    Spoiler: The letter you recieved
    Show

As each of you pass between the two mountain ranges that form a natural barrier against intrusion into Angelis Ianuam you cannot help but admire the beautiful art like qualities the simple rampart walls around the village seem to have. Passing through the main gate the guards stop everyone, asking what their business is before quickly allowing them inside, only once do you ever really notice the guards take longer then normal with a figure, and as you do it quickly becomes apparent why, looking at her features she appears to be one of those wild elves you have heard about but don't often see this far into the mainland. They seem to bring her off to the side to question her about her eagle, no doubt making sure she was not a mage and it was her familiar before allowing, after what is roughly 15 minutes, pass through the gates into the city.

Once inside the city you notice immediately almost every house seems to have some kind of shield with a heladric mark upon it. And talking to the people in town it is quite apparent they are pro empire. Walking among the streets is a vendor selling apples from his cart, grown if what he says is true in Silens Pratus. He seems to be of middling age, and in decent health. Another figure catches your attention, every thirty feet or so hanging up a poster, before he talks to the people near him before moving on again. Seeming to be looking for something if you had to guess. Riding in a horse drawn carriage you notice a rather gaudy looking noble woman in the latest fashion, a small red snake coiled around her hand as if it were a piece of jewelry as she makes her way no doubt to spend gold on whatever it is nobles spent gold on. These and thousands more mill around you, almost as if this were an ant colony and each person had a job to do and no time to do anything else but their job.

The sound of a blacksmith working at his anvil can be heard to the west, closer to the mountains, while the jovial tune of street performers can be heard to the east. And as you walk you watch children running about playing at being knights with their wooden swords, laughing all the while as they chase each other around the streets without a care in the world.

Think ancient Rome/Greece style buildings and such, as these people are styled after them. Their temples for instance would be those large open temples held up by massive columns.

With the gate in sight, Joshua unfolds the letter a courier gave him a few days ago and reads it again. Well, let's see what the future holds... Lucky number seven. he thinks.

A short inspection later wow... you couldn't care much less about who's entering the city! Ah, wait, ha! The elf is getting inspected. he walks down the street and first of all, he enters the Mother's temple and thanks her for a quiet journey.

After that, he slenders around for a while, looking here, listening there, but actually he is just walking and watching the whole scene. One random person that is crossing his way (he couldn't say later if it was a man or woman, human or dwarf, just someone) Joshua asks: Pardon, the Golden M, where is it?

    Daruk

Immediately after receiving the letter, Daruk had made haste to travel to Angelis Ianuam: this was a really good opportunity to briefly visit his family that lived nearby. He and his family lived in different universes, it seemed, and there was always this issue of him having been given up, so this visit was just as awkward as the few previous ones. Nevertheless, Daruk felt an obligation to check in and be aware of their situation, providing monetary support when he could. Even though his father, proud as he is, would not have it, Daruk knew in what flour pot to put the bag of gold pieces so his mother would find it. Daruk made sure to leave 25 gold pieces, a small fortune for these simple folk, which could support them through a longer period of low job availability.

Troubled by having been confronted by the differences in welfare that exist, he made his way to the city. Absent-minded he passed the gates and made his way to the temple. He prayed for all working families to find a patron that would support them when in need. He offered the clergy his services as a healer, should they be required and informed them that he would be staying at the "Golden M", albeit most likely quite briefly. Feeling better, he was more able to enjoy the architecture on the way to the inn. He decided to enter the inn and grab some food and drink: "I wonder what kind of persons have been assigned to our mission".

Merienda couldn't say she was surprised at being stopped. Between her different race and Calendi's apparent similarity to a mage's familiar, she was questioned by at least one guard at practically every human city she passed through. It was funny thing: Merienda lived her whole life among high elves, and it wasn't until she visited a human country that she was made aware of how different from them she was. "Maybe that's just how humans are," she complained to Calendi in druidic as they pass through the checkpoint. "Always dividing and classifying. Hells, they even have endless separations among their own species. Hmm... Maybe it's not so bad. Perhaps it's just what you have to do when you're so short lived."

Calendi, whose understanding of even Druidic was tenuous at best, merely gave her a quizzical look, then took to the skies. With a sigh, the wild elf pulled aside from the throng of people and reread the letter. She wasn't aware her task in helping the empire was going to be quite so... direct. She appreciated the straightforwardness of the instructions nonetheless, and the emperor (or more likely the person who actually sent the letter) at least seemed appreciative of the help, rather than demanding and impatient like she had feared.

