    Turn 5

    War Flares Up Yet Again
The biggest event of the past five years is the attack on Sigma Kuldav by the entire Collective fleet. Most nobles laugh when discussing the democratic collective and their Grand Armada. They refer to its a pretentious name for a rag tag band of rebels. For after all what can commoners know of true warfare.

It turns out they can know quite a lot. The Collective opens with scores of battleships that wade through the close defenses of the warp gate and clear a path for their main fleet. The costs is paid in burning hulks and dead crews, but the Collective just sends more battleships pouring through the gate in a wall of armor. As the foothold is established they follow with hundreds of smaller escorts that spread out around the heavier capital ships and carrier groups that launch fighters wings to cover all approaches. But the cream of the Collective fleet follows last. A massive dreadnought so large it strains the capacity of the warp gate itself. 10 kilometers of armor alloy and wrapped around a massive planetary siege weapon and enough turrets to fight a fleet by itself. The Revolution would be the pride of any Navy in the Imperium and the Collective knows it as they give it pride of place in the siege on the Imperial capital.

Things do not look good for Crown Princess Persephone as her forces are vastly outnumbered. But even so the fact that she is even there at all comes as a surprise to the Collective's admirals who were apparently expecting her to focus on Cordoba. What passes next is a grueling two year long siege as the Crown Princess sorties her forces against the Collective while it pounds on the planetary shields of Sigma Kuldav.

Fortunately for noble honor everywhere and particularly the House Laramy the tide turns when Archduke Alexander leads his own forces into the fight. Catching the collective's armada between them the Laramy siblings proceed to inflict heavy damage and force the Collective to give up the space it has taken. The last ship out is the Revolution, which holds off the entire Laramy force alone long enough for the Collective forces to retreat back through the warp gate.

    The Fall of Byvale
The honor of the nobility might have been retained in the center of the Imperium, but it takes a heavy blow in the Byvale sector as the House of Steel makes good on its declaration to establish a new order. The massive Steel fleet spread through the sector forcing earls into compliance. It does however encounter unexpected resistance in the territory claimed by the Triune pact.

A volunteer force led by House Gilkara with additional support from House Starosta and various minor noble houses appears to defend the earls of the Pact. They are rather overwhelmingly defeated. The House of Steel's reputation as the premier mercenary organization in the Imperium is not an idle one.

Still everyone agrees that a valiant defense was given, especially by House Gilkara, and it does give enough time for the Triune Pact to evacuate most of their assets to the Dorvale Sector.

    Territorial Ambitions
Elsewhere in the Imperium things are more ambiguous. House Ytterbus and House Barlow quickly conquer a neighboring system each, but it is the House Arnos and House Greenflame who make the biggest moves as each one uses their military prowess to bring entire clusters under their control.

    Lighter Tidings
Warfare is not the only thing on everyone's minds. Rumors are that Tatarus is planning some grand surprise which most are looking forward to. And of course eager ears wait for news about the Zaqaru's Quest for Zanadu. While those with a more political leaning keep a keen eye on the start of the Hallow Conference.

    Zaqaru Inheritance

The Zaqaru Dynasty has several inheritance laws in place for its Duke title. They can be abbreviated as follows:

    • The Council, consisting of five noble positions, votes on candidates, with the candidate obtaining the most votes being the heir to the title of Duke. Should there be a tie, the last will of the former Duke is decisive.
    • The Duke will abdicate the title to their heir between the age of 80 and 84, at the passing of a year divisible by 5.
    • Valid candidates are the children and siblings of the current holder. Should any candidate have died or be ineligible due to age, their children become valid candidates, unless they are dead or ineligible due to age, where their children become valid candidates, and so on.

In general, Zaqaru earl and count vassals also abdicate their titles between the age of 80 and 84, at the passing of a year divisible by 5.

    Candidates

    • Sinma, son
    • Ilith, daughter
    • Nocri, older sister, married, has children
    • Abus, older brother, married, has children
    • Eshkit, older sister, not married, has no children
    • Puabi, younger sister, married, has no children

Duke Nabuna Zaqaru stands to abdicate in 25 Years.
OOC: The start of Turn 10.

The votes of the Council on the candidates is currently not public information. Often, in the decade before the Duke stands to abdicate, the votes become public through various channels. The Council members do have an opinion and vote currently, which they may, or may not, be willing to share to those who ask.

Please note that Council members may change their opinion based on new arguments or external influence. In addition, Council members themselves will change over time, and new Council members may hold different opinions.

Public information regarding the candidates is not actively shared at current, though there are old records (read: old posts) on several of them. Those wishing more information about candidates are free to for more and may, or may not, get useful information.

    Zaqaru Ball

Each Noble House is invited to attend the Zaqaru Ball. A grand event hosted by the Zaqaru Dynasty for single nobles to find wedding partners or fiancées. Each single may bring along an escort, such as their parents or guardians, and this is expected for any under the age of 20, as the event caters to young and old.

The Zaqaru Ball is famous, as it is a regular event hosted each few decades by the head of the Dynasty for guests to find wedding partners. While the main reason is to find wedding partners for Duke Nabuna Zaqaru’s children, the Ball draws attendees from across the Imperium and many of the attendees will be sure to use the opportunity to find wedding attendees amongst the other guests.

Held at the magnificent Erit Palace, a grand Palace with a diplomatic focus, lying close to the spaceport of the expansive metropolis Erit, the largest city in Zaqaru space and main city of the capital planet Athon in the Marqash system. The Erit Palace is well known for its marvellous architecture and expansive use of precious materials in construction and interior decoration. It is also home to the largest Ballroom in known space and boasts a long history of hosting the Zaqaru Balls.
    Zaqaru Marriage Traditions

Marriages between noble houses is held to be a prestigious affair to Zaqaru, hence why they host the Zaqaru Balls. Any marriage between the current ruler or the close relatives of the current rulers with a partner which is the ruler of another House or is a close relative to the ruler of the other House is seen as establishing a close bond between the families.

As consequence, Zaqaru tradition demands a non-aggression pact should be offered with the marriage contract. This pact will hold for as long as the marriage lasts up until both reach the age of 80, remain alive and close enough in family relation to the current ruler of both houses. A close relative is considered a sibling, child, grandchild, parent or grandparent.

The Zaqaru Dynasty will currently invest 20 Prestige in any such marriage with a non-aggression pact. Suggesting a marriage with a close relative without such a non-aggression pact is considered an insult. Likewise, filing for divorce unilaterally while the marriage has a non-aggression pact is considered an act of aggression and will break the marriage contract and pact.

Any marriage between relatives which are not close relatives to the current ruler do not symbolise such a bond, but will foster a better relationship with the Zaqaru Dynasty. It will be easier to negotiate a non-aggression pact. Any marriage leading to a non-aggression pact will also make members of the Zaqaru Dynasty more willing to form alliances. Zaqaru values family.

Marriages with a heir candidate are expected to have the children by recognised of the Zaqaru lineage and carry the last name and not the lineage and last name of the partner. This may be up for negotiation, should they marry to a current ruler of another family. In any event the children are to be recognised as the lineage of the partner, the marriage contract will detail that the children forsake claims on the Zaqaru titles.

Partners are selected based on a number of factors. Especially for heir candidates, they will consider the family of the proposed partner and diplomatic benefit. Officially Zaqaru family members are free to choose their partner as long as they marry those of noble lineage. While marriage out of love is allowed, everyone is expected to think of the family. Depending on the situation, some experience a lot of freedom to choose their partners, while others are pressured into arranged betrothals by their parents from a young age.

Fabulous wealth is on display in the Erit Palace, where the Zaqaru Ball is held. Archways of gold, chandeliers of diamond, emerald decoration on silver walls, the abundance of precious metals and gems used in the interior is obvious. They call to the origin of the Zaqaru wealth, as they have made and are making their fortune from mineral wealth mined throughout the worlds and asteroid belts of Zaqaru.

Similar wealth is visible in the clothes and jewelry worn by the Zaqaru family members attending the Ball. Precious gems woven in fabric, pure gold bracelets, radiant ruby rings and much more. Their wear is stylish, colourful and extremely expensive. On top of that, most of them know the intricacies of the dance well, as balls are far from uncommon amongst Zaqaru nobles. Beautiful music guides the guests to the different ballrooms full of splendour, both in decoration as well as people.

Dancing from ballroom to ballroom, the differences are apparent. The main ballroom is for the introductions, the official business, the dances to put oneself on display. Classical ballroom music fills the room and the dancing is a pleasure to watch. Other ballrooms offer more contemporary music, dance music or in the small ballrooms more exotic genres related to the dance. One ballroom is clearly meant for a younger audience, as teenagers and children dance with another and the event starts with dancing lessons. Parents and guardians alike gather here to watch the young dance and matches are already being made or at least attempted. Just one ballroom next to it is the ballroom with dancing lessons for adults, catering to those who wish to refine their dancing paces while offering another opportunity to meet.

Between all the ballrooms are hallways, as well as niches, allowing for private conversations and meetings, allowing for the opportunity to slip away from the music and the dance to get to know another better. Or discuss other matters, such as those of a more political nature, or discussing marriage contract conditions.

The Zaqaru Ball caters to many, for if one does not fancy a night full of dancing, the drinks and food will make up for it, as it is the finest imported from throughout the galaxy.

    Eshkit Zaqaru
    Age: 62

Present at the previous Zaqaru Ball, she was unfortunate not to find a suitor and is willing to give it another shot at this Ball. She is the sister of Duke Nabuna Zaqaru, without child and a widow from before the previous Zaqaru Ball. She is well versed in the sciences. Known to be somewhat of a sloth, this may explain why she has in the years between not found a husband either.

