Amon Ram nods. "Very well. We shall continue the deception."

As the lander comes in and finally lands in the bay, he will open the ramp and look out to make sure there aren't twenty lascannons aimed at the door before stepping out into the bay.

Elisanth delicately detaches the face from his helmet, rolls it up and stores it in a pouch on his belt.

"Very true. I shall save it for the right moment, to provide the greatest dramatic effect."

Paline mutters "Not much dock for them to contact now" to herself as she gets up and pulls her cloak tight against her body. She eases her breathing and over the comm whispers "One of you marines mind telling me the layout? I'd like to know where to hide now versus when I'm trying to run away after lighting someone or something else on fire."

The docking bay was dark, dimly lit by failing luminators. When Zahariel landed it was empty, the large bay doors rumbling slowly shut behind their assault boat. Deep grinding vibrations jostled the small craft, transmitted through the landing struts from the deck below. Those who had been on a voidship before recognized what was happening; they were accelerating, moving away from the dock. They waited for a moment, before the pressure meter on the Shark's ramp release read as equalised, and then disembarked.

The bay was not a large one. It had probably been intended for utility shuttles, once, but now it was disused. Trailing cables hung limply from the ceiling, and two of the three great fuel tanks along the wall were empty, indicator runes blinking on their control panels. The power still worked, at least, but it seemed as though this part of the ship was mostly forgotten. For the moment, they were the only ones here.

'I admit I was curious to see how they'd react.'

Heidric walks down the ramp ahead of the others. If anyone wanted to kill them here they could have done it before they docked. To Paline, 'There's usually areas of the ship that the crew have abandoned. Even if there's something else living there instead I don't think they'll give us any trouble.'

He'll look for any sign that they were being observed. 'Not very welcoming are they?'

Zahariel was the first to notice they were being watched, his helmet display lighting up with threat runes as he looked up. Shrouded in the darkness above them were several active picters and autoturrets, massive cannon barrels trained on them and their craft. Paline noticed them a moment later, though without a helmet's auto-senses it was much harder for her to pick them all out in the gloom. There were three, each with a pair of twin-linked guns attached, but they had not yet opened fire.

Presumably because someone was actually coming to meet them. Slowly, the single bulkhead door leading to the rest of the ship ground open, and a squad of armed men filed through. They wore a variety of mismatched armour styles, only a few bearing original armsmen insignia on their breastplates. Normally they would have been armed with shotguns, but it looked as though they'd been told to raid the armoury before coming along. Two had missile launchers, and two more had brought flamers, their pilot lights flickering. One was carrying a poorly-maintained meltagun. The rest had hellguns, half of which were modified for use with standard charge packs, and the other half of which had managed to scrounge up the heavier power backpacks. Behind them came a man the three Astartes recognised from the Captain's memories; scraggly beard, wide hat, long blue coat with gold trim, and a brace of duelling pistols hung across his chest. Hector de Torvega.

For her part Paline crouched down when she finally noticed the turrets and whispered to the others "One tank is left. If things go south with your talking then tell me to light it up." She maintained her position in such a way that she could flame the general area after darting out of cover.

'Well not yet anyway.' To the crew, 'Thank you for allowing us to dock. It would have been most inconvenient to have been shot down in a place like this. Which one of you should we be talking to about gaining passage out of here?'

'I am most interested in this Observatory if there is any truth to the stories, but I can't speak from any personal experience. My colleage might be able to help with that.' Heidric gestures at Sol.

'As for the Ordos, they have a nasty tendency to keep watch over interesting places to see who comes looking for them. It's far easier to allow the Library on Fenksworld to stay open as a lure then to shut it down.' All of which was true, even if it wasn't neccessarily true in this case. 'A friend of mine told me your former Captain had a run in with agents of the Inquisition and asked me to keep a look out for your ship's arrival. If Captain Wynd didn't see fit to mention that I would assume that he chose to co-operate with them to save his own skin. Normally my job is to look for interesting things for my patrons, and in the course of that I have picked up the odd bit of information over how the Ordos operate.'

