    End of Issue Report

We're finally here folks. Much talked about, finally coming to a close. The first Issue went incredibly long and I feel we've limped to the end rather than got here comfortably. I've expressed my worries and concerns on Discord. We're all on the same page that we do want to keep going and a slower pace is fine so long as the pace gets us somewhere. I will skip asking if we want to do an Issue 2. Enough people have indicated that they do. I will say that if people are not feeling it, while I will miss them, now's the time to say you're thinking of heading out. If that comes to pass, we'll talk about what we'll do when it happens. Similar to this.

Moonshadow hasn't messaged me since we last talked about them. They aren't just effectively out of the game. They're out fully. If Moonshadow returns, and I sure hope they do, we'll work on getting them back into the game if that's something they want. Probably not as Moonshadow, as I intend to keep them an NPC...even if not one that shows up on panels. They're still part of Sunburst's story in some way after all and once I'm back from my downtime I'll be sure to discuss with Sunburst just what that all means.

With that out of the way, here's the game plan.

    1. End of Session Move.
At the end of every session, choose one:
    - Grow closer to the team. Explain who made you feel welcome; give Influence to that character and clear a condition or mark potential.
    - Grow into your own image of yourself. Explain how you see yourself and why; shift one label up and another down.
    - Grow away from the team. Explain how you feel detached. Take Influence over you away from another character.

    2. End of Issue Move.
You've all, I think, to this point rolled for these. In the future, roll them after I post them in an End of Issue report. Any further rolls done before then will be ignored. I am not reposting them. Please post your move and what you rolled in your following post.

    3. Self Accolades and Self Reflection.
I don't have many. Overall I feel like this was an ok Issue. Some good points and lots of times I feel I dropped the ball. I could go into it more, I don't think I need to though. We did good, you all did great and I'll give myself a C+ overall. Next Issue will hopefully be much more fun and much shorter.

    4. Roses and Thorns
This is your chance. Tell me what you liked. What you didn't. Do it here in a post. Do it over PM. Do it over Discord. Don't care where.

Hikari definitely did not grow closer to the team, but she didn't grow away from the team either (even if some of the other team might feel they grew away from her). As Silk, she did what had to be done and she did it well. Circumstances in the mission kept changing for the worse, but she was able to adapt and manipulate her circumstances to her advantage. I think she grew into her own image of herself as a competent operative who's willing to do whatever it takes to take the Warlords down. However, she definitely had to hurt other people to do it, even putting some of her team in the line of fire. Shifting Superior up and Savior down. Her labels are now at:
    • Freak: +1
    • Danger: +3
    • Savior: -2
    • Superior: +2
    • Mundane: -1

    End of Issue Move:

I rolled an 11. And next time I'll wait to roll

    Roses and Thorns:
I'm really glad the rest of the team is enjoying the Hikari/Silk dichotomy. It's a cool opportunity for me to get to play a character like this. However, it becomes a problem when the issue runs long time-wise, because I end up playing an antagonist to the team for longer than anticipated, and I'm concerned that might not be healthy. That last fight sequence was pretty gnarly, and I'm looking forward to the next time Silk faces off against the team and they get to beat her full-stop.

Biggest thorn is just...posting rate has been in the dumpster. That's always a concern with PbP games; even awesome games become a chore when the posting rate loses momentum and slows to a crawl. I'm hoping we can get that back next issue. I understand the urge to tinker with a post to make it perfect, but perfect is the enemy of the good. I've had to make some quick-and-dirty posts myself just to overcome that, and I need to make that my default when time is short.

I look forward to playing Hikari and getting more of a chance to interact with the team next issue. Also, anybody who wants to take their turn being upset with her on-panel for not being there at Monkey Island, side-panels are the place for it. I think Tsunami has dibs on going first though

    - Grow closer to the team. Tsunami specifically asked for Miho's help with the Repository and took her to the Smith, he trusted her to ask the right questions of the Heirophant. She feels...useful. Needed. Giving Influence to Tsunami again; he gets to shift one of Miho's labels up and another down. Clearing Angry.

I like the rich, overall world and the custom moves; even though I wasnít part of the last game, I can still get a feel for how things went then and what the overall tone is supposed to be. The revealed-to-be-recent-past vignettes are always a good read and the reveals came out at a good rate so as to make the dawning realisations that much more impactful. As well, the opposition (I was going to say Ďvillains', but thatís not always the case) is rich and nuanced, and often has unexpected surprises.

Have to agree, posting rate took a hit, and losing momentum is rarely a good thing when gaming. I donít get a sense that anyone is disinterested, but we all need to make sure that we donít always shove these replies to the back burner. A timely decent post is preferable to an amazing but quite delayed one, at least in my books.

