Default Yarders of the Lambent Fields (Numenera)

Just to see if there is any interest, I present...

    Yarders of the Lambent Fields

    Background:
A shimmering wasteland. A business venture. A burial ground of the new gods. A sacred place of ancient worship and death. Depending on who you talk to, the Lambent Fields are all of those things and more.

Bordering the westernmost edge of the Clock of Kala, the Lambent Fields are more than 100 miles across and potentially just as deep (or deeper). The surface area is covered in multicolored dust that shines in the dimmest light. Enterprising individuals collect the dust and sell it to those who can afford it. The wealthy use the dust as decor for buildings, clothing, and their bodies.

Buried deep beneath the shimmering earth, however, is something of greater value, but no one can figure out what it is or, perhaps more important, what to do with it. Layers upon layers of metallic creations fill the earth, a numenera boneyard, ripe for the taking - or it would be if not for the political tensions running rampant in the nearby city of Picalah. The city has long claimed jurisdiction over the Lambent Fields and stationed a standing army around its borders to keep poachers away from the valuable materials. Businesses with the appropriate papers were allowed to send specially trained individuals called yarders to mine the fields as long as they tithed their proper percentage to the city.

Everything changed when a yarder unearthed the intact body of a giant mechanical creature. It had three heads and multiple limbs and would've stood at least three times taller than the average human. The creature bore symbols along its many limbs, and within two of its appendages were objects. The first was a ceramic bowl inscribed with similar markings. The second was what appeared to be a type of stone game piece, possibly an ancient die, bearing pictograms in its sides.

    Campaign Notes:
    Spoiler
    Show
    1) Campaign focused on exploration as the PCs collect dust and scavenge the hidden Numenera underneath while protecting themselves from hostile poachers, rival yarders, and perhaps corrupt Picalah military and civilian officials. Also, who knows how hostile some of the mechanical Numenera may be?

    2) The city of Picalah is ripe with political tension based around four factions vying for control of the city and the wealth of the Lambent Fields. These tensions have flared after the discovery of the Numenera creature:
    a) Stackle Spire is the city director. She believes the purpose of the Lambent Fields is to bring prosperity, fame, and a high quality of life to Picalah. She keeps the army at the field’s borders and continues to fight for the right to mine Numenera.
    b) Lorne Mamm is the Mag of the Populace Priory, a religious sect that believes the Lambent Fields belong to the gods and must be preserved as an open-air place of reverence and worship.
    c) Colten Gangy is the overseer of the Land Laws, a group of city natives who argue that the fields are a burial ground for giants. The whole area must be reburied out of respect for the dead. The group insists on replanting the land with a giant grove of trees to keep the dead happy and prevent them from rising to destroy the earth.
    d) Efrix Morle is the voice of the Lambent Order, a newly-founded sect of those who worship the Numenera. They argue Picalah must fund a careful excavation of the fields to look for more mechanical creatures and build a museum to protect and display their remains.

    3) The political infighting has reach a point of threatening to bring conventional mining operations to a standstill and many yarders find themselves turn poacher in order to continue their way of life and support their families. Anybody who makes a finding must be prepared to defend it.

    4) The PCs will start as licensed yarders but eventually the good times will end and suddenly they will find themselves unable to legally gather dust and mine Numenera and have to make a choice. Do they become poachers, or do they get involved in local politics? Perhaps they leave all together and try to find their fortune in the wilds of The Beyond.

    Spoiler
    Show
Dust is valuable, Numenera more so, and the vast repository of Numenera has tremendous potential for artifacts, cyphers, and various oddities to be uncovered. Playing their cards right, the PCs can find themselves both powerful and wealthy. The good times will not last forever as soon into the campaign the political instability of the city will pull the rug out from under the PCs. How will they respond? Will they choose a faction and seek to end the political deadlock or even fight in the streets if the situation turns violent? Will they turn rogue and evade not only bandits, but the army in pursuit of wealth and power? The choice will be up to the party and this will largely alter the level of roleplaying, politics, and combat they can expect to face.

    The 16
    Spoiler
    Show
    1. What game system are you running?
This is a Numenera game, utilizing the rules in the Discovery and Destiny books.

    2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be ? What is the setting for the game ?
This will be a standard Numenera game set near the Lambent Fields in the Beyond.

    3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?
In a perfect world there will be 4-6 players who are familiar with Numenera, but this will also be a new-player friendly game.

    4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?
OOTS. Numenera is an intensely narrative-driven game with fewer dice rolls. If there is interest, I will gladly play in Discord or Roll20.