"No, no, now's not the time to talk of such frivolities. Let us go to somewhere more... pleasant, to continue our discussions?"

"A friend of yours, aye? Patrons? Now who might that be?" De Torvega frowned at Heidric. "But if Wynd is still alive, well, that'll be a problem. We've got his ship, but he didn't last as long as he did by being a fool. You may be right."

He looked around, at the single attack craft sitting in the bay, and the autoturrets in the ceiling. Came to a decision. "Aye, we'll go somewhere more comfortable, but ye'll have to keep in mind whose ship you're on. The lot of you, up front. My men and I will follow."

Heidric grins widely, 'We get around, and we're always looking for new friends.' Proving any of that might be difficult, but as long as he seemed to be taken at his word. If necessary he could always demonstrate what he was capable of.

He'll prepare to leave as ordered, if only to get out of the line of fire of the turrets.

Elisanth took the lead, tossing his head back, crest flourishing as he did so. He acted as if he owned the place, despite having spent scant minutes aboard. Turning his head back, he looked the captain directly in the eye:

Zahariel sticks to the rear of the group, next to the Captain's men. He made sure to keep the melta-man within sword's reach. That one was likely the most dangerous. To the Astartes, at least. If the fools with missile launchers opened up at close range everyone else was likely doomed. He looked down at the man.

Which way, good mortal? I don't believe I've been on this ship before.

"This is, what, a ... I know this class. This way, right?" Sol gestured in the direction of the bridge, as best he could tell, and set off that way.

"So, I should clarify - we can't be one hundred per cent sure the captain survived, but we robbed a dying man, he got back up, and then the entire dockyard started shooting at us, so that's fairly conclusive if you ask me."

"Or coincidental. Could be you angered more than one person down there? But you'll have to tell me how this connects to the Inquisition," the Captain said, scowling at Elisanth's back.

The armsmen directed them down the corridors, in roughly the direction Sol had indicated. The two with missile launchers were hanging back, weapons down. It would have been too dangerous for them to assist, in the tight confines of the ship's corridors. Zahariel, walking more slowly, kept the meltagunner casually within striking distance. He, and the other Astartes, knew the ship well from the old Captain's memories; they were heading towards the bridge, but likely not directly to it. The captain was probably taking them towards the staterooms and guest areas, which would be an improvement over the dim shuttle bays.

Walking there would take some time, however, as signs of life in the corridors slowly increased, and the lighting became brighter and better maintained. None of the ten armsmen seemed inclined to talk, much, leaving De Torvega as their only source of conversation.

I could perhaps borrow your Astropath and ask for my patrons to provide the proof, although I have no idea how long that would take. Perhaps the papers we took from your former captain will speak of our good intentions in the meantime.'

    "We shall see."

The group drew up at a door, and De Torvega gestured for them to enter. It was a small meeting chamber, near the bridge proper. From the faded tapestries on the walls, and the chairs made of actual wood with peeling gold leaf on the backs, it had once been quite fine. Undoubtedly the old captain had used it to entertain his most honoured guests.

"I'm afraid the chairs are a little small for you three," the Captain said to the Astartes. "You'll have to stand. Now let's see those papers, aye?"

He went to take a seat near the head of the table, followed by his armed escort. For the first time, however, the captain no longer had the men between him and the Astartes. The necessities of sitting at the table meant that they were behind him, rather than in front.

The guards would need to be eliminated as soon as their ruse would be revealed.

Zahariel stayed close to the meltagunner, looking up briefly at Amon Ram. When the sorcerer made his move, Zahariel would be ready to take out the greatest threat. He scrutinized the mortal, his armor, his posture, seeking out weak spots. The first strike would be decisive. The man was a traitor, a mutineer, no better than the "Lion" and his rabble, and Kinslayer was hungry...

He read a few pages, scanning over passages. "These were his personal notes, aye? You think he ever expected anyone else to read them? If I know old Wynd, he wanted to keep the Observatory all to himself."
