Default Ghosts of Saltmarsh character ideas

For those who are planning to play this module on its release, what kinds of character ideas are you or your players (if youíre a DM) considering?

Iím thinking of maybe rolling with a mad Alchemist artificer, or perhaps a shipwrecked Swashbuckler Rogue.

Whilst not specifically designed for this module, one of my spare PC builds is a hybrid Swords bard/Swashbuckler Rogue - who is a spy. I built her as a half-elf, to max out the skill sets which a spy would surely need. She had a very nautical flavour (I created her after watching "Crossbones"), and it feels like she might be at home in the Saltmarsh adventures.

So for generations did the sainted skull of Caius Anicius Magnus Furius Camillus ∆milianus Cornelius Valerius Pompeius Julius Ibidus, consul of Rome, favourite of emperors, and saint of the Romish church, lie hidden beneath the soil of a growing town. At first worshipped with dark rites by the prairie-dogs, who saw in it a deity sent from the upper world..

a charismatic rogue/warlock could be fun.
    Current characters:
    Drakirr (Blue Dragonborn Warlock)
    Alyfyldyr Hyalythki (Rock Gnome Wizard)
    Harilidir (Hald-elf Bard)
    Kazaharad Akaztkl (Goliath Barbarian)
    Luft (air-genasi druid)
And of course Lizard Wizard (Lizardfolk Sorcerer)

If i got the chance to play in this module (i believe i will be forced to dm it by my group -_- )
i will go with an artificer artillerist with the mariner background.

A Boatswain who is in charge of repairing the hull?
    *Arrgghhh*

Seeing a "potential pirate ship" and summoning some Ballistas for totally legit defensepurposes?
    *Arrgghhh*

Your ship will be boarded and you set up a flamethrower on the other vessel an wink goodbuy to their sails?
    *Arrgghhh*

    But, just as a sidenote:

tl;dr: The Module is More Coastguard than Navy (i am not intending to insult either one)

from everything I have seen so far from this module, it will be mostly more "coastal centric" than "pure water centric"
No dive to the plane of water, no crossing of an ocean nor a deepsea dive.
Breath water will become handy but its seems to be not really that kind of a necessity.

So playing a Triton or a Sea Elf won't break the campaign in half?

Druid 3 (Land- Coast), Monk X (Four Elements) Traveling Sage.

Casts Shillelagh on a piece of driftwood that he used when his original merchant ship was destroyed. After being lost out at sea for so long, he went slightly insane from dehydration, and believes he has seen the essence of "True Water". He now seeks the truth of the other elements as a wandering sage.

Since we are planning to play it with AL I will most likely carry on with my Wizard.

If we create new characters then a Half-Elf Swashbuckler with Sailor background

I have a few ideas I'm kicking around:

Sea Elf Way of the Drunken Master Monk: Was curious about the surface world. Met up with some sailors and joined the crew, discovered he had talents for drinking and tavern brawling.

Great Old One Warlock with Sailor Background: Called out for help when his ship went down in a storm. Woke up on an island, the sole survivor with a voice in his head telling him "We're going to have so much fun together!". He's not sure who or what the voice is, but it scares the hell out of him. Spoiler Alert, it's a Kraken.

I imagine the book will be flexible as to races and backgrounds.

However if it keeps very strictly to U1-U3, as the GM I would restrict the races at my table. No Lizardfolk, no Aquatic races, at least until the end of U2. I think the <ahem> gulf of understanding makes for a much for interesting (read: stressful for the PCs) story.

Simic Hybrid Conjuration Wizard with Entertainer background. I'd take mostly utility spells, refluffing them and the Minor Conjuration ability as transforming myself into various tools, or ways to hide. Proficiency in drums would be vital to the concept, but charisma less so. Investigation skill is also integral.

I'd play him as a blend of Rodney Dangerfield with the mannerisms of Curly from the Three Stooges. Oh, forgot to mention what type of Simic Hybrid.

I actually have a Lizardfolk Tempest Cleric with the Sailor background saved up that might be fun to play through this.

I'm a forever DM, but I want to play a pirate goblin with high Intelligence and charisma so bad, purely for the RP aspect. On class, I'm thinking of some kind of rogue.

I'll probably end up making Mr. Sticks an NPC or big bad because forever DM reasons.

Was considering either a Sea Elf Bladesinger for a swashbuckling wizard type with sea chanties, or a Polearm Master Sea Aura Storm Barbarian with a polearm for that "Most Dangerous Catch" type ice Fisher feel.

I had a couple concepts floating around.

    Tabaxi Barbarian (pirate thug, basically)
    Lizardfolk Druid (Coastal Witch)
    Grung Rogue

I think the one I've been learning towards the most however is a Firbolg Trickster Cleric, basically playing the part of the party dad with tons of corny jokes and pranks.

Kobold probably has the most obvious oomph, but I might prefer halfling... Stout or Lightfoot (I find something funny about hiding under my own crab as it swims); maybe with Bountiful Luck to help my crab buddy function better

Leaving aside the published modules, if we take Saltmarsh as, like, a microsetting, it's a really good one to play an eladrin or shadar-kai in. They actually fit into this fantasy version of Glouster, MA pretty seamlessly. If I were playing (and I'm not, I'm DMing it), I'd be really tempted by an eladrin fey chain- or tomelock in a Good party, or a shadar-kai hexblade in an Evil one.

I might also hint hint that one of my players take one of the noble or other sort of upper-class backgrounds.

Edit: There's also a new deity - a fairly interesting one - that basically screams tempest cleric.