Iím looking forward to Ronin's continued efforts to grow into being a hero despite the dark shadow of her parentage; and learning what it actually is to be a hero rather than what she thinks it means.

    - Grow away from the team. Sunburst has definitively ended both of the fights that she's been a part of this issue, but she's done so in spectacularly destructive ways both times. Both times came at a point where someone on her team was struggling to overcome the villain (Lion/Tsunami+Ronin respectively), and her attacks were born largely from fear and panic, a 'go away' blast if you will. In the aftermath of fights, she's felt like she's the elephant in the room, the problem nobody is acknowledging, possibly even only present as a big gun. As such, she's feeling isolated from the group on an emotional level right now, and will be removing Ground Zero's influence from her.

Gathered in Gold: Youíve been tasked to clean up the mess you made by Kintsugi. Roll + Mundane. On a miss, youíve made an even larger mess. Detail it, mark a Condition and expect Kintsugi to keep a far greater level of scrutiny on you moving forward. On a hit, youíve made some progress on the clean up detail though itís far from done. Clear a Condition or gain Potential. On a 10+, do both.

The world, NPC's, and writing are all top notch. I don't really have any criticism on the way the GMing is handled.

I will agree that posting rate is slower than perhaps it could be, and I'm feeling the weight of that particular thorn because I'm aware I've been a bit of a culprit for it. I... Would love to say that'll change soon, but with retail work at christmas coming up, I'm not likely to be improving on the speed of my responses, but what I may try to do to improve things at least on my own end is set aside specific days in the week to reply to everything that needs replying to. While it won't necessarily make me faster overall, it will at least improve consistency of response times.

I really want to see Lanuola's story develop. The idea of how an absurdly strong but emotionally vulnerable character interacts with the world is interesting to me. I feel like she's beginning to dissociate from herself, viewing herself as being apart from the people she cares about, and it's an angle I'd like to explore, see how well she can re-connect, or see what happens when she fails to do so (whichever it may be).

    - Grow into his own image of himself. Mosi has push-pulled in his relationship with the team throughout the issue, reaching out and then shoving away. But he consistently put the rest of the Yojimbo into harm's way with his poor judgement and rash decision-making. And more than ever he feels the weight of his destiny, reflected in the suffering he's experienced and caused his teammates to experience. And so he doesn't feel like a hero, he feels like a foolish kid who's a danger to anyone within arms reach of him. So the pressure, the expectation, he has on himself that he needs to "grow up" has only increased. -1 Savior, +1 Danger.

All my opinion, take it with a shaker of salt.

I think I've probably said more than my fair share on the discord, so I'll keep it pretty brief. Setting (world and npcs) is fire from a story-telling perspective! That said, it suffers from being so well written that it can feel a little rigid and inaccessible at times. I loved reading all of the inserts and the ongoing mystery (especially since they involved what is ostensibly "my" created NPC). Obviously slow-posting (of which I am a culprit) is a factor in this equation -- but I do hope as we go forward we engage more in the mystery, story and world as our characters and not only as readers of this fictional comic.

I love Mosi, even if he is a bit of a sad clown muffin. I'd like to explore his civilian/personal life more, and his status as a link between peoples; between the Authority and the Guardians, between his family and his half-brother & between the Yojimbo and Silk. He declared himself to be a proud fence-sitter last issue, so I'd like to see if he can put his money where his mouth is. I've spent a lot of time building him up and crashing him down over and over and I'd like to explore the results of that and the (slightly) more mature equilibrium he's settled into by the time the time-jump rolls over and the dust has settled in San Fransapporo.

Grow closer to the team. There's been a couple times now that Lion has really counted on GZ. And they've both been the sort of situations where, if GZ couldn't deliver the help Lion was asking for, things could go very badly (see Lion throwing Lanuola into the air). A side-effect of this is that it has made GZ feel that Lion views him as someone powerful and reliable in a pinch.
So I'll be marking potential, putting it to 2/5, and it would be influence to Lion, except he already has it, so he gets to shift my labels instead.

    End of Issue Move:
Swords at Dawn: Youíve challenged Tempest, of Glavnos, to a duel. Of sorts. Sheís tasked you in taking down her top men. Roll + Danger. On a miss, youíre simply out of your depth, the defeat is as humiliating as it is decisive. Itís unlikely Tempest will spare you even another passing glance for the short term. On a hit, you distinguish yourself enough to get a limited audience with the super-villain. Far from the date youíve requested. On a 10+, you stand triumphant. To the winner goes the spoils, a chance to totally mess up a date with one of the most politically powerful Meta-Humans in the world.

    rolled an 8

    Roses and Thorns:
The setting of this game easily has the most 'lived in' feel of any TTRPG world I've played in and that is a really incredible thing to get to see in action. I agree with Hans when he says it seems a little inaccessible at times, but I understand that that is because this setting has seen many games before we came along, and it is a small price to pay for what is otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable setting.

