    Mummy's Mask



    This is a re-recruitment thread for our ongoing Adventure Path, Mummy's Mask. We've been playing this AP for several years and are presently in the middle of Book 3. Following the departure of one player, we're currently left with 3 PCs, and I feel this has made our game less dynamic of late. Therefore I would like to recruit 1 to 2 new players to bring new ideas and fresh energy to the table.

    Feel free to read part or all (or none) of the 3 IC threads (#1, #2, #3), and to look at the OOC thread where you will find some more information, including the existing PCs' character sheets.

    If I select your character, I will work with you to come up with a good introduction into the existing narrative, depending on your character's backstory and interests.

    The submission deadline is Friday, November 15, midnight EST (UTC -5). I'll review all submissions posted here until that time, even if you didn't signal interest earlier.

    Of course, any and all questions are welcome. Please allow for some delay in my responses during the November 3-8 week, as I will be traveling during that period of time.

    1. What game system are you running?
    Pathfinder 1st edition.

    2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?
    Standard Pathfinder set in Golarion.

    3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?
    1 or possibly 2 additional characters to add to the existing group of 3 PCs.

    4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?
    This forum, with IC and OOC threads. We also use a Discord channel for quick exchanges and general chatter.

    5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?
    Level 7.

    6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
    Regular wealth for level 7, ie. 23500 gp. No single magical item should have a value of more than half this total.

    7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
    Anything from Paizo is allowed, with the caveats below:
    - Firearms don't exist in Osirion.
    - I have not read Occult Adventures and I'm not knowledgeable about the classes and mechanics in it. However, if your character's story and personality are compelling, then I'll be happy to do the necessary homework.
    - I always reserve the right to nix something if it looks unbalanced or somehow inappropriate (I haven't ever nixed anything as far as Paizo material is concerned, so this is mostly a precaution clause).

    Third-party or homebrewed content is not allowed.

    8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
    Anything from Paizo is allowed. However, non-Core races are exceedingly rare. This means, if you want to play one, you'll have to come up with an extra strong story to explain why the character became an adventurer, how he/she relates to other races, etc. Special scrutiny will be given to races with RP>10. Also, please be prepared for the character to have trouble getting accepted by NPCs. That said, I won't stand in the way of an innovative, exciting character idea.

    9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
    25 point buy. Max hit points at first level. Afterwards, roll a half-die + half max (example: instead of 1d10, roll 1d5+5).
    About age modifiers: Feel free to write your character as any age that makes the most sense to you. However, please do not apply any age modifiers at character creation time. They may come up if your character reaches an age threshold during the campaign (very unlikely, in the case of Mummy's Mask).

    10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
    Yes, characters are expected to be following their alignment in RP. No alignment restrictions, but characters must be able to work with the party as a team. Evil or criminal acts towards NPCs will be met with proportionate reaction from NPC authorities and/or allies of the victims.

    11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
    Normal Pathfinder rules. No VMC.

    12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honor system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
    Most rolls should be made in the IC thread, together with your post concerning the action. When a description of your action depends on the roll result, it is recommended that you edit your post after the roll, rather than writing another post. If you mess up a roll (that happens to everybody), just post the make up roll in the OOC thread. Characters will roll their own rolls, except when necessary in the interest of speed: For example, I will roll for Perception, saving throws and Initiative most of the time.

    13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.

    Your character gets two traits, and can optionally get a third trait together with a drawback. If that's not enough traits, you can have more with the Additional Traits feat. Your traits and drawback (if any) need to be somehow linked to your background, and they should be roleplayed accordingly.

    Spoiler: Initiative and action order

    The point of this rule is to speed things up in the PbP context. It works like this:
    - Each character has individual initiative, while enemies have initiative as a group (equal to the average of all members).
    - If one party only is aware of their opponents, then that party gets a surprise round.
    - Round 0: The characters with initiative higher than the enemy initiative act; then, the enemies act.
    - Round 1: All characters act; then, the enemies act. Etc.
    - Character actions are resolved in the order of posting. When necessary, you can indicate conditional actions to modify that order: For example, "Berndik waits until Alzobar casts his spell, then he charges the ogre leader; if the leader is down, he charges the closest ogre instead".


    14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
    Yes. You don't need to write a very long story (but if you wish to do so, it's fine, especially if you can make it an entertaining read). Originality and flavor are strongly encouraged. I'd like you to cover:
    - Who the character is, where he/she comes from (race/ethnicity, place of origin, family, upbringing, training) and why he/she chose to do what he/she does.
    - At least a couple of NPCs that are important to your character's story (parents, siblings, mentors, past or present love interests, children, friends, enemies, etc).
    - At least few specific links to places, events, and/or people in Osirion, particularly the region around the cities of Sothis, Tephu, and/or Wati.

    In addition, I request that you write a personality description - again, not necessarily a long psychological profile, but at least something to help understand how the character interacts with other people. And a short physical description is in order.

