Default [D&D 5e] Redwall themed game

Would anybody be interested in GMing and/or playing a game based off of the Redwall books by Brian Jacques?

We might have to up the level of fantasy a bit and only ban a few classes that truly do not fit the setting in any way like the Warlock.

Or we could keep it low fantasy, not have any classes that can cast spells, have no combat healing beyond the Healer feat, only one or two magic items in the entire world, no currency if we are really sticking to the books, and really challenge ourselves.

Here are the Redwall Races I have written up, please keep any suggestions and critiques to them on that thread.

Setting information down at post #8 and Big 16 in post #9

I've actually made a character sheet in my spare time...granted it's only about 70% done since I still need a few more numbers and a lot of flavored background, but still I plan to use it if we get this off the ground.

Assuming we start at Level 1 and go by the normal Point Buy system, allow me to introduce Scarlet, the Fox Rogue.

I am interested in GMing this. I once tried to brew an organized redwall-themed ruleset for 5e, but that was too much effort for so little of results (pun not intended)

I will hurriedly read through your list of Redwall Races, and then be back with a Big 16. Or a little 16, as the case may be.

In the meantime, for those unfamiliar with the setting, here is a smattering of information about Redwall.

    Spoiler: Redwall
    Show
    History
Redwall Abbey was built following the destruction and flooding of Kotir, an ancient castle in Mossflower Woods ruled by Tsarmina Greeneyes. Construction took more than 20 seasons.

The survivors of the Loamhedge Abbey plague came to Mossflower country, led by Abbess Germaine to start anew. She designed the blueprints.

Along with the woodlanders of Mossflower and other Loamhedge survivors, the Abbey was built out of red sandstone from a neighboring quarry, with the intentions for the building to be a place of peace for all.

A tapestry was woven in the Great Hall dedicated to Martin the Warrior. After his death, he was entombed beneath the Abbey.

While it is ordained to be a peaceful location, many times a warrior is called upon from the residents to combat a threat against this peace.

The residents of Redwall name the Seasons every year after some large occurrence. Young citizens of the Abbey are called Dibbuns.

The unwritten rule of Redwall Abbey is that "Redwall mice can go anywhere, through any territory, and pass unharmed."

    Spoiler: The Abbey Charter
    Show
The Redwall Abbey Charter is as follows:

To be brothers and sisters of peace and goodwill while living together under the protection of Redwall Abbey.
Forsake all unnecessary forms of violence, not only to Mossflower, its trees, grasses, flowers and insects, but to all living creatures.
    Help and comfort the dispossessed.
    Harbor orphans and waifs.
Offer shelter to all creatures alike.
Give clothing, warmth and food to any beast or creature that is deemed in need of such.
Educate and learn, particularly in the healing arts, comfort the sick, nurse the injured and help the wounded.
Take food from the earth and replenish the land by caring for it; husbanding crops, living in harmony with the seasons always.
To honor and protect friends and brethren, only raising paw to do battle when life at Redwall is threatened by treachery and the shadow of war; at these times every Redwall creature should show courage, fortitude and obedience to the Father Abbot. The taking of another life must always be justified and never carried out in a wanton manner.

    1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)? 5e
    2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)? Redwall Setting
    3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many? We have 4. Maybe 1 more
    4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)? Oots forum
    5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)? Let's say 2nd
    6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with? Starting equipment or bought with starting gold
    7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes? Let's make it low magic. So no magic users, except clerics and paladins.
    8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species? The Redwall races
    9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points? 4d6b3, max 1st level hp, rolled after.
    10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so? Nah
    11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it? Nah rules
    12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them? Roll yours using the dice roller. I'll be doing mine outside of the game for the sake of brevity.
    13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules. JNA's Flanking
    14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)? An average sized paragraph
    15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above? Hack and slash and roleplaying. Maybe one puzzle.
    16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters? PHB/XGTE for classes and spells, Redwall Races for races.

Please please PLEASE modify Flanking to not be outright advantage! It's way too good if you do!

If I may suggest, try including a +1 bonus for each other ally adjacent to an enemy. With an extra +1 if you're directly opposite.

Edit: I am quite happy with stats, though.

    Okay, sounds good.

BTW to all peeps in the game the point of Clerics and Paladins being in the game is for the Abbots and Warriors of Redwall. A rodent-person of those classes would be in training to become one of those and follow the Redwall ideals.

    Nala

    Spoiler: Backstory
    Show
Nala was born to unknown parents, dropped off on the doorstep to Redwall in a basket with a flute in it.

No one saw who left her behind, but the people of Redwall, being good folk, took her in and raised her. She grew up a curious girl, always asking questions and getting into trouble. She always had a knack for sneaking around and getting places people didn't want her, but she never caused any real harm. Some people were quite surprised to find her in their closet or somewhere else unexpected, but not once was anything taken, nor was anyone hurt. Eventually, the warriors and leaders of Redwall decided to ask her to put her skills to good use. She agreed in a heartbeat-of course she'd help her family here! So, she was taught how to wield weapons, though it's not something she enjoys doing.

She's often sent out on scouting runs, just surveying the area, as she's very fast, very sneaky, and very good at getting way in case sneakiness fails.

I have very fond memories of Redwall from my younger days but I do have a question that I donít recall. Apart from clerical magic (which I remember to be vague)...is there arcane magic of the sort of a bard or wizard?

The "Seers" (like the fox that tried to trick Cluny and end up on top) are complete frauds.

The only real magic is reincarnation, the spirit of Martin the Warrior, as well as the madness afflicting the Badgers which puts them in a rage and gives them accurate visions.

Sure. I went and found this Spell-Less Bard.

I don't know where the "Primeval Thule" part of the name comes in, but it looks like a balanced, de-magicked version of the bard.

EDIT: Apparently, Primeval Thule is a savage, low magic campaign setting. The more you know.

I might see how things pan out for my bard idea:

    (4d6)[1][6][2][2](11)
    (4d6)[4][5][1][5](15)
    (4d6)[4][2][2][2](10)
    (4d6)[6][3][4][3](16)
    (4d6)[2][6][4][1](13)
    (4d6)[1][4][2][4](11)

That is...subpar. Still might give it a shot.

Yeah, I would like to have a re-roll if possible. Otherwise that 6 is going into INT and the character will be riding the short cart to dibbuns school.

Sure, you can have a re-roll. And if that's not good either, you can have standard array.

Here's a spell-less ranger from the same source as the spell-less bard. I don't know how we'll reflavor the beast companion ability, but the world of Redwall does have horses pulling carts full of rats, and they're just as sapient as real life horses. So perhaps a pony would have to end up being the choice here
