    Default Othniel's Tyrant's Grasp (OOC)

Welcome to Tyrant's Grasp. I will be your DM. I shall be running this concurrently with Ironfang Invasion.

The Player's Guide can be downloaded here.

    Spoiler: Character Creation Guidlines
    Show
Number of Players: 4, with whoever is left for alternates.

Abilities: 25 point buy. Short and simple. This will allow you to play what you want.

Level: 1st level, 0 XP, Medium Progression.

    Classes:

Summoner is banned. Unchained Summoner okay.

You may play either the normal or unchained versions of barbarian, monk, or rogue as you prefer. Gunslinger or any archetype that uses guns is banned.

All other classes are fine. No 3rd party.

I highly recommend you do not play a class that has a familiar or companion excepting those listed unless you are prepared to be separated from them for the entirety of Book One. Classes with companions that will have access to their sidekicks: Summoner, Witch, Shaman. Normal or variant multiclassing is fine. Just don't mix the two with the same class (you can't be a Fighter/Rogue and VMC Rogue).

Perhaps the most important thing here is that you will want a team that is self-sufficient and which does not rely upon civilization to support you. Because it won't. This is supposed to be a challenging AP, so please bear that in mind.

Races: All Core or Featured Races are allowed, though playing something like a goblin, hobgoblin, orc, or even a kobold might make social situations difficult (circumstance penalty). The following Uncommon Races are allowed: Changeling, Gillman, Samsaran (I'll be watching you, punk), Suli, and Vishkanya. The following additional races are permitted: Aphorite, Ganzi, Duskwalker*, Gathlain, Ghoran, Skinwalker, and Vine Leshy. All racial variants of permitted races are also permitted. If everyone plays an Aasimar I am going to be disappointed.

*I would enjoy seeing someone (or someones) play a Duskwalker in this AP...for reasons.

Equipment/Wealth: Average starting for your class.

Alignment: Please Evil responsibly. You need to work together in this AP to confront a great evil. A Paladin would fit great, for example, while a non-Tyrant Antipaladin...not so much. An evil person who nonetheless wants to prevent the world from going to crap because he's one of the jerks who wants to live there is just fine, and the Paladin should be able to get along considering what's going down.

HP: Max at first level. Half+1 (d8 = 5) thereafter.

Skill Points: Background Skills will be used. Perception is a class skill for everyone.

Traits: Three from different categories, one of which must be a campaign trait (which you can see in the Player's Guide). No drawbacks. Trapfinder is allowed as a trait and is considered a regional trait from wherever you want to be from.

    Templates: Absolutely no templates.

    Third Party Content: No.

    Miscellaneous:

Charisma checks are required to permanently improve your relationship with an NPC, not Diplomacy, and the DC is highly situational. Attempts at flirtation or seduction are also Charisma checks.
Everyone knows what casting a spell looks like. People will be suspicious or alarmed to see you use any spell with verbal or somatic components without fair warning.

Commoners consider animated dead to be horrifying and will panic on sight. I really don't recommend playing a necromancer of the raising dead type in this AP.

Secret knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive and Appraise checks.

Appraise exists, but you may use a relevant Knowledge skill in its place -- whichever is higher.

You may swap a key ability score for Profession or Performance skills if you ask. E.g., Dance uses Dex, Courtesan uses Charisma.

DM Rolls: In addition to rolls which the DM normally makes (such as Linguistics and Disguise), I will also be rolling your Appraise, Knowledge, Perception, and Sense Motive checks. I will be making these rolls in secret, and players will make rolls in their posts using the forum roller. Rolls should be made in spoiler tags if done in the In Character thread. I will also be making attack and damage rolls in secret this time.

Background: This need not be long, but you are probably from Lastwall. Maybe even from Roslar's Coffer, though you may be from elsewhere and have found yourself here on business or some other reason.

Emerging firearms rules. Advanced firearms exist, but are exceptionally rare and difficult to construct.

Mithral weapons cost 500 gp per pound of original weight, but the cost is capped at a maximum of 2,000 gp. Rejoice, mithral great sword wielders.

You only begin falling when it's your turn.

You may spend a move action to open a door in the middle of your movement.

We will be using Hero Points. Feats and spells pertaining to them are legal, so long as they are not 3rd party. You do not have the option of taking a bonus feat instead. Hero Points will be awarded as it says on the page, and you may gain them for villainous acts as well as heroic acts.