    15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
    The game is a Pathfinder Adventure Path, so I expect it to include healthy doses of RP, exploration, and combat, and very few if any puzzles. Due to the specific constraints of RP, it is likely that I accelerate the scenario a little bit, for example by merging some encounters, or skipping them altogether. In particular, I will strive to make exploration faster by reducing the need for characters to listen and check for traps at every single door in a dungeon; so, you may sometimes see a post that describes the group exploring a whole lot of rooms in one go.

    16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
    Anything by Paizo on the pfsrd is allowed.

    17? Any other things that would be nice to know?
    Players are expected to post about once per day, and I will endeavour to do the same. Whenever you are offline for more than 2 days, please post an advance notice. If waiting for a post from a player makes the game stop for more than 48 hours, I may bot the character without warning.

    The reality is that our rate of posting has slowed down to quite a bit less than this ideal recently. With the addition of one or more new players, my goal is to get back to approximately 1 post per day, which I believe is a healthy pace in PbP.

    I request that every character have a sheet up on Mythweavers, detailing feats, class features, equipment, racial abilities etc. Please don't forget to indicate your favored class bonus choice. Please use the boxes at the bottom of the sheet to record your backstory, personality, description etc.

    For IC posts, I appreciate a modicum of effort to use correct grammar and spelling (but I know we all make typos...). Also, I recommend a degree of consistency in style, namely, everybody writes narration in the present tense. I find it makes reading more natural and pleasant.

    Please use the regular text style methods for PbP:
    - Every character has a unique text color.
    - Character speech is written between quote signs, in the character's color.
    - Character thoughts are written without quote signs, in the character's color, in italics.
    - Description of actions is in black, regular font.
    - Technical descriptions and die rolls go in a spoiler.

    This actually looks amazing! I would love to try to weave a character into the mix, however, I am relatively new to the system, so I may restrict myself to pretty much Core only, as that just seems easier. Jumping into 7th level can be daunting so I will likely further restrict my submission to a melee type character, depending on your three remaining players needs for a balanced party.

    Speaking of which, the OOC thread links 5 players, you mention you've dropped to three, who are the remaining players so I can try to fill a gap for the group.

    Hey, Zero! I'm one of the players reporting in. Good news: there's a lot of good stuff in the core rulebook for players of all experience levels. Bad news: of the three remaining, we have a paladin (who herself has a young cleric follower), rogue (me), and arcanist.

    Obviously, melee combat isn't really a shortcoming of the group at current. We tried to maintain some semblance of balance within the three of us, so there's no doubt going to be some overlap in terms of roles, but generic melee damager is probably about as much overlap as you could reasonably make happen. XD

    If I may make a few suggestions, some variety of ranged damage (magical or physical would be suitable) and/or divine support would be ideal. Having a true cleric that overshadows a follower cleric would be no big deal, anda fighter/ranger/bard/sorcerer that focuses on ranged damage (with a variety of other support options?) would fit well, also.

    Obviously, if those don't appeal, we can be flexible, but it might be worth trying to avoid bringing in (another) heavy melee specialist.

    Edit: The OP for OOC is a little out of date. Bound to happen in a 5-year-old game, I figure. The characters remaining are Vershab, Lehasti (and her follower Azkin), and Turi. Grekka is deceased.

    Funny thing, I applied to a game of Ironfang Invasion running on these boards, and the GM ghosted on the players. Due to the icnredible RP amount the four players, I explained my inexperience with the system, and stepped in to GM, recruited a few more players, and wrote off my own submission so a GM NPC bias wouldn't be present going forward in that game.

    I could take the time and level up my own ranger; Isafel vitas Aesernas and come up with a reason for him to have left Phaendar after the invasion. So I am not adverse to playing a ranger, though if I remember correctly I was reading posts on switch hitting, being primarily ranged but with the ideal of being able to mix it up in melee.

    Anyways, if that idea appeals to both existing players and Gwynfrid I'd love the opportunity to jump back into playing my ranger in a far off land!

    I could do an outer rifts oracle with the seeker archetype: That will give a trap-fixer and a healer at the same time, while still letting me pick another campaign trait.

    Hmm, interesting. Looks like a very neat setting.

    I'll roll up a druid. Haven't played one in Pathfinder and I'm curious how they work. It'll bring some healing to the party, some ranged spells, and some utility via the wild shape.

    Looking at the group as assembled so far, I feel like I'd like to apply with a fire-oriented cleric of Sarenrae? Would probably be a CG ethnically Qadiran expatriate, to give a slightly different gloss on the faith than the paladin would... seems like the best mix of diversity + having a reason to be immediately on-board with the party that I can immediately think of. Will see if I can get a backstory together on a reasonable timeframe.

    Upon review, druid seems a bit more melee than they used to be.

    Going to roll up a Hunter instead. Ranged firepower plus some spells for heals/buffs.

    Vershab here - I want to reitterate what FarmerBink/Turi said above - ranged, full-time divine support (not necessarily healing, though of course that wouldn't hurt), and magical-trap-finding are all areas that we currently lack mechanically. Our previous players were an Alchemist (ranged damage, supplemental support, and trapfinding) and an Inquisitor.

