Yorn sits with the others, his arm held out for Massimo. He gritted his teeth but didn't make a sound as the dagger was pulled out, and only grunted a little as the man cleaned the wound. When it's dressed in some clean linen the priest had somehow found here he raises it experimentally then lowers it satisfied.

"Much obliged friend, you do good work." He says friendly as he gets sober or after a battle. He listens to Amedeo wth a severe expression."Do they need a reason? They want to kill his majesty, destroy Frassinia, defile the shrines. They need to get through us first to do that. Let them come, I say but best we hit back harder than they hit us."

"What plans do you two have now you're free?" Yorn asks Massimo and his mute partner. "There's a village down the way ruined by these rats. Needs rebuilding and protecting, could use your help if you need some time before hitting the road again."

    Hachikat Silverborne
    Fate: 3 (Pending)

Hachikat inclines her head respectfully to her two brothers in faith. The ache from using her wings so violently is starting to fade already. The beast, her kin, is slain. No more will his presence taint the earth. Viciously, Hachikat wonders at who the mother of this egg had been, and why she had failed in her duties to crush the thing before events escalated into this.

"Our meetings are too few and far between. It's an honour to meet you both again here." She smirks a little at Yorn. "The Old Gods are weaker than they have ever been, but still, at their lowest point, they hold powers we cannot even begin to comprehend. I imagine Massimo and his ever-faithful companion are not here simply due to his misfortune. I suspect there is a purpose behind our meeting." Hachikat shrugs idly, an almost sly smile on her face.

"I have work to do, and it would be preferable if Gianluca was here at the conclusion. I believe there is a vacancy in a very specific job which will open when my ritual and singing is concluded. It'll take me some time to prep and perform. Feel free to watch or join in if you wish." With that said, the harpy inclines her head again, before starting her work. She remains open to conversation for now.

She'll then work on sanctifying the shrine, and she'd like to use Gianluca's Minor Milestone (If he is allowed one?) to give him the new aspect Guardian of [Deity]'s Shrine or something similar once it's complete.

The fencing master replies to Yorn, You're right that they're a bunch of madmen who don't need a reason to do crazy things. Nonetheless, I wish we had a clearer picture of their plan and what they are doing right now. Like this, what was the whole point of attacking this village? It sure isn't just to kill us, an assassin would have been a lot better. At any rate, let's get at the bottom of this and find out if our esteemed Lord Tragone is involved with this.

He gets ups, sheathes his sword and starts looking around the camp for any evidence that relates the cultists with Tragone.

In answer to Yorn, Massimo replied, “I haven’t thought about where our path next wanders. I didn’t expect to survive this night!” he added with a nervous chuckle. “We sail upon the winds set in motion by the gods. Such has brought us here. I suspect we shall help the villagers heal their wounds and replenish what was taken by this tragedy.”

To Hachikat, Massimo agreed. “It seems so! No crossing is by chance alone, and even chance is but a riddle of the true gods.”

Gianluca beamed at the harpy’s appointment. A fraction of the doubt and remorse written on his face changed from a new sense of purpose. “It shall be done! I only hope not to fail you or the people of the village again.”

As the harpy went about her song ritual, the others fanned out about the place. However, there was little to be found among the refuse. They had nearly exhausted their search until Amedeo examined the skewered body of the cultist’s leader. Upon his body was a small sack of coins. These, the swordsman spilled into his hand, revealing a handsome sum of silver. Why would such a heretic be in possession of such a trove? Yorn came to further inspect. Looking closer, the king's taxman saw the stamped mintage was not mixed, but rather recent and from a single source.

Only two of the king's baronies insisted — against royal proclamation — on retaining their own mint. One such was Lord Tragone. These coins were clearly stamped with his distinctive livery.

@Wuff, that Fortitude focused skill. What does it Defend from? I’m not sure how different it might be from normal Courage. Maybe consider something like “Spirit” to protect from corruption type influences. Or is “Fortitude” against sources of fear? Just want to nail that down, and we’re good. For Gianluca's aspect, I'm thinking his change will not be so dramatic or miraculous. But A New Sense of Purpose is good.