    Other Relatives

There are several other Zaqaru relatives attending the ball, such as Aburnar, a 20 year old single male, grandchild of Nocri Zaqaru, sister of Duke Nabuna Zaqaru. His younger sisters, Nannu and Lila of respectively 12 and 11 are also attending, though spending most of their time in the Ballroom intended for children. Other, more distant, relatives are attending as well. This includes Diplomat Namzara Zaqaru with his children. Should any attendee seek for a potential partner amongst the Zaqaru family at the Zaqaru Ball, they will find more.

Of other important note is that Sinma Zaqaru, son of Duke Nabuna Zaqaru was expected to be on the attendee list, but for whatever reason, he's not present at the start of the Zaqaru Ball.

    Information

The above information regarding the relatives attending is limited information. To gain more, they may be approached on the Zaqaru Ball or other attendees may be approached.

When attending the Zaqaru Ball, please include the name of all attendees. For the attendees seeking a partner, please add either a picture or physical description, their age and at least one piece of public information, such as a personality trait, education, an achievement or a hobby.

Invited are all the noble families of the Imperium, from Duke to Earl. Those not invited are the factions with the Titleless trait. The focus of the Zaqaru Ball is on singles and their escort, so all those attending should have at least a single looking for a partner amongst their attendees.

All attendees of the Zaqaru Ball will be able to enjoy the full comfort of the luxurious arrangements in the vicinity of the Erit Palace, which are fully committed to take care of all the needs of the guests during their stay before and after the Zaqaru Ball.

Given their mother is of Zaqaru lineage, the special attention to the invite should come as no surprise. The Berger children are close in lineage and not expected to come as potential partners to the Zaqaru attendees, but rather as esteemed guests to use the opportunity and find a partner amongst the other noble guests.

    The Grand Conference of Hallow
The System of Kuldav is filled with ships as various nobles arrive to take their places at the grand conference, either as participants or observers, and transports are not the only thing in evidence as many nobles have brought their own security in addition to the fleets of House Laramy on guard against another Collective attack. Of course the influx of nobles is offset by the fact that most of the normal Imperial traffic to the capital is currently at a standstill until the Titanium Throne is once again filled, but even so there are a lot of ships flying to and from the planet.

The swirl of activity centers on the ancient Palace of Thorns. It isn't actually the fortress of Empress Hallow as that was destroyed four centuries ago in Fifth Interregnum Wars, but it was built on the same location, and has been used off and on by the Queens and Kings of the Hallow Sector whenever they weren't being superseded by the Imperial throne. Now it stands to serve that purpose once again. And the first service it will provide is in choosing the next monarch to reside in it.

There are many side halls that will no doubt see substantial use in the conference, but for the opening ceremonies only the throne room will serve. It is a grand space made of arched titanium buttresses and walls of holostone that feature the many deeds of its former occupants.

Hundreds of nobles crowd the observer galleries as the Great Houses of Hallow arrive to take their places on the main floor. They are announced one by one as they take their seats on the grand council with their advisers spreading out behind them.

"Duchess Izabella Vastadd" Young and in the prime of her life the Duchess enters followed only by her most trusted advisers, Lord Herot.

"Duke Ewout Mertens" The leader of house Mertens by contrast is ancient and withered. Nearing two centuries old only the most expensive rejuvenat technology keeps him alive, but his mind is as sharp as ever. Several medical assistants hover near his chair just in case.

"Duke Raudos Arnos" The duke is an imposing figure in his stark military uniform. Accompanying him are several admirals and an economic adviser as is the way of House Arnos.

"Duchess Brechtje Voss" The duchess is old, but not as old as Duke Mertens. Her hair is grey, but her body is still strong. Several of the dark cloaked members of the Shroud Cult follow behind her.

"Duke Torbin Gilkara" The Duke is a relatively unknown figure to the nobles with his common past, and the two white robed advisers he brings.

"Duke Ernst Berger" The duke does not look happy to be here. Renovating the Palace of Thorns was a significant expense, but more harm was done to his pride in being forced to back down from his play at conquest.

"Archduke Alexander Laramy" The archduke enters slowly with a stoic expression. A few courtiers follow him attentively but he is not making the show of strength some would expect to start off such a conference.

"Queen Persephone Laramy" There is a moment of silence as everyone looks to the archduke to see how he responds to this aggressive move, but he remains stoically seated. A beat later the nominal queen sweeps in regally. Rather than taking a seat on the council she bypasses the line of chairs and claims the Pale Throne for herself.

She takes a moment for the whispers to die down and then proclaims. "I thank you all for coming. Before the people and my ancestors I now proclaim that I, Persephone Laramy the Second, am the rightful Queen of Hallow and your lawful liege by right of blood and succession. This Grand Conference will have a new purpose. Not to verify my claims, but to reaffirm your oaths of loyalty and determine the new order of things in this sector."

    Code Domingo System (-4,3)

Glordek stepped out of the shuttle and onto the bare soil. It was rich in minerals and he could see some metals laying already bare. The advisors quietly waited. Lately Glordek had gone to extreme measures to get what he wanted. He didn't bother taking requests from the rest of the nation. Twice they had brought this new behavior before the council, but everyone was pleased. Glordek had succeeded in his task above all others of the family.

The advisors watched as Glordek plopped to the ground. He looked out over the vast landscape and the laugh started up again. It was unnerving and scratched at the eardrums. It also signaled that there would be no conversations with Glordek. The grand architect was designing, in a few years they might get a glimpse of what Glordek was seeing. They looked at each other with worry.

    Aboard the Fallacy

Torbin stood with his arms outstretched in a cross like fashion. The tailor moved the scanner out of the way and pushed it into the computer screen. "The perfect dimensions for you will be crafted. All of Filo is excited to see you at the Hallow Conference. It's your first real test as our diplomat, yes? You skillfully handled the Arnos family, but the Berger thing seemed a bit much I say. There's no telling what to expect out of this, but man, don't let us down. Alright, down south I go." The man winks at Torbin and takes more measurements.

    The Grand Conference at Hallow

Torbin is spinning, this was not what he was expecting. Two soft voices whisper in his ear, “You have served your term Torbin, Filo thanks you.” His heart drops a foot into his stomach and he sees his cousins all standing over him.

The vision breaks. The table moves down and over as Persophone slides into his view. The pang in his stomach causes a visible convulsion. The pain settles and Torbin breathes. The figures around the room all dart in his vision. He spots his advisors heading out the door.

“Congratulations your highness. I, Torbin Gilkara will swear fealty. This Empire has been under too much strife ever since the death of your Noble father, and the ever respected Archduke Sebastian Laramy and Crown Princess Katherine Laramy. So, with your blessing, House Gilkara will become a knight for you. We will lead the forces of Hallow to conquer the other houses and bring them all back under control.” Torbin stands and bows to Persophone. He adds,
“I was unaware that you had come to an agreement with your brother. House Gilkara will always follow their liege and looks forward to following the Titanium Throne’s commands.”
Torbin sits down calmly and relaxes in his chair.

    Zaqura Ball

Bolkas Gilkara strides into the ballroom. He wears a very decorative suit with a flowing cape dragging behind him. A few non nobel women are left outside the gate as he twirls his entrance. The two black bracelets on his wrist catch light and sparkle through his flourish. He runs a hand through his dark hair and beckons to a horrified looking girl, less than half his age.

The girl wears a very plain brown dress with a small pair of diamond earrings. They seem a pale comparison to the Zaquaran Jewelry that dots the Royal family. Bolkas lifts her and places her down next to himself in the center of the entrance hall. The girl whispers. “What are we doing?” To which Bolkas replies, “Waiting for our announcement darling.” The girl turns her head down.

Almost on que, two Filo advisors rush into the room, “Introducing Bolkas Gilkara, First of his title. And Miss Arandred, First of her name.” The two do a courtesy dance for the entrance. Though dressed plainly, Arnadred is a very beautiful person. Clearly a teenager from her wildly dyed hair that matches the color, as best as dyes can, of Grand diplomat Ninu Zaqaru. She performs her part of the dance with a nervous, but practiced poise. However, Bolkas uses a dramatic flair and flips, twirls, and even slides across the floor. The smile on his face is chiseled, yet disarming.

After their dance and a quick scorning from a pair of advisors, the two wander off to mingle. Arandred is watched at a distance by Bolkas’s advisors when they fail to keep up with the man.

A robotic hand reaches up and attaches a slightly discolored jaw. “House Starosta,” Anoa Gilkara’s voice rings through, recognizable even if her face is not. “I was very pleased to see you on the starfields protecting the lesser nobles. I personally owe your house. If I am ever in a position to repay it, I will cherish the moment.”

She detaches the jaw and reaches forward with a stumpy left arm. She looks at it and uses her robotic right arm to turn off the transmission.

    The Grand Conference of Hallow

The arrival of the queen maker was something awe inspiring. Their massive pleasure ship arrived in the very center of the Hallows, something many would believe near impossible a hundred years prior. Now a thousand men didn't march off that ship (though they could have) but 250 did. Many of them were Tatarus troops, wielding beautiful ostentatious uniforms. Their stunning designs perfect for these sorts of showy events. What was really shocking though was almost half were the rigid mercenaries of the house of Steel and their battle armor had none of the pomp and circumstance but in return screamed danger. Both of these sets of soldiers honorably received the new nobility. Their weapons raised above their heads allowed The once Admiral and high concubine to head down onto the surface. They were linked arm in arm and were now traipsing around like they owned the place. The high concubine seemed only to calm herself and show off all her grace when she arrived in the heart of the grand room which contained their new queen.

