Encounter N: King Neptune's Merciless Wrath; Round 2

The furious tides pull back once again, and drag the majority of the surviving sailors with them into the Seas of Oriab, to be feasted upon by the foul creatures which dwell there in darkness. The storm proves itself to not be nearly as intelligent as you assumed it to be though, because it doesn't actually bother to change its tactics in order to circumvent the defenses of its prey. Although the current does indeed pull, Lomax and Greenbrook standing far atop the rocks, and Sonderholme who is already beyond its grasp, feel none of its effects. The evil seas do try to engulf Valafar, and do knock him back ever so slightly, but the rope tether prevents him from going back to far.

Beiwarin and Nauta though are not so lucky, as the water does indeed shove them backward. Both of them where able to run far enough and quick enough though that they are not pulled so far back as to have gone into the depths. Still, you can feel that the sea is still tugging at you all.

Beiwarin by default takes no action and just moves 15 feet forward. Beiwarin and Nauta are pushed back 20 feet.

When the ship collapsed and few splinters everywhere, blood then flowed into the water from the people who where struck. Streams of crimson fluid which rapidly expand and bloat can be obviously seen in the water, but you don't quite have the time to focus on them. Unfortunately, something else though has become far more interested in the bloody water than you.

A horrid amalgamation of piranha and shark features (I will let your imagination sort out what a piranha-shark hybrid looks like) jumps out of the water and launches itself at Valafar's leg. It immediately regrets that decision though as its teeth snap solid ice covered in frigid spikes. It's maw slides down Valafar's legs, more spikes piercing through its gum as it does this. Immediately the shark rethinks its decision and pivots itself to run away, spines of ice still stuck through its oversized mouth.

After his mad dash, Zuu Greenbrook takes a second or two to catch his breath. He looks back to see how the others are doing, and immediately wishes he hadn't. Such was the horrible visage of that fish which has no right to call itself a fish.

Fortunately, Valafar had on him the Armor of Agathys, which in all likelihood saved his life. Not particularly wishing to see the death of one of his fellow warlocks, for Zuu has yet to pick his mind clean regarding how he dealt with his patron, the half-elf sends a concussive sickly-green blast towards the creature, before clambering to shore beside Sonderholme.

Up on the rock, Ulysses takes advantage of the relative peace to pull out his grappling hook and rope. There were people already at the shore - wasn't magic an incredibly interesting and useful thing? Hopefully, they were inclined to help. His voice rises over the wind as he uses the weight of the grapple to throw one end of the rope to the others general vicinity on the beach.
    "PULL THE ROPE!"
Then with crowbar still in his hand, makes an attempt to leap to the next stones to his northeast, gripping the rope with the hope they'll help him.
The moon sees nothing of this. She is bald and wild.
And the message of the yew tree is blackness - blackness and silence.

Sonderholme appears upon the shores as a vaguely humanoid shape of blackened seawater, the liquid promptly congealing into that of her natural form as her spell fades away. As she fully regains corporeality, she gasps, as shocked and surprised by the results of her prayer as she was by the fact that she had somehow survived the destruction.

Hardly able to think, she spends the next few seconds violently coughing up seawater and crawling forward, away from the shore. "Gods, oh gods..."

Valafar eyes the bleeding shark creature but otherwise ignores it, sides it seems someone else was already shooting at the thing. Instead, now that he was anchored to the rocks he swam as fast he could around the rocks. Water churning around him, he thanked whoever had enchanted him with water breathing that his frozen aura was probably the only reason he was currently alive.

Encounter N: King Neptune's Merciless Wrath; Round 3

The tides push Nauta and Valafar 20 feet back. Nauta and Valafar both take 2 damage from being pushed against the rocks. The rocks which Valafar hit crack upon impact with the Armor of Agathys.

The Piranha Shark pounds away from the area, its blood now joining the red water it was so attracted too. It manages to overpower the tide with its hydrodynamic body built for such a purpose. The beast fades away into the depths, and eventually goes far beyond your sight.