Okay, full success gets you your clue.

Sounds like we are set on continuing on to Tragone? If so, we'll conclude here and try to get Melkath back with us. Feel free to include closing IC comments.

When he sees the Lord's coinage Yorn growls, a fierce rumbling sound that takes the spine from foes and miserly drinks pourers across the kingdom. "This is false coinage!" He spits out, examining it closely to see the Tragone's smug face proudly emblazoned on the fresh silver. "The King's face should be here!" He shoves the coin forward for the others to see, pointing furiously at the Baron's rat-like mug where the noble and serene visage of his majesty should sit.

Did Lord Tragone's crimes know no bounds?

"We need to warn the King, but we can't leave him free. He's already burned Mel's bar down, defiled this shrine and killed the King's subjects. I say we storm his damn castle like old times and make for the capital with his head in a sack."

I agree that we should pay Lord Tragone a visit. However, since we don't have an army at our disposal, I would advise against trying to storm his dwelling. Since you're the king's reeve and I have been his diplomat, how about we use our position to take him prisoner and escort him to face the king's justice? We might be able to avoid unnecessary bloodshed.

When Hachikat’s long and difficult task was completed, dawn was nearly upon the group. The stones resonated with a divine purity that had not been fully leeched from them. Exhausted, the harpy acknowledged that her work yielded the desired results. She was tired, but at peace. The task of searching the camp and laying to rest the victims was arduous, and each of the companions were soiled and aching by the end.

Along with confirmation of Hachikat’s labor came a sudden vision that rocked her like a bolt of lightning. It was from the gods themselves. This knowing was impossible to dismiss. Never before had she received such a powerful soul-freezing message. Normally, her connection came in the form of comforting resonances and improvisatory inspiration. The message was vexing: the king must die — and the Drago must be allowed to destroy him. It is written. And so it must be.

By mid-morning, the three trudged tiredly into the village outskirts. Massimo, Targoni returned with them, along with Gianluca who sought to get supplies to bring with him back to the old shrine. Some of the hardy folk already went about collecting wood and resources to begin repairing damaged homes and outbuildings.

The townsfolk were grateful and offered the heroes boarding in their homes. They also tended to the poor Melkath who hadn’t venture far from the Fig’s ashes. Her head ached and she was easily exhausted from her head injury. She couldn’t help but turn over the events of the previous night in her head. She would have perished in the flaming ruin, but someone pulled her free. Her head was filled by shadowy visions. No mortal pulled her from the ruin. This she knew. Did she recognize the shadowy visage?

“You have not fully experienced mortality,” said the voice. “Your time is not yet come.”

Some plans may have higher difficulties depending. Not everything will have a +0 difficulty, but many might.

I think we have enough stuff to dictate some compels: Hachikat’s vision carries obvious complication. In Service to Higher Powers means she will believe her vision (for a FP). It’s obviously in conflict with the group’s aims.

Melkath’s Bound By Power and Rules means someone’s pulling her strings. She realizes her fate is not entirely her own. That’s probably a problem and may give rise to some sort of paranoia or recklessness in the future. It’s a bit weaksauce, but you can punch it up with some sort of here and now complication (for a FP).

Yorn’s job and the evidence of coins will potential create a complication (especially a decision-based one) when delicacy is needed. That will come in when Yorn acts on his duties in some boorish way when the time is right. Consider that compel in the chamber, but not yet fired.

You’re all acting on it, so Rebellion In the Cooking has asserted itself that Tragone is compromised and there’s a conspiracy revealed. You all get one for that.

Melkath thought the figure might have been Lugh, some infuriating visage taunting her now at her lowest point. She was already angry, this pushed her over the breaking point. When she heard her supposed "friends" who abandoned her to die had returned to the village, she rose from her bed, painful as it was to do so. She went out into the day's sun, another blinding light that nearly sent her to her knees. She fought the pain with her anger, the power of the fey gathering inside her. She thought she was just going to beat those who had abandoned her, now she knew she would make them feel a similar pain. She gathered her will, her drive, when she saw the three, and raised her hand against them to call illusionary fire, intense flames, flames that would gnaw at their sanity as they grew closer with every second. She wanted to hear their screams as she had heard her own.