She asks around the town for a bit of time, getting pointed in the right direction to the Golden M eventually. Calendi, back from stretching his wings, alights on her outstretched arm and hops up to her shoulder, and the two of them enter the inn. "Seven people." she says to him in Druidic once again. "I wonder if this Emperor is a touch superstitious."

It wasn't usual to receive a letter directly from the Emperor, even for a noble. Particularly for a minor noble. But of late, life wasn't usual anyway. Far from the calm comfort of his home and his wealthy family, Benedict had been traveling the Empire seeking out evil-doers and ne'er-do-wells on his own crusade to rid the Empire of them.

Perhaps his deeds had come to the attention of the Emperor somehow, or maybe he just needed an expendable noble for this quest, but one way or another he had been called upon and he was determined to answer. The brigand he was hunting would get away this time, the lucky bastard.

And so he packed up his gear, climbed up onto his large warhorse named Sigfried, and set off for Angelis Ianuam. With his banded mail, the greatsword slung across his back, the longsword hanging from his hip and the shield bearing the arms of house Shellford hanging from the saddle, he presented the clear image of a noble warrior.

And that was how he approached the gate leading into the city. It didn't take long for him to get through the gates, much like everyone else, and he began his search to determine where the Golden M could be found.

He flagged down a passing citizen and asks from atop his horse, "You there, good man! Where might I find the tavern dubbed the 'Golden M'?"

Crystal Wolfe doesn't know how she managed to come to the Emperor's personal attention, but this isn't the sort of opportunity you pass up when you aspire to the upper echelons of Swordswatch society like Crystal does! Stopping only to verify the letter's credentials (an essential step as any former intelligence operative knows), throw some gear in a kitbag, kiss her bemused parents a hasty goodbye, and let her detective inspector know she was being seconded directly into the emperor's personal service for a while (ok, so that's a few stops), Crystal makes sure she's on the first coach to Angelus Ianum.

On arrival her watch uniform ensures she undergoes a minimum of harassment from the wall guards and soon she finds herself in the village proper. She'd been studying a map of the place on the coach so it doesn't take long for her to get her bearings, and after a few hours' walking spent satisfying herself of a passing familiarity with the unfamiliar streets she finds herself ready to check into her room at the Golden M.

As you make your way to the center of the village you find a simple, at least to the standards of one who has been to the big cities before, temple to the Lovers and quietly make your way over to the obsidian side of the temple and thank her for the safe journey to Angelis Ianuam. As you look around the simple temple, you note the small differences in this temple versus the one back home where your family's main business resides. Normally the statue of the Mother, while vaguely feminine and made of obsidian like the one before you, would have liquid silver running through it, from where her heart would be all throughout her body, while the Father's white marble statue would have the same in gold. Here it seems they do not have the money for such things however as the two sit in thrones and stand a total of maybe just over fifteen feet tall with an opening above them to allow the sun and moon to shine down onto them.

A few people are within the temple as well given prayers to the Lover's and from what you can tell the temple is run by a single woman who wears simple clothes that seem to be nothing more then a burlap sack sewn into a outfit. An aura of light seems to surround her everywhere she walks, and a general sense of calm settles over you as she passes. Besides this the only thing that is of note about this woman is her auburn hair that even braided flows down to her ankles.

Walking around town you notice the mood of the village seems to be energized, everyone seems busy and have either a place to be or something to do. The street performers all seem to have some upbeat type of instrument or song close to them which they play for the crowd. Its curious to see in honesty and if you didn't know better you would swear that the music and such was fueling the people to work harder and faster. Looking about though with the guards constantly on patrol, two standard low ranking soldiers and their warmage backup seem to constantly be on patrol in every part of the town that you pass, and not once do they stop to question the entertainers meaning it all must be mundane means.

After a while of walking you come across a stranger with a few fliers in his hand and ask him about the inn known as the Golden M. "Its three blocks down to your left, kind of looks like a very large stable." the man replies before holding out one of the fliers to you. On it, it depicts a middle class woman, possibly of noble birth and great beauty, looking at the picture and then this uninspiring man, you note after having to actually pay attention. "Have you seen this woman in your travels sir? She is my wife and has been missing for two days now, I'm starting to get worried about her. She has never been gone for this long." he says to you, his eyes pleading for hope that you may have seen her.

