching for the perfect detail, and in doing so you're passing up good options. There is no perfect detail, so you're going to be looking forever. No writer has ever written a perfect story, but they've written good stories. People who don't write until they get the stairs perfect aren't called writers, because they don't ever actually write. There's no point in trying to figure out the best paint trim on your dream car when you refuse to even get your license til you've figured it out, ya know?
