Default [DnD 5e] What Lies Beneath Four Stone Hill? OOC

Welcome to the OOC thread for the Four Stone Hill game!

Make yourselves comfortable, claim a speech color if you so desire (I will keep red for myself), say hello and post a link to your character sheet again for my reference.

Over the next couple days, I'll put some more information here for you to review. Additionally, I'll put together a Discord channel that we can all chat on for OOC purposes if you so desire to use it, and send it to your PM.

I look forward to going through this adventure with you all!

    Spoiler: Stryford Information
    Show

    Stryford

Population: roughly 1,800 (varies by season due to river trade)

The town of Stryford is split into two halves: north and south Stryford. Approaching from the north, one would see “the Toothpick”, the local name for the Shireguard fort and garrison. There is extra presence here because of the amount of trade that travels to and from Marcrys along the Trade Road. From the Toothpick, you can hire the services of bodyguards and caravan escorts. Similar services can also be found within the town itself. The Trade Road is busy with travel; less busy is the Mire Road leading directly north to Soulwatch and, along the way, the hamlet of Greneld.

Rulership: Town Council locally called “The Three”
    1. Aayden Rommel: male human, watchmaster of the Stryford Shireguard
    2. Lena Bergen: female human priestess of Kisana at the The Primal Delight
    3. Akkar Luro, male half-elf. Akkar is the dockmaster of Stryford, overseeing the river trade

    Temples:
    1. “The Primal Delight”: the only brothel in town as well as a temple of Kisana, popular among the river tradespeople. Roughly a dozen employees, led by three priests of Kisana (who also perform....services)
    • Lena Bergen: female human, high priestess
    • Stick: human male who comes by his name because of his height and slenderness, and...other qualities
    • Ida Kilen: human female

    2. “The Devil’s Due”: gambling hall and tavern, with a small shrine to Ytris at the center of the main room among the gambling tables
    • Eirik Velde: human male, owner and proprietor of the tavern. Missing lower half of left leg, lost to a troll attack some time ago and is eager to tell the tale to any willing to listen
    • Carver: human male, no-nonsense priest of Ytris and gambling hall manager/overseer

    3. River Maiden's Shrine: a small shrine to Ushara, the Tearmaiden (goddess of water). This simple shrine is on an island in the middle of the river and accessible only by boat. Ferrymen and bargeworkers will often visit and offer tithes for luck or as thanks for safe arrival, depending on whether their coming or going. Overseen by a shrouded woman the locals call the River Maiden
    • River Maiden: female of an unknown race, she constantly wears a veil and headdress which obscure her face and features. She rarely speaks except to say short blessings to those that offer tithes/prayers at the shrine.

    Taverns and Inns:
    1. The Devil’s Due: gambling hall and tavern (no inn services) in South Stryford, in the central market ring. Detailed above.
    2. The Barge and Oar: south Stryford riverside tavern popular amongst the river tradesmen; 10 rooms total; very cheap and poor quality. Owned by Stol Drekir, a vak male.
    3. Bellwood Bar: in north Stryford; higher quality tavern and inn but not very busy thanks to rumors of his establishment being haunted; owned by struggling but friendly parra Otto Kehn.
    4. The Old Root: a tavern built around the Old Root, a massive tree said to be the oldest one in north Stryford. No known owner (except probably to the Three), but managed by a half-elf female named Vanda Helle.
    5. The Horseshoe: tavern within the Toothpick, owned by Paulus Milarn.

    Shops:
    1. Watershed Goods: travel supplies, competes with the Muddy Frog.
    2. The Better Pig: butcher/meats/farming goods and supplies
    3. The Muddy Frog General Goods: travel supplies and some small amount of potions
    4. The Blank Page: a small bookstore and parchment dealer; rare inks from Vidan; etc.
    5. Gray Ingot Stables: set of stables to the south of the Toothpick, also serves as a mercenary guild for caravan guards and teamsters

Neat! Thanks for accepting me, I'm looking forward to this game! I'm Ildu, and I'll be playing Syline, your friendly neighborhood drug dealer soccer mom druid.

    Syline, Wood Elf Druid

I'd like to reserve the color Lime for my character's speech, if that's all right.

    Spoiler: Ten-Minute Background - Syline
    Show
    Spoiler: 5 Things
    Show
Syline's family hails from the forests of Vyselt, but she has spent a majority of her adult life outside of the forests on adventures, raiding dusty tombs and taking part in massive wars, only to occasionally settle in at home with tall tales of the outside world.

Despite the elves' persecution, she has made a momentous change in her life, in the ability to help others in need as a wise-woman, traveling the world and giving help to any who would accept her healing touch. She likes to believe she's helping atone for her ancestors' follies.

In her time, Syline has held down multiple jobs, including time spent as a thief, mercenary, carpenter, and a brief stint as a tapster at the Sodded Gob in Plath.

Originally trained in the druidic arts by a small circle of druids in a forest far to the east, Syline has spent the last hundred years as a traveling witch, selling potions to make her way and offering her services on the outskirts of larger towns. She has not seen her mentors in approximately twenty years, since the death of Archdruid Wolfram.

