The experiments are still under 18 though. IIRC they decided to shelve their XXXenophile style content until then.

How? Well, depends on if this is one of the good trips or not. Hard to tell in the moment, though, you often need to skip a few decades into the future to figure it out.

Well, he's gotten older, but there's more to being a general than just age.

I'm not sure if he's actually taller, or if he's just not slouching. Need to see him next to one of the other characters, preferably Maxim or Dimo.

so it wasn‘t so much a fast healing potion but a fast aging potion, with healing as a side effect of time passing quicker?

I don't know if I'd call it aging just yet. Tweedle outright said it'd triple his fighting ability "This should allow you to heal very quickly, and fight like three Jaeges while doing so". Combine a physical enhancer with an improvement in posture, and you don't need to become a general to look like that. And while he does seem taller, his proportions don't seem to have changed.

That said, if Tweedle just created on the fly a potion that can upgrade any Jaeger into a general? That's going to change a lot of dynamics in Mechanicsberg.

It's not size or even age that makes a general. It's the fact that they grew up.

We'll have to see how long the effects last. This could easily be something like Lord Bunstable's drink, good only for a short period.

A general seems to be more like the alpha of the pack instead of the Elder X (strongest and socially highest instead of being biologically stronger on taking the role). Dimo isn't (noticeably) any stronger from becoming a general, but he has a position of prestige and a more serious dedication to his work. This seems to be driving Oggie into hyperdrive (so he'll be flat out exhausted once it wears off a la genericsuperpotion); I'm pretty sure it's more in the field of Bunstable's work like you said.

Yeah, it's been all but stated that all Jagers get more monstrous as they age, and undergoing that gradual(?) physical transformation doesn't automatically make them generals mentally. As Higgs said, you have to finally get tired of fighting, and grow up.

That's my point: becoming a General is a more societal thing and a matter of growing up; it isn't something that can be achieved by making you bigger and badder and stronger. The Jaegers have been around for centuries; they have their own social structure.

Vole was an anomaly on account of being forced through centuries (?) of time; he basically aged so quickly that he forcibly experienced the circumstances that would have led to him being a general.

Did Higgs really 'promote' him to from a non-General to the status of General, though? Or was he just acknowledging that Vole had reached it on his own as a formality?

True, though I feel the need to mention that being told by your fitness instructor that you've surpassed your weight loss goal and now are fit enough to run a marathon with ease is independent from having bulked up enough to do so.

I'd say a mixture of the two; Vole was recognized by Higgs thus "promoting" him in the class sense, but Vole had already reached that point biologically.

I think we might need to differentiate between "General" as a military rank, and "General" as the ... mature ... form of a Jager.

The Generals (Zog, Khrizhan, Goomblast, Gargantua, and "Mamma" Gkika and probably Higgs) are both - they have both rank and maturity. I suspect that because they had the rank so long ago the terms ancient Jager and General have become synonymous.

...And they hardly seem to be tired of fighting - I think that was down to Vole's specific experiences.

We then the story gives us two new examples:

    • Dimo, who qualifies by virtue of the rank, being the only person capable to do the job after the timeslip (although I would argue that after his experiences detached from the main force he is well on his way to maturity).
    • Vole, who qualifies by virtue of maturity, but doesn't hold the the rank.

Miss Smoke Knight is absolutely right.
Smiling has a very deescalating effect.
    More people should try it.

Which explains a lot about Worm now that I think about it.
No one ever smiles and thus everything escalates more and more.

By the way, my phone doesn't know the word „deescalating“.
    Which also explains a lot.