The Admiral and High Concubine strode in with matching ensembles of silver, it was incredibly dashing but of course he hated it, but she had insisted just this once... And their wedding, and a few parties afterward and then he could stay in uniform the rest of his life.

The Silver Duke and Duchess as that was the color they had chosen while also showing off their houses specific designs. It was flashy to the extreme and they claimed the wilderness of the nobles world and made a point of showing up all but the new Queen as best they could... They had tried to be a little less extravagant then her. If she had requested Tatarus ladies in waiting to ensure she looked her best of course they would have arrived with bells on.

Both would drop their heads low presenting themselves to her royal highness but they did not lower their eyes any longer to the other nobles. No now they were equals. Never again would the girls of Tatarus be mere whores warming royal bed chambers now, every night they spent with a lord or lady would be as equals, and the risks and rewards that came there in.

It was important they did not upend this great business and so when it was their time to swear their oath both would do it together, and once they were named duke and duchess with all relevent contract negotiations signed. They would ask their queens permission to marry officially. A mere formality but another show of respect and of course a way of letting their queen look good while also announcing this massive alliance.

Persephones House Laramy faction, House of Steel and House Tatarus, what could her dear brother do but capitulate? What could the Hallow do but bend the knee and name her queen? Lest their armies move through the lands of their allies among the Exiles and fall on them in waves of horror?

House Tatatus is named thus and so we expect your complete capitulation. The queen wishes to see peace in the Byvale sector and we intend to deliver it as such. You will swear oaths of loyalty to us and we in turn will make you rich and care for you as part of our noble family. Become my vassal and aid us in bringing on a new golden age."

We wanted your permission to setup a series of checkpoints around the gate for the earldom -2/-6. We want to avoid damage to trade but catching agents and contraband military equipment is something we have to now prioritize. We cant afford them arming rebels or causing problems for Byvale now that we're sending resources into Hallow territory. If you agree we will provide your nation with exemption stickers that will allow all your non military vessals to cross unmolested so we dont do any harm to your business."

“Welcome all viewers from all across the Imperium! I am”

    Earl Samsu Charcho

“your distinguished noble reporter of the Zaqaru Commentary Service, the ZCS, live on the”

    Grand Conference of Hallow!

A plumb older man with a broad smile in some of the finest teal wear decorated in golden trim is reporting amidst an observer niche in the Grand Conference of Hallow. Being recorded by several dragonfly drones made of emerald, his recording is broadcast live throughout the Imperium, to nobles and the people alike, in several media forms, from audio to hologram.

“It is here that the fate of the Sector for the years to come will be sealed. In recent years, we have seen how the despicable Democratic Collective has been beaten back by valiant noble warriors from the very core of the Imperium and now the nobles of Hallow have gathered to once and for all decide who will inherit the Pale Throne, the seat of the King or Queen of the Hallow Sector.”

“Also referred to as the Imperial Sector, as our late Emperor Maximilian Laramy held the Titanium Throne from the center of the Imperium. Unfortunately his most promising eldest children died in tragic incidents, leaving his least competent children to squabble over the inheritance, Archduke Alexander Laramy and Crown Princess Persephone Laramy. But even they are denied the Titanium Throne, seat of the Emperor, as it does not acknowledge either as a worthy successor.”

“So for two decades they have sought to gain the upper hand over the Laramy territory to proclaim themself King Alexander Laramy or Queen Persephone Laramy, instead of trying to prove a worthy successor to the Titanium Throne, by setting out to fulfill the test of worthiness as overseen by the Imperial College of Sciences.”

“As we are present here, it should be obvious neither have succeeded so far, so let me tell you what this is all about. I’m here on the Grand Conference of Hallow, organized by the wise Duke Ernst Berger, to gather all the nobles of Hallow and decide whether Archduke Alexander Laramy or Crown Princess Persephone Laramy should inherit the Pale Throne.”

“Now let’s take a look at the Hallow Sector!”

Besides Earl Samsu Charcho, an image display a current map of the Hallow Sector, indicating which systems are held by which House.

“So that’s a grand total of 7 Houses within the Hallow Sector! And a regrettable criminal element holding sway too, let’s hope we won’t encounter them here. The six Houses besides House Laramy all have a Duke title, though not all have a Duke title within the Hallow Sector itself.”

“So which ones are Dukes within the Hallow Sector? There is Ernst Berger, Duke of Raymill, the wise noble who organized the Grand Conference, in the right part of the sector. The venerable Ewout Mertens, Duke of Violetsage, renowed for his market connections and old age, in the left part of the sector. Torbin Gilkara, Duke of Vertmist, is a relative newcomer to the scene, as his family regained the Duke title a decade ago, at the topleft of the sector. That is a total of three Dukes, besides ofcourse the Laramies themselves.”

“So what about those who hold their title outside the Hallow Sector?”

The image next to Earl Samsu Charcho expands beyond the borders of the Imperial Sector.

“There is House Vastadd, where Izabella Vastadd, Duchess of Pinebridge within the Whitewynne sector beyond the lower border of Hallow, also controls the Pryhollow Duchy in the Hallow Sector, composed of 5 systems. House Voss, led by Brechtje Voss, Duchess of Dahsiu within the Akkadu Sector, controls the Eastsage Duchy, composed of three systems, in the lower right corner of the Hallow Sector.”

“Last of the noble Houses is House Arnos, who controls two systems out of three in the Waterton Duchy in the topleft corner of the Hallow Sector, while Raudos Arnos, Duke of Aelhaven, makes his home in the Canzanelli Sector and also controls systems in the Dorvale Sector. Finally the criminal element I touched upon earlier, the Exiles’ Consortium, who controls Silvermallow in the topleft of the Sector. Run by the criminal overlord the Outcast, they hold their influence in the former capital of House Xincliar within the Shadowfox Duchy and also extend their influence in the Byvale Sector.”

“These Houses, these Dukes and Duchesses, will determine the future of the Hallow Sector. Also of note is that both Archduke Alexander Laramy Archduke and Crown Princess Persephone Laramy enjoy support from the Liness Sector, in the forms of House Jinks and House Kelse respectively.”

There is a short break in the speech. While Earl Samsu Charcho reaches out for a drink, the cameras zoom towards the Dukes and Duchesses arriving. Hovering over the gathered Dukes, they settle on Archduke Alexander Laramy and record how the announcement declares Queen Persephone Laramy instead of Crown Princess Laramy. Her entrance and the stoic expression of Archduke Alexander Laramy, as well as the shocked expression of nearby observer nobles are witnessed by the Dragonfly drones.

“Dear watchers, you just heard it too, Crown Princess Persephone Laramy has just declared herself Queen and her brother remains seated! Has the rivalry between siblings ended? What is going on here? We’re here to find out!”

Meanwhile, the view moves on to Duke Torbin Gilkara who is the first to respond.

“Crown Princess Persephone Laramy, who has just proclaimed herself Queen, an overeager act as naturally there must be a coronation first, has demanded the Grand Conference will not be to determine who will inherit the title, but to reaffirm the oaths of loyalty! And already one is responding!”

The words of Duke Torbin Gilkara are repeated, one Dragonfly drone zooming in on the Duke sitting relaxed in his chair.

“Duke Torbin Gilkara has come forward! He speaks of being a knight to Crown Princess Persephone Laramy! Of conquering the other Houses to bring them under control! Such aggressive language is not unheard of from Duke Torbin Gilkara, as the unjust declaration of war from House Gilkara and House Greenflame made House Berger back off in a war to take a system from House Laramy. Which in turn led to this Grand Conference, so he is certainly using the opportunity.”

“Though I am curious why he refers to Archduke Sebastian Laramy, as Crown Princess Persephone’s father is Emperor Maximilian Laramy. Nor does he refer to the Pale Throne, the Throne of Hallow, but the Titanium Throne, the Imperial Throne. Are these mistakes or intentional? We’ll soon see!”

Meanwhile, a Dragonfly drone has caught sight of the arrival of the Admiral from the House of Steel and the High Concubine from Tatarus in their silver dress.

“Yes, dear watchers, you’re seeing this correctly. The two commoners, the Admiral of the House of Steel and the concubine of Tatarus have arrived at the Grand Conference of Hallow. Not invited by Duke Ernst Berger, but at the behest of Crown Princess Persephone Laramy. She has promised to the warmonger of the House of Steel and the manipulator of Tatarus noble titles in exchange for their vassalage. A cunning plan by the concubine of Tatarus to elevate her status, while the House of Steel brought devastation amongst nobles in the Byvale Sector.”

“So far, it seems to have intimidated Archduke Alexander Laramy enough to not directly respond to her declaration, perhaps as he waits to see how the other Dukes and Duchess with influence in the Hallow Sector react. Something that is on all our minds, perhaps especially for Duke Raudos Arnos, Duchess Brechtje Voss and Duchess Izabella Vastadd, as they all hold their capitals outside the Hallow Sector.”

“It remains an important question for Duke Ernst Berger and Duke Ewout Mertens, for will they associate with a liege who is willing to grant noble titles to commoners who were not granted such titles by the former Emperor Maximilian Laramy and commoners who brought war against nobles? Will Duke Ernst Berger, organizer of the Grand Conference, accept the insulting behaviour of the commoners? Will Archduke Alexander Laramy stand idle or act as the two commoners disrespect protocol and do not even acknowledge their superiors, in addition to their other flagrant violations of noble standards, letting his sister take what he desires? Let’s watch and see!”

The Dragonfly drones zoom to catch sight of what is to happen.

Meanwile, sitting besides Duke Ernst Berger is his wife:

    Enigma 6

Sergi Saquar watched the opening moments of the Hallow Conference with sterness bordering contempt. His suit matches the Samarkite style, which has shifted away from the robe-like suits and trended towards a tighter fit with a shoulder cowl. While the wine bottle green of the Saquar family is the primary colour swatch, a distinct armband of the black and gold draws the eye. Seated with him are three political advisors, each decorated in the colors of the three Greenflame clusters.