Once the fey has been seated and somebody has explained everything that happened, Amedeo speaks, But worry not. We shall make Tragone pay for this evil and bring him to justice. He gets up and adds, Speaking of which, if you'd be so kind as to excuse me I shall get changed and go and find out where and when we can pay a visit to that canaglia .

Amedeo then goes to some farmer's house to quickly wash and put on plainer clothes. He dresses a nice, grey woolen coat*, a dark brown cloak and a dark blue hat.

His first stop is the local lord's aviary, where he casually checks whether he intends to go hunting any time soon and what sort of birds he will take. All throughout the morning, especially before the lord is up, he casually drops where he knows the noble's retainers might be, asks a few questions and drops a few coins.

The roll isn't particularly exceptional. Amedeo might be too stingy.

If succeeding at a cost is on the table (assuming this is a failure), might I suggest that someone recognises Amedeo and gives word to Tragone, who promptly proceeds to sending some thughs to "finish the job"?

Yorn sits by Melkath as she recuperates, slouched in a too small chair by the window. He leans into the light holding a thick book close to his face. There are little notes scribbled all over it and some circled paragraphs, mostly related to 'treason', 'judicial combat' and 'noble rights'. When Yorn retires, if he can find someone to help with the boring bits, he'll probably write a book of his own to help out the poor sods like him who had to enforce this mess. "Frassinia's Laws: How to Punch Nobles With Them". It's what he'd been looking for for years, and this old tome on dueling had been the best he could find so he'd had a compact copy scribed and took it with him wherever he went. 'Course the problem there was the writing was so bloody small. He chuckles at the memories as he thumbs through certain pages.

I'm spending a Fate Point on Lore: Law to create an advantage we can use against Tragone's law abiding followers and subjects to make them stand down.

    4dF+3 6

I'd like to make this "Trial by Combat or King", where as noblemen in good standing Amedeo and Yorn can make their accusations to Tragone and if he calls them liars (otherwise admitting guilt in this case) they can demand trial by combat or appeal to a higher authority (the king) because he himself would be judge here and in Frassinia no man may be both accused and judge in a trial.

If that doesn't work we can go for "A matter for the Minister of Coin!" which gives a royal official in the capital jurisdiction over the coin minting and technically allowing Yorn broad remit to arrest Tragone to be brought to him for trial over the accusations or just "Airtight Case" for simplicity.

EDIT: I mean I'm spending a fate point to invoke "Reeve of King Corrin's Customs" to add +2 to my Lore: Law roll, not that I'm trying to invoke the skill.

Yorn looks deeply thoughtful at Mel's declaration. He goes silent for a moment and almost reaches for his book, but eventually shrugs. If Mel needed this to deal with losing her home and livelihood he'd try to make it happen.

"However if he's sentenced to die for a capital crime we could get the body for you and if you felt up for it we could argue your Fey nobility counts. If it's that or facing me or Amedeo I doubt he'd argue the technicality. Smartest thing would be letting Amedeo do it though. In response to Amedeo's inquiry, Sir Berecchio, the landed knight with claim to the fief containing the crossroad village was apparently involved with an upcoming expedition concerning the Baron. His falconer was not shy about answering the fencing master's inquiry.

"Indeed! My lord has been invited to Tregone's annual hunting expedition. The baron's rustic lodge is nestled atop a scenic promontory overlooking the Withel on the edge of the Feralwood. I've heard its beauty is the envy of the King! I will be going along with my lord, as well as a handful of his servants. I understand a few of the Baron's other vassals will be attending as well.

"The day after the solstice," the falconer continued, "is the day of the hunt, but I doubt any will quarry will be had despite any good fortune or skill. It's said the baron and his guests get pretty deep into their cups the night before."