    Regarding role-playing, it is worth noting several idiocentricities:

    1. Turi, the Rogue PC, is the brother of Azkin, cohort of Lehasti (PC-Paladin). As such, Azkin will be sticking around permanently as lower-level divine support.
    2. My PC, Vershab, is deliberately off. I intend him to be impersonal, arguably behaving as if he were somewhere on the autism spectrum, and clueless. He only really opens up when interacting with the undead, which is deliberately meant to be a bit uncomfortable to the other PCs. His long-standing relationship with Lehasti and developing partnership with Turi and Azkin are founded on their inexhaustible patience with him. Lehasti is utterly dedicated to helping Vershab get better. It is probably a lost cause. (Think a more-uncomfortable Sheldon and Leonard and then add potentially world-ending power levels to the off-kilter character...)
    4. Vershab also currently has the Sky Pharoah's Mask. Given his odd relationship with undead and un-moral mindset, this should make lots of people uncomfortable.
    5. All of the current PCs are played by real-life brothers, so we are committed to making this work. Unfortunately we occaisionally have difficulty posting as frequently/quickly as would be ideal. I am currently the best at this, but am also active duty US Navy, so the next time I am deployable my posting could become inconsistent (again).

    We enjoy the RP that comes from all of this and hope you will too!

    Need to finish up backstory, spells and equipment, but here's the start of:

    Amasis Jabari, Dwarven Hunter, and Husani, his lion companion

    Gave him Trap Finding as a campaign trait as well, so he'll be able to help out with the trap problems you're having. Seems appropriate for a Hunter anyway, particularly in this region.

    That's an interesting idea and could develop into a very unusual character. Still, before you run with it, please make sure you have read item #8 of the 16.

    What exactly are you looking for when you mention ties to places or events in the Wati(/Sothis/Tephu) area? People are easy enough to understand, everyone has friends and colleagues, but...

    Or do you just mean to specify what our characters were doing before the events of Mummy's Mask?

    Places you were born in, have visited, have heard of and/or have an interest in for whatever reason. I'm mostly looking for hooks to tie the characters into the existing story.

    Wow, lots of attention very quickly, neat!

    I'm not sure it was said explicitly earlier, but I just want to mention/reiterate if it was: we're all in this to have fun. Please, find a way to incorporate your character into the party beyond numbers and mechanics. I know it's easy to get bogged down in the numbers, and it really is a balancing act, but we're looking for someone who can present their character in a compelling and believable way, and doesn't strain belief (beyond the obviously fantastic abilities, anyway) too much.

    Hrm... I have a old character for a Mummy's Mask game that I don't think I ever fully finished the backstory off. Basically uses a mummy's curse to explain away tielfling stats though from my notes I see I was willing to switch to human with some tielfing like traits as well. However I'd need to find a replacement class for a Fiendish Maurader Warden since that's third party. There might have been something amongst the occult classes to give a similar feel or perhaps there's another class/archetype amongst the normal stuff.

    Alternatively I could perhaps look at a ranged warpriest.

    Will need to reread the setting stuff either way.

    Just to confirm, yeah, I'm looking at a Shaman. The divine slant I'm seeing in the aps has me wondering about changing tac to stand out a little more... but eh, I think I'm going in at least a bit of a different direction. Shamans are already blasty for divine casters and the Human Favoured Class bonus gets them some Cleric spells back so I'm looking at a kinda mystic theurge with a bow, flavoured a bit by whatever spirit I end up deciding on.

    Question Gwyn. The Speaker for the Past archetype gets access to Revelations. Does this qualify me for the Extra Revelation feat? I'm legit conflicted, RAW and RAI, so will take a ruling either way on this one. ('You gain Revelations at this, this, and this level' isn't quite saying 'you have Revelations', since the feature is called something else. And it allows me to pick from two mysteries, so ExtraRev would broaden options kinda significantly.)

    RAW says "Revelations of the Past" not "Revelations". It's close, but not the same. But, the way I understand RAI, I think this should be allowed. Yes, it's a lot of options, but then the archetype sacrifices even more flexibility since its drops the wandering spirit feature.

    No one is looking at the tomb raider/trap breaker angle really, so I want to provide an archaelogist bard. Could I use Master Performer to say that my character has studied in a very renown adventurer, maybe even working for the Pathfinder Lodge itself? the musical fluff of the Kitharodian Academy does not fit a scholar interested in ancient ruins (and treasure but if Remington was asked, he was of course after the scholastic experience...and maybe a bit of fame).

    Please elaborate on your question? I'm not sure what feat exactly you're referring to. Also, the link you provided doesn't work.

    There's a feat called master performer, very nice effect for bards. It uses the faction and prestige rules and requires you to have gained 15 prestige awards (little points that track how much the faction likes you) with the Kitharodian Academy, I think he wants to pick somewhere else to be associated with instead.

    Oh and I've changed my mind about being a cleric because trying to trapmonkey on one just doesn't work.