As you arrive at home your Mother greets you warmly, however she makes it clear that your father has been working a lot at the quarry lately and his health is not what it once was. Explaining that because of this he had started drinking more then before and coming home late at night or not even at all sometimes. She knew he was cheating on her as she could always find him at the local tavern when she went, but every now and then one of the other miners would stop by to say he picked up an extra shift and wouldn't be home till late.

After that is done she offers you a bowl of the soup she has on the cauldron, what appears to have been there for a few days now and had very little besides broth in it, wazeing away your money as you try to offer it to her. "You know your father wouldn't accept that. Not after having to give you up like we did. He's never forgiven himself for that you know." she says kindly to you as she places a loving hand on your own.

Soon after you depart, sneaking the gold into the flour pot knowing she would need it more then you at this moment. After all if you could do this for the emperor you would be swimming in gold no doubt, and so make haste to Angelis Ianuam knowing you could get there within a day if the weather held.

As you enter Angelis Ianuam without incident, showing your holy symbol of Heironeous to the guards who quickly let you pass without anymore questions, you make your way to one of the largest buildings in the entire city. What appears as a small keep standing near to the mountain, with a hand gripping a lighting bolt emblazoned upon a azure field surrounded by golden framework resting on a flag overlooking the keep. And a welcome sight indeed it is to see the lighting rods meant to interpret Heironeous will atop the temple's battlements. Two guards stand at attention at the door, a longsword and shield at the ready to stop any would be evil doer or person with ill intent for those within. They quickly recognize you as a brother Soldier-at-Arms and allow you passage into the fortress.

Once inside you make your way to the commanding officer of the temple, a gray bearded old veteran that looks like he has seen his fare share of battles. Extending his arm out to you he greets you in the traditional warrior fashion of grabbing each other by the forearm. "It is an honor to have you another Soldier-at-arms at our disposal son. My name is Father Godric, and I may be taking you up on that offer sooner then you think. News is coming in of a possible incursion of Hextorites trying to set up shop here and as you and I both know we cannot allow this. Even if they are tolerated in the empire, they will only bring discord to the community." he says sternly to you, as if trying to ignite the spark of Heironeous within you. No matter what you say he quickly gives you directions to the Golden M. wishing you a blessed day.

Living among your own kind for so long it is hard to imagine a world where magic is not as natural as breathing, where everyone was free to do what they wished so long as it didn't harm anyone else. Where a stranger would feel as welcomed in a town as an old friend coming to visit. Yet these humans seemed to distrust anything they couldn't control, and that which they could control they want to divide for some odd reason. Perhaps it was their nature, being so short lived, however it did seem to have a lot more flaws in its workings then the simpler style of ruling back in Ellenthyr.

Once you had been to one human town they all seemed to be the same, or at least the general setup, and so with a few simple questions asked you easily find yourself at the Golden M Inn, if it could be called such a thing for it looked more like a stable from the outside then any inn you had slept in before. Walking into the barnlike doors you notice the interior has the same rustic farm feel about it that the outside does, though it is at least clean inside. Everything you can see seems to be made out of wood shipped in from Redwood Haven if you had to guess across the sea judging by the craftsmanship of the products here meaning someone with a lot of money or love has to own this place.

Looking around most of the serving staff seem to be human females, though their is a single half-elf among the group as well as a halfling. Each of the humans look similar in appearance, possibly even related in some way. Behind the counter cleaning a glass sits an elderly woman, in simple work clothes that you would expect from a barkeep, while you can hear a few male voices coming from a window like slot behind and to the left of her that seems to lead to a kitchen of sorts. Mom your husband still hasn't returned with the roasted boar for the night yet, and if he doesn't return soon we are going to have to delay serving dinner." a male figure with curly brown hair and emerald green eyes calls out to the elderly woman at the bar. "Oh don't you worry Thomas he will be here, we have been running this place for years after all we know what needs doing." the old woman says waving him off.

It is at this time the young half-elf notices you and walks over to you. "Greetings and welcome to the Golden M, my name is..." however before she can finish one of the human girls steps out from behind you. "Her name is Aurelia and I am Drusa Octavius. How may we assist a distinguished guest such as yourself today? she asks holding out a small piece of meat for your eagle to eat.