You knew that the wind was strong around here, but you seen begin to realize that it may have been even stronger than you expected. Lomax can hear the ghostly moan of some creature penetrating through the wind, which must mean that it can't be more than a few feet away. He rapidly turns around to discover that a whale is being tumbled through the air, and being tossed directly at you. With much surprise Lomax drops to the rocks on its stomach as the goliath beast flies directly over him, and drops like a meteor onto the ground not far in front of him. Its tail catches in the rocks, causing its body to swing until its head lands on the ground right in front of Sonderholme.

    Lomax avoids the whale.

"Wauuuuugh!" Zuu squawks as the biggest fish he's ever seen is just about flung itself at the shore, narrowly hitting him. Was it the fiend's doing, as retribution for his attempt to get the heck out of Dodge? Could the fiend be this powerful such as to physically manifest its powers? Why target everyone in that case? Could it be this callous?

No, that can't be right. If his patron could affect the plane to this degree, it wouldn't need to operate through warlocks. It wouldn't make sense to empower mortals like himself who would not necessarily do what it wanted.

    Would it?

Regardless that creature has got to go, and so the warlock repositions himself into an angle that would allow for the whale to be pushed aside, rather than pushed back and possibly taking more survivors with it.

Now, everybody except for Lomax has made it to the shore. Seemingly enraged that it's last remaining prey is coming so close to the shore, the ocean desperately breathes in and attempts to consume Lomax with the tides. But he is holding onto a rope thrown by one of his allies though, and desperately holds onto it in an attempt to resist the current. Although he is not especially strong, the tiefling is desperate and fueled by adrenaline, so manages to keep his grip on the ropes.

Due to the fact that he is holding onto the rope, Lomax is allowed to make a check to resist the pushing of the water. He succeed and is not pushed back.

Lomax seems somewhat surprised by how sturdy his nimble but relatively weak where able to stay stationary. It's not until he tries to step forward that he realizes he may have had some help he didn't know about. Though Lomax tries to lift his leg, he cannot. He looks down and sees that he has snapped through an eggshell of some sort. A slimy, baby plesiosaurus is lying in the ruins of the eggshell, and now the disturbed hatchling is biting into his leg and latching on, seemingly refusing to let go.

Lomax is grappled by the Baby Plesiosaurus. While grappled in this way, he is restrained.

Now that some of you are out of the danger, you have begun to process things around you more thoroughly. And the most apparent thing many of you notice is that you are all covered in a weird rust colored algae. It has clung to your clothing and skin, and reeks the foul scent of moldy, rotting fish, with an unexpected metallic hint. Some of the blight has mixed with the seawater and is running down your throat, causing you to gag.

Out of the corner of your eye you can see that about half a dozen or so figures are slowly slinking behind the rocks on the beach and coming closer to your group. You can't tell much in the darkness and rain, but they do appear to be roughly human in size and proportion, and are seemingly armed with polearms. Events are happening too quickly for you to gather much more information about them. You don't know whether these people are hostile or not, but the fact that they are taking so many pains to be stealthy, and that they are armed, does concern you.

Though in the midst of a coughing fit, Roland's words registered with the paranoid warlock. Alas, try as he might, the not-perceptive half elf could not see anything, not even when looking at the direction the man was pointing at.

Reading an attack action, and changing bow into a great sword.

As Greebrook's light takes flight across the rocks, it gives you a glimpse of the humanoid mockeries and some of the strangeness of their forms. It's too quick to pick up much detail, but it is apparent that there are five human sized things approaching you in a file, with a more massive gorilla sized creature following behind them.

The relatively smaller people closely resemble humanoids, but the way the light glints off their skin indicates that they must have scales. Their body proportions aren't too abnormal, but their heads and all the features on them do appear oversized, but it is difficult to tell the extent of their deformities in this short a time. Each of them is armed with a one handed trident and smaller version of a legionnaire's shield, both of which are made out of what looks to be a material similar to gold, but more white in color and less lustrous.

The bigger creature though is far more obvious in its oddities. It's proportions seem to be that of an immense gorilla, and with it's monolithic arms and legs tipped with sickle like claws, you know that it's strength would be more than enough to kill five, if not ten, people within seconds. It's head is unlike any you have seen before, as it looks like the maw of a lamprey must have been grafted in between the jaws of a gorilla. Oversied red frills flap madly as the weird thing looks from behind its soldiers.