That was convenient, but the solstice was only three nights away. They would all have quite a march to arrive at the appointed place and time.

Little did Amedeo know that a pair of of Tregone's lackeys chanced to be within earshot inside the noisy aviary. One recognized Amedeo, knowing of his hostility toward their lord in recent weeks. The two slipped out.

Building her legend up again would be a solid first step. It had been too long since she'd put on a good performance. The harpy set herself up in the middle of the rebuilding efforts, and began to sing one of her upraising songs for the workers. Those who happened to hear her, such as any particular knights, would no doubt spread talk of her, as would the commonfolk who went to make their petitions for aid from the nearby nobles. If enough word was spread, perhaps she would find herself easily invited into the company of the opulent.

As the fellows made their plans and went about their business, Girolo, the village’s blacksmith had been elected as speaker for its folk. Of course, Melkath knew them all well by name, by the generosity of (or lack thereof) their tips, and knew virtually all their lineages and kin by memory. Before the four departed, Girolo had an unpleasant proclamation.

They had witnessed the fallen fey Baroness’s strange powers and wrath upon the return of her fellows from the forest shrine. Rumors had run amok after the display that she was somehow sinister, a witch, or something altogether else that no one understood nor wished to name. Nonetheless, the general feeling was that their newfound ill fortune was in some way (those were Girolo’s words, rather than the “most assuredly” agreed upon by those for whom he now spoke) her fault. The blacksmith veiled his normally gentle bear-cub demeanor under a rather strained hard-nosed facade when he pronounced her banishment from the community.

This is the terms of the compel, so there’s no getting out for anyone that sticks up for her. Stereo mentioned that would be something Yorn would do, but I’d like to see the proof of that.

They will appear only to her eyes in the mists, shadowing their movements in the woods. She will not be sure if the vision is real or an artifact of her concussion. We can probably find a juicy compel for Concussed with this too. I’ll think on it, and so can you!

    "Bull****."
Yorn says blankly staring at the big and hairy blacksmith. "This is the damn Cultist's fault, not Mel's! And you all know it!" He points angrily at the burned out ruins of the villagers' homes. "Anyone see her out there throwing torches with those rats? Anyone?! Come on speak up, I can't hear you." He glares at the determined but cowed villagers in disgust, but the usual force in his anger isn't present. They'd been through hard times here and were only in for harder now, his pity for them holds him back from provoking any further violence whatever his fury over Mel's mistreatment.

Girolo’s finger turned to accuse Yorn next. “We don’t need bewitched folk returning here again either,” he added with the weight of pronouncement.

Don't mind them, Yorn. Vain words born of suffering, not worth the trouble. Let's hunt some noble, Amedeo says, putting his hand on his old friend's shoulder. He starts moving towards their horses, wherever they be kept after The Fig's fire.

Yorn meets Girolo's eyes challenge for a moment, but it passes when Amedeo speaks. "Fine," he allows, following after his friend and readying Sarnor for the ride. "It's their loss!" He says over his shoulder, too loudly to be aimed at Amedeo but no-one dares talk back to him when he makes his way out of the village.

They pass out of the ruined village into the dry and barren lands beyond. The drought had been hard here, small ditches that were once streams ran along the sides of the road and tinder dry shrubs were the most growth Yorn could see about them. It wasn't anything like his family's little estate back in the homelands. The blights had him them of course, nowhere was safe, but by the banks of the Bolsena no-one wanted for water at least. These people had it worse than most and it was only going to get worse for them. He lets out a tired sigh as he looks over the devastation that had been done here. He rides silently for a time trying to think of what to say.

"Any idea what you're going to do after we nail that traitor, Mel? You know you're always welcome with us, right?" He asks awkwardly, wishing for a drink right about now.

Amedeo walks up to his palfrey, Ombra, and pats her neck. Who's a good girl? Yes, you are! Well, we're no executioners, but we've done fair bit of killing lately. I don't have much taste for needless suffering, though. The fencing master says, casually. He jumps onto his steed and from there looks at his companions again. We had better hasten to the hunting lodge, lest our friends becomes impatient and decides not to wait for us. Should Tragone opt for accepting a challenge, do you want to do the honours, Melkath, or shall I?