As you are talking a human walks into the inn behind you, with icy blue eyes and dark platinum hair and standing a good at least seven inches taller then you if not more. Looking over her gear quickly at first you think she is a town guard, however the colors on her uniform are not right, just slightly off, as if from a different village or perhaps the standard military gear?

Being of noble birth had its privileges, trying to hide being the top of the food chain however did not. Traveling among a caravan was slow and teadiceous, stopping every time they saw a bad omen and such. You are almost positive you could have made it here days ago had it not been for that one incident where the lead wagon saw a broken tree branch "in the shape of a wolf" which meant the whole caravan had to take a different path just to avoid the possible danger of their superstition.

However at last you were here, your destination Angelis Ianuam and you could finally kick your feet up, relax for a day. Before going out and making a name for yourself as your father had instructed. He was the one after all who had given you the letter after a visitor came late into the night the day before. No one however in the entire estate could tell you who the person was as they were not a regular royal official from what they could tell. Walking along the compact dirt streets to the apple cart you easily purchase a single apple from the salesman who is more than happy to talk to you about where to find the Golden M. "You know they say that the Golden M is just a front, that all the women who work there are really his daughters. Well at least the humans and half-elf, they say the halfling is his new one. Didn't hear it from me though." the apple seller says, before thinking about what else may be going on in the city. "Well there is that guy that is looking for his rich wife, hes been putting up fliers all over the place, something about she is missing or what not. I doubt it though, she is probably just out with the other upper class and will be back with in a few days." he says, not really able to think of anything else that seems new to him, though if asked about anything specific who knows.

You come in wearing shiny armor like that and carrying a sword as big as him and I'll let you pass without a question too." the guard replies that had waved you on to the complaining travelers still waiting to be checked in.

Once inside the village it doesn't take you long to find someone eager to help you. A young boy, maybe ten years of age eagerly answers your question. "I can show you the way sir knight, it would be my honor to escort someone such as yourself there." he says holding up his wooden sword as he tries to do a salute before realizing he still has the sword in his hand and wacks himself with it on accident. Goodbyes are never easy, however when the lord of an entire kingdom calls it is hard to refuse. And it is because of this you say goodbye to your parents as well as your commander who seems to smirk, almost as if he knew this was coming. "Remember who you are Wolf, don't want me and the pack to have to go looking for you now." your inspector says with a smile and a wish good luck before you depart. As you leave on your caravan your fellow guards you served with play on their trumpets, giving you a send off you no doubt could never forget as none of them were rather good at it.

Upon arriving at Angelus Ianum the guards at the gate look at your uniform and quickly salute. "Sorry for the wait Madam. Had we known you were coming we would have had an escort for you. Heading to the wall?" the guard asks, thinking you were being transferred from wherever you were posted to Apicem Geminae.

Not long after that you are hastily let into the village that as you note looks more like a training camp was here and the soldiers simply never left, choosing to instead build their homes here. Walking around town you get a few nods from the guards walking the streets on patrol, and every now and then you pick up a few of the older generation in the town (fifties or so) talking about the wars and how back in the day the Dragonborn would constantly make pushes against Angelus Ianum, when Apicem was still being built by the dwarves, and their fallen comrades they lost.

Eventually you decide it is time to find the Golden M inn, and following the map you had studied find it after only getting turned around once do to think the place was a stable and not really an Inn.Walking into the barn like doors you notice the interior has the same rustic farm feel about it that the outside does, though it is at least clean inside. two other human women, roughly the same age as the one talking to the elf, and a halfling are busy about doing what appears to be the job of servers (though at this time of day the place seems very quite). You note that all three human's look similar, possibly even related if you had to guess, and a much older woman sitting behind the counter cleaning a glass.

    Issarel Clanyr

Issarel was surprised when instead of her finding the Enchanter, a letter from the Emperor of Man found her. She was unsure how she came to the attention of the human ruler, perhaps it was her time in the dancing troupe, though they had never performed in the Imperial Court directly. More likely, it had been her not so delicate inquiries about the Enchanter that had attracted notice. Still, this Cult sounded like just the kind of thing that bastard would be up to, and it was her best lead.