"I should not be here Doro, I am a scientist, not a fop"
Doro Severin, a powerful noble in his own right, rolled his eyes at the sixth repetition of the complaint.
"You are a Saquar my lord, Farid cannot be the only one in the family with a tongue, project Urza will manage without your constant oversight."
Sergi sighed, turning back to speak to the advisors directly.
"Only by marriage, had I known… ahhh nevermind you are right. What does the general public seem to think of the entrances so far?"

Doro crossed his arms and slid his tablet over, the smiling face of Earl Chamcho beaming up from the screen.
"-unjust declaration of war from house gilkara and house greenflame made House Berger back off-" Sergi waved away the broadcast, face stormy.

"If we had not declared that war and forced back Berger then they would have split the sector defenses and seen Sigma Kuldav in the hands of the Collective, did those damnable fools not see the Peoples Navy? See the Revolution?"

Doro put a hand on his friends shoulder, "We knew there would be backlash my lord, we have people working on cooling relations. You must simply watch for now and show our presence."

Sergi nodded, smiling forcefully as a dragonfly camera buzzed by, and standing to clap as House Vastadd was announced. The conference was almost beginning. A few more nobles filtering in, and last second conversations filling the hall.

Persephone's announcement filled the room with silence, no less so from the Greenflame box. Sergi held his expression neutral, though his advisors behind could see his fists clench tightly. Doro prayed for sanity in the coming moments, and felt the tension rise as The Tatarus and Gilkara declarations landed.

I understand your concerns about Tartarus and the House Of Steel Earl Namzara, but frankly the borders of the Byvale Sector are not my concern while the imperium remains so idle of the threat from the Collective, the Laramies are playing their threat like an idle power game and it is only through the self humiliation of our declaration against house Berger and the miracle of the Laramy Siblings cooperating that we still have an Imperial Capitol. We need the House of Steele in the Imperial power structure more than ever, and Tartarus has always been good to my house.

No I do not support the power play that they are making, but by the throne I support the security it will bring the imperium. If you are so against them then I ask why? Surely it is not simply the legacy of their name? There is more to a noble title than the mating habits of our forefathers. And I suppose the obvious follow up, what would you intend to do about it?

The tapping on the floor, the strides, the gowns swinging in the dance. Upbeat melody, smooth tones and music to dance to. The Zaqaru Ball, filled with guests, music and dancers is colourful and diverse. Duke Nabuna Zaqaru welcomes arrivals as they enter, including Bolkas Gilkara and Arandred Gilkara. As they move on to leave an impression with their dance, it is obvious many dancers appreciate Bolkas’ moves on the dance floor.

    Illith Zaqaru

At the Main Ballroom, there is an avid dancer amongst them all. Ilith Zaqaru, daughter to Duke Nabuna Zaqaru, is well versed in all kinds of dances from across the Imperium. Dancing in the finest of jewelry and a dress interwoven with sparkling ruby to match her crimson hair, her features have much in common with her mother. Dancing with all kinds of suitors and dancers, moving from one to the other, she tirelessly moves over the dancefloor. Spinning, gracefully arcing, following the beat.

There’s no smile to her face, but a confident and serious expression. She outdances several suitors and shows a fine expertise in the dance, outclassing other dancers with practised ease. Grace and elegance describe her well, though there is a certain lack of passion, seduction, as between the dances, there is even a look leaning towards boredom before she settles in a certain patient manner, moving on to dance with vigor.

    Aburnar Zaqaru

The grandson of Nocri Zaqaru, son of Sili Zaqaru who participated in the Sashaw Race, a twenty year old man going by the name of Aburnar is known to have followed a scientific education. He looks over the dancefloor carefully, studying those around him cautiously. Known to be frugal, this has not preventing him from attending the ball in an ornate blue and yellow gown with expensive apatite gemstones to match the blue of his gown set in similarly expensive golden armbands.

Aburnar Zaqaru moves over to Arandred Gilkara and politely bows. He offers a formal smile, his eyes for a moment going over her rainbow coloured hair with mirth visible in his eyes. “Arandred Gilkara, I am Aburnar Zaqaru. May I have this dance of you?” He asks as the music starts to play the next song to dance on in one of the side ballrooms.

    Dear Duke Farid Saquar Greenflame,

Thank you for your response. It pleases me that you do not support the power play they are making and you have given my insight on your stance towards them.

However, I do not share your opinion that they will bring security. The actions of the House of Steel have already proven otherwise, for they have waged war on those superior to them with title. When they are vassals, it is but a matter of waiting before they do the same on their liege, seeking only power.

They do not care about security, for otherwise they could have made a bid for their worth of a noble title in battle against the Collective. Instead, their action shows they will be more than willing to spark the chaos of rebellion. They have abandoned their ways of the mercenary and I fear welcoming them in the Imperial power structure is inviting traitors, especially given the manipulation of Tatarus at their side.

Regarding your question about what I intend to do about it, I have tried and failed to persuade the Laramy siblings to refrain from dealing with such unreliable parties. I have warned the other nobility of the Hallow Sector. Currently I am deliberating what to do next, especially given the bold actions at the Grand Conference of Hallow.

Duke Farid Saquar, your words do have me wondering. On one hand you speak of security to the Imperium, belabor the idleness of the Imperium against the threat of the Collective, show willingness to declare war for the defense of the Crown Lands, claim being a reason we still have an Imperial Capitol. On the other hand I have seen no willingness of House Greenflame to actually declare war against the very threat that endangers all these concerns, the Democratic Collective, despite your immediate border and the overwhelming might of the powerful Haythem Fleet.

So with all due respect I politely ask you to indulge me in my deliberations and answer the insistent question I have on my mind. As leader of House Greenflame, what truly concerns you?

    Yours sincerely,
    Diplomat Namzara Zaqaru

    The Grand Conference at Hallow

Torbin watches as the High Concubine and the Admiral parade themselves through the hall. The soldiers are a blight on the conference even in their extravagant attire. Torbin turns to whoever is on his left and mumbles, “All this could have been done through messages.”

The whole affair reeks of nobility and pompous monarchy. His face holds still as he looks around the room. What an idiot you are Torbin. You should have let Berger make his move. That would have stopped this. You let Anoa goad you into aligning with Greenflame and what came of it. Tssk tssk. Now look at those two. Playing nice to their queen. That’s a whole treaty of fangs and claws.

    Zaqura Ball

Arnadred can feel her face blush and her vision drops to Aburnar’s feet when she hears his words. “I’m not technically Gilkara.” Less than a second later her body subtly changes. The blush in her face fades to its normal color and her neck tightens to pull her face up towards Aburnar’s; hormones release and pheromones change to be a better partner for Aburnar.

A giggle escapes her laugh and she turns her head sideways with a wicked grin. “That sounds lovely Aburnar.” Arnadred curtsies and places her hand delicately on Aburnar’s shoulder and waits for him to lead. “Your house has thrown an exquisite ball. Tell me, Aburnar, is it true that your Duke met his wife at the last ball thrown?”

Bolkas spies his prize and makes his move. With grace and dignity he glides through the crowd and bows politely and extends his left hand forward. “Earl Ayallal Attar, it is my privilege to make your acquaintance. I am Bolkas Gilkara, may I have this dance you sly devil.” There is flattery in the stance and the smile on Bolkas’s face.

It appears that she thought herself unbeatable even against the master tacticians of the House Steel, a shame for sure. Our Anoa Gilkara will be with resolve again in due time.” Her gaze lingers offscreen for a moment.

“As for your question into our Torbin Gilkara, he is indisposed on every tv screen in the Empire currently. We can only guess into his mind. First and foremost, do not try to interpret his actions, much less try to decide his mind. He has been adjusted to rule as best as he can without many of the problems that plague our species. We do know that he values the House of Steel’s military might and their tactical genius. We also know that he deplores their attempts to back any noble house and strongarm their way into a title.”

The woman adjusts herself and shakes her head. “I apologize that we have no easy answer here. It is part of our duty to assist him and anticipate his actions and thoughts, yet we continually lack in this endeavor. We believe that at best he would hold House Steel in contempt. Their engagement on the Triune pact and their marriage to Tartarus lead us to believe that they are lacking in tact and guile. This marriage will likely be the end of House Steel.”

The lady stands and closes, “If you have anything more that you wish to discuss, please reach out to me. I am the Undying Philosopher, Third of my Title."

Prime Negotiator Alberin, of the Xincalir Financial Management Group, attends the conference. While he is dressed quite nicely, he certainly did not try to make a flashy entrance, like much of the nobility. Alberin is dressed in very respectable formal business attire: a high thread-count gray suit with an elaborately designed tie bound by a trinity knot. A sturdy, large black coat rests unbuttoned upon his shoulders. Behind him are a number of business lackeys, discussing the ongoing events in near mute whispers. Alberin remains still, impassively watching the proceedings.

The location of his seat, however, is somewhat unusual. While the Consortium owns multiple systems in the sector, they are not nobility. So, the Exiles' have been granted the status of an elevated observer.

Aburnar Zaqaru at the Zaqaru Ball offers a polite bow to Arnadred before starting the dance, taking the lead. He moves gently, the song being played a smooth and soft number, inviting to a slow moving dance, which seems exactly to Aburnar’s liking as he moves with a relaxed and eased pace, focusing on his dancing partner. The change in his partner has not left his notice, his keen eyes carefully observing the change. Yet, he makes no mention of the change, instead focusing on her question.

