Re: Warrington Woes
Stu
Silence implying consent, Stu bundles up the half of the gnoll that's likely to be doing the talking, and uses the rope from his pack to secure it to Strennr's horse. He then slings the dead gnome over his own saddlebags, using the gnome's own belt to hold him in place as needed.
There was a defensible spot a couple hills back. If Atherin thinks it's a good site to stop, I say we go back there to regroup."We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." Kurt Vonnegut

Fantastic Felix
Felix nods. He briefly considers the morality of talking to the dead, but shrugs.
"That was exciting," he says off-handedly. "I'm curious what our friend has to say as well."

Re: Warrington Woes
Approximately a half hour after the battle, Atherin leads you into a clearing well off the road. You cannot see the road, and assume no one can see you from it. The foliage is extra thick except for where Atherin cut a way in, on the edge way from the road.
The clearing is approximately 40ft in diameter and has a generally circular shape. The time is approaching mid afternoon.NOTE

Stu
Sighing, Stu nods to Jas, and walks over to Strennr. Taps him on the forehead.
I should be up for guard duty tonight, Jas. Assuming...
He stares down at Strennr again.
So, Strennr? Remember back there, when everyone else risked their asses saving you?
He glances significantly down at the bleeding gashes in his chest and abdomen.

Strennr
Strennr glared at the orc, looking annoyed as he rubbed at the spot where he was tapped. "Of course, I guess that means I'm in your debt. Well, maybe it won't be for too long." Strennr held his hand over Stu's wounds and channled his healing magic into him.

The big orc nods in what will have to pass for appreciation, and moves to start gathering a store of wood for Jas' fire. When he's finished, he lingers for a moment by its warmth, and looks out into the gathering darkness.

Re: Warrington Woes
Strennr
Strennr approached the dead gnome and sat down cross legged beside it. Resting his chin in his hand, he pondered the events of today and what the gnome had said before he died. "Hmm... what do you know? Well, I guess we shall soon find out." Standing up, he held his arms outstretched at his sides and closed his eyes, one hand clutching his holy symbol. Smoothly bringing his empty hand in front of him, he began making the magical signs to breathe temporary life into the body. He also started chanting in a low, steady monotone. The air around the gnome's body grew chill has the necromantic power took hold.
EDIT:
Suddenly the chanting ended, Strennr having finished the spell. The temperature returned to normal around the body, a fine mist dissipating on the breeze. He let his arms hang down at his side, and then turned to look at the others. "It is done. All that remains is to ask the questions." He crouched down next to the body and spoke to it. "Who are the enemy patrols working for?"Last edited by Ghal Marak; 2007-12-04 at 05:44 PM.

Re: Warrington Woes
The gnomes eyes open, but they stare blankly at nothing. The gaze of death still upon them. His mouth opens, yet the lips remain still as a ghostly voice comes from it. "I don't know the name. I only saw him from a distance. Half man, half lizard. Power to control all.........."

Re: Warrington Woes
The gnome responds in the same ghostly voice, lips still unmoving, "I do not know. The gnoll that speared me is from the same group that attacked my party." As it finishes speaking a gasp of air escapes the gnomes mouth and the eyes drift closed.

Re: Warrington Woes
Stu
As the spell ends, Stu slowly releases his breath - not having even known he was holding it.
I say we search him, then give the little guy a decent burial. Maybe Strennr can talk with the dog-man in the morning?
He hikes his thumb to the top half of the gnoll. If none object, he'll get out a shovel, step about 40' away from the camp, and start to dig."We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." Kurt Vonnegut

Re: Warrington Woes
Strennr
Strennr cursed in the elven tongue. "I had hoped that he would know more about the patrols. Though I cannot say I wasn't expecting this." He looked up, too distracted to accurately hear what Stu had said. "What? Oh, of course. Bury him." Strennr crossed his arms and paced the campsite, mulling over the significance of what the gnome had said. From time to time he would stop and glance over at the halved gnoll, then resume his pacing muttering something about spells.

Atherin
The ranger shivers as the necromancy dissipates. The dead aren't meant to talk... It's unnatural.
"Not quite true, Jas. We know the enemy patrols are led by... by a 'half-man, half-lizard' with 'the power to control all'." He pauses uncertainly. "Do we know of any omnipotent half-lizards?"

Re: Warrington Woes
Stu
The hole required for such a small one is not onorous, even in such soil, and Stu quickly has the hole dug. He nods at Jas' comment.
Yes. I remember my tribe fighting a band of skinny lizards for ownership of a cave. Skin like nails. Stank like death. Nasty.
He roughly and dispassionately strips anything of possible value from the gnome's body before carrying him to the hole.

Re: Warrington Woes
There is a bit of jewelery, you estimate it at being worth 2000gp total. He also had about 1 days supply of trail rations, perhaps the reason he originally attacked the hawk.
As you dump the body into the grave, night is falling and it is quite dark as you finish filling the hole. The campfire provides a warm glow as you gather around it discussing the days events.

Stu lifts the bit of gaudy from the gnome and shows it to the others before tucking it away.
Spoils of war, I say. We can see how to split it when we're done.
He lays the gnome gently in the earth and starts to pile the loose dirt back on top. When done, he steps back.

The orc nods at the man's question.
Yes, Jas. It will give me time to think.
He glances over at Strennr, challenging the elf to dispute the fact that the big orc might, in fact, think.
With that archer getting away, they know that we're here. And that we're good enough to take down that dog-man. Maybe in the morning - we talk about whether this changes what we do next."We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be." Kurt Vonnegut

Re: Warrington Woes
Strennr
Strennr stopped his pacing and looked up at Stu. "Yes... in the morning I believe I will have an answer, at least to one of our problems." With that he unfurled his bedroll. He sat cross-legged on the bedroll and closed his eyes. He didn't enter trance immediately, but instead traced the lines in his holy symbol and planned for tomorrow.

Looking for something to do, the ranger goes to his old companion Stu, and offers to check over the valuables gathered from the gnome and the gnoll for signs of magic before he turns in for the night.
With a yawn, Atherin reluctantly finds a place to trance, his animals settling around him again.

Re: Warrington Woes
The day dawns bright and clear. Birds sound in the trees surrounding the clearing. The stench of the nearly day old gnoll corpse only now begins to tickle your nostrils. Nothing unusual occurred during the night. Stu heard some rustling from the bushes early in the night, but did not raise the alarm when investigation revealed no visible enemy. Atherin finds some deer tracks in the area as dawn breaks.

Strennr
Strennr arose from his meditation and packed up his bedroll quietly. He clasped his hands together and quickly performed his morning prayer. With that out of the way, he walked over to the dead Gnoll body and stared at it briefly, then turned away from it and waited for everybody else to rouse from their slumber.