She arrived at Angelis late in the day, towards dusk when she thought the guards would be most fatigued and hurried to end their day rather than asked too many questions. As she waited in line to enter Angelis, her vantage point atop her horse allowed her to note an elvish woman getting hassled about some raptor she kept. It stirred something within her, her sympathies going to the woman, she wanted to say SOMETHING, but that was not the mission, the goal. She was an outsider here, an outsider everywhere now, and attracting attention, would probably get her locked up. She had had enough of captivity. Better to keep her head down, and yet, it didn't sit well with her. She was dressed simply for travel, and other that the odd blade concealed upon her person (a lady had to protect herself), her rapier and bow were bound for entry into the city. She was here for information, not war, or at least she hoped.

If Benedict gave any notice to the grumblings of the commoners behind him, he certainly doesn't show it. It was refreshing, however, that at least whoever ran this town had a sensible head on their shoulders.

As the young boy eagerly offers to help and smacks himself upside the head in his haste, Benedict chuckles warmly.

"Excellent! Heironeous has sent me a small knight to aid in my quest! He even has his own sword!"

He dismounts from Sigfried, the bands of his armor clattering together as he lands on the ground.

"Though he is missing a trusty steed to carry him into battle. No matter, you may borrow mine until the completion of our quest!"

He lifts the boy up and places him onto the saddle, and then makes sure his feet are safely in the stirrups so that he won't fall off.

"Point the way, young sir, and we shall be off!"

Meri pauses for a moment to appreciate the inn before entering. Someone had put a lot of love into this place. Someone with a love of animals, if they were modeling it after a stable. Inside, she makes no comments over the conversation between Thomas and his mother, though she agreed with the older woman. A few hours was not enough time to start worrying about a missing hunter. Heck, if this man was anything like herself, he might make the trip a bit longer intentionally. Few things beat that quiet moment alone after a hunt.

"Hi Drusa; I'm Merienda." Calendi snaps up the morsel of meat eagerly and fixes Drusa with his raptor gaze and blinks. If she was familiar with birds, she might recognize this as a sign of trust: birds of prey don't tend to close their eyes around potential predators, or prey. Still, eagles are not the most facially expressive animal, so the gaze probably carries it's same intensity.
The interaction is over in a moment, but it's enough to get an honest smile out of Merienda. "And that's Calendi. He says 'thanks for the snack'. I'm just here to meet with some... coworkers, I suppose. If you don't mind, I'll just get a table and wait."

Meri finds a table that can hold seven people which shouldn't be hard given the Inn's lack of customers at the moment. She pulls over chairs if needed, then takes a seat and puts the letter from the emperor on the table in front of her, as if reading it. She didn't actually need to read it again, but Meri realized her soon-to-be companions had no other way of recognizing each other. She wasn't about to start asking around about their semi-secret task from the Emperor.

    Crystal

Crystal smiles lopsidedly at her chief as they part ways. "You know I'm not one to dwell on where I'm from, sir. Only where I'm going. Good luck to you too. It's been an honour." She salutes her squad smartly and boards the coach without looking back.

The journey to Angelus Ianum is passed mostly in studious silence as Crystal reads. None of the other people on the coach appear to be of any consequence, so she pays them little heed. It almost comes as a surprise as the coach arrives at their destination and the guards wave them through. She returns the guards' salutes, but shakes her head at the implication she may be headed for the wall.

"Detective Wolfe, here on detached duty. I just have a few errands in town. I'll try not to cause you any trouble."

Arriving at the Golden M, Crystal takes a moment to admire the craftsmanship of the inn. She has to admit this is a step up from a barracks, and she reflects that hopefully direct service for the emperor will come with more perks of the same.

An elf with a hawk is just unusual enough to make Crystal wonder if this might be one of her new associates but it doesn't do to assume. Instead she waits politely at a discreet distance until the staff and the elf have concluded their business, whereupon she approaches for service.

"Good day. My name is Detective Wolfe, I believe you have a room prepared for me? I'm supposed to meet some associates here and I was wondering if any of them had arrived yet."

