    Rolling for no particular reason...

Enemy Initiative (1d20)[6] vs Party Initiative (1d20)[13]

Oh, just in case you all didn't know, Side Initiative does not factor in Dexterity modifiers (I can explain why if you all would like, but it is too complex for me to go into easily). If any of your characters have a feature which grants bonuses to initiative, we can talk about getting you some compensatory feature for that.

No, but the enemies are trying to attack the party. Unfortunately, they where noticed before they could sneak up (not that it would have worked anyway, due to Sonderholme's sword, but they didn't know that), and they where apparently too slow on the draw to make the first move.

The only official rule regarding natural ones' in 5e is that if that if they are rolled for an attack roll, the attack always misses, even if the result of the roll would be high enough to hit the target. Nothing else special happens; no dropping weapons or anything of the like. This rule does not even apply to Saving Throws or Ability Checks, and a check can still succeed if a nat 1 is rolled and the bonuses are high enough. "crit fails" are a great deal less significant than they where in previous editions or in other games.

I don't really have any special homebrewed rules regarding critical failures. I just stick to it as it was stated in the core rules. Nothing extra happens except for guaranteed failure.

(*Requilac speaking to himself*) Oh come on, the grappling will not make the encounter that much harder because it is so unlikely to happen. Both talon attacks need to hit first, and it still then needs to succeed on a grapple check: any night-gaunt would have to succeed on 3 different checks just to get the grapple through. And it's bonuses to the attack and grapple check aren't high enough to even ensure a 50% chance of success against most enemies. Given its low HP and minimal defenses, etc., it probably will not even survive long enough to get a grapple in. It will be fine...

Later when 2/3 of the Night-Gaunts manage to successfully grapple their targets and deal an amount of damage immensely larger than average.

... I smell a lot of frantic eldritch blasts in the nearby future.

From August 1st to August 17th I will be on a business trip, and my posting rate during that time may be greatly reduced and inconsistent. It is possible that I could still post about once every 48 hours, but I wouldn't rely on that. For the time being, any expectation about the posting rate of players will be suspended. I will not start a new combat round until I see that everybody has acted, and even then it may take me some days to respond. I would rather not establish a hiatus for this long so early on, so unless I say otherwise assume that the adventure is still "active", but just moving at turtle pace. I am sorry for any inconveniences caused by this.

The visions are just a wild attempt by me to link all of your character's backstories together in as coherent a manner as possible. They are blatantly visions of the past, which are somehow getting evoked into the character's memories once they are on the island. Through the course of the campaign, your characters will recieve more visions, and eventually they will get a semicomplete narrative of the events leading up to this point and how each character is related. They don't really serve a purpose which is immediately relevant to the main plot except as a kind of backstory for it. It is not necessary for you all to read them if you don't want to, it's just something I thought would be interesting.

If you all have clever plan you would like your characters to perform to find their way around this place, then please bring that up. But if none of you really feel like you know what to do, then Crynirad will give the party some blatant plot hooks to follow. I have found that setting up clear plot hooks is usually better as it prevents gridlock and stagnation (which I have seen happen quite a bit when I DM and don't establish a direction), but I decided it would be best to not push you all in a direction if you could direct yourselves. Either method could work out well here on yall's part.

Which characters are following Valafar's advice and going out to look for water? You will soon learn why it is important for me to know this. Until that is settled, please nobody roll for the hit die regained on the short rest until the rest is actually over.

Just to clarify something, in this particular world I will make it so that that there are objective and identifiable signs which clearly identify whether someone is lying or not, and these can be recognized by others. In real life analyzing someone's nervous reactions is an immensely unreliable way to tell if they are lying or not, and really hasn't help up to muster with scientific investigation. There are just too many different reasons why someone could be showing a sign that is commonly considered to show that someone is lying to assume that they are truly accurate signs. The description of the insight skill though in 5e seems to indicate that its usefulness relies on the assumption that lie detection is actually effective in the world, so I will break from reality a little there. I know you probably all assumed this, but I felt like it should be made clear to avoid confusion.
