Very interesting that apparently the rest of the game could theoretically be done without your gear. Wonder if there's a cheevo for it.

I think you get some basic gear back in a bit. But at the least its for the rest of this mission. Also word choices...

There's an achievement called "Mostly Flesh and Steel" which you get for finishing the game without purchasing any supernatural powers other than Blink, but I've not heard of one for completing the game with no gear!

The wiki doesn't say anything about achievements for completing the game with no gear. Style points though!

Also, I was totally thinking that that whale oil running down the street was hagfish slime at first.

Back in the saddle again, if only to post this and vanish into the aether again for at least a few days.

    Zodi Plays: Dishonored [27] Whalers

    Video Length: 29:24

In today's episode of Dishonored, we can finally take the fight to Daud given that we've got all our stuff back finally. We'll be infiltrating his base and beating up all his fancy, whale powered assassins, and perhaps giving Daud a bit of a spook. Perhaps. The Whalers, as they're called, are rather interesting enemies. At range they only have crossbows, rapid-fire but also rather piddly damage. They're not all that dangerous. From melee however they're kinda scary, given how good they are at swordplay and their Pull magic that mostly disables us. As with most enemies, the best way to deal with them is to just not. Another enemy type in this area, though we only see a bit of it, are the Wolfhounds. Fun fact about this; in the kennel area of our first mission, if we kill all those dogs there, Daud won't have any dogs here. He liberated them, ad you can find a message in game saying as such. Cool!

In Daud's home base itself, there's a couple of really good areas that I only slightly touched on, which is one of the unfortunate parts of a blind playthrough; messing up real cool set pieces. The first of these that I'm aware of is the sneaking area, where one of the Whaler's is teaching another how to move without being seen in a rather direct and cool reference to Thief. This game never quite plays with shadows the way thief does, except for this one area, and it's cool. The second set piece I mess up is, unfortunately, the Daud situation.

With Daud, the intent is that your fight with him is NOT lethal. Once you beat him you can spare him or not. I of course, not knowing this, think I screwed up and would have to kill him if we fought, so I just kinda ran my silly ass away. So it goes, sadly. Daud himself is actually a pretty cool character, an assassin who is not so much looking to REPENT as he is feeling bad about the fact that some of the people he killed might have actually been good. It's fascinating, and I imagine it's explored more in Daudhonoured: Knife of Brigwall.

The last minor thing I mess up is understand just how debilitating it is to have someone possess you, leading to an... unfortunate situation. Ah well, such is life (and it's taking). I hope you all enjoyed, next time we uh... we have a fun time. Hope you all enjoyed, I'll see you then.

You'd think the overseers would have antimagic music when coming here. But, I guess they're still assassin-y enough.

    Oh, good. Nonletha- oh.

Well, given how alert and attentive these guys are, you're definitely doing good.
Surprised at how many magic assassins there are.

Alas. Posessing the guy to get him away was a neat idea, but outsider magic not working for Daud… definitely an ouch.

What I want to know is when Corvo gets the power to have his voice heard at a consistent volume no matter how far away from him you are. Now that's some real magic.

Tbh if I didn't know he was voiced in Dishonored 2, I would have played with the thought that he was actually mute for some reason, would be appropriate in the industrial-gothic theme of the game.

You know, I wasn't expecting you to get it, but I kinda hoped you would be awesome and trip over the alternate 'elimination' of Daud. Then again that requires getting through the entire mission without being seen by, or IIRC touching, a single whaler.

It's time for a new A Taste Of finally!!

    A Taste Of: Code Vein

    Video Length: 43:15

In this fun little video, we play the kinda horny titty vampire anime Dark Souls game that they finally made. Truthfully I've just not had time to play it beyond this so I don't have much more to say than what I say here, but I can say definitively that it is actually really quite fun, with a lot of cool mechanics that immediately strike me as cool and fun, and with a rather extensive character creator that is pretty impressive if I do say so myself. Maybe not one of the best, but certainly up there. Any game that lets me dye my hair is cool in my books.

And that's it. Hope you all enjoyed, I'll see you all next time.

Very briefly slipped my mind to post this today.

Zodi Plays: Dishonored [28] Long Train Home

    Video Length: 25:47

It occurs to me as I write this that I ended last video's write up under the assumption that this entire video happened during last time's video. If you want an idea of how impactful this area is. It's not that it's bad by any stretch, it's just a very simple area to cool down between the whaler's and what happens next. We have some fun here, and I talk a bit about how the game has felt mechanically so far. The long and short of it; game's good, and I kinda wish I had played it to completion when I first bought it as opposed to now due to that fun. But on the other hand, having this game just kinda be around to be a blind playthrough was really fun too.