Everyone else seems to be arriving during the day while you stated dusk so you would not have witnessed the events with Merienda Duskrose. You would be coming much later then the others, and no doubt thus be walking into a very different situation. If that's how you want to proceed thats fine, I just want to give you a heads up before posting like that. For now I will assume you simply are coming roughly the same time as the others, and will retcon it/make a separate IC just for you if needed

As you sit atop your horse outside the village gates waiting to get in you note the guards giving a fellow elf trouble. Something within calls for you to defend her, however you quietly push that feeling down, knowing that by helping her you could once more lose your own freedom. Soon enough you watch as they allow her entry into the city, and it takes almost another half hour before you make it to the gate where the guard on duty looks up to you with your hood drawn. "Name, and reason for coming to Angelis Ianuam?" he asks patiently suspecting that because you owned a horse you were either a noble or at least someone with money no doubt as very few people you had seen this day had arrived on such a creature. After answering the guards questions he adds with a wave of his hand, signaling you to enter, "Please remember there is to be no use of violence within the city, that is what the patrols are for miss. Have a good day." he says not even noting your elven features thanks to the height and cloak concealing much of your face.

Once inside the village many avenues were open to you, and upon a horse most people quickly moved aside not wanting to be stepped on or pushed aside by the noble beast. The question was where did you want to go, directly to the inn, or perhaps do some exploring of the area?

As you dismount from your great warhorse the boys eyes glisten with joy as he hears your words, and you not blinks a few times almost as if trying to make sure he wasn't dreaming. "Why thank you sir, I promise that I will be the best knight you can find in this town." the boy says as you lift him up onto your steed who looks back at you with almost a questioning look on its face before what appears to be a shrug like effect comes over the horse and it turns back around.

"Right this way Sir Knight, let us make haste to the Golden M and complete your quest." the young boy says as he tries to emulate what he has seen other people due with horses, holding on for dear life to the reigns it seems you note as his knuckles are white from his tight grip on them. After a few reassuring words from you, the two of you are soon on your way to the Golden M.

It takes a total of ten minutes to reach your destination, most of which is spent helping the young boy with your horse when the streets grew a bit more busy until at last you find yourself in front of a large stable looking building. "Here we are Sir Knight. The Golden M." the boy says beaming with a smile as he points to the building before you. It is clean and very upkept, however it looks like a stable, not an inn at all. Either someone took a lot of care into building this place, or it is just a stable as your time spent around them tells you. Looking down the street you notice an older gentleman in what appears to be hunter's garbs, though rather out of date, sitting on a small little wagon pulled by a mule. Something covered up beneath a simple tarp, judging by his garb and the size of the cart you would have to guess it was his quarry.

As Calendi blinks the woman smiles warmly at the bird, clearly as you suspected an animal lover given how few people would pick up on such a small detail. "Why of course Lady Merienda, and it was my pleasure Calendi. Take a seat wherever you wish, Calendi is free to fly around and explore if he wishes within the inn, no one will bother him I promise." Drusa says warmly to them as she gestures to the large, open floor plan of the building. From the inside it appeared much larger then the outside, with high ceilings, and balconies overlooking the central hall from the two upper levels that no doubt guests rented out.

Going over to sit at one of the center tables of the inn, you note the chair you are about to sit on seems to have talon marks from where another avian creature choose to sit. And the feet of the table have claw marks, minor things, but clearly made by a cat. On the opposite side of the Golden M to the left of the entrance sits a small raised stage where a performer could play, though no one seems to be there at the moment, with a small door set behind it. "Would you like anything to eat or drink Lady Merienda? We have a wide variety of drinks on stock at the moment, and our lunch of the day is a simple beef stew with a fresh loaf of bread from the bakery." she says before turning to Calendi to see if he would ask for anything, not that she could understand him of course, but it was the thought of making him know she saw him and respected him just as any other patron of the inn.

As you are sitting down at your own table you note a human male come into the tavern in the simple garb of a mortician. He quickly seems to seat himself as if he is a regular here and takes out his supplies and begins writing something before getting up to speak with the halfling woman you saw earlier.

Ignoring the man's question, you make your way to the Golden M inn, following the directions he gave you. Sure enough you find it with ease, though that could be because it seemed another figure was looking for it you note as a boy rides atop a horse that is clearly not his own as a man who seems of noble birth and quite some skill given the make of his armor and weaponry. About halfway along your trip you spotted them and as you continued to follow the directions given to you by the man soon realize they must be going to the same place.

The building before you looks very similar to a stable you note, though thankfully it doesn't smell like one. A large barn door seems to be the entrance to the inside of the building that is very appealing to look at as the grounds around it are up kept and the building clean. Down the road to your left you can just barely make out an older man coming this way sitting on a cart pulled by a mule. What is in the cart however is obscured by the knight.