The staff she carries is made of hornwood, carved herself as the final test in completing her arduous apprenticeship as a druid. Made to serve as a magical focus, walking stick, and wooden sword should the need arise, it has many practical uses. She holds it very dear to her.
    Spoiler: 2 Goals
    Show
Over the course of her various travels and meditations, Syline has discovered a secret about places of great magical power lost to time, and wishes to ensure they remain hidden and protected from groups who would seek to use their power to bring down a new calamity.

Syline desires to be remembered as a hero when her time comes.
    Spoiler: 2 Secrets
    Show
She has had children in the past, but left them to be raised by friends, among diverse cultures, and frequently sends them gifts and trinkets, though they themselves don't know her.

She's searching for a beautiful, peaceful place to die.
    Spoiler: 3 People
    Show
Ku. The former Kra'liir slave of a rogue wizard named Eargal, Syline rescued him and the elf with no name or home pledged his eternal service to his rescuer. The two traveled on many adventures and developed a kindred friendship that was something akin to a filial bond, until an ill-fortuned expedition led to his supposed death beneath a giant's castle.

Goldar Thunderaxe. A traveling Shuldak bard who has aided Syline in the past. A dwarf with his finger to the pulse of many rumors in Oceros.

Myr Wolfram. The human daughter of archdruid Alfa Wolfram, Myr has spent the majority of her formative years as a hexblade mercenary, fighting with her father's spear.
    Spoiler: 3 Memories
    Show
Sharing a drink with Ku and her companions as they listened to Goldar's exaggerations of their exploits to the local townsfolk.

Parting ways with her infant son and daughter, turning back to look as the wagon slowly traversed over the horizon as tears welled in her eyes.

Her first battle, the smell of blood and sound of screams, as soldiers fell all around her, and the panic she felt as her magic weaved, mending an Ovaki sellsword's severed arm back to its socket.

Thanks for including me. I'll be playing Mornok Thunderhammer who will be speaking in powderblue. He is a mountain dwarf wizard with a penchant for heavy armor, melee combat, and lately, teleporting short distances with a thunderous bang. You've known him long enough to know that under his gruff exterior lies a heart of gold. And while he always follows the law to the best of his abilities, he does his best to champion the needy.

Cool! Blue should work for Duncan.
    https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=1983508

@SquirrelKing: Duncan has a horse, Freya. When Duncan knows he's going into terrain or a situation that is unsuitable for Freya he will try to find accommodation for her at the last habitation on the way. He has the Folk Hero's Rustic Hospitality feature so I think that when Duncan turns up with some fresh game for the pot and asks people to keep Freya in the field behind their house for a day they'll be cool with that. Is that reasonable?

Both Duncan and Syline can cast Pass without trace and Darkvision though Duncan doesn't have enough spell slots for everyone.
Party: If Syline or Duncan casts Pass without trace the whole party can take stealth checks with minimum results of 16, 11(d), 18, 10(d) and 13 respectively. This might save us from being ambushed every time.
Scout group: One or more of Bandram, Duncan and a wild-shaped Syline could scout with Pass without trace if we're prepared to split the party. I don't think we have the skills to scout without magical assistance and / or wildshape.

Syline, Bandram, and Duncan can forage if the party is in a natural environment and make supplies go further.

Duncan has a horse which can help carry stuff, though it probably won't go everywhere with the party. Would people be ok with working with common supplies across the party (and maybe getting the stronger party members to carry more)?

@all When we get going, how much will people want to try and stealth?

Wow, that's quite the impressive table you've put together! I've got no problem with adjusting my spells to the situation if we find ourselves in a situation where we're diving into a dungeon where Braydon would be effectively blinded. Otherwise, I think we're all pretty much good to go--Bandram is an orc (darkvision), Mornok is a dwarf (darkvision), Syline is an elf (darkvision) and Duncan has access to the spell for himself. That seems manageable! I think I'd like to try things stealthily before going in guns blazing, personally.

I've got to agree that the paladin and barbarian could probably do a pretty fair good cop/bad cop routine need we break someone's knees. Also, I'd love to see Syline and Bandram trying to shark people at cards/dice just out of humor.

I suspect Squirrel nerfed food/water spells for a reason to make things like tracking rations and visiting inns have meaning, though that's just my own conjecture. I have no qualms with it.

Mornock understands the need for stealth, but is unlikely to be much use in that regard. Thunder step is more of an 'Oh Crap!' Spell for him than anything, but if he does use it, especially in a dungeon, it will probably alert the whole area. Besides, he's much more likely to save his 3rd level slots for countering magic than attacking anything. That said, he should have carrying capacity to spare, and will happily carry his light load to keep from over-encumbering others.

Also, it now includes some more details about Stryford in a spoiler.

Note, the below characters need a little more information:
    1. aguaracu, you need to select languages for Duncan

    2. Zero Prime, the character sheet still shows level 7 instead of 6. Also, many other details need finished up (hit points, equipment, languages, etc.)