Your mind jumped to the conclusion that the large monster must have been something closer to a giant beast than a man, but you are quite clearly contradicted. Quickly noticing that it's group has lost the element of surprise, it unleashes a piercing whistle through its lamprey's maw, and upon hearing it your head aches. Soon you feel an odd flurry of emotions flitting about in your head, and you swear that they can't be your own. Indistinct whispers follow with it, and you also can't help but feel that they aren't your own. That thing must be doing something with its whistle.

When the light goes over them, the fishlike legionnaires are seemingly shocked that they where noticed, and seize their movements in shock. The ogrelike thing's whistle spurs them on to action though, and they charge forward with their tridents at the ready. Somehow, the moment the whistle sounded they automatically regained their confidence to charge, somehow being able to perfectly know how to not trip over each other. While you where ached by the whistle, they seemed to be energized by it.

Unfortunately though, the immense abomination did not bring up the call soon enough. It's troops hesitated before charging, standing like deer in headlights. It was only for a few seconds, but it was a few seconds too late.

    Encounter A: Beyond Devil's Reef; Round 1

The party has won initiative against the fishfolke, and may act first.

Nauta, you are about to act, when you come to a shocking realization. These creatures are the same ones that already killed you. Although that was in a dream, it was also a prophecy of the future: You know you will die here. In fact, you have already suffered the fatal wound. You must have acted too late, so one of the creature's tridents has already come into your skull. You are not dead yet, but there is no surviving a hemorrhage in the brain like that. You will not survive this fight, and now your fate is sealed: you will die here.

Nauta is affected by the Despair affect of a Portentious Nightmare. For the duration of the effect, he has disadvantage on all ability checks, attack rolls, and saving throws, and his speed is halved. At the end of every turn he may remake the DC 13 Charisma saving throw, ending all of the effects on a success. For as long the effect persists, he is under a delusion that he has already suffered a fatal wound, and will experience tactile hallucinations that confirm this this belief in his mind.

Finally seeing the creatures, the terrified half-elf squeaks out a "WAAAAAUGH!". Almost autonomously, his hand slips into the component pouch again, as he takes a small (stinky) piece of bat excrement, rubs it into a ball, and combines it with a yellowish powder. Pinching the ball with his middle finger and thumb, he points at the biggest enemy that he can see, and intones a word of power.

A bright streak consumes the ball and rushes to a point right behind the Hive Lord, before a gout of flame explodes violently, enveloping all of the creatures in its wake!

Zuu takes the opportunity to relocate while the enemies' ears ring from the explosion.

    Spoiler

Action. Cast Fireball at Level 4, centered behind the Hive Lord (the 20-foot radius hits all enemies but no allies). All foes must succeed on a DC 16 DEX save or suffer (10d6)[35] fire damage (save halves).

Hivelord. (d20+3)[21]. Succeeds. 17 damage. 76 HP left.
Indigo. (d20+3)[4]. Fails. 35 damage. 10 HP left.
Cerulean. (d20+3)[20]. Succeeds. 17 damage. 28 HP left.
Taupe. (d20+3)[13]. Fails. 35 damage. 10 HP left.
Umber. (d20+3)[16]. Fails (should have been d20+2). 35 damage. 10 HP left.
Raisin. (d20+3)[14]. Fails. 35 damage. 10 HP left.

Valafar jogged forward to join the battle, his eye glowed for a moment as his patron overtook his senses with a very potent vision. He curses under his breath and swings with the flat of his sword intending to knock out his foe as opposed to killing them.

Freed of the creature and the waters, Ulysses finds himself looking up into a scene of quickly evolving chaos, flame and light illuminating his shipmates fighting what look to be a series of fishmen. More simplicity. At least it made more sense than the sea. And the whale. He draws his long blade, a thin dueling sword, slipping deftly between those hanging back, then slipping around the rock to the south and leaping through the floating lights, hoping to surprise one of the fishmen. His shadow peels unnaturally against the light, still connected to him, but long fingers grasping at the second nearby enemy.

