It makes sense to me. Online dating is basically a game of sitting around waiting until either your fatigue makes you settle for someone less attractive, or someone more attractive burns out and settles for you. Almost anyone could be in a relationship if they weren't holding out for someone else settling, it is a poisonous and well known feature.

So if she is moderately attractive, less attractive men are going to respond in the hopes she is settling. The same would work in reverse, a very attractive man talking to less attractive women is going to have a massive response rate.
