Re: Roland's Merciful Modly Mash-up Random Banter Thread #221
Well I need to rant.
SpoilerIn short, my shifts next week for moved.
To be more specific they got moved without asking me, to include a day out had been agreed I get off, and when I raised objections I just got told 'I have to work when the company needs me to'. So the fact I've been lied to (twice over*) about having the day off doesn't meant anything, the fact that I could easily have spent over £100 organising something to do on that day doesn't matter, the fact that I wasn't asked about the day doesn't matter (I didn't even have anything planned and would have happily swapped it if asked), all that matters is that my manager decided I needed to work Saturday instead of Sunday.
Plus the only reason I know about it is that I had a shift today, if I wasn't in I wouldn't have been told that the rota was updated and would have to rely on one of my co-workers remembering next time I'm in.
But apparently that's nothing to get annoyed over. Because all that matters is that the manager didn't have to move their shifts.
*Once when I was told I could have Saturdays off, once again when the original rota came out and said I got next Saturday off.

Re: Roland's Merciful Modly Mash-up Random Banter Thread #221
Soooo, .. .. ..
I am in the middle of a practical joke on our chief engineer. He is a bit ocd and I had these enclosures stacked on a shelf that have a 7/8" hole on one end and I had them alll stacked with the hole showing except a couple of them as they were turned around. They were not easy to get to because I had buried them in the middle of the stack. Inside one of the enclosures I had the word 'Gottcha' on a piece of paper.
He found it as he was turning them around behind my back, which was fortunate as I was grinning ear to ear.
So stage two has been going on for about 2 weeks now: the cool down period. I have not continued to torment his OCD, but I have been amassing more of the same enclosures, some turned around, but no tricks. In the mean time stage three is being built. It is a bad enclosure that I have put a slug in the hole and a piece of metal that has been blackened to keep it in place. I love super glue. I will put some picture in the inside of a meme. I had an idea cooked up but now I cant remember what it was: Something to do with a mouse trap and Dr. Wile E. C.. I cannot wait to spring the trap on him in this up-coming week.Has any one seen my jar of anti-protons or my cyclotron of positrons?

That's just mean.
And more than a little wasteful, if you know one of the enclosures is bad and you're leaving it (and damaging it further) for a prank instead of whatever the proper means of disposal is.

I've been working as a part-time interpreter and it is more stressful than I had imagined. People mercilessly use difficult and culture/language-specific terms and I feel so dumb and incompetent when I'm unable to translate stuff smoothly. Translating phrases and ideas from and to English is difficult when you don't have time to do some research and check things from Google.

Re: Roland's Merciful Modly Mash-up Random Banter Thread #221
Buckle up, you're in for a wild ride.
Jimmy Carter visited Poland in 1977. The State Department hired a translator, Steven Seymour. His Polish was apparently better on paper; among the highlights were Carter talking about his departure being translated as "I left the United States this morning, never to return," and Carter talking about being happy to be there, interested in understanding their opinions, and wanting to know their hopes for future relations being translated as "I desire the Poles carnally."
Now, as you can imagine, he was immediately fired. The State Department then turned to Jerzy Krycki, who was verified to be perfectly fluent in Polish. His turn came at a state dinner. Unfortunately, his English wasn't as good as his Polish, and after the immediately infamous previous interpreter issues, Krycki was not inclined to make a mistake. So he opted to stay completely silent. During the speech that he was hired to translate for.
Krycki did not keep his job any longer than Seymour, but at least he didn't make it sound like the President of the United States told an entire country, "I came to **** and I ain't goin' back."
Which is funny to hear about and all, but it was about as confusing as if a German came to NYC and said "I am the New Yorker." Nobody would think that person was claiming to be a satirical magazine.Last edited by Peelee; 2019-03-23 at 02:58 PM.

There are rumors about it.
Also, you shouldn't mess with people's OCD on purpose. They're already doing things like washing their hands until they bleed; you don't need to make it even worse.Last edited by enderlord99; 2019-03-23 at 02:53 PM.

Depression attacks/panic attacks/whatever I just had would be at least CR30 in D&D.
Why can't they even have reliable triggers? This once came from an unrelated poem after a friend briefly mentioned one of my hangups. Couldn't even summon the energy to read a book until I'd started to come back to normal.

Re: Roland's Merciful Modly Mash-up Random Banter Thread #221
I didn't know that. I googled the incident and I also read your description. Thank you. That made me think of funny incidents that have occurred when I have spoken a foreign language. Many many many years ago, I told an American customer that he had called the wrong place and he should contact the right place, so I gave him the phone number and told him: "You have to contact yourself". I wasn't aware that in English, there is a difference between "You have to contact them yourself" and "You have to contact yourself". I imagined that they meant the same thing. The American was rather amused but he was okay with the advice.

Most people who actually have OCD are incredibly messy, except for the things about which they obsess.
That said, if somebody pulled this sort of stuff on me, I would respond by changing their keyboard language to Polish or Russian. Another engineer and I had a prank war going for a good 6 months before we realised that installing a second keyboard made one of the shortcuts default to changing the keyboard between American and Polish.

Re: how was your day
Uneventful. I woke up around noon. Took care of the roomys cat and read web comics untill about 8. Then I assisted a friend with his ark server till 9.
After that I watched Doom Patrol and the Orville, and binged youtube. Im about to eat dinner(pbj on toast, with apple cinnamon oatmeal) and will go to bed after.

It was good, except I had to get up early, and I tossed and turned all night, so I've been staving off sleep all afternoon. We're starting to approach an acceptable sleeptime tho.

Remember last thread, when I used the character sequence "{)}" when venting about how my parents made me paranoid?
I'm kinda proud of using that sequence in a way that (almost) made sense.

It wasn't all sarcastic, but the part in the parenthetical was.
I'm not proud of the post as a whole; I'm only proud of the fact that I'm innovating upon my sarcasm-indicator... and even then, only a bit proud.
The description of the context was probably unneeded.
EDIT: Nice haul, Peelee! Are those shrimp, prawns, or... freshwater lobsters? I know they're not saltwater lobsters because they're not big enough.
I don't know what word you use for freshwater lobsters, so I chose the least-regional term I could find.
META-EDIT: The claws are big. They are neither shrimp nor prawns. What do you call those things?Last edited by enderlord99; 2019-03-26 at 02:40 PM.