I know I'm one of the big contributors to the slow posting rate and I apologise for that. In the future please feel free to pester me to hurry up in order to keep the post rate up.

I really like everyone's character's and really want to see how they grow and change and what sort of footprint they leave on this beautiful game setting.

While Max grew closer to Miho and had a meaningful moment with Mosi, he has some tension with Hikari and feels guilty about Sunburst having to save his butt when he jumped in recklessly. So I donít feel he grew closer or further away from the team as a whole, definitively. Heís not proud of how he handled this last mission, but heís sticking to the mission regardless of what his mentor says and regardless of the danger. Hence, Iím going with:

Grow into your own image of yourself. Max sees that he is still fallible and has room to grow as a hero and definitely as a leader still, but he knows where his morals lie. Standing up to the Smith with Ronin, and having a heart-to-heart about what it means to be a hero with Lion, heís reaffirmed that heís not going to bend his morals, and has to keep fighting to save San Fran, no matter what. To that effect, Iím lowering Superior, and raising Savior.

    Labels are now:

    • Freak: 0
    • Danger: -1
    • Savior: +3
    • Superior: +2
    • Mundane: -1

As everyoneís mentioned I think, I too love the rich world weíre playing in. It really feels full.

I also really love our diverse team and the various dynamics!

Itís been fun watching Hikari juggle her alias and responsibilities, getting to peer into both sides of her, and I do look forward to her and Max getting a chat! Sad I dropped the ball on that one as a side panel but hopefully in this new Issue there will be a moment!

Roninís done a great job at keeping cool through everything and getting stuff done. Max really respects and admires her capabilities. Iím super glad she came along to The Forge, having her stand up to The Smith while Max was confused and vulnerable really helped him and raised Miho high on his list of trust.

Mosi brings a lightness to the group with his outward facing comedic antics, but also a special breed of angst! Which is always good in a teenage super drama. If only Max knew how much Mosi was an emotional rollercoaster behind the mask... He got a taste, but...! Hopefully they can both kick some more butt soon and feel better about themselves!

Also, seeing Lion and GZ mess with each other at times but also need each other at other times has been really cool. GZ is fun and feisty and itís been neat to see him at moments of reckless anger but also all those little moments that show how he really cares for his team mates.

Poor Sunburst has been through a lot, she adds a fun element to the team being so sweet and insecure where most of the rest are quite self-assured (or at least pretending) Iím really curious to see how sheíll move forward with everything thatís happened!
Sad to see (or not see?) Moonshadow go, I was looking forward to maybe bro-ing it up more with Cindy and Max! I hope E is doing alright.

    As for thorns...
I think everyoneís pretty much covered the main thing. Hopefully we can make a communal effort to keep some kind of rhythm for the next Issue? I say that knowing full well I was part of the slowness, and I intend to make an effort to keep up a more reasonable pace this time, even as the Issue progresses! I agree with Ronin, I didnít get the sense that anyone was disinterested, just that life (and sh*t) happens. Iíll do better at poking myself, and I'm going to try and set aside a day as well to make sure I've responded to everything that needs it.

Very much looking forward to continuing with you all!

    For Ronin:

Tsunami sees Ronin as a strong, trustworthy team mate, that has more than proved both of these things as of now. Regardless of her heritage, she poses herself as a true hero in the making, one who will not easily be cowed or dissuaded from what is right, and what needs to be done. She's also wickedly smart in his opinion, to a degree he's not certain any of the rest of the team can compare or hope to understand entirely; at it's best this is both impressive and endearing in her enthusiasm, and at the worst it can perhaps be slightly alienating. For these reasons, shifting her labels as such: raise Savior, lower Mundane.

For GZ: Superior up, Mundane Down.

Mosi agrees with GZís assessment of his assessment of GZ; and definitely feels as though heís undervalued his rival throughout the issue, continually putting him at the bottom of the totem pole in the team pecking order. Well, the truth is that the bottom of the totem pole is, in-fact, the strongest of the parts because it holds everyone else up -- especially Mosi. Go figure, how having an actually clever and badass bruiser (Mosi self-esteem) has prevented all of the Lion's mistakes from going to thermonuclear-levels of bad...