Not waiting to see what the noble and boy would do, or where the old man was going you quickly make your way inside and take an empty table where you unload your belongings are begin to write your letter to your brother. So it comes as a surprise to you as the letter is finished being written and you go to take the page out of your book that you note your knife is no longer among your possessions. Stopping the halfling barmaird as she walks by you ask her to watch your belongings, stating you will be right back. "Sir while the Golden M does indeed do this kind of service it is only for our paying clientele. And so far all you have done is come in and sat down." she notes, unaware of who you are besides the shovel and tools of a mortician you have so quickly laid out on the table.

A few tables away from you sits an elf woman and her pet eagle being served by one of the human servers who seems to be having a lot easier time then you at the moment.

As you walk away you can almost swear you here him say happy hunting.

As you approach the human server that had been taking care of the elf woman seated at the table she is caught off guard by your directness as there were still a few others that could have helped you at this time, however soon regains her composure. "Greetings Detective Wolfe and welcome to the Golden M. I take it you are part of the private group Glem or are you one of the others booked? If Glem I will have to see your invitation." she inquires to further help you, however you note she doesn't answer your question until you have answered hers.

"Wait! Actually I might be part of Glem. But my, ah, letter of introduction did not authorise me to share it's contents. I'm afraid I must decline. However... I believe GLEM is the moniker of my authority. I trust that will be sufficient?"

As they reach their destination, Benedict thanks the child and helps him down from the horse. "Well done! We've succeeded in our quest! You've been a most excellent ally, young sir, and I hope someday our paths might cross again."

He reaches into the pouch at his hip and pulls out a few silver pieces and hands them to the child. "A shield to go with your sword would be wise if you wish to shield the innocent."

He pats the boy once on the head, takes the reigns, and leads Sigfried into the stables.

The woman seems to be getting ready to leave when you stop her, realization coming to your quick mind as you correct your statement. It looks for a few moments as if the young waitress may not agree with what you have said and will not accept your answer. "I will be back in a moment Detective Wolfe. she says, leaving you where you are as she makes a beeline to the old woman behind the counter and begins talking to her in hushed whispers. After a few back and forth questions the old woman lifts up a part of the bar table before walking over to you with the younger woman.

No longer hidden by the counter you notice the woman is round, though in a healthy way, and her gray hair is kept tied neatly in a bun. Keen green eyes hiding an intelligence and wisdom few could perhaps match look you up in down as she makes her way over to you with the help of the young waitress, leaning most of her weight onto the younger woman's left shoulder you note.

As she finally reaches you she extends her left hand, a wrinkled thing with two missing fingers. Greetings Detective Wolfe I am Mitéra Iulia, my daughter Drusa says you were stating the Glem may be the party you are with. You understand why I hope we must go through such matters as this. Asking around town two names keep popping up often, while a few others are thrown around every now and then. The Golden M and the Drunken Archer are the two main ones mentioned. The more soldier like people using mentioning the Drunken Archer more often then not, while traders mention the Golden M.

As you look to a broad shouldered individual asking about an inn the man smiles, trying to look impressive as he leans casually against a wooden barrel with a bag of what you might guess to be flower on his shoulder. The Drunken Archer is near the North Gate, lots of us patriots like to go there. Its a rowdy place, but I'll tell you what, come with me and I'll make sure you have a great time." he says to you, waiting for your answer.

Another person, a trader given their trappings seems to look you up and down, trying to judge where to send you before replying. "The golden M is near the center of town. Nice little business they got there, and always kind. The decour takes a bit getting used to though, look for a large building looking like a stable a block away from the center of town and that will be it. If you end up going there tell Mitéra Iulia that Maximus sent you and will be stopping by tonight for a room. She will treat you well." the trader promises before going off on his way towards the markets if you had to guess.

It goes on like this for a while, with a two other names being thrown out, though they sound more like drinking holes then proper inns from how they are described to you. Soon enough you find yourself at the Golden M, and much as you were told it looks like a stable, the knight walking into the barn door with his horse paints the picture perfectly for you, though as you suspect he must be very embarrassed given the decor within from your vantage point. Circling the building a few times you notice only one way out on the ground level, a back door that no doubt is how they bring their trash out into the ally behind the building at night. Someone of your skill could perhaps escape from the second story windows if they were careful and picked the right room. The third floor seems to have its own balcony however, though it would be a very long fall down and would hurt greatly as well as make a lot of noise you note.