Also, upon reviewing the tapes a bit and replaying some of the game during a violence mode playthrough, I can answer a question I have here. The reaso my grenade did not blow up the door is because, the door it blew up in Sokolov's stage was BARRICADED, not locked. Something about destroying the barricade also meant the door itself was destroyed, whereas a door being locked means it is indestructible. Good to know.

But yes, that'll be it for today. Hope you all enjoyed, I'll see you all next time for something ACTUALLY worth an ominous "...interesting", hehe.

Almost missed posting today because my (22 year old) sister texted me at 1 in the ****ing morning asking where her koala plushie is.

Zodi Plays: Dishonored [29] Granny Dearest

    Video Length: 26:25

In this episode, we have a relatively uneventful trip through the sewers as we make our way towards Granny Rags and Slackjaw, and are faced with a tough situation. Do we assist the horrifying rat wizard cultist who worships the scary whale man, or the crime lord who helped us take care of the Pendletons? Truthfully, this is an easy question; unlike some people, Slackjaw didn't (accidentally or not) have an army of rats try to eat us. So we have another case of intentional murder on our part, but it's probably the most Correct instance of it in the game probably.

As far as boss fights go, this one is actually pretty decent really? She's warping around shooting blasts of Wind and summoning rats, all of which are powers we can do which is cool, but otherwise she's not actually difficult in any real sense since she's just an old lady. The trick is to finding and destroying her cameo portrait, which is a cool idea! It's not the best boss fight in any real sense, but given what this game is about it's basically the only way they COULD make a boss fight.

After that, we bid farewell to Slackjaw and make our way out of the sewer and finally, back into the Hound's Pit Pub, where we meet up with that one nice lady servant... and learn that basically immediately after we were ditched in the flooded district Havelock slaughtered everyone who isn't a noble, only sparing Callista because he owes her uncle. We also start to get an idea of the multiple reasons why they betrayed us and murdered everyone, and we start to see Zodi The Writer shine through as I get a wee bit annoyed with it, but in like a good way since we're not yet at what I would call my full issues with this entire scenario. We'll touch on that once we get to the end game.

But yeah, that'll be it for today! Hope you all enjoyed, I'll see you all next time. Take care.

The non-letahl option is actually to just tranquilize her.

    Almost dropped her.

The boss fight is really not very challenging once you stop panicking because of the rat swarm. Defeating her while going for the Ghost achievement is more of a hassle. I got lucky with her teleportations and snuck up on her.
You can also side with Granny and help her cook Slackjaw. This is what the recipe is for, but not fun or exciting in any way. She just needs some help with dragging Slackjaw around.

I though it was a nice touch that the map you can find with her stuff is of Pandyssia. This is where Vera Moray came first into contact with the Outsider which started her on her road to becoming Granny Rags.

So while it's way too late to matter, sewer segments like this where your only opponents are Krusts is a great time to use your otherwise useless Pistol ammo. No one cares if you are loud if they're not around to hear.

This is a true fact, and one I didn't realize until far too late myself. Womp womp.

Also wow how DID I fail to notice that painting, that's a really cool one. I have to imagine Anton interrogated a lot of people who had seen the Outsider due to having runes and charms and stuff.

I'm also somewhat annoyed that the game went out of its way to explicitly undermine my head-theory for trying to kill Corvo and wiping out the servants. "Eliminate the witnesses" is moronic, though also a staple Villainous Motive. But 'pin it all on the crazed assassin we had nothing to do with' is shot down by random city guardsmen apparently knowing and being totally okay with their new bosses having kept said crazed assassin in a cage while sending him to kill 'high overseers and noblemen'.

To touch on it a bit; they basically just over explained it too much. If they had kept with a strong, simple answer of "they wanted to control Emily and Corvo would never allow that" it would have been fine. Still a stupid act in universe, but stupidity is allowed in stories. But by heaping on more and more additional justifications, they just end up making it muddy and less convincing overall.

I guess it does make it more realistic, if I want to be objective. Strong, simple narratives are good storytelling, but they rarely appear in real life. So a muddled blend of murky motives with questionable justification might actually be more fitting here, considering the principal conspiracists aren't really united by anything except a shared goal of being in charge.

That's the thing though; this isn't real life. The detritus of an elder god gave us a tattoo that let's us teleport through time and space. They could have gone with something simpler and it would have been fine.

I'm all for nuance and complexity in writing, but "we got power hungry and Corvo is an obstacle" is literally actually complex enough.

Realistic was a bad word. Versimilitudistic? Whatever means 'this feels like an actual world, not just a construct for gameplay'. In the same vein as guards who have random conversations about their daily lives. A conspiracy that undermines itself with rash actions because the conspirators are operating at cross purposes and overcomplicating their schemes is plausible in concept. The writers just botched the execution, and make Havelock+co. mustache twirlers.