Roland stares incredulously at the blood coating his hand. Barely staying upright against the pain, he rushes towards the fishmen. If he's going to die, he'll at least try to take one of them with him. His blade and fists storm at the raisin colored fish, despite the gaping wound in his head. "You've... killed me! I'll kill you!" he roars loudly, though it seems feeble to him. His strikes are wild and uncontrolled, not likely to do much injury, blinded as he is by the blood in his eyes.

    Encounter A: Beyond Devil's Reef; Round 2

After being scorched by an explosive bolt of fire and rapidly being stabbed afterwards, the Umber and and Raisin colored fishfolke are obviously shocked. You all feel another migraine come on as more indistinct voices swirl around your head, and they seem rather distressed. Noticing that they are already on the verge of death against impossible odds, the two of them pivot away from their charge to run away. They attempt to slip away in the rocks, hoping that constant movement and the camouflage of their scales will protect them.

The Umber and Raisin Fishfolk disengage and move 30 feet to the south. Characters with a Passive Perception or Investigation higher than 14 can distinguish them from them the rocks around them, and are then able to target the fleeing enemies. They are both 30 feet away, 10 feet apart from each other, and have half cover from the rocks.

As soon as they clear the way, the ogreish monsters turns its mawed head and soulless black eyes on Lomax, who dared to be the closest to it. You all expect it extend its hideous neck and snap lomax in its jaws, which it appears to be close enough to do, but instead it just focuses its gaze on his eyes. Immediately Lomax's mind is overwhelmed with a cacophany of alien noise and indistinct murmurs that he can hardly process. He is unable to gather his thoughts to do anything but stand their stricken as he reels in surprise as to what is going on.

The Cerulean fishfolk takes advantage of the situation, and charges towards the paralyzed Lomax. As he is unable to to deal with this much stimuli at once, he hardly is able to understand that the being is attacking him. The trident strikes true into his abdomen, but his leather armor stops the polearm from gaining enough momentum to pierce beyond the flesh (which it did tear) to his intestines or other vital organs. Not that Lomax is even really able to tell that he has been struck though, distracted as he is.

The Hivelord casts Hold Person on Lomax, and he fails the saving throw. The Cerulean Fishfolke then strikes him with a critical hit on its trident, dealing 17 damage.

It is now your turns. Follow this link to see the post containing the page which shows the statistics for this encounter, which are actively updated every action a character takes.

"Be quiet, can't you see I'm busy?" Zuu shouts out, addressing of course the devil that just whispered in his mind. The sea voyage had afforded him respite from the constant needling and admonitions; only now does the warlock realize distance may not work on an extraplanar entity.

The big lug had just done something to Lomax, who looked as stiff as a board, doing nothing at all to defend himself. But while Zuu doesn't know the exact magic that was cast, he knows a concentrating spellcaster when he sees one, and swiftly slashes towards its direction with his pact rod.

The bejeweled rod flashes, and a pair of sickly green concussive bolts wing their way towards the monstrosity. Unfortunately Zuu was rather distracted by his patron, and neither beam impacted the creature.

Paralyzed by fear and overwhelmed by the sheer chaos of the situation before her, Sonderholme spends several seconds simply grimacing, raising her hands to her ears and shutting her eyes in an attempt to lessen the intensity of her overstimulation. She lets out a panicked scream before stumbling towards a nearby collection of rocks and crags, lowering a hand from the side of her head to brace against the boulder.

After crouching down slightly and breathing hard for a second or so, she attempts to shake the voices out of her head, only managing to worsen her encroaching headache.

    --

Poking out and over the crag, Sonderholme notices the largest of the creatures lumbering forward and panics, shouting out into the wind. "Go away! Leave us alone!" Immediately afterwards, seemingly trigged by her fear and fury, a bolt of eerie, brackish water with the consistency of ink blasts forward.

Actions: Hex as Bonus Action (Targeting STR), Eldritch Blast.

Valafar sighed as his foe was knocked unconscious he moved on to the next, a roll a leap and he found himself in front of the hive lord. However, he chose to strike the only still fighting Fishman for whatever reason his patron didn't want these creatures to die so again as he swung his blade he turned to the flat of it to do as little harm as possible.