Her features are mostly hidden behind the cloak the figure wears, though owning a horse was no small feat meaning whoever it was had to have at least some wealth, perhaps a minor noble of the village? Then again why would a local be asking about an inn?

Once you arrive at the building known as the golden M you note a knight trying to get his horse through the barn doors of the building that appears to be a stable from the outside, however looking through the door shows it clearly not to be. The figure from earlier is also there, watching the whole ordeal from her own horse from a safe distance you note before she seems to turn the corner and disappear from view. Accepting your help to get down from Sigfried the boy seems to be almost dancing with joy at your praise. When you reach into your pouch and pull out a few silver pieces for the boy he seems in awe and for a minute he simply stands there unable to move. Eventually he replies, "I will sir, thank you sir. My name is Aetius by the way sir. I will not forget your kindness." the boy says running off, no doubt to tell his friends and parents about what had just happened.

As you walk into the stable doors and look around you notice something very apparent, this is not in fact a stable, but the inn itself. Seeing you and the warhorse a young serving girl about the age of 15 comes rushing over to you. Her dark brown hair flowing freely behind her as her round green eyes seemed to laugh at the knight, her hand hiding her bemused expression. Walking over to you the young woman says in a singsong like voice. "Greetings and welcome to the Golden M inn. My name is Laelia Octavius, and if you would step outside a moment I will show you to our stables." with that she waits to see what you will do, it is clear from her expression this is not the first time someone has tried to bring a horse through the front door, though it is none the less amusing to her.

Thanks Cora Bobbin, I'll be back in a moment! Joshua bends a bit over and starts rushing through the door, just to get blocked by a knight and his horse. ...or a bit later he added.

He steps to the side to let the knight maneuver his horse back or forth however he wants to. He grew up among knights, and respecting there honorful behavior, Joshua knows the last thing a knight wants is to be confronted with a failure. So he waits on the side to slip through a gap once it occurs.

As the young woman walks up, Benedict apologizes. "My apologies, miss. I seem to have mistaken this for the stables. First time I have been to an inn which was built into one."

He then does his best to turn the massive warhorse around inside the room in order to lead it back out the door. This, predictably, goes rather unwell as the now-irritated horse is maneuvered in the tight confines of a barroom. More than one patron finds themselves a bit closer to the rear-end of the horse than they ever cared to be, and the clatter of drinks and eating utensils (plus a table or two) falling over fills the room. All of that, undercut by an occasional "pardon", "my apologies, good man", and "don't worry, I'm sure your laundress will get that out of your shirt easily enough".

Eventually, much to the delight and relief of any patrons present, he does manage to get the horse turned around and out the door and headed in the direction of the actual stables with the help of Laelia.

Merienda shakes her head. "Thank you, but we ate on the road."

She notices the woman at the bar finally, talking to the mother and owner. It wasn't busy and Meri had keen ears, so she could hear much of the conversation. After counting the words in her own letter, she approaches the woman.

"What a coincidence, that's just how long my letter is too." She extends a hand. "Merienda. And this is Calendi."

I'm assuming Meri can hear bits of the conversation since the inn was described as basically empty and they didn't mention attempting to keep their voices down. If she can't hear, just let me know and I'll edit things.

    Amara

The entrance clear, Amara steps into the main room and glances about, trying to get the measure of how upscale the inn was, and whether it looked like any of the others were also recipients of the Emperor's Letter.

Once she had a good idea she walked up to whoever it looked like was running the place. When they had a free moment she would speak up.

"Good day, my name is Amara van Tannin," she said, "I was told lodging would be arranged for me here."

Finally the horse was gone, so Joshua could leave the tavern.

He almost collids with a women that enters the inn. Lady... he nodds.

He runs out of the inn, heading to the blacksmith, to buy himself a knife.

    Crystal

Crystal frowns, irritated by having got the answer incorrect. This time she pauses for a good deal longer, running combinations back and forth through her head. Finally she nods with certainty.

"Faith is enough to protect the empire!" she declares triumphantly. "I wish someone had given me a heads up about that little puzzle. I could have worked on it on the ride over."

Crystal half turns to Merienda with curiosity, but leaves her hand hanging for the moment. "Detective Crystal Wolfe. What's the eighth word in your letter?" she challenges.