    5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?
All players will start as beginning Tier 1 characters. Any of the six classes are allowed (Glaive, Jack, Nano, Arkus, Wright, and Delve)

    6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
Standard starting equipment per your chosen class and descriptor.

    7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
    None of these, please.

    8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
All players will be human. I don't want to have any visitant/abhuman players for this game.

    9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
Your Might, Speed, and Intellect will be generated per your descriptors, foci, and class.

    10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
Numenera has no alignment system. My general rule is to simply ask players to take no actions that would threaten party cohesion.

    11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
No multiclassing is in Numenera, I believe.

    12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
Die rolls are limited and can be used in the thread.

    13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.
    None of these

    14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
Some minor description of a character is appreciated. I don't expect everybody to have encyclopedic knowledge of the Numenera setting so feel free to make up whatever you wish.

    15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
I answered this under "Campaign Focus"

    16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
Please stick to the Destiny and Discovery rules, please.

Final Note: Even if you don't know how to play Numenera or make a character, worry not! I am happy to assist you in the process. Feel free to message me directly. Character creation is simple.

    Spoiler: Passionate
    Show
A fire burns in you. Whether that fire is for a person, a place, a people, a concept, or something else, you are driven by it. Passionate characters are sometimes champions for a cause or defenders of a faith. Or they might just be driven individuals. You might be seen as a hothead by some, temperamental and dangerous. But even if that’s true, you keep your word and take your commitments seriously, and it’s hard to find fault with that. You won’t let any challenge stand in your way. You charge right in.

CONNECTION: You were guided to the Lambent Fields by someone you deeply respect.

    Spoiler: Glaive
    Show
You’ve trained under excellent instructors and have experience in many dangerous situations, but what makes you different is deep inside, entwined in your genetic heritage. Maybe it was the luck of being born fit. Maybe you’re a hulking brute—a mountainous figure who commands attention when you enter a room. Or maybe your strength is more subtle; you might be the descendant of a bioengineered species bred (or designed) for perfection. Perhaps you’re a mutant with psychic abilities that augment your physical nature; you guide and enhance your attacks with telekinesis, or you use a natural mutation in your brain to control matter on a molecular level to resist blows and inflict harm. Perhaps you’re something wholly new: an aberration or a human so perfect that you’re beyond human. You might be a posthuman—the next step toward the true destiny of the people of the Ninth World.
CONNECTION: You saved the lives of a family when their house burned down. They’re indebted to you, and their neighbors regard you as a hero.

Spoiler: Shreds the Walls of the World
    Show
When you move, your body changes state and becomes partially phased, reflecting a bizarre alternate dimension where distance and time are different than they are in the Ninth World. It’s only when you’re still that you remain solid and fully part of the real world. Sometimes that’s a relief, but other times you feel like you’re stuck in wet sand. Moving is your key to changing phase—and perhaps happiness.
While you’re phased, you skate along the surface of reality far more quickly than others. Such rapid movement across normal reality sometimes leaves behind scratches, which you can selectively make, suppress, or bear down upon to create particularly devastating attacks and, eventually, phase detonations.
You got your ability because you’re descended from an entity that hailed from the bizarre dimension of altered distance and time, because you were touched and ultimately spared by an encounter with the iron wind, or because of a mechanism that you carry or that is embedded in you. You probably wear clothing designed to stay out of your way, because the less you carry, the less likely you are to come out of phase prematurely.
CONNECTION: Something about [PC], interferes with your abilities. When they stand next to you, your focus abilities cost 1 additional point.