Sorry I apparently missed this thread, pretty stoked to play though ... that being said I have my old table top crew coming to town this weekend, and they have asked me to run a one shot. I only get to play with them once or twice a year nowadays (Adulting sucks!) so I will be a little busy prepping and playing that this week. However, I am taking a stay-cation next week so I will have plenty of time to catch up!

Now, back to the Four Stone Hill, Braydon Blackwater will be speaking in Bold Navy!

    Hey everyone, a few notes:

    1. I sent a PM to everyone with the Discord invite link, if you wish to use it. It's not mandatory though, but please let me know if you don't intend to use it so I don't spam you with invite links later, since they expire.

    2. In the Google drive folder for the game, I put two new documents: a spreadsheet with the game calendar and a document describing "Time and Days". While it's largely just "fluff", feel free to look through the documents if/when you have time. Regardless of how little/much you read, I would like one thing: please pick a birthday for your character. I has a small game effect of some sort, depending on the day you choose.

    3. Zero Prime mentioned he won't be able to devote a lot of attention to the game until week's end, which actually works for my schedule as well. So, let's plan on officially starting the campaign in one week: 26 AUG 2019 will be the campaign start date.

    4. I will be out of country for work in two weeks for the span of a week. My ability to post will likely be affected - probably only able to post around once every third day. This will be from 31 AUG to 7 SEPT. After that, I'm back in the country (but elsewhere other than home), and should be more easily able to post given the schedule I have for that time. (I warned you that my schedule is a bit unusual. Please be patient as this will be a fairly regular occurrence, which is why I mentioned that I won't be able to post every day more often than not - and don't expect the same of you either.)

    5. I still owe you a list of starting loot to divvy out before we start. That will be ready soon and I'll have a link to the spreadsheet where people can edit and indicate what they're interested in. And in the case of multiple people being interested, then you can discuss and sort out who does get that item.

    Thanks all!

@SquirrelKing: I think you mean the Ranger favoured enemy languages? I'm not sure what languages work thematically for a Monstrosoties and Undead. I thought that I could use Goblin for Monstrosoties (it's understood by Worgs at least) but I'm out of ideas for undead (fantasy Romanian?). I open to suggestions from anyone for appropriate language and/ or favoured enemies.

    @aguaracu

Hmm, well the thing about monstrosities is that they usually don't have a language. It's pretty rare for a Monstrosity to have a language, and when it does, it's usually something very specific to that creature.

As for undead, again there's no "common" undead language. If it's an undead shuldak, they'll speak shuldak and common. If it's an undead elf, it'll speak elvish. And if it was a human or other humanoid race, depending on where they were from, it could certainly speak any number of regional languages (Acilo, Sturian, Ocerian, or even the ancient languages like Aven or Tokru if the undead was really old or well-learned).

Basically, it's entirely racially and geographically dependent, but there's no single "undead language".

So, feel free to choose whatever seems fitting for the background you have for your character. If you protected the people from goblin incursions, then it makes a lot of sense to speak Goblin. If you dealt with giants, then choose Giantish. Or whatever other race. Your call!

In the Google Drive folder (linked in the OP), I've edited the Game Calendar spreadsheet to now include the list of starting items for everyone. These represent items that you've found in your adventures.

Under the "Requested By" column, indicate which item(s) you would like for your character. If there are multiple people interested in the same item after everyone has had a chance to go through and put in their choices, then you will need to discuss among yourselves who ends up getting the item. And please don't request every item :P

    Thanks everyone!

@SquirrelKing can I make a hard-request the potion of fire-breathing, just for this idea? XD

Also, seems I can't access the Discord server right now due to a "temporary outage" but I've made my claims to the loot sheet! I'll post in the server when I'm able, but I have no qualms with conceding to anyone who really wants a particular item.

@all: I'm happy with the build for Duncan as it is so, while I've requested several items, I'm not desperate for any of them. In any case, I'm assuming that we're not going to leave a party member to die so it doesn't matter too much who carries the restorative ointment or the healing potions.

@SK: I've put Goblin and Vadhol (Orcish) as Duncan's languages. I'm not sure if this setting has goblins?

I was too slow to use the discord link the first time, if you send another one I will try again. I am in a different time zone to the rest of you so don't expect too much from me real time.

I've tidied up Duncan's belongings and added a Fog Cloud spell scroll and some holy water.

Well, it looks like we've all figured out who gets what at this point, so whichever item has your name by it, make sure it gets to Duncan's character sheet. :)

This setting most assuredly has goblins. They're mostly in the hills and mountains in the western portion of the shire.

Sounds good. I've sent you a PM with the new invite link. Let me know if you have any troubles with it!

    Awesome, sounds great! Thanks man.

Alrighty, good to know that little bit is taken care of.

Also @SK, can we reskin the ruby as a sapphire? Considering that most of Mornok's spells are based in lightning magic I would rather work with blue over red as a primary color. (Also, it would match his "Speech text".

Reminder: game begins tomorrow at some point, likely afternoon/evening Eastern time. Please try to have all of your character equipment, stats, details, etc. finished by the time we start. Let me know if anyone has any outstanding questions! Thanks!

Stupid question: can you use thieves' tools without proficiency?

    Duncan is otherwise ready.
