    ION:
Had a pair of friends over for our quarterly "learn the German to play board games" session. Basically, I and a board gaming friend are teaching a mutual friend who visits Sweden roughly 4 times a year board games. The goal is to get them ready to try Terraforming Mars, but since that's a way too complex game for a complete novice to try, we've started with some much simpler games.

We've already gone through Ticket to Ride and Isle of Sky in earlier sessions, and the plan for today was Thurn und Taxis. None of us veterans had actually played it, but it seemed to be in the right difficulty category so we had a go at it. And suffered a pretty embarrassing defeat! My veteran friend concluded that it's a good game, but the player interaction is pretty slim. Once someone is already winning, there's not a lot you can do to stop them.

We had time left after the first game, so on pure impulse I brought out Castles of Mad King Ludwig. It's a really good game, but also quite a step up in complexity. I ended up outclassing the others pretty badly in it, but our German friend still liked it and thought they may be ready to play it another time to get a hang of the rules.

They did lament not having any friends at home to play any board game with more depth than Cluedo with. Sounds like a living nightmare to me. A life without board games, oh horror!

I just love having a messed up brain that means I hate myself and act like a jerk to people who care about me.

Thanks doctors, for deciding the fact that I don't meet the cutoff point for a diagnosis means that there's nothing wrong with me.

(In short I have some symptoms of depression, some of anxiety, and maybe of other conditions, but I don't actually have any of those things! So apparently I'm mentally healthy.)

As far as complex board games go, I wouldn't say Terraforming Mars is too bad rules wise. It has a bit of mechanic, but it isn't one of those games where even experienced players constantly have to check the rules booklet just to remind themselves of how the rules work. That said, the balancing of multiple stockpiles while choosing which strategies to pursue or abandon is not kind to novices.

I mean this as respectfully as possible; This is a dull, lifeless comment. There have been some fantastic, beautiful, amazing dreams that have been remembered, and likely many more that have not been. And while, ultimately, it's a residual effect of the brain sorting through itself to organize itself for the next day, I must ask you this question.

How come you phrase this as though "meaningless noise" is a bad thing? Why does something need meaning?

And, importantly, sometimes you want to enjoy meaningless noise.

Dreams can be entertaining. However the few that I can recall make sense only with the presence of feelings which can not be helpfully communicated using words, rendering retellings of little interest. I find they tend to be a series of 'and then this happened, but it was like this', which is not really interesting to listen to.

They can be enjoyable in the moment, and many of them often are, but the experience can not really be shared. And of course they do not have any real meaning except as a representation of subconscious thought. I of course do not begrudge you—or anyone—the enjoyment they provide. As you said, not everything needs meaning.

I do wonder if y'all can help me with something. I have a memory from around early childhood and I am not sure if it a dream or a book I read. Has anyone come across a children's books wherein some kids (they are all from one family) find a magical tree that goes up forever? The tree has levels of branches and clouds, which become progressively weirder, and there is a slide in the trunk to descend. I remember one had a merry go round, but not the contents of others. There are 'gatekeepers' of sorts between levels.

I'm a little jealous of folks who have actually nice dreams. Not that I have constant nightmares or anything, I rarely dream at all, but when I do, it's just... weird stuff. Not scary, not awful, just weird. Like, one of the few dreams in my life that I remember was when I was young and I dreamed I was being chased around a convenience store by a bunch of frozen fish. They weren't even swimming through the air, they were just kind of bouncing on the ground after me.

That's the kind of dumb whiffle my brain comes up with when I'm asleep. I wouldn't mind just one dream where my brain is going 'hey, let's imagine if this thing you aspire to happened!' and not 'hey, let's explore your underlying phobia of being assaulted by frozen fish'.

Just finished painting the ceilings in the bathrooms, and went ahead and got the kitchen for good measure. Also, turns out I didn't need shims for the toilet, I just needed to tighten the bolts a bit more (I was kind of paranoid about that, but it worked out perfect) so now, bathrooms all have upgraded faucets and handles, upgraded hardware, upgraded toilets, and newly painted walls (sans wallpaper) and ceilings.

I think I'm finally done with the bathrooms. Oh joyous day!

I don't tend to dream often, but when I do it's always strange and vivid. From flying away from a hospital on a pair of wings, to being held captive in a tower by a princess, to being hunted and killed by a panther in my childhood home...

    Dreams are weird.

    Take a deep breath, relax.
Now, if you want to discuss this issue try to remember this is the friendly banter subforum. Yelling and cussing might help you vent your frustration but it isn’t very nice for everybody else.

I'll admit that they're probably well written and it's just the way the synopsis presents them but my initial impression of them before actually reading into what they actually are is that they're a bunch of anthro fantasy cat-warriors. I did not expect it to be real, legit feral cats living in the woods of Missourie or some ****. I didn't realize humans and actual domesticated cats were involved.

Oh, I'm sorry, I mean Twolegs and kittypets. Kittypets. "Kittypets" she mewed. Because they're cats you see, they can't say things they mew them.

Again, I realize I'm one to talk given I'm a YA author (though I only use one term even remotely fantastical and it makes logistic sense and doesn't sound weird to say outloud) but there's just... overwhelmingly embarrassing feeling about these books that I can't quite place my finger on. And the... the world building, were every cat has two names if they're a warrior, and how all the names are based on things cats would have knowledge of, but also the cats have doctors and shamans who speak to the spirits of dead cats, it's just... I don't know. It feels uniquely childish in a way I can't really reconcile with. Not that childish things are bad, in fact it's important to like childish things sometimes. But this feels like a step too far in my head.

I don't begrudge anyone from reading and enjoying them, and can probably see myself trying out the series just to get a better feel for how it actually plays out on page, but there's a disconnect in my brain with this book series I don't quite understand.
