(You are in a 10' wide hallway. You wouldn't get an attack of opportunity. AoO occur when leaving a threatened space not entering them. You could try and stealth and get a surprise round. It'd be opposing checks with your stealth, if there is something beyond.)

I'd pull open the door, listen for what comes through it, and if it sounds like I'm going to be jumped by a horrible monster I'd slam the door on it really hard. I guess it counts as an attack with an improvised weapon?

As you pull open the door to look beyond, you can see into the room. It is about 40'x40' wide and along the far edge a creature was stalking. Upon hearing the door creak as you opened it to get a better view, it turns to face you.

As you look at it, you know what the source of light in this room is. Before you is what can only be described as a canine-esque creature. It stands on four massive legs, with long sharp claws. But instead of fur, it is covered in flames. You can see tendrils of fire licking out from it. As it takes a step you watch the flames coating it's entire body shift with it's skin. It appears to be less on fire and more that the fire IS its fur. As it turns to face you it lets out a snarl, slobber dripping from its sharp teeth anticipating the taste of its prey.

(Roll initiative, and if you'd like to roll your attack as well feel free. Include any actions you'd like as well)

    Deon snorts. "Brave the fire..."

    (1d20+1)[6]

How sturdy is the door? Is it sturdy enough to attack with it as an improvised weapon? I know it's on the hinge, but I was thinking I'd prepare an action to slam the door really hard in the fire thing's face as it charged. (Assuming I win initiative.)

Or would my club hurt more?

Edit: Actually, with that initiative I'm not sure it matters.

(There is still a good bit of distance between you and it. You've been asking a lot of questions, so I'll say this time if you want to have readied an action as you open the door I'll allow it. I'd assumed you wanted a readied action of opening the door and being ready to slam it on anything that got close, given your previous post about improvised weapons.)

I assume it's (1d20+2)[6] for the attack, but if I'm supposed to use DEX instead of STR you can correct by subtracting one.

What do I roll for damage? Edit: from the look of that roll I assume it's purely hypothetical, but I'm still curious.

As the beast rushes towards you, it lunges to bite down with its powerful jaws. You quickly slam the door shut, stopping it's attack. Unfortunately you moved too soon and failed to pin the beast how you had planned. It yelps as you slam the door shut on its nose. You feel the impact of it swatting at the door as you hold it shut.

It looks like the door held, but I don't have much faith in it doing that long-term, or in my ability to open it and close it quickly enough to pin the wolf. I guess it's a straight up fight from here on out.

Does releasing my pressure on the door count as an action, or is that a free action? If it is an action, can I still let go of the door and immediately attack?

As you let the door go, it creaks open. Beyond you see the beast, who lunges forwards and bites down on your arm. You manage to swing and crack it in the head as it bites down on you, hopefully the force of the blow is enough to let you escape. You are surprised that doing so doesn't light your club on fire. In fact, as it has a hold of your arm, you realize that the flames coating it's body aren't burning you at all.

(You take 2 damage, and I need a strength saving throw from you please, so d20+str mod. Also roll your damage. In the future we'll say whenever you roll an attack, roll damage as well. That way if it hits we can progress on a little faster. That work?)

    (Not a problem!)

You hit the creature solidly on the head and it collapses to the ground, releasing your arm from it's jaw. The light in the room goes lower, as if to acknowledge the beast's state of unconsciousness. As you look beyond you can see two openings to the left and the right. Directly across the room from you is another door. The beast lays halfway through the door at your feet.

You drag the beast into the room from which it came and close the door behind you. As you grab it, you realize the flames haven't gone out. You can still see the beast breathing, its chest gently rising and falling. As you grab it you realize that the flames you saw before are actually fur. Your hands can feel it as you grab the beast. The fur is thin and soft. The subtle movements of the beast caused it to look like the flickering of flames. Even now as it lays there breathing raggedly, you can see the illusion of gently flickering fire.

What can I see through the openings to the left and right? (If you want me to provide the order again, let's go with left to right.)

(Also, I didn't want to drag the beast back into the room from which it came. I want to pull it completely out of that room, and then enter that room myself and close the door behind me so that I have some warning if it wakes back up.)

(You came from a hallway hence my confusion. We'll go with you did what you intended and the beast is in the hallway behind you with the door closed.)

The openings to the left and right appear to be more 10' wide hallways. They extend past your vision in the dim light.

You do not. As far as you can tell, everything seems normal. You know, except the fire like furred beast you've knocked out and dragged into the hall. It smells pretty awful, as does the room you are. It smells as if the beast has been here for some time with no way to clean itself. Although you do notice, there doesn't seem to be any waste from the animal.

No gap. It looks identical to the one on the other side of the room. Except this one opens into the room, likely preventing the beast from traveling further.

There is another hallway beyond. It is about 20' wide and extends for at least 30', the dim light prevents you from being able to see further.
