    Default Found Some Stars

So on a random itch I started reading Starfinder and now I would like to play a game. I have no particular requests besides it being at least level 15. Or if a lower level it'd be nice if the game would be of a decent length.

Sadly, you just missed the recruitment for my Attack of the Swarm AP ... at it's planned length it'll take players from 1 to 12. However, as I am running that one, I would love to play in a Starfinder game if you find one. Probably Soldier, possibly Solarion, maybe Mechanic, depends what strikes my fancy, but yeah, I fell in love with the game, myself, about two months ago.

Actually that game is what got me to look into Starfinder lol. Most likely gonna be a Mechanic myself, but I can already tell there's gonna be a lot I'll want to try.

Ditto. I have a Soldier (Icon) I once made but never got to play. Kind of a 'Captain America' type character. I could easily level him up to whatever level the GM decides.

Yea I'm thinking Human Icon Technomage or Scholar Mechanic. Argh, wish I could do both! Either way they work for a science company ran by their extended family. Their would be intrigued as the try to get information and resources. Morally gray people, so it could be a pseudo villian or anti hero ordeal.

So how are starships typically handled? I mean if the PCs own it do they have to operate it all by themselves or can there be NPCS that help? Asking for a friend. Asking so I can know what size of ship to aim for.

Most starships default to 4 and 6 man crews, think Millenium Falcon or Serenity. There are various roles, Captain, Engineer, Pilot, Science, and gunners. A starship turn is broken up into phases, Piloting Phase, Engineering Phase, Scanning Phase, Firing Phase, with the Capatain able to act during any one phase he wishes. Each phase is tied to a specific skill, Piloting for Piloting, Engineering for Engineering, Computers for Science, and Piloting or BAB for Fire phase. Captain can use Diplomacy or Intimidation to provide bonuses.

Well at level one your unlikely to have a ship higher than 1st Tier, so I'd start there.

I'm assuming for Tier 10 to 14 ships which have crews of 100 to 200, that the players would be 'Department Heads', so perhaps directing engineering crews and what not, so using Teamwork and such to assist some rolls.

Perhaps is you make premade ships, but making them the necessary crew depends on the frame. Specifically I was wanting a Heavy Freighter but that needs a crew of 20.

I'm a fan of smaller ships myself. If our characters are basically corporate spies for the family biz then something a little lighter than a heavy freighter would be good for getting in and out of sticky areas.

I'm not hugely opposed to a larger ship, but unless the GM goes out of their way to make space conflict relevant in my experience the specifics of the ship end up being setting backdrop most of the time anyway.

I guess I did mention info grabbing, but i wasn't thinking spies exactly. Anyways that's as far as my character goes, your character may not exactly be that way. Which reminds me I was considering asking what your other characters may be about. But yea I like the idea of a smaller ship, but I want a lot of add ons. Basically the ship would be like a yacht/exploration vessel more than anything. Though if it's big enough I may see if we can get a fighter and/or shuttle.

Hmm not sure if i want power armor or not. They got cool features, but not as many augment slots.

Fair enough, since I'm looking at operative I'll pretty much automatically be a decent spy type at 15th level (if we end up starting that high) so I guess I was making a few assumptions based on that.

My (very basic, to be modified based on campaign specs) idea is a freelance infiltration specialist, ideally with a good enough reputation for discretion that companies don't feel the need to take me out after the job is done. If you're familiar with shadowrun at all kind of like the stereotypical runner, except in space and not quite so removed from general society.

edit: and power armor is mostly good for switch hitting soldiers, if you don't plan to do that then light/heavy armor is generally a better investment from what I've seen.

Yea, I would never be crazy enough to run the game at 15th level, it gets pretty outrageous, especially considering the stat boosts, the gear, the augments, and such, you'd be pumping out ridiculous damage and making DC 35 skill checks easy.

1st is a professional in your chosen field of expertise, 3rd is bad ass, 15th, you are Warhammer 40k Spacemarines, taking on wave upon wave of the Swarm all by yourself. 15th is not a great place to learn the game in my opinion.

I mean, level 1 is a professional in the sense that someone who just got the requisite degree for a job is a professional. Sure, in theory you have all the qualifications, but you're not exactly a reliable source of expertise (this isn't a bad thing mind you, just a thing), 3rd is legit professional, 6th-ish is badass, and it goes up from there. While 15 seems a little high to me to learn the game too, if you're familiar with rpgs in general I understand the desire to not start at the bottom. Level 10 or so puts you firmly in the realm of hardcore but not a god, especially since starfinder's setting includes a higher percentage of double digit level characters than most fantasy worlds.

Different expectations really, your scale wouldn't fit too well at my table, but I get to each their own. Character classes, at my table, are heroic, period. hands down. A level 1 soldier can expect to be more competent, better trained, and better equipped, than an NPC soldier in almost every situation. A squad of soldiers guarding Absalom Station do not have fighting styles, do not have bonus feats, etc, etc. That's how I make my distinction.

I put John McLean at level 3 ... Die Hard on Absalom Station ... suddenly the idea is appealing. LOL.

As I said each table has there own preferences, nobody's arguing a right way, or wrong way to have fun. I'm just sharing my opinions and what works for me and my table. Thankfully the conversation is keeping this thread close to the top for recruitment, and visible to any potential Starfinder GM!

Eh, my bad I guess. I took it as you saying not to play a level 15 game. And yea being close to the top is fine I guess, but it really doesn't look like anything is gonna get shaking soon. I'm still pre-making my character just in case as I find I have a habit of lagging or being indecisive.

Suppose I'm leaning toward not have power armor so I can save cash and feats.

john mcclane in die hard 1 probably is about level 3. he's not actually particularly superhuman or hardcore in that one, just fairly tough and clever.

and I didn't mean to say we shouldn't be playing at 15th level either, just offering an alternative in case a GM that was aiming for a longer game came along. sorry for the confusion.

I've been really hoping for a Starfinder game, too. I've been eager to play a half-orc, once enslaved by the drow, now just trying to get by in a fairly unfriendly universe with a bounty (due to the drow) on her head. A soldier with the outlaw background!
