Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
Commenting on your analysis (that I snipped from quoting you), I have no quarrel with any of it. I think you're pretty much on the money with the idea of MitD getting the destination for a Teleport/Dimension Door/so far unidentified travel spell from V's mind through telepathy. Likewise, a combination of telepathy and high diplomacy is what's allowed him to more effectively manipulate Team Evil in recent strips.
As for your question above- that's down to MitD initially being very lazy and immature, up to the time of his meeting O-Chul in Azure City (IMO anyway). The difference is between having high Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma, and actually using them for something. Prior to the Azure City arc, he was content to let himself be led around by his "friends" in Team Evil. Now he's taking a more active role and actually using his abilities; not just being amazed when things happen to go right, but making them happen.

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
Sure, but all of these aren't a semi-formal guessing game.
If there was a mysterious monster and one of the clues is that it clearly had a mouth, and the mystery monster turned out to be a fruit pie with a mouth, well... most guessers would be probably pissed.
This has been discussed many times over the years in these threads - yeah, sometimes Rich "cheats", but in the case of MitD, he's on record it's guessable, so he can't "cheat" too much.Offer good while supplies last. Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
The problem with Dimension Door is the range. It's way too short to teleport V and O-Chul across a continent. Not that this is a problem for the Protean, since it has another explanation for that scene.
What I don't really understand is how a creature with such high stats could be so... innocent? oblivious? dense? I guess anybody can roll a 3 on initial stat rolls, but still.
Then he befriends O-Chul, who essentially puts him to task for why he's associating with seriously awful people. And at that point, he's the equivalent of the nice person in the bullies' friend group. He associates with the worst people because they make him feel he belongs with them, and because he hasn't seen them do anything sufficiently horrible to consider leaving. Besides, none of the things Xykon and Redcloak have done have threatened himself or someone he cares about, so why should he try and compromise what he perceives as their sincere friendship? Then O-Chul breaks out of jail, and when he makes his motives clear, MitD is forced to choose something for himself. For once, this nice character sees his awful friends being terrible to people he cares about, and doesn't really know how to stand up to the clear aggressor in the situation; and in all likelihood, MitD still doesn't want to force a confrontation between himself and Xykon and/or Redcloack because he fears what that will lead to. So rather than doing something to directly thwart their actions, he acts subtly, pursuading them to avoid fighting people he knows aren't bad, throwing them off course from doing terrible things, quietly rescuing people from facing their wrath, etc.
In this sense, I think there's an interesting parallel between MitD and Therkla. They both have friends with contradicting interests, are generally apathetic towards the greater picture, and are competent enough to undermine their friends' actions if it means (under naive pretenses) they might forget about their conflicts and be one big happy family. Whether MitD is throwing off TE because he wants them to give up so everyone can just be friends as Therkla aspired, or if he's actually working to betray Xykon, I think remains to be seen. Either way, I find this rationale more appealing than the suggestion that it's because his statblock says he has low intelligence or whatever.Last edited by Aspheric; 2019-12-14 at 05:38 AM.

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
In #1189 all Team Evil are looking the worse for wear - except the Monster. And the Monster is ready and raring to go for another door. Can we write this off as youthful enthusiasm, or could it be evidence that the Monster has Regeneration or Fast Healing?

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
Or maybe he is really beat up, you just can't see it because of the shadows.

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
Probably just another indicator that he is hard to damage, as Miko and Belkar has already learned. We'd probably need to see him take damage and then heal it before we can conclude any regenerative capabilities.
There's probably more leeway off-camera, though I don't think the MitD is allowed to leave the shadows it might be okay to extend a limb or something. He's probably not just dead weight, but it's hard to say for sure of course.
The umbrella might get damaged like it did after the explosion in the desert. But other than that it's hard to show any damage.

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
Or the MitD may have got so much damage that Redcloak healed him already in the dungeon.

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
Oh, seems like I haven't actively participated in these threads since.. well, '16, as I have no registered vote. Put me up for Protean!
Also, MitD could very well be let out of his umbrella in the darkness of a dungeon, much like his original appearances. I find it hard to believe he's brought along at all if he doesn't contribute much, considering how hard these dungeons are and Xykon's beliefs on power vis-a-vis challenge.

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
Doesn't the damage to MitD's umbrella indicate when he has been in a fight?

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
Not really? He was in fights with both Miko and Belkar, and neither damaged the umbrella. Now, whether this means that he took no damage at all, that he took some, but only major damage will be shown on the umbrella, or that the umbrella is not an indicator of MitD's damage, we have no way to tell.

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
Hello, I didn't read this topic for so long, but it seems that still there isn't a general consensus on what the MitD is.... very well
I have re-read the first topic, and I wanted to say 2 things:
1) I noticed that my vote isn't phrased clear as I thought it was.... Can the curator add to my vote the "pure" black slaad, after my first sentence? Thank you :)
2) In the Black Slaad section there is a point about trademark that I don't understand completely, but the fact that the Giant has shown a Red Slaad a point that Slaadi can be used on the comic freely? Sorry if the question has been asked already, but the topic is too huge to search :P

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
So just a point of observation
When hanging around with O-Chul Mitd seems to have grown more intelligent - or perhaps more in control of its powers and abilities? Certainly a far cry from its snack eating whilst watching the crystal ball days
Now after a few (days?) back solely with Team Evil it seems to have regressed to being a bit ‘dopey’.
Could there be anything that would explain that?
Also, as a side observation. Whilst R has said V was eventually written as ambiguous gender, in the invisibility escape scene the imp uses the term ‘she’. I think I’ll stop there though as that may have been discussed elsewhere and isn’t relevant to this topic. It’s just i had forgotten that bit from my previous reads.'Utúlie'n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie'n aurë! “The day has come! Behold, people of the Eldar and Fathers of Men, the day has come!" And all those who heard his great voice echo in the hills answered, crying:'Auta i lómë!" The night is passing!"

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
MitD doesn’t want Team Evil to realize his newfound independence. Far from being ‘dopey’ he has enough critical thinking to use Tranchant Political Analysis on Redcloak’s party line (even though he tries to disguise that as something ‘some guy said’).

I don’t think this is it but for the example of an out-of-control shapeshifter: Krahka from Bionicle.

Re: MitD XIII: Learning is happening
As I look through the thread for other reasons, I realize that I had said Redcloak’s niece (as a joke) months ago and it was counted as my guess, which I had completely forgot about and caused me to burst into laughter. But I do in fact have an actual guess so since I’m already counted might as well say it, Ruck convinced me that it was the Protean in his post, I just didn’t want to say it until I’d read the arguments for the others, but if I already have a vote might as well make it accurate or whatever (but Redcloak’s niece is second place for da memes).
Arrrgh, here be me extended sig!
