    Gag me with a spoon.

There a very few good books written for teenagers (or approximately that age) that are worth reading. Skip them entirely and go straight to the adult section. There are plots that don't stereotype people; with magic and dragons and murers and conspiracy theories and so. Much. Fun. Stuff.

If you can't tell I'm horribly against them.
Try reading the books by Brian Caswell. In particular I recommend A Cage of Butterflies, Merryll of the Stones, Double Exposure and Deucalion. I would highly recommend him, even to adults.

I guess teenage books are one of those things I never really did. Or I can't remember, but then I can't remember much of my entire childhood.

What I did read where either adult fantasy, which I stopped completely just because I don't have the time and there's greater literature out there than fantasy, and historical or semi-historical books.

Right now I'm only reading history books and classical literature, there's enough great writings in there that I don't miss other stories.

To be honest though, I've read Stanislav Lem though this summer. The book was quite good even though I despise the whole sci-fi genre even more than fantasy.

So here I sit, watchin' the news, and this human interest story comes on. (Don't worry, it's a happy one.)

This 6th grade class goes to this place called "Crater of Diamonds State Park" in Arkansas on a field trip. Teacher's been takin' kids there for years, she says. No one's ever found anything. You're just supposed to see how it's done. But this girl, nooooo, she has to hit pay dirt. Literally. She found a 1.23 carat diamond on her dig. In its current form it's appraised at around $800. If she lets someone cut it, it's value increases by a factor of 10.

Not bad for a day's work, huh?

My schools never took me to places like that, I can tell ya.

I strongly disagree. I'm in my twenties now, and I still like Tamora Pierce. Some of her books have a bit of romance, and a couple have some people (male and female) with magic powers saving the world, but these features are well in the minority. I also recommend John Marsden, I think the book Siren by Donna Jo Napoli would probably count, and even Ella Enchanted (don't let that bloody movie fool you ). It's just like any other genre - that is, just as full of crap - but if anything, I think it's improving.
Also, The Monster at the End of this Book is one of my favourite books ever. It even has a sequel!

You can't? You're just looking in the wrong places. You can even find treasures with your bare hands here, most of them Celtic or Roman relics.

The bad part is, the laws in this country declare that every treasure found in National Ground belongs to the Nation. So I should just go to somewhere where the "Finder's Keepers" rule applies.

Tamora is an amazing writer. I love her books.

Immortals and her Winding Circle sets are probably my favourites out of her books...

Ah, we have that too. Most give two thirds of it and keep the rest though. It's not like one could prove you have not given everything if you found it in the woods.

Oh. At my library, all those books are in the "children's" section, not "young adult". I've also seen Susan Fletcher's books in both. And...oh geez, a whole host of other amazing stuff.

What's wrong with wish-fulfilllment in general? What's wrong with it in fiction? And if there's something wrong with it in fiction and if it's impossible in RL, then where the heck is it both possible and OK?

No, I mean, I'm afraid I don't actually like her writing as much as the fact it's the only happy set of books I own. I mean, I'm not sure I DISLIKE her writing, but there's nothing particularly special about it, that I can see anyway.