With their plans finalized, Yorn, Melkath, and Amedeo parted ways with Hachikat, who had left somewhat earlier to set herself up at the hunting lodge. The harpy gave enough instructions that Gianluca was self-sufficient enough to tend the re-consecrated shrine in her absence. The new sense of purpose had made a remarkable change in the reluctant cultist, but some past darkness still hovered over him.

With the virtuoso came Massimo and Targoni, whose ways aligned for the moment, as well as a small number of followers that flocked to her after hearing her song. The going was in pleasant company, with Massimo filling any empty moment with verse and story. The weather was oppressive and dry. Most of the deciduous trees had dropped dry leaves early, looking rather bleak for early summer. Within the desired time, Hachikat parted with Massimo and Targoni and ascended into the alpine bluffs of the Feral Vale toward Lord Tregone's lodge with the remainder of her small entourage.

Birds of prey soared above. The trail split the tall dry grasses toward a modest bridge of stone crossing the Withel, which should have been frothing up to its banks but was instead an easily forded muddy stream. Two men waited at the bridge. By their look, they were bannermen of Tregone's house, perhaps stationed to greet their intended guests and likely help carry any goods up the steep sided cliff road that needed extra portage.

The first of these, an unpleasant ruffian chewing a blade of grass challenged Hachikat. "Halt!" he said abruptly. "These are the lord's lands, and none pass without his leave." His friend snickered with barely contained amusement.

    * * * * *

Giving Hachikat a head start, the others followed some distance behind on horseback. The dry ground made for slow going with fewer places to water their horses. It was still a good trek forward to the Vale. On their second day out, the desolation was palpable. But they weren't entirely alone.

Several hundred yards behind -- almost always out of sight or behind a bend -- four dark shapes of riders shadowed the three.

Scene 5 here is split between what the three travelers are doing (Mel, Yorn, Amedeo), and Hachikat with her entourage. I'm splitting my fate points accordingly.

Hachikat can assume her challengers are little more than Average (+1) nameless Toughs with modest skill in Physique and Provoke.

For the others, if you want to get a third steed for Mel, one of you can make a Wealth roll and we can retcon the results. If not, I'm assuming she's riding with either Yorn (likely) or Amedeo.

"I have to agree with Amedeo, but it seems you'll be having your chance today Mel. Just remember to accuse him first, then it's legal. Unless he surrenders, I suppose, but then we bring him to court with all the proof we've got and his majesty takes his head. Ask nicely and he might let you have the honors." Yorn mutters, thinking the plan through in his head, slightly troubled by the Fey's attitude but chalking it up to her ethereal weirdness for now.

"Of course, if we do get a nice clean judicial execution out of this that means his estate's forfeit don't it?" He looks conspiratorially to Amedeo. "Of course, the revenue and the king will see it's properly disposed of, but in the meantime..." no-one would miss some requisitioned supplies. A few spare horses, supplies for the road, and all the booze Yorn could carry off with him. Good stuff too.

Assuming the rat b*****d hadn't just gone and spiked everything with baby's blood or some other madness. The Cults did that sort of thing, probably just to spite him.

I initially thought we'd know about the riders behind us, so I had a plan to ambush them from around a blind bend by rolling a fallen tree trunk down on them like Ewoks fighting the Empire. However it's not stated we know they're there, so here's the roll for posterity's sake.

Melee with my Bloody Experience Stunt 4dF+6 6 to create the advantage 'Uphill Tree Trunks' for use against these nere-do-wells.

I also roll Spot +1 5 so... yeah. I'll wait for the next update to see how that resolves against their Stealth, but I'm pretty confident.

    Yorn

Dressed Stab Wound [moderate] — clears Scene 7

Yorn spots their pursuers instantly, alerting his companions, taking their measure with careful backward glances as they rounded corners and watching the land they passed through like a hawk for further signs of ambush. When none came his mind began to turn to planning his own.