“Thank you, the Zaqaru Ball is the greatest of Balls our family offers, so it’s good to know it’s appreciated. It is certainly true granduncle Nabuna has met Saundri Arnos at the last Zaqaru Ball, here in this very Palace.” Taking Arnadred for a slow spin, he asks afterwards: “So by which full name my I call you?”

Meanwhile, Bolkas Gilkara has set his eyes on another person. An old lady with plenty of wrinkles at the age of 79, Grand Agent Earl Ayallal Attar. Dressed in a dark dress, for which it is difficult to determine whether it is black or a very deep blue at first glance, but made out of the finest fabrics. She has dark jewelry and she stood in an unassuming spot, hidden by the crowd and shadows, watching in the direction of the ballroom where the young attendees are practising a new dance.

When Bolkas Gilkara addressed her, a wary eyebrow rose, but it soon broke as she smiled seductively, pleased by his flattery. “Certainly, Bolkas Gilkara. Which ballroom has your preference?” She nudges to the halls leading to smaller ballrooms which serve non-classical music. Moving closer to him, she wraps her arm in his. “Lead the way, my dear.” She says, adding an inviting wink.

    Dear Undying Philosopher the Third,

With complete understanding I acknowledge you can only give a guess into the mind of Duke Torbin Gilkara. Perhaps I should have rephrased the question to ask for the opinion of House Gilkara. In any case, your answer suffices, for it has become clear to me that a conflicting attitude arises from conflicting interests.

It pleases me to know Duke Torbin Gilkara deplores the attempt of the House of Steel to strongarm their way into a title. Though as you mention the actions of Duke Torbin Gilkara should not be attempted to be interpreted, I feel your plight in the task set forward. Anticipating such actions and deal with the consequences will take much of your time.

I agree with your assessment of the House of Steel. Considering Anoa Gilkara faced them in battle, there is a question I have for her, though I understand if this is information she does not wishes to divulge. I hope you will relay this question in a suitable manner, for I understand her position and wish her new opportunities to obtain glory in the heat of battle. With what strength of numbers and technological advance did the House of Steel strike in combat?

    Zaqura Ball

    Spoiler: Bolkas and Arnadred
    Show
Bolkas is the well known Searcher of Secrets for House Gilkara. He is prone to indulgence in all manners. He has an insatiable appetite for any and all things. There have been a few instances caught on public broadcasts where Bolkas was clearly in an altered state. He also disappears for stretches of time. He has a few illegitimate children that he claims, there are speculations as to how many non claimed are in existence.

None of this seems to matter when someone meets Bolkas. He is suave, charming, and likable. Though not traditionally handsome and carrying a little extra weight from his constant overeating, Bolkas gets to people subconsciously. That damnable smile leaves only friends in its wake.

Despite his reckless behavior, Bolkas claims quiet success in the ventures he undertakes.

A bit of information was granted in Arnadred’s announcement to the ball. Her bio addresses her as the purest descendant from before the loss of Title. She has been raised in very special care by the government since the age of two. She is fluent in many languages, including sign language which she has practised since before she could talk.

Her life is split between months of study directly under one of the Five Gilkara leaders and a few weeks of freedom that she often uses to indulge in reckless abandon. This event happens to fall in one of those free weeks.

Arnadred has helped in the construction sites for advanced fleet ports and units and advanced scientific institutions and research groups. In the past three years, Arnadred has taken more control over her own life. The council seems pleased with her choices.

Arnadred dances along to the slow music, closing her eyes and smiling gently as Aburnar speaks about the previous ball and his granduncle.

“Oh, no. It is Gilkara.” Arnadred missteps when Aburnar asks for her name. She stumbles slightly and grabs onto Aburnar for support. “I… Gilkara is a name given to the rulers of Filo. It will be my name too. Perhaps sooner rather than later with all the things going on at the Hallow conference.” She rights herself and resumes her position.

“What would you do if the crown princess became queen?” she keeps a polite three inches between them. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be thinking of that.” Her eyes linger on Aburnar’s golden armbands as she waits for his response.

Bolkas takes Ayallal’s arm firmly and leads towards the smaller ballrooms. He listens carefully and looks for the right atmosphere. He finds a suitable arrangement. The half speed dance is a pleasant start, but danced in doubletime can show one’s practiced technique. Bolkas dances flirtatiously with Ayallal for a few moments before whispering, “Do you mind mixing business with pleasure? If so, I'll just focus on pleasure.” He pulls the older woman close to speak indiscreetly. "I have an idea for something that will be extravagant and close lipped."

Anoa's voice carries on the message: "Their fleet was expansive. They numbered sixteen capital ships with exquisite star fighters. They were supported also by agents of a subtle type. We hope that next time there will be more support from someone who denounces the titless factions with such disdain.

Aburnar Zaqaru and Arnadred move at their relaxed pace across the ballroom floor, the music swaying them on to lead them along another familiar round, making the same moves, easy and comfortable. Aburnar offers graceful support when she stumbled slightly.

“You do have me wondering by which full address to call you, if it is not yet Arnadred Gilkara. Or should I simply stick with Fair Maiden Arnadred?” He offers a warm smile. “There is no need to apologise regarding your concerns about succession in the Imperial Sector. I can certainly understand why it is on your mind. For me, whether Crown Princess Persephone becomes Queen or doesn’t, I lead a team analyzing, formulating theories and coming up with new research questions for the field currently of attention to the court I am in.”

“What field is of attention will depend far greater on whether I am at a court in Zaqaru or perhaps a court beyond these borders.” There’s a subtle move, half of an inch moved closer, a graceful shift to offer greater comfort, a warm expression.

Belkas Gilkara and Ayallal Atar dance in one of the smaller ballrooms, the tempo shifting. Ayallal Attar is able to keep up with practised ease, but Bolkas will find that it is experience carrying her over strength or vigour. Ayallal is far from averse to Bolkas’ flirts, eagerly trading them, both playful and serious. An alluring whisper: “Pleasure, talk Business.” With joy in her eyes, she keeps close, their dance becoming more intimate and discreet.

    Dear Anoa Gilkara,

Thank you for the information, it is greatly appreciated. The fighters matches my records, as House of Steel possesses 15 shipments of Orca Bombers and 15 units of Hexshot Superiority Fighters. I had expected a greater fleet and more equipment, given their own research and industrial capacity, however. They may have used it to create the agent capacity you encountered, as I have no records of previous agents in the House of Steel. If the agents were in great enough number, this may otherwise be indication of support of another party. Which of these two scenarios do you think more likely?

I will offer you a piece of unsolicited advice, however, as you for the second time throw words at me in a tone of dislike. When you go to war, even in defense of another against commoners, make a formal war declaration. This may rally those with strong voices to the cause, which would otherwise have been thought hopeless.

    Yours sincerely,
    Diplomat Namzara Zaqaru

Arnadred pushes Aburnar playfully when he calls her “Fair Maiden Arnadred”. “You flatterer, you’re worse than Bolkas.” She giggles and then frowns thinking of how bad Bolkas is. “Arnadred Gilkara is just such a proper name, it feels weird.” A smile lingers on her face.

She listens intently as Aburnar discusses the Crown Princess and his analysis team. She barely lets him finish before excitement takes hold and she begins to talk. “I love research! Building top of the line equipment is great, but designing things is so much better. Solving problems in ways no one thought of is amazing. It’s a purpose.” She bites her lip and grins before flashing a smile towards Aburnar.

“You will have to come to Filo sometime to see our courts in work.” Arnadred is caught up in her excitement and doesn’t respond to Aburnar’s gentle encroachment. “Are you allowed to discuss what you were working on?” Her eyes flicker to another ballroom and she raises an eyebrow towards it.

Bolkas dances with Ayallal for a song before continuing any proper discussion. He puts his arm around her waist and leads towards an area with more exotic dances. He stops and twirls to pull Ayallal in close to the wall in a corridor. “I need agents. It’s dangerous and the reward is worth more than anything that could ever be traded.” He spins again to grab Ayallal and continues leading towards the other ballroom. He keeps very close and his eyes turn to scan the room for his advisors. The white robes are easy to spot, but they seem more interested in something else going on in the main Ballroom.

Anoa sits in a dilapidated husk of a ship. The damage from fighters and bombers clearly smashed this area during some battle. “If my words are harsh, it is because of the frustration I feel towards myself. I see all the ways that the battle could have turned out differently. This”, She lifts both of her robotic arms to emphasize the ship around her, “is the reality. Please take no offense. Your words are welcome and will be heeded in the future. Perhaps sooner than I would like.”

She rubs her jaw that is now permanently attached. “Thank you for sharing your intelligence. I don’t believe that we encountered Steel Agents. My files report that others were set up as support. There are a few that would be able to do such things, one is an obvious choice.”

Aburnar Zaqaru smirks as he feels the hand of Arnadred giving him a playful push. His face warms as she giggles and he leads them along with fine grace along a curve in the dance as she smiles. Seeing her excitement as he tells of his own business, his eyes set on her with renewed interest and the grin she offers makes his eyes twinkle.

“I would love to come to Filo to see your court, as well as your work. I am curious to see your designs to aid scientists in their work.” Raising a curious eyebrow, he looks at her with a certain delight, caught up by her excitement. There’s a moment’s pause before he moves along with smooth flowing steps in the dance. “As for my own work, I have observed and studied the Sarahu Nebula, analyzed the gravitational forces in Natho’s asteroid belt, incidentally finding the more optimal resource deposits to be mined, simplified several mathematical equations and identified key statistics along several trade routes, which Zaqaru fleets have used to find several pirate outposts and dismantle them.”

“So tell me, bright and charming Arna, what is it you would like to design next?” Aburnar’s face has a mischievous smile, observing her reaction to the shortened nickname, given she thought her full name so proper.

