    I placed my character in a place I saw appropriate, in the front in a similar position to their boss just on the opposite side of the wagon.

    Marcus / Man On Fire, you might want to wait until everyone's initiative is rolled to declare your actions. We'll hold onto them as your first rolls, but the other creatures may move before your initiative comes up. Feel free to revise if you wish. Otherwise I will assume you move towards the nearest enemy and attack.

    Could I assume Cael had already cast Mage armor earlier? Since the area sounds dangerous enough that getting into a fight isn't unexpected.

    That's fine for the beginning of the campaign. In the future, you'll have to declare that you're casting it so I can track duration, etc.

    Since I have the longbow of warning and a Passive perception of 21, do I still need the perception check? If not, anyone within 30 of me is also not surprised from the longbow's effect.

    EDIT: Welp, guess it didn't matter on the perception check. on the 30 ft range, how are you treating diagonals in this campaign? 5 ft, or 5ft then 10ft then 5 ft, etc?

    Good call. Anyone within 30 feet of you automatically passes their Perception check and is not surprised.

    Edit: Put myself on the map, should be within the 30' range. My speed is such that the difficult terrain shouldn't be too much of an issue.

    It's late mid-day - you were on track to be in Drellin's Ferry by sunset.

    Could you please reposition Eti so that she's within two squares of one of the wagons. That's where all the PCs will be starting when combat breaks out. Those within 30 feet of Tavi will not be surprised, but there's still a chance you could be surprised if you're farther away.

    Alright, so while we wait for ProudGrognard, here's how the first round will play out:

    Freya and Tavi go first - feel free to post your actions.

    Tavi, your Insight Check is successful, so if you hit, feel free to add your Sneak Attack damage.

    However, unless you move to a better position, you will have to roll your attack at a disadvantage because the Warpriest is barely in sight. The ridge and the area around you is higher ground and with the distance to the Warpriest, you don't have a great shot. It's a DC 10 Athletics check to hop on top of the wagon otherwise you'll have to get up the ridge. It counts as difficult terrain.

    Then it'll be the Captain, Hellhounds and the Warpriest, since Volarine is surprised and misses her action this Initiative round.

    After those three, Marcus and Cael will take their turns, Etienne being surprised this round.

    Finally, the Hobgoblin regulars will go and then we're out of the surprise round and back to the top of the Order.

    Hobgoblin Archers
    Back to Top

    And we'll slot Proud/Noman in wherever depending on their rolls.

    I think Surprised only lasts for my first turn of Combat and I have a high Initiative.

    I kinda jumped the gun, but yeah, you can assume Marcus tries to get towards the Hobgoblin captain and fights first enemy blocking his path, which will likely be the hellhound.

    Just be careful where you stand so you don't end up inside the Stinking Cloud effect. I think the Hellhound is just inside the border of the spell, so you should have a spot to melee it.