Barding: As the rules aren't clear on how to calculate the price of barding with regard to special materials, and considering that animal companions are already a bit of a gold sink, I will allow you to calculate the price thusly: Take the normal price for the armor and multiply it by the number in the table for barding costs (x4 for a large-sized, non-humanoid). Then add 150g for Masterwork and whatever cost your Special Materials require.

Feats: Feat Tax Relief is in full effect. Arithmancy and Sacred Geometry (and other similar feats) are megasuperbanned. Leadership and Leadership-alikes are also banned. Orator is modified as follows: No prerequisite, but it switches any two of Bluff/Diplomacy/Intimidate to be Int-based, rather than Cha-based.

Anyone may take Combat Stamina as a feat. Fighters do not get it for free.

Spoiler: Full Feat Tax Rules In Effect
    Show
    Feat Tax Relief:
Combat feats like Weapon Focus now apply to weapon groups (see Fighter page) instead of a specific weapon by default. (Martial Mastery removed)

The “light weapons” category has been renamed to “finesse weapons.” Characters can choose to use either their dexterity bonus or their strength bonus to hit and damage with these weapons, no feat required. In effect, all finesse weapons have the Agile enchantment as a feature. “Finesse” is also now a weapon attribute like “brace” or “trip,” allowing a weapon in another category to be finessed (like the rapier). (Weapon Finesse removed)

For the purpose of any feat that requires Weapon Finesse, or any of the "X Grace" feats (adding dex to damage in place of strength), you will be assumed to possess that feat so long as you are using an appropriate "Finesse Weapon" for the feat or ability.

A character adds their dexterity to the CMB if they’re wielding a finesse weapon and their strength otherwise. (Agile Maneuvers removed)

Combat Expertise is now a combat option for any class with at least +1 BAB. (Combat Expertise removed)

Deft Maneuvers: You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when performing a trip, disarm, dirty trick, feint, reposition, or steal combat maneuver. In addition, you receive a +2 bonus on checks with these combat maneuvers. Now a prerequisite for the relevant greater combat maneuver feats. (Replaces Improved Trip, Improved Disarm, Improved Dirty Trick, Improved Feint, Improved Reposition, Improved Steal)

Power Attack, Deadly Aim, and Piranha Strike are now combat options for any class with at least +1 BAB. (Power Attack, Deadly Aim, and Piranha Strike removed)

Powerful Maneuvers: You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when performing a bull rush, drag, overrun, or sunder combat maneuver. In addition, you receive a +2 bonus on checks with these combat maneuvers. Now a prerequisite for the relevant greater combat maneuver feats.

Point Blank Precision: Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot are combined.

Dodge: You gain a +1 dodge bonus to your AC. This bonus increases to +4 against attacks of opportunity caused when you move out of or within a threatened tile. A condition that makes you lose your Dex bonus to AC also makes you lose the benefits of this feat. (Dodge Combined with Mobility)

Improved Two-Weapon Fighting: Improved Two-Weapon Fighting merged with Greater Two-Weapon Fighting.

Greater Two-Weapon Fighting: Prerequisites now Dex 17, Two-Weapon Fighting, BAB +6. In addition to the standard single extra attack you get with an off-hand weapon, you get a second attack with it, albeit at a –5 penalty. Once your BAB reaches +11, you also gain a third attack with your off-hand weapon, albeit at a –10 penalty.

Monstrous Mount and Monstrous Mount Mastery are combined into one feat. Your mount automatically gets the mastery upgrade at the listed level.

Spoiler: Character Stuff From the Book
    Show
This stuff was shoved in the book in case anyone wants to use it:

    Spoiler: Reaper Oracle Mystery
    Show
    Reaper (Oracle Mystery)
Oracles with the reaper mystery strive to quiet restless souls, end lives, and send souls to their final reward.

    Deities: Achaekek, Groetus, Pharasma.

Class Skills: An oracle with this mystery adds Intimidate, Perception, Stealth, and Survival to her list of class skills.

Bonus Spells: Chill touch (2nd), calm spirit (4th), sands of timeUM (6th), purge spirit (8th), slay living (10th), undeath to death (12th), destruction (14th), horrid withering [should probably be horrid wilting?] (16th), wail of the banshee (18th).

Revelations: An oracle with the reaper mystery can choose from any of the following revelations.

