Non-linear community world building
Edited to remove the restriction to include Magic the Gathering cards!
Hi everyone!
Inspired by my past world building games I would like to try some non-linear community driven world buildingwith Magic: The Gathering cards.
I was imagining the following:
We create together a world history by posting new entries in a timeline in a non-chronological fashion, meaning you can create new "Events" or "Scenes" before, after or between existing events, to set up something new to flesh out something already posted, create a backstory for an existing thing, or establish something completely new.
With the caveat that every Event or Scene you post has to be inspired by a Magic: The Gathering Card. You can interpret your card as you want: you may take inspiration from the art, the flavor text, the mechanics or the name to set something up in the emerging world. You can pick your card or use the random card feature to draw a couple of cards until you find one that inspires you.
Mechanically this means:
1. We have a list of Scenes or Events you can edit, by inserting your Scene anywhere you want. Highlight your new scene in bold red (and revert everything else back to normal black). In order to keep this manageable, this also means your scene should be just one or two sentences long (keep it short!).
2. Before the description of your Scene you post a link to a Magic the Gathering card in the Gatherer so people can check it out easily. This might look something like this:
Our History
- The Beginning
Llanowar Reborn:The First Forest starts to grow from a seedling that survived the destruction of the World Before- The End
Which would be our starting point for the game! Feel free to post anything you want, this is free for all. Just copy the complete History from the previous post into your answer and start to have fun (just no back to back posts)!
EDIT: I am dropping the Magic Card restriction. From now on you can just create a new event without the need to link to a Magic card. If you want you can still do so or link to something else that inspired you but it isn't necessary!Last edited by Wasp; 2019-09-13 at 06:19 PM.

Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief: The Vampire Tribes, who long ago established their independence after a lengthy revolution, refuse to return to rejoin the former nations despite attempted annexation, and threaten a second Shadow Wars as a result. - The End

Re: Non-linear community world building with Magic The Gathering cards
Yes, this is inspired by Microscope - without any of the restrictions *g*. We'ss see how that works out...
And yes, no knowledge of Magic is needed. The cards are only there for inspiration.

- Llanowar Reborn: The First Forest starts to grow from a seedling that survived the destruction of the World Before

- Abzan Advantage: The Eastern Kingdoms take advantage of the raging Blood War between the different Vampire factions inside the Dark Empire and free the vampire occupied lands East of the Ironwood Mountains
- The End

This is turning into a very dark world.

- Winter OrbPressed hard by the renewed Ironwood campaign, Abagor takes desperate measures and uses one of the artefacts of the first creation, the Winter Orb, to usher in the Long Night.

Re: Non-linear community world building with Magic The Gathering cards
Well, a tiny bit maybe...
But the fun is de to the non-linear nature we can also create very light areas. We do not have to pick up on the wars if we don't want to and instead introduce a period of progress and peace or create something at the other end of the world.
I think it's entirely possible to introduce some light. Not everything has to be about those wars but of course it's also fun to pick up the threads of the posters before you. Therefore I#ll try to turn the Long Night into something more postive... through Werewoves

- Winter Orb: Pressed hard by the renewed Ironwood campaign, Abagor takes desperate measures and uses one of the artefacts of the first creation, the Winter Orb, to usher in the Long Night.
- Moonlight Hunt: Unforseen by Abagor, the Long Night not only strengthens the Vampires but also allows the Moon Elves to use their magic to bring back the banished Werewolves from the Gloaming Wild and send them against their old vampiric enemies
- The End