“Oh my.” Ayallal Attar feigns indignity as Bolkas Gilkara leads her to the wall in the corridor, smiling at him with clear pleasure in her smile. Leaning her body in closer as he speaks, she lets her fingers dance along his arm. Taken for a spin, the two move on the next ballroom, Ayallal Attar giving Bolkas Gilkara alluring winks.

As Bolkas scans the room, she places a hand on his face and drews it to her, stepping backward into one of the smaller, darker ballrooms, with a droning beat, a wild vertigo of music sweeping them in the heat of a mass of dancing people going crazy to the song. “Seduce me more with your business talk, your dance, Bolkas!” Ayallal Attar shouts as she presses herself against him in the strong rhythm of the music.

    The Zaqaru Ball
Duke Menard Lacross arrives at the ball with a few attendants. The duke is middle aged at 54 and already a widower, his first wife having died in a pirate attack. So although eligible, and a good catch as such things go, Menard isn't really looking for a spouse. He is here to foster closer ties with the Zaqaru.

Duchess Litte Zaqaru returns to Zaqaru space with her two children, Klaya Berger and Jorgen Berger. They are young still at ten and five years of age respectively. So House Berger isn't looking for a betrothal for them. But it would be good for them to meet their cousins and give Litte Zaqaru a chance to see her family again.

From House Voss is the Lady Liese Voss, the daughter of the duchess and the heir to the duchy. She is a tall and slender figure in her fashionable silver dress, and is in fact looking for a partner. If perhaps not with Zaqaru specifically, then with the nobles of some other House.

There are many other nobles as well from all across the Imperium coming to meet each other and cement the ties between each other. But most are from the periphery of their Houses. Cousins of the second or third degree rather than direct family.

    The Grand Conference of Hallow
Queen Persephone graciously smiles at Duke Gilkara, Duke Mallach, and Duchess Miras, "I acknowledge your oaths and in turn pledge to defend your space and people as if they were my own."

She turns back to the assembled nobility, "Now do any of the rest of you wish to pledge fealty." There is a moment of silence, "Well I expected as much. What House wouldn't want to test the waters first. That is what this conference is for after all. Let us adjourn for now. I am sure all of you wish to meet with your advisors and discuss these new revelations. Tomorrow we can reconvene and begin negotiating the new treaties of vassalage."

"It's not just aid to scientists, even the military was able to follow the procedures to produce better ships. Though it wasn't soon enough for Anoa." Arnadred leans in and places her head on Aburnar during the pause. She picks her head and pace back up and shyly avoids his gaze until he begins explaining his work. She listens intently as he speaks.

Arnadred puts on a face of disbelief at Aburnar's tease. "Perhaps this Arna you seem so infatuated with should design a monument to Aburnar the Dismantler, for keeping us safe from dreadful pirates." A devilish smile flashes a taunt at Aburnar. Then a shift happens in Arnadred's demeanor. Her cheeks flush; her eyes grow wide with realization. An innocent smile of disbelief forms on her face.

It's only a moment before Arnadred's smile and demeanor shift back into a cool seduction. She lifts her neck towards Aburnar and asks, "How soon would you be able to travel?"

“Duke Menard Lacross, would you care for a drink?” Eskhit Zaqaru makes a deep courtsy before the Duke. At the wise age of 62, she is dressed in a dark gown, draped with a wide diamond necklace, rings, bracelets and earrings with diamonds and a headdress with tiny diamonds set in it.

“Pleased to meet you, I am Eshkit Zaqaru.” She raises her hand to the Duke, subtly nudging to a nearby bar. “I had hoped you would come to the Zaqaru Ball. I have been given to understand you have served as man of science and I would love to have an intelligent talk with an intellectual such as yourself.”

“What would you like to drink?”

Duchess Litte Zaqaru has a fantastic time with her family, chatting up with many of her family. Many relatives are interested in her children, trying to make them feel at home. When the interest dies down a bit, they are on the dancefloor for the children as is customary for all Zaqaru children in attendance. There, they meet a lot of others, from both the Zaqaru family as well as other noble families.

At one point, Klaya and Jorgen Berger can be seen running through some hallways together with their closest female cousins around their age, Nannu at 12 years, Lila at 11 years, Lisil at 9 years and Artere at 6 years old. Soon enough they are with friendly gestures directed back to their mother who is talking with her cousin Irsim, where they spend some time playing with her 2 year old son Eshal, brother of Lisil.

As Aburnar Zaqaru dances with Arnadred Gilkara, a few Zaqaru men are paying close attention to each other, other noble men and especially Lady Liese Voss. Eventually, one of them sees a fantastic opportunity as she walks down stairs and the music begins at the main ballroom. Stepping forward, Sangezi Zaqaru is a 23 year old man, walking with disciplined pace and bowing formally. “Welcome Lady Liese Voss, I am Sangezi Zaqaru. I kindly ask you to bestow upon me the honour to dance.” He is dressed in a rich green robe with golden trim and decorative patterns, with matching golden bracelets set with green alexandrite gemstones.

Aburnar feels Arnadred’s head lean in and he gently provides his body to lean on. While she avoids his gaze, his radiant smile should not go unnoticed to her.

Laughing at Arnadred’s comment of Arna designing a monument for him, it is one filled with joy and humor. When he sees her shift, her blush, her innocent smile, something seems to strike him, his breath taken as he is admiring his partner in dance. When she makes use of the moment to move from a smile to seductive attitude, Aburnar seems to slow down even more in the dance.

He listens intently as he hears her question. Leaning in to whisper in her ear, his answer is short, though trembles with a form of excitement. “Now.”

As Bolkas and Ayallal dance, the rhythm sweeping them up, Ayallal dances with passion, grinning at his flirts. When he whispers all kinds of despicable things in her ears, she leans into him, leaving her head hanging behind, followed by a cackling laugh, which seems to be her normal laugh.

When Bolkas shows up the drink, she moves close to him as she says: “Not while you incredible fiend discuss Business.” Nibbling on his ear, she whispers.

“So indeed, who would, could, contest her? Perhaps someone of Imperial Blood with enough support...” Diplomat Namzara Zaqaru shakes his head. “Apologies, I should not reminisce such thoughts aloud.” Looking at the Starosta envoy, he leans forward. “However, I fear the House of Steel and Tatarus will want more, ever more. I hope the above proposal for a Defensive Pact shows sufficient support on our side. I will know it pleases you when I receive it back signed by you.

Should you know any nobles who would join the Defensive Pact, please approach them. In turn, I would like to know whether you would be amenable to accept additional pact members. There is another noble in a similar position as yours which I would see us to stand together with.

    Yours sincerely,

    Dear Duke Ewout Mertens,

I humbly ask you for a moment of your precious time. There is a matter that has been plaguing my mind and I have been unable to resolve it, even when discussing it with others here in Zaqaru. It is my profound hope you, with your long experience and wisdom may perhaps be able to offer me insight that would put my mind at ease, or allow me to act.

As you know, five years ago both siblings of House Laramy declared war on the Democratic Collective of the People. Archduke Alexander Laramy gained the support of House Jinks and Crown Princess Persephone Laramy gained the support of the Duchy of Lyrae in this war, with the goal to conquer more systems from the Collective than the other siblings.

Looking at the present, we have all seen the military power of the Democratic Collective of People has expanded greatly since the death of the Emperor, as they used a large fleet to assault the war claim they announced, the Imperial Capital. To the surprise of many, including myself as well as the Collective’s admirals, Crown Princess Persephone Laramy and later on, Archduke Alexander Laramy, come to the aid of the Imperial Capital’s forces.

Where, given their own war declarations, one would expect them to at least try to conquer some systems from the Collective to show their own superiority compared to their sibling, there is no public record of either even assaulting one. Nor is there for either their support, as there is no public report of military activity available with regards to House Jinks and the Duchy of Lyrae.

While I certainly could ask the involved parties, and I very well might, I thought it best to first order my own thoughts and gain a neutral perspective on this matter. Given your vast wisdom and experience you posses with the ages of your rule, I am curious what your opinion on the events is and I hope you will honour me by sharing it with me.

    Yours sincerely,
    Diplomat Namzara Zaqaru

    Hallow Grand Conference
Torbin turns and looks around the room before speaking to Earl Charcho. "It's a lovely area. I haven't been here often, and House Berger did an outstanding job getting it tip top shape for us to convene here."

Torbin gestures towards the other Dukes, "I am glad to see all of the Hallow Dukes here. I haven't been able to meet with many of them and know them only by reputation. It's busy in this sector and we don't get a lot of free time." Torbin chuckles at his own joke.

"Overall it's an exciting affair. The Crown Princess Persephone certainly made a dazzling implication. I'm excited to see the other Dukes' ideas about the power grab. If Arnos, Voss, and Vastadd were not allowed to come, there would be much less threat against her claim by a combined force, but giving those three the opportunity to throw in their weight could have some consequences. It is exciting."

    Thoral, Last Year
Arnadred took off her helmet and wept. She looked over to Torbin whose helmet remained on. The advisor turned off her machine and gave her a hug. "You did really well." The advisor whispered her approval to the girl.

"How long does he do this for?" Shadowing the other Gilkara rulers had difficulties, and she had lasted only thirty minutes in this machine. It twisted and warped reality and injected memories of others into her head.

The advisor pulled back a little to look Arnadred in the eyes and answered, "We try to limit him to eight hours a day. Sometimes it isn't possible. But be assured that we monitor his mental health."

A little while later, Torbin was eating across from Arnadred. He smiled as he chewed his food. "What troubles you Arnadred? You've hardly touched your food? They didn't let you watch Anoa's report did they?" His voice toned disapproval.