    Skills:
    Balance [Trained]
    Climbing [Trained]
    Running [Trained]
    Swimming [Trained]
    Abilities:
Combat Prowess: You add +1 damage to melee attacks. Enabler.
Cypher Use: You can bear two cyphers at a time.
Fever: You are a devil when angered, inflicting 1 additional point of damage with any attack.
Fire Inside: You gain one asset to an action when doing so can be justified by your passion. You can do this only once, but its use is restored each time you make a recovery roll.
Trained in Armor: You can wear armor for long periods of time without tiring and can compensate for slowed reactions from wearing armor. You reduce the Speed Effort cost for wearing armor by 1. Enabler.
Weapons: You can use any weapon without penalty.
    Fighting Moves:
Misdirect (3 Speed points): When an opponent misses you, you can redirect their attack to another target (a creature or object) of your choosing that’s within immediate range of you. Make an unmodified attack roll against the new target (do not use any of your or the opponent’s modifiers to the attack roll, but you can apply Effort for accuracy). If the attack hits, the target takes damage from your opponent’s attack. Enabler.
Trained Without Armor: You are trained in Speed defense actions when not wearing armor. Enabler.
    Foci Abilities
Tier 1: Phase Sprint (1+ Speed points): You can run up to a long distance as long as you take no other actions. During your action and until the beginning of your next turn, you are partially phased, and some attacks pass through you harmlessly. While phased, you gain an asset to your Speed defense tasks, but you lose any benefit from armor you wear. Note that some of your other special abilities enable specific actions that you can take while using Phase Sprint. For instance, when using Disrupting Touch, you can make one touch attack while moving (though this ends your movement). Action.
Disrupting Touch (1+ Might points): You can turn your Phase Sprint into a melee attack by purposefully grazing another creature as you run. When you do, the touch releases a violent blast of energy that inflicts 2 points of damage to the target (ignores Armor). Whether you hit or miss, your movement (and turn) ends immediately, which puts you within immediate distance of your target. If you apply Effort to increase damage rather than to ease the task, you deal 2 additional points of damage per level of Effort (instead of 3 points); the target takes 1 point of damage even if you fail the attack roll. Enabler.
    Drawbacks:
Inability: Your temper is hard to control. Tasks requiring restraint or subtlety, including sneaking or lying, are hindered.
Inability Crafting numenera, salvaging numenera, and understanding numenera.
    Cyphers & Oddities:
Density Nodule: [Crystal nodule affixed to Razor Ring; Cypher lvl [roll0]] Effect: For the next 28 hours, each time the weapon the nodule is attached to strikes a solid creature or object, the weapon suddenly increases dramatically in weight, causing the blow to inflict an additional 2 points of damage.
Rejuvenator: [Spider-like nodule affixed at base of neck; Cypher lvl [roll1]] Effect: Substance restores a number of points equal to the Cypher’s level [4] to Speed Pool.
Synth Tile: A 2" by 3" flat piece of synth that has something printed on one side. Each viewer sees something different. You see a picture of a young woman with luminescent green hair and eyes. [Oddity]

    Spoiler: Background
    Show
Chase was born in an enclave beyond the Black Riage, where the founders collected, studied and revered Numenera. However, unlike the Order of Truth, they felt that Numenera and Cypher's held the key to unlocking mankind's potential and ascending to the 10th Age. Their beliefs were so heretical it drew the attention of the Amber Pope and the Order itself. They descended on the enclave with sudden, fierce, savagery, killing or capturing the peaceful Nano's who had established the enclave generations ago. Chase's mentor, Tahsan, was captured, however to prevent the young Glaive from suffering the same fate, he instructed his ward to flee into the Black Riage.

Chase did as he was intructed, eluding capture, as he recalled a salvage site used by Tahsan. As he approached the site, the Iron Wind descended on the area, and so, seeking shelter, Chase fled into a crevasse, only to tumble down it's steep incline and lost consciousness. He had accidentally discovered what his mentor was seeking at the site, an artifact from a previous Age, which allowed it's user to cross the threshold between time and space. His body was disassembled at a cellular level, and recombined, repeatedly as he was trapped within the sequencing chamber. In time he acclimatized to the nightmarish pain of this process, allowing him to regain consciousness, he suffered an intense flash, as his surroundings took on a crisp, blue hue, as though viewed from somewhere just outside the world. He then collapsed to the floor, however, he was outside the sequencer. Exhaustion washed over him as he collapsed, and when he finally awoke he was, inexplicably, in the remains of Tahsan's salvage site, stripped clean by the Iron Wind. However, there was no sign of the entrance to the sequencer that he had previously discovered.

He wandered south, towards the Steadfast, determined to rescue his mentor from the Amber Pope, and to discover the nature of the Artifact that had so completely altered him into something, not entirely human. And so, a few months ago, he found himself north of the Lambent Fields, inexplicable drawn to the shimmering multi colored sands. There he discovered a local man, Tarth, who was designs into the sand, surveying the area, his reverence for it reminded Chase of the nano's whom studied at the enclave of his youth. After a discussion on the nature of the Fields, Tarth surmised, that Chase had no home of his own, and so invited him to his home for a meal, where he met the man's wife, and their young daughter. He spent near two weeks at the Tarth homestead, working labor jobs to pay his way, when some Order of Truth templars come through the area. He hid amidst the livestock, but that night he noted that the house itself was on fire, so he rescued the Tarth's drawing their praise. He was uncomfortable with it, as he couldn't shake the suspicion that the fire and the Templar's appearance were not a coincidence, and that, by his presence he had put the family's lives in danger, so he made his farewells and began the journey to Picalah, as Tarth had indicated if he wanted to avoid the Order he could hide amongst the yarders and the sands of the Lambent Fields.