Death’s Embrace (Su): You gain Improved Grapple as a bonus feat, even if you do not meet its prerequisites. Once per round when you succeed at a grapple combat maneuver check, you can deal 1d6 points of negative energy damage to the target of your grapple. This damage increases by 1d6 at 5th level and every 5 levels thereafter, to a maximum of 5d6 at 20th level.

Haunt Channeler (Su): You gain the medium’s haunt channeler class feature (Pathfinder RPG Occult Adventures 31) with an effective medium level equal to your oracle level –2. You must be at least 5th level to select this revelation.

Moral Crisis (Su): As a standard action, you can target a living creature within 30 feet of you, reminding it of itsmoral failings. The target must succeed at a Will save or be staggered for a number of rounds equal to your oracle level. The target can attempt a new saving throw at the end of each of its turns to end this effect. This is a mind-affecting emotion effect.

Obliterate Memory (Sp): As a standard action, you can target a creature within 30 feet and eliminate all memory of an event the target experienced, as modify memory. A target can attempt a Will save to negate this effect. In addition, you can cause an account of the memory erased by this ability to appear on a blank page of any book you are carrying. You can use this ability once per day, plus one additional time per day at 15th level. You must be at least 11th level to select this revelation.

Pale Horse (Sp): You can summon a phantom steed, as the spell, to serve you for a number of hours per day equal to your oracle level. This duration does not need to be consecutive, but it must be spent in 1-hour increments. You must be at least 5th level to select this revelation.

Return to Dust (Su): You call upon the inexorable ravages of time and entropy to damage an object or undead creature within 30 feet, dealing 1d6 points of damage per 2 oracle levels you have, ignoring hardness and damage reduction. If used against an undead creature or an object in another creature’s possession, the undead creature or the creature possessing the object can attempt a Reflex saving throw to halve the damage. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier.

Spectral Spells (Su): You gain Ectoplasmic SpellAPG as a bonus feat. In addition, once per day, you can cast a spell with the Ectoplasmic Spell metamagic feat as a standard action that does not increase the level of the spell. You can use this ability one additional time per day at 7th level and every 4 levels thereafter.

Spirit Touch (Su): As a standard action, you can touch one weapon to grant it the ghost touch special ability for a number of rounds equal to your Charisma modifier. At 11th level, you can spend two uses of this ability to grant it the ghost touch and undead bane special abilities. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Charisma modifier.

Terminal Aura (Su): You gain an aura with a 10-foot radius; any creature within that has fewer than 0 hit points but is stable must succeed at a Will save or be affected by the spell bleed. A dying creature within range of this aura does not receive a Constitution check to stabilize unless it succeeds at a Will save, but it can still be healed as normal. A creature with fast healing or regeneration must also succeed at a Will save every round or that ability does not function for 1 round. You can suppress and resume this aura as a free action. You must be at least 11th level to select this revelation.

True Death (Su): Those slain by your spells or by one of your attacks that deals negative energy becomes more difficult to bring back from the dead. Spellcasters attempting to bring such a creature back from the dead using raise dead or similar magic must succeed at a caster level check with a DC equal to 15 + your oracle level or the spell fails and the material component is wasted. A successful casting of remove curse (DC = 10 + your oracle level) before attempting to bring the creature back from the dead suppresses this effect for 1 minute.

    Spoiler: Soul Shepherd Monk Archetype
    Show
    Soul Shepherd (Monk Archetype)

Whether studying at the feet of psychopomps or merely imitating the creatures’ philosophy and methods, soul shepherds believe in safeguarding the Cycle of Souls.

Calming Strike (Su): As an immediate action after hitting an incorporeal undead creature with an unarmed strike, a soul shepherd can attempt to calm the creature, encouraging it to move peacefully to the next stage of its metaphysical journey. The target must succeed at a Will save (DC = 10 + half soul shepherd’s level + the soul shepherd’s Wisdom modifier) or be calmed, as calm spiritOA, for 1 minute.
The soul shepherd can use this ability against a haunt by making a touch attack against an AC of 10 + the haunt’s CR. A haunt does not receive a saving throw against this ability, but the ability’s duration changes to concentration + 1 round, up to 1 round per level. A soul shepherd can use this ability a number of times per day equal to his soul shepherd level.

    This replaces stunning fist.