Arnadred pushed the food around on her plate. "How can you eat? How can you pretend you didn't just live through that? All those people acting and you can't help them. I tried to talk to them, scream at them, but nothing I wanted to happen mattered. It kept going." She had recovered some, but the experience was still troubling her. "They kept going."

"It's quite disturbing. Don't let that go away, that screaming urge to help others. That's all that makes you human." Torbin continued to eat. "What else?"

The words flowed out of Arnadred's mouth unconsciously, "How do I know that I am making the right choice." It had been eating at her since the training. "You make it look so natural, but there's so many choices."

Torbin put his utensils down and wiped his mouth. He leaned forward and used his fingers to push Arnadred's hair behind her ear. "There are waves that you can swim with, and waves that you must swim against. If you understand the direction of the object of your desire, that directs your movements. But you need to see which way the current pushes, watch everyone around you and see what they're doing. That's what you saw in the program. From far above you see people, and they swim with all their might in what you think is the wrong direction. Every choice can be the right choice unless you are only swimming to survive. My child, when you realize that a tide already pulls at you, you will see that you should have been swimming the whole time."

    Zaqaru Ball
"Now" Aburnar's words ring in Arnadred's ears like explosions. She stops mid stride. After a moment she leans up and kisses Aburnar's cheek, and then she turns to walk towards the exit of the building.

The two white robed individuals stop their discussion when Arnadred kisses Aburnar. They look to each other and break apart. One advisor moves across the dance floor towards Aburnar, and the other advisor moves to intercept Arnadred.

What leverage would it give you even in your own house? I ask for five Agents to match my investment."

The room stops. The music stops. Darkness envelops Bolkas and his eyes cover in black. Then there are lights, the room glows purple and green. There are no people, only colors and heat. The music flies visibly across his vision. In less than a moment the room shifts back to normal. A smile is smeared on Bolkas's face.

I hope that you will listen to Duchess Izabella and myself. What would House Greenflame care to see in Hallow? Persephone has bullied her way in, we can only assume that she will continue that move in other sectors and demand an Empire that she doesn't care for.

"Anoa debriefed that without any coordination our fleets worked together on the battlefield. We hope that we can keep in alignment with the brash attacks of Steel." Belbryn smiles at the Starosta representative. We consider you an ally. What do you care to see in the Hallow sector?"

There’s a soft blush as Arnadred kisses Aburnar’s cheek. A smile breaks through. As Arnadred Gilkara walks off, Aburnar Zaqaru quickly catching up offering his arm to her. Smiling to each other they move through the Grand Ballroom, the grand arch of the entrance beckoning them as they seek to make their way to the exit.

“Friends of yours?” Aburnar asks with a nudge, as from the corner of his eyes, he sees two white robed persons approach them. He does not look directly to them, only a faint glance filled with suspicion towards their general direction.

When Bolkas’ vision returns to normal, the colours of the people are blotted out by Ayallal Attar infront of him, looking him in the eyes, her arms wrapped around his shoulders. A wicked grin, a kiss, a quick turn through the music without time to settle from the darkness. Another whisper of seduction, inviting him closer.

She leans against him, her worn face with wrinkles for a moment sad, her age starting to show as she takes a breather.

The dragonfly drone captures Duke Torbin Gilkara chuckling as he responds to Earl Samsu Charcho’s question. He nods, in acknowledgement of the renovations, shows a grin at the joke and looks with interest as Duke Torbin Gilkara mentions the consequences of all the invites.

“Indeed, Duke Torbin Gilkara. So far, you’ve been the only noble declaring your support to Crown Princess Persephone Laramy’s proclamation, offering to conquer the other Houses. How far does this ambition stretch?”

    Hallow Conference
The second day opens with Queen Persephone outlining her initial points for the new vassalage treaties. They are burdensome, but not so much to be tyrannical. A thirty percent tribute to the sector, a requirement to submit a levy of naval forces during war time, only allowing wars approved by House Laramy, and the heirs of the Houses must be sent to Sigma Draconis to be educated at the Imperial Academy.

All the remaining lords and ladies refuse of course. This is only the second day and no is willing to fold on the initial demand from a monarch with such a shaky support base. The rest of the day is filled with arguments as the requirements are debated back and forth. Along with an entertaining piece when Duke Arnos accuses House Mertens of manipulating the markets against. Which most agree is probably true if only because House Mertens is always manipulating the markets.

    The Zaqaru Ball
Duke Lacross gives Eskhit Zaqaru a short polite bow, "Whatever you recommend. Though unfortunately I won't be able to enjoy it properly. I had an encounter with a Lornax Berserker in my younger reckless years that resulted in substantial injuries to my head. It's all healed now, but ever since I've been unable to properly taste food or drink. My doctors say there are newer techniques now that could fix the discrepancies, but I've never found time for the operation."

    -----

Lady Liesse Voss give the young Zaqaru man a warm smile and a curtsy. "With pleasure Lord Zaqaru." She leads the way to dance floor.

    Jitters in the Dark
House Ytterbus has been asking around for any noble house that would be willing to lend them military aid. They have made some ominous findings in their exploration which point to a greater threat in the void. Nothing concrete, but they want to be prepared.

"The current situation is unfortunate, but we don't see a path forward that results in the upstarts being pushed back. We can at least confine them in the Byvale sector. Whatever their ambivalence about minor earls being absorbed no Great House would allow them to gain even more power without a fight."

    Spoiler: House Vastadd [Enigma: 5]

    Duke Nabuna Zaqaru,

No, House Vastadd is not warrior house and we do not wish to be drawn into any unneccessary conflicts. If House Laramy wishes to test us our alliance with House Greenflame will be more than sufficient to stand against them. But we find it unlikely that such a circumstance will come to pass. Persephone may have the backing of the House of Steel, but there are too many who do not support her for her to attack everyone.

It is far more likely that she will concentrate on the houses in the Imperial sector proper first.

    Duchess Izabella Vastadd

Duke Berger frowns and pounds his fist on his chair, "House Voss never. Not until they return my sister. I'd rather bow to Persephone first." He furrows his brow, "House Vastadd though is something. Izabella is my third cousin, and I know she tried to get House Greenflame to back down when they declared war. Let me think of the proper way to contact her."

    Spoiler: House Mertens [Enigma: 6]

    Diplomat Namzara Zaqaru,

It's all about symbolism. The correct strategic decision would have been to cede Sigma Draconis to the Collective while sacking their holdings in Cordoba. While it is true that House Laramy has substantial holdings on Sigma Draconis those belong to the old guard who were most loyal to Emperor Sebastian and by extension they have little love for the currently siblings.

It would not have greatly impacted either Alexander or Persephone if they had been lost. Indeed the taking of Sigma Draconis, while initially humiliating, would have given the ample pretext for additional wars on the collective and heightened public approval for such actions.

But then House Greenflame and Gilkara forced House Berger to back down and prompt a Grand Conference. At that point Sigma Draconis couldn't be lost without massively impacting either of the siblings chances for the throne. As is currently clear Persephone was the one with the most to lose if the Grand Conference did not proceed as planned so of course her forces were forced to defend the capital from the Collective.

No doubt Alexander would have been pleased to see her forces suffer in the fighting with the Collective, but if one sibling defended the capital and the other didn't the public perception would tilt heavily. Still it was a close thing. My sources tell me that Alexander's armada was at the Imperial border before he decided to return and aid his sister.

Symbolically House Laramy has won this round, but again strategically this was a poor move. My analysts tell me that the Collective has been increasing it's military forces on an exponential curve. The only thing stopping them was House Greenflame bottling them up in their own sector, but now that they've been left to grow in Cordoba they will no doubt be even stronger in the coming years.

If this is unacceptable, the entrance to the Byvale is blessed by a narrow string of systems; [-04, -04], [-03, -05], and within the House of Steel's own territory: [-02, -07]. I would imagine that any of these other systems would also make good candidates for such a blockade, although it may be... unusual to have a blockade much further within the Consortium's territory."

    Hallow Grand Conference
Torbin looks pleased as the other nobles refuse the initial requests.

"Your highness. First and foremost, I request that our heir apparents be excluded from the demanded education at the Imperial academy. We will cycle those that prove capable of using the education when our education lacks on certain subjects, but we must retain our heir apparents for their molding.

Secondly, as the only house that has offered to pledge fealty, House Gilkara demands recompense for the Triune pact and ourselves for the damages done by the Tartarus Steel Alliance. We allow the Triune pact to make their request, and we request fighters of the types that caused so much destruction on the starfields to be outfitted for our warships. Hexshot and Orca Bombers.

Third, we demand that the Tartarus Steel pact enter a clause that they will never claim a King title over any sector.

Fourth, House Gilkara recognizes the threat to the stability of the Imperium brought by the Democratic Collective. We demand that they must be vanquished.

Finally, we demand that our pledge be sworn at Kuldavis. Before the Titanium Throne. Not here, at some Hallow mockery."

You could make a counter offer to find backers. It would put you in Persephone's crosshairs, but we both know that you'll be her first target. A wise council once told me that public declarations can bring support to light."

We have no intention of making anyone in your part of space uncomfortable and we are fine avoiding setting up our own defenses deep into your territory unless you want our aid yourself. Persephone Laramy may contact you at some point about making sure the steel fleet can cross through your space to ensure they can aid in her wars in the imperial sector." The envoy smirks and bows, "I recommend making sure she pays through the nose for the pleasure. Those of us who have been denied titles for so long deserve ample reward for our loyalty in these hard times."