    Spoiler: Chakram Shield & Slicer

Basic idea is that his main hand Chakram has a sharp edge for cutting, and spikes for thrusting, however, his offhand Chakram is of sturdier build, and meant to parry & block incoming attacks and is used as a small shield.

You’re self-assured, which helps in almost every situation—at least situations where violence is not involved. Fortunately, because you’re so self-confident and positive, you’re usually able to steer situations away from violent endings. It’s possible that your
confidence makes you seem levelheaded and cool in a tough situation, or your confidence could make you eager to prove your skills when the going gets rough—it’s up to you. Either way, others eventually learn that you’re confident for a good reason.

CONNECTION: I was asked for help, condfident I can provide what's necessary.

    Spoiler: Background
    Show
I ran away from my parents farm when I was young, my Mentor Felund took me and I accompanied him on his travels. He knew much and taught me what to look for in the ruins and lost places, as well as keeping me safe as I came of age. As we wondered around so much, we were each others only real friends for many years.
CONNECTION: My friend was remade by the iron wind, I had to put him down. Only thing I've ever really hesitated to do.

    Spoiler: See's Beyond
    Show
Unlike most people, you know there are far more than three dimensions, more colors than can be found in the rainbow, and more things in the world than most can see, sense, or even understand. With practice and help (through drugs, lenses, manipulated energy fields, or a combination of all three), you can perceive things that others cannot.
What you see in other dimensions has changed your understanding of even the most basic things like weapon and dress. Where others might see your drab outfit and plain weapons, you see something entirely different—myriad colors and patterns that showcase your unique vision of the world. Your
weapons likely bear marks of other dimensions as well.

Someone wearing the gloves could also search behind walls and under floors using the gloves. The gloves retain their phasing ability for up to one minute per cypher level. Spoiler: Background
    Show
Syl was born on a farm in the Beyond just east of the Black Riage, outside of steadfast it wasn't the safest area, but it was still... mundane and Syl was a girl who just beleived what she did would work and it usually did. Soon bored of the limits of what her parents had her do she saw her opportunity when a travelling Nano passed through and did some minor esotories in exchange for a place to stay. Syl was fascinated.
She followed the Nano for several days after she left, before he discovered her and after begging and pleading to not be taken back he took her on as an apprentice of sorts. She lacked the patience for the life of a Nano, but did have a knack for getting into places and finding stuff, he taught her what to look for and tried to keep her mindful of dangers.
As she came of age their relationship changed to more partners than mentor/student and they worked together for a while, until the fateful day when they were caught in an Iron Storm. Syl only realised too late that Felund had fallen behind and not made it to the hidey-hole to wait out the storm. She spent the night listening to the wails, unable to tell if it was from the wind or the her friend. When the storm passed there was a pathetic muling creature where her mentor had been flesh warped and despite her efforts it seemed the mind was gone too. Unable to leave him in that state she put him out of his misery and walked away.
She joined up wiht the numenera mining in Lambent Fields to grieve in her own way, and rediscovered her passion for digging and finding.

    Spoiler: Appearance

The first thing anyone notices about Syl is her eyes. Which are entirely featureless silver (though some insist that they sometimes swirl with a faint colour), she was not born that way, but drips a liquid into them each morning to enhance her vision. Years of doing so seems to have given her this side effect.

I'm tentatively interested, most likely a Glaive, perhaps tied to another Yarder by relationship, loyalty, or employment. Providing them with protection from poachers, or other such, in exchange for a new life where he can hide from his past.

Anybody interested in starting out knowing one another?

I think default cyphers would be easiest for this format.

Hey Grognard, if you go Nano, we could say that my Glaive helps protect your claim, and the anonymity provided by being a harder helps him hide from an organization he fears is hunting him.

Let's set the deadline for Wednesday, August 28th.

Does anybody know of an online sheet for Numenera/Cypher? Myth-Weavers doesn't appear to have one and I would prefer not to use a forum spoiler if it can be helped.

In general, Numenera encourages such links between PCs. In this game you are all already part of a team so I definitely encourage such discussion.

Well, since there's no Jack yet, I'll go ahead and fill the spot.

My initial thoughts are a Mystical Jack Who Crafts Illusions - lots of useful abilities that would be synergistic together and useful for a Lander.