Otherworldly Resilience (Ex): At 2nd level, a soul shepherd gains DR 2/adamantine, cold resistance 5, and electricity resistance 5. At 9th level, this improves to DR 5/adamantine, cold resistance 10, and electricity resistance 10.

This replaces evasion and improved evasion.

Spirit Sense (Su): At 12th level, a soul shepherd can spend 1 point from his ki pool as a swift action to grant himself the ability to notice, locate, and distinguish between living and undead creatures within 30 feet, just as if he had a psychopomp’s spiritsense ability (Pathfinder RPG Bestiary 4 308) for a number of rounds equal to his Wisdom modifier (minimum 1).

This replaces abundant step. (For the unchained monk from Pathfinder Unchained, this replaces the ki power gained at 12th level.)

Yamaraj’s Judgment (Sp): At 15th level, a soul shepherd can spend 1 point from his ki pool as a standard action to attempt to free an enslaved soul from an effect that is imprisoning it, such as soul bind or trap the soul. This functions as a targeted dispel magic spell with a caster level equal to the soul shepherd’s level. He can spend an additional ki point when he activates this ability to gain a +4 bonus on the caster level check. If the soul is held prisoner by a creature or a non-spell effect, the soul shepherd frees it if his caster level check result is at least 11 + the creature or effect’s CR.

This replaces quivering palm. (For the unchained monk from Pathfinder Unchained, this ability is gained at 16th level and replaces the ki power gained at 16th level.)

    Spoiler: Barbarian Rage Powers
    Show
    Barbarian Rage Powers

The following rage powers are available to any barbarian or skald who meets their prerequisites. Barbarians who select the psychopomp totem seek to guide souls to their last rest.

Inured to the Dead: Once per rage, when the barbarian fails a saving throw against an effect created by an undead creature, she can reroll the saving throw. She must use the second result, even if it is worse. This does not require spending an action. A barbarian must be at least 4th level to select this rage power.

Psychopomp Totem: The first time each round a creature with regeneration or fast healing is struck by the barbarian while she is raging, the creature must succeed at a Will save (DC = 10 + half the barbarian’s level + the barbarian’s Strength modifier) or that ability is suppressed for 1 round. A barbarian must have the lesser psychopomp totem rage power and be at least 6th level to select this rage power.

Psychopomp Totem, Greater: While raging, the barbarian can detect and locate undead creatures within 30 feet, just as if it had the blindsight ability, and any weapons she wields are treated as if they had the ghost touch special ability. A barbarian must have the psychopomp totem rage power and be at least 10th level to select this rage power.

Psychopomp Totem, Lesser: While raging, the barbarian gains a +1 deflection bonus to AC against the attacks of undead creatures and a +1 bonus on saving throws against death effects, diseases, and poisons. This bonus increases by 1 for each psychopomp totem rage power she has, excepting this one.

Spiritual Awareness: While raging, the barbarian’s dodge bonus to AC from trap sense applies against attacks made by incorporeal creatures. The barbarian must have trap sense to select this ability.

Unrestrained Rage: While raging, the barbarian is immune to paralysis. If the barbarian is targeted by an effect that would cause her to become paralyzed, she can enter a rage as an immediate action, as long as she still has rounds of rage remaining. A barbarian must be at least 12th level to select this rage power.

    Spoiler: Duskwalker Feats
    Show
    Majesty of the Yamaraj

The magistrates of death can breathe death and decay. You were in the presence of a final judge once and your soul remembers that moment still.

Prerequisites: Channel energy 5d6, duskwalker, ghost hunter racial trait.

Benefit: When you channel positive energy to harm undead, you can expend your ghost hunter racial ability as a free action. Your channeled energy takes the form of spectral beetles and other insectile scavengers, dealing 50% more damage to the undead. You also gain an additional daily use of ghost hunter.

    Morrigna’s Wrappings

One of the Boneyard’s psychopomp bounty hunters has taught you the trick of using spider webs to defend against the undead.

Prerequisites: Character level 9th, duskwalker, ward against corruption racial trait.

Benefit: So long as you have a spider web wrapped around some part of your body, the bonus provided by your ward against corruption racial trait increases to +4.

    Nosoi’s Spiritsense

Even the lowliest psychopomp can sniff out the undead. A whippoorwill in a papier-mâché mask taught you how to do it.

    Prerequisite: Duskwalker.