He frowns at the miserable hillock Amedeo points to. Perhaps for archers, on foot mind, the scrubbily wooded rise by the roadside would make a good spot. For mounted swordsmen? Or a lightly armed Fey? It offered a chance to seize surprise but little else. "No, carry on around this bend then off the horses. I like the look of that tree there." Yorn decides. It'd be a bit of a climb up, but the dried out trunk was leaning heavily down towards the road and the sharp turn would provide them an excellent spot to stage an ambush from out of sight.

"I'll climb up and knock that trunk onto them as they pass the bend, you hide behind the rocks, then the two of you can jump them while they're falling off their horses." He gruffly explains his plan, without pointing for once. "I'm sure you can handle four roughs with that little edge, Amedeo, but just in case could you back him up Mel? Put yourselves under glamor until you hear me tossing the trunk, maybe. They'll be lookin' up at where the log came from so you should be able to come at them from nowhere if this goes well."

He rubs his beard wryly. "And don't feel you need to grab one of their horses either. You're always welcome on Sarnor!"

    --

If the plan's settled Yorn left Sarnor loose below and clambered up the rocky slope, trusting the beast not to run off too far. He crawled along the shrubby treeline above and watched for the approaching riders. As they near the bend he stands behind the trunk and pushes.

It doesn't move. He puts more weight behind it. It creaks but barely budges, and the riders are nearly under him now. Annoyed he takes a step back and takes a run at it. The tree finally goes, crashing down over the edge onto the unsuspecting traitors below. Probably. Yorn can't actually see anything but dirt right now.

He spits some out and stumbles back to his feet, glad Hachikat wasn't around to immortalise that particular moment in song.

I'll take the Spot Boost as 'Blind Bend' applicable for either Stealth or Surprise Attack.

I think the way this is narrated a Might Attack makes the most sense because Yorn's pushing a heavy object down onto the enemy.

    Might Attack 4dF+3 0

That's so bad I spend a FP on Sucker Punches Cultists to reroll.

    Might Attack II 4dF+3 1

I'll just take that and spend my two invokes for a 5 point Attack against the group.

The log tumbled and scattered the men, throwing three of them and sending their horses away in terror. The fourth managed somehow to keep his seat and ride clear of the worst. This one was the dark-clad fellow that had watched the four inside the Fig that fateful night of the fires.

The man snarled and met Amedeo's excellently-timed thrust with a barely fast enough parry. The man's momentum carried him past the fencing master. With his passing came a counter slice to the tack holding Amedeo's saddle. One of the unhorsed riders leapt in front of Amedeo simultaneously, lunging for the reigns.

"Lord Targone sends his best!" the man rejoined.

In the meanwhile, the two others got to their feet and charged up the hill toward Yorn.

    Amedeo (Fate: 4)

Amedeo falls off his horse, but manages to fall on his fit and quickly steps beside Ombra. Well, I must say I find his best rather disappointing, he comments casually.

The fencing master quickly grabs his sword by the pointy end and, using his horse to hide his attack, shoves the hilt onto the dark-clad thug's face with a high blow.

Okay, the first defence doesn't go so well.
    Defend against Unseated: 4dF -2 +1 = -1

The second one doesn't go any better
    Defend against Hedged in: 4dF -2 +1 = -1
So I am going to invoke Dismounted Rider for a reroll:
    Invoke aspect to get a reroll: 4dF 1 +1 = 2
Now this becomes a success, which means that I am getting the free invoke, right? If so, since Amedeo has been Unseated, maybe we can rename Hedged In to Behind a Horse, so the horse offers some cover? Also, if the thug invokes anything to change the result, I will use the other free invoke on Dismounted Rider as well.

Well, finally I'm getting some love from the dice!
    Melee to attack mounted thug: 4dF 2 +4 = 6
If I need to, I will invoke Amedeo's Renowned Fencing Master to add another +2. And if I do get the free invoke on the aspect the other thug was trying to make, I will also use it here for a total of +10 if I need to.