Not sure on a connection, so I'll let the dice decide (page 45)

    Chase the Hunted
A Passionate Glaive who Shreds the World

    Spoiler: Appearance

    Spoiler: Mechanics
    Show
    Might Pool: 13
    Edge: 1
    Speed Pool: 14
    Edge: 1
    Intellect Pool: 7
    Edge: 0

Density Nodule: [Crystal nodule affixed to Razor Ring; Cypher lvl (1d6)[6]] Effect: For the next 28 hours, each time the weapon the nodule is attached to strikes a solid creature or object, the weapon suddenly increases dramatically in weight, causing the blow to inflict an additional 2 points of damage.
Rejuvenator: [Spider-like nodule affixed at base of neck; Cypher lvl (1d6+2)[4]] Effect: Substance restores a number of points equal to the Cypher’s level [4] to Speed Pool.
Synth Tile: A 2" by 3" flat piece of synth that has something printed on one side. Each viewer sees something different. You see a picture of a young woman with luminescent green hair and eyes. [Oddity]
    Starting Equipment:
Chakram Slicer [Light Weapon; 2 Damage; Ease Attack Roll]
    Chakram Shield [Speed Defense Asset]
    Clothes; Travelling
    Explorer's Pack
    Barter & Currency:
    Shins: 5

    Show
Basic idea is that his main hand Chakram has a sharp edge for cutting, and spikes for thrusting, however, his offhand Chakram is of sturdier build, and meant to parry & block incoming attacks and is used as a small shield.

For my and everyone else’s reference:

    Connection:

You’re in love with a local shopkeeper, but that person shows little interest in you.

    Background:

    Born Lucky [‘designed’ human, etc]

    Adventure link:

You believed the mission would be a great way to learn more about the numenera.

    PC link:

Pick one other PC. They have a special angle on your illusions and can sometimes point out potential places of weakness.

    Powers origin:

Intentional or accidental immersion in or treatment with ancient chemicals or radiation.

Should have the crunch mostly done today; should also be able to expand on background stuff and PC link(s).

What are people's thoughts about Discord? There are a few elements of Numenera's mechanics that can be tricky on a PBP format.

I am super down for Discord. I'm running by own PbP Eberron campaign and we started off using forums, but it was a PITA to access for some folks. We moved to Discord and never looked back.

To that end, I made us a server! I'm working today so I'm here to chat until 8:30 EST-ish.

Well, I have been a bit slow to respond, and for that I am sorry.

I am thinking of a Nano with mental powers of detection. Perhaps someone who is also good at personal interactions.

    How does that sound?

If you wanted to say that you're down for hiding Chase's origins from the Aeon Church, we could start off knowing one another perhaps. Maybe you even know Tarth the farmer I saved on the north side of the Fields, and he directed me to you, knowing you were a Nano and had the abilities to conceal my presence. If that works.

I have zero familiarity with Discord. If you are willing to coach me, I have no problem. I am very familiar with the boards here, though.

Why not. Perhaps I can work in my story that I also had problems with the Aeon church, so we know each other from a while back.

Question: We are supposed to be salvagers. Does anyone of us know how to salvage?

I will also say that I don't intend to use the voice portion. Right now this will remain a PBP game unless everybody is on board. My current plan is to keep it as an opportunity to contact me and get a quicker response. Whenever someone posts on that Discord channel I get an immediate notification on my phone.

If you're willing to accept a newby to the boards, I'm down for Numenera, I'm currently running a game irl so I'm familiar with the rules, less so with the boards/discord.

I see few completed sheets, but as far as I can see you have 2 Glaives a Jack and a Nano. Might try one of the 'new' classes, as the game I'm running started before the newer books and I can try one out.

That will make five players total so I will go ahead and close this thread to new interest.

He knew much and taught me what to look for in the ruins and lost places, as well as keeping me safe as I came of age. As we wondered around so much, we were each others only real friends for many years.

What you see in other dimensions has changed your understanding of even the most basic things like weapon and dress. Where others might see your drab outfit and plain weapons, you see something entirely different—myriad colors and patterns that showcase your unique vision of the world. Your

When the storm passed there was a pathetic mewling creature where her mentor had been flesh warped and despite her efforts it seemed the mind was gone too. Unable to leave him in that state she put him out of his misery and walked away.
She joined up with the numenera mining in Lambent Fields to grieve in her own way, and rediscovered her passion for digging and finding.

    Spoiler: Appearance
    Show

The first thing anyone notices about Syl is her eyes. Which are entirely featureless silver (though some insist that they sometimes swirl with a faint colour), she was not born that way, but drips a liquid into them each morning to enhance her vision. Years of doing so seems to have given her this side effect.

Kinda stumped on fluff though, the book doesn't really go out and list a lot of stuff to be from and I'm not great at creating things wholesale.
The name is "tonberrian", even when it begins a sentence. It's magic, I ain't gotta 'splain why.