She waits a moment and smiles, "The high courtesan also wanted me to ask you about a full military alliance, we doubt you will be attacked but your territory being held by anyone but you would put Steel and Tatarus at risk and so she wanted you to know if you ensure our safety we will do the same for you, even with our sudden good fortune. We also by extension include house of Steel in this defensive pact." She smiled and thought on, "we also want to make sure we can counteract any moves by the nobility and their pompous insults towards those like us. Also making sure stardust never comes under threat is making sure we can freely move through one anothers space in times of concern. We would like to make this alliance formal. A formal prestige contract to ensure both of us follow such ideals would hopefully make you feel safer since I know we have grown expontentially."

The Collective's situation is balanced on a knife's edge. Our empire is weak, at least by comparison to fifty years ago. The Collective has proven that by its actions both with the protectorate and the siege of Sigma Kuldav. The Collective itself would hardly be a threat to the Imperium at large, even two or three houses would stand a reasonable chance of destroying them in their current state. They are but a puppet of greater powers, and I truly believe that in its current state the Imperium could not handle a war with the Collective’s master, the Infinite Republic, right now. Should enough powers come together enough to truly threaten the Collective, the Infinite Republic would simply step in with their fleet and bring ruin to the Imperium. I was nearly ready five years ago, I had prepared an alliance that I felt was strong enough without being too obvious a threat, but before we could make our move, the Laramy siblings declared their war as though it were a competition. If we had intervened with the war we would have risked public insult to Laramy, the intervention of the Infinite Republic, and the very core of the Empire would have been mangled by the actions of house Berger.

Now I find myself somewhat paralyzed between the dangerous politics of Hallow, for which part of the fault is my own diplomacy, though it seems like Persephone would have had something along the lines of the Hallow Conference in mind soon enough anyway, and the still very dangerous Collective. I have some plans, though they yet require refining. What would you have done in my situation?

Greetings from House Greenflame, as many of you have likely heard, we have been hard at work manufacturing equipment designs from the meticulous minds of Belephron Academy. For those with concerns of the military bent we have the following:
    [1 trade / 3 equipment]
    Hexshot Fighters:
Ultralight fighters with few peers, Star Superiority Fighters will screen heavier ships and tend light ships from the stars. Six retrothruster engines pair with six Umbra III Blasters for unrivaled manuverability, see the footage from the Sashaw star race for one in action. Dorsal and belly mounted lighting lasers give a full field of fire as well as superior atmospheric close air support.

    Orca Bombers:
An ultralight torpedo delivery ship designed to shake battleships to fragments with forty inboard launching nuclear magnetic torpedoes. A pair of lightning lasers ward off interceptors and grant some dueling capability against other bombers.

    2 trade / 5 equipment
    Radiant Shield Generators:
Based on the designs of the Heart of the Fleet prototype, Radiant shields are an upgrade in every aspect over void shield generators. While less applicable to Mercantile starships and pleasurecraft, military grade power generators will easily absorb the extra power intake. In exchange, radiant tech displays far tougher resistance to both impact and energy charge weaponry, as well as noteworthy decreases in recharge intervals.

    Fighter Forges:
A heavy support module focused on carriers, the fighter forge is a shipboard ultralight factory, allowing ships to harvest anything from metallic asteroids to battlefield scrap and create endless fleets of fightercraft, even in the heat of battle.

And for those interested in building up their House to powerful new economic heights we have:

    2 trade / 5 equipment
    Colony Optimization AI
Based on the Urza AI, this program integrates with a colony mainframe and internet system to carefully manage growth, production, and socialization. Depending on the state of a colony buyers can expect to see anywhere from a 10% to 30% in production efficiency.

    2 trade
Tech Archive: Optimization Package (10% off all colony building)
Access to the Greenflame Technology Archive, and thus costing only [4 university]
Most colonies are harsh places to live where humans can barely survive or not at all without environmental protection. Technology here ranges from stone age to struggling to reach space. These however are backwaters and not particularly considered by any established power. An actual earldom is mostly defined by being supplied with fusion plants and a spaceport that has working antigravity berths. Such a colony is able to fully utilize its local raw materials to provide exports and build its own spaceships. Still even these tend to be rather adhoc. A duke looking to expand knows that a good set of well integrated equipment goes a long way to smoothing the early stages of a colony. A set like the suite of modular gear with interchangeable parts well written user manuals your scientists have put together.

Ayallal Attar lets herself be guided to the private booth to catch her breath and grins as Bolkas Gilkara gets close to her. She slyly offers a gaze at him as he offers the two vials. Leaning against him, she taps his nose playfully. “You tempter. Here you go.” She slides the glass of water directly to him, without pouring anything into it while taking the other normal glass of water and drinking from it. Leaving the vials alone, she rests easy against him.

“Why so set on the list, instead of the very keys themselves?” With a curious glance she looks up at him. “And why little old me? I know I’m ravishing to look at..” She jokes, playfully letting her fingers move across his arm. “..but why not a Duchess, such as Duchess Izabella Vastadd or Duchess Brechtje Voss?”

After she drinks her water and he drinks his, she beckons to him to go to another ballroom. “Let me have another round of pleasure. This one’ll be lighter.” Guiding him to another ballroom, it’s actually darker, but the dance and the music is not meant for fast dances, for upbeat, but for intimate dances, smooth under colourful lights and holograms moving with swirling patterns through the ballroom on the beat of the music. The rhythm is enticing, the melody alluring, the dance hot.

Aburnar offers a soft grin as Arnadred’s pace moves through a rush out of the Main Ballroom. He elegantly strides forward with long paces, not looking as rushed, but with fine pace. “You’re going the wrong way.” He ushers as they move through the Entrance Hall to the large doors leading outside. Some late guests are arriving, being welcomed by nobody other than Duke Nabuna Zaqaru. “Follow me.”

Offering his arm to her, he guides her at a fast, but graceful pace towards Duke Nabuna Zaqaru. “Hello granduncle Nabuna, could you help me and delay those two?” He nudges to the two white robed men. “Aburnar, good to see you, as well as Miss Arnadred Gilkara. What’s the matter?” Aburnar quickly answers. “I’d like a private moment to get to know my dance partner Arnadred better.” Duke Nabuna Zaqaru looks at Arnadred for acknowledgement.

Arnadred courtesies and says “If it doesn’t displease the Duke.” Duke Nabuna grins for a moment and nudges to the Hall where the children dance. “Let’s hope they don’t trip over your young cousins.” Winking to the both of them as they make their way to the ballroom for the young, Duke Nabuna Zaqaru turns towards the two white robed men. “Greetings, how do you find the Zaqaru Ball so far?” He starts off, blocking their path and given his title, demanding a formal response and thus a delay.

Meanwhile, the two make their way through the Ballroom in a fast, but not inappropriate pace. Aburnar gives a short pull to Arnadred’s arm before letting go and blocking the path of an overeager girl as he lowers himself. “Hello Lisil!” “Hi Aburnar!” “There are two persons coming, dressed fully in white and they’d love to play with you and your friends.” Lisil’s eyes light up and soon enough, she turns around. “Nannu, Lila! Klaya, Jorgen! Artere! There’s somebody who wishes to play!”

Aburnar and Arnadred move on through the halls between the ballrooms and Aburnar offers her a warm smile. “Let’s go through the gardens.” Aburnar offers before moving through a crowded ballroom, taking her for a dance to the other side, a shortcut meant to confuse those following them.

Meanwhile, as the white robed men were able to get off the formalities with Duke Nabuna Zaqaru, they are surrounded by several young girls and a boy, the oldest two of which claim they are to dance with them, while another giggles and another nods eagerly, stating they are to play.

    Dear Duke Farid Saquar,

I will honestly answer what I would have done. With the death of the Emperor and the very might of the Haythem Fleet at my beckoning, I would have called for a Crusade against the vile Collective, finally demanding an end to their wretched ideology within the Imperium. Any who would join would get a part of their lands, based on contribution.

Naturally I did not stand in your position and I am sure I am missing information you do have. For by your words, you predict the Infinite Republic to step in if enough attack the Collective. Something I would not predict, based on the information I have, or rather, lack.

Therefore I can only feel you worries are misplaced. The Dukes within the Imperium have been building their power. While I acknowledge the Houses do not stand together as they did under the Emperor, they, like the Infinite Republic, have grown stronger. If the Infinite Republic is to intervene, there is little doubt they will band together.

In your place, I would have attacked the Collective five years ago. Risking a public insult is but a small sacrifice compared to assured victory your alliance and the Laramy siblings with House Jinks and the Duchy of Lyrae attacking the Collective could have. If they wish to make it a competition, a race, then by increasing the stakes in participating, or negotiating, they are bound to put in more effort.

House Berger’s declaration of war against a single system held by one of the Laramy siblings is hardly reason to act as if the very core of the Empire is being threatened. Instead, it would have been a distraction to Archduke Alexander Laramy, while his forces and ally could have focused on the Collective. A much better alternative would have been to attempt to recruit House Berger to attack the Collective instead.

I readily admit that is in the realm of speculation, however. Similarly, I can only speculate whether your alliance still stands ready to act against the Collective. Yet, if even House Greenflame with the mighty Haythem fleet, known for protecting the border against threats, and those standing in an alliance with them are not to attack the Collective, then who will? It has become obvious that the Laramy siblings did not. In that light, I fear what House Laramy’s current private communications with the Collective entail.

Whether or not my fear is grounded, if nothing is done, now that the Collective has sway in Cordoba, the Collective will only grow stronger and bolder. I do not fear the Infinite Republic’s intervention, but rather the lack of intervention by the Dukes against the Collective.

Therefore, I hope House Greenflame will act and be a beacon behind which others gather to strike against the Collective.

    Yours sincerely,
    Diplomat Namzara Zaqaru
