New poster - How to roll?

I dont see it anywhere in the FAQ.

I see a lot of posters using, for example, (1d20) to roll with results - but it doesnt work when i type it in. I figure either there is some code that doesnt show up that im unaware of - like Roll /Roll or that they're just rolling in real life and manually posting their results, thought the latter seems unlikely as ALL the results are bolded, making me think it's a function.

Either way - any help would be much appreciated.

It is indeed a tag function, and be aware it does not work in every section of the forums (for example, it won't work here).