Benefit: You can cast detect undead as a spell-like ability at will. Your caster level for the purpose of this effect is equal to your character level.

    Shoki’s Argument

The collectors of the lost dead prefer to use complex theology or blunt warnings to gather wayward spirits, but sometimes a more direct approach is necessary. One of them shared a trade secret with you.

Prerequisites: Ability to cast disrupt undead, character level 3rd, duskwalker.

Benefit: The damage dealt by your disrupt undead spell increases by 1d6. It increases by an additional 1d6 at 6th level and every 3 levels thereafter (to a maximum of 7d6 at 18th level).

    Vanth’s Scythe

You’ve seen the reapers many times, and have learned something of their methods.

Prerequisites: Character level 9th, duskwalker, ghost hunter racial trait.

Benefit: When you use your ghost hunter racial trait to grant a scythe, quarterstaff, whip, or bow the ghost touch weapon special ability, you also grant the undead-bane weapon special ability. You also gain an additional daily use of ghost hunter.

Posting to explicitly express interest, subscribe to the thread, and put down a link to my submission. Meet Henrietta, the Duskwalker Fighter and itinerant Shelynite. Having recently lost her mentor to illness and lacking further instruction in the art of connecting with the divine, which had been her primary ambition, she has gone into Roslar's Coffer in a bid to try and reconnect with the circumstances of her 'birth', and hopefully find the inspiration to break through. (In OOC terms: She is starting out as a fighter and thereafter going into inquisitor. The plan is to fluff the first level of fighting as the mental breakthrough needed to make that initial connection with Shelyn and call upon the power to cast divine spells. Her primary role will be as an agile front-liner, sometimes buffer, and monster hunter/tracker.)

    Cotyledon, ghoran shaman

    (Or 'Coty' for short)

    Role: healer, general swiss-army caster

    Spoiler: Background
    Show

There simply isn't enough time to cover Cotyledon's earliest memories and history. She came into sentience as a hunted food item, pursued by starving peasants and eventually bored nobles. She remembers when Nex granted her race citizenship and outlawed murdering Ghorans for food. And she remembers when Nex died or disappeared... whatever his fate, the archmage was gone, and with him went the security that the Ghoran hunts would never rise again.
While many of her kind went deeper into the Mana Wastes to form defensible communities, Coty chose to wander. Of her adventures, lives, friends, and enemies, only she can really elaborate. She won and lost, was born anew, and watched the passing of ages.
    And then Aroden died.
The god of humanity was gone, and Coty found that she could sympathize. She barely remembers Ghorus, or even if he still lived when she first came to sentience; the fate of the legendary renegade druid remains murky and lost to the sands of time. But Ghorus was in some ways the god of the Ghorans, their creator. When he disappeared, he left his 'children' adrift, but the Ghorans endured. Since the onset of the Age of Lost Omens, Coty has wandered much of Avistan, following the history of Aroden and his foes and allies. Now finding herself in Lastwall, Coty is closer to the cursed resting grounds of Aroden's most dogged nemesis than ever before.

Cotyledon is a practitioner of shamanistic magic, channeling the spirits of all ghorans past. Although dead ghorans are now permanently lost, their lingering spiritual energy remains, becoming a battery of powerful positive energy and the irrepressible life-force of their immortal physiology. Now in her 233rd iteration, Coty is comparatively weak and vulnerable, and so seeks a modicum of stability to put down roots and gather her strength before plumbing the region of clues, always seeking to understand Aroden's death and links to the possible propagation of her dwindling kind.

[more fluff pending, also see sheet]

When asked, 'How do you like your eggs?':

Coty tilts her head slightly to the side, then after a moment says, "Sunny side up!"
The petals beneath her eyes shift upwards, reminiscent of eyelids crinkling with amusement. She puts her hand delicately to her 'mouth' and giggles. The smell of baked bread with cinnamon and cloves wafts faintly in the air.
"Of course, I don't eat food. I get the energy I need from sunlight, you see? But I am certain your eggs would be delicious had I a tongue with which to taste them!
We ghorans aren't in the habit of asking how we like our water or sunshine served, but perhaps we should? It's subtle, but the sunrise off the shores of Rhahadoum feels different than mornings in the moors of Ustalav, for instance. I'm not sure I've the words to adequately describe it; Taldane was designed for eggs and toast, not roots and rain and a breeze at dusk."
