Default Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)

So, it looks like the SStTitD series is getting a movie this year.

    Yikes.

There are a few teasers that are absolutely SOLID! Easily the film I'm looking forward to the most this year!

I'll watch it, under one condition.

It must not, under any circumstances, contain any elements of the story "Wonderful Sausage".

I think that story left me medically traumatized when I read it as a child. I didn't eat ground meat for two months after reading it, and even though I'm a big fan of King, Poe, and Lovecraft now, I still flinch and look behind me every time I hear the words "wonderful sausage".

    It haunts my nightmares...

What is this? What's going on? Is there a trailer or something that could help me understand the work(s) in question? What's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark?

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is (IMO) a collection of horror stories that were marketed for children in the 80s and 90s.

I word it like that because the stories were pretty creepy no matter your age, and that's before the amazing artwork comes into play. Even though they are children stories, I do recommend tracking down a copy if you can. I think they are worth a read.

I really am not a big fan of horror, but I make an exception for these stories.

I re-read it as an adult and honestly, they are pretty mild. A lot of them are just “spooky” folk
tales that, without the art, aren’t particularly memorable.

Now “Bone-Chilling Tales of Fright”? Those stories are still pretty freaky as an adult.

Fair enough. I count the art as part of the experience for those stories. It could be when I re read them later, I was treating it more as an art collection with a story attached rather than a story collection. That sort of lets your imagination fill in the flaws of the actual stories.

I mean, they're campfire stories. the whole point is that they're scary but not so scary as to traumatize the elementary schoolers that are read them(in most cases, exceptions exist.)

Oh the art is definitely unsettling and terrifiying. It was only when I took the art away (I was planning to use copies of certain stories for a Halloween unit with my ESL class) that I realized the stories read very differently without them.

Kind of like a proto R.L. Stine's Goosebumps?

Sort of. The book is a collection of short stories as opposed to the novel format used by Stine.

    Except far more terrifying.
