    Self-scrubbing for reasons.

It depends on the system you're already using.
How do players use magic? What are the rules for it and what does it look like/feel like when they cast a spell? For example, wizards in D&D 3.5e must choose each spell they want to cast in the day, but they can learn as many spells as they can find.

How are the Elves different? Well, you could decide you want them to have a more rigid style of magic and look up the Force rules from the Star Wars d20 game. Instead of spending spell slots, they'd need to use some life energy and roll to see how well they control it.
Or you could say Elves are more limited to a few strong abilities that they can use whenever they want. Maybe Elven magic lets you cast Scorching Ray at will, but nothing else.

My main suggestion? If the Elves play by different rules, have them literally play by different rules. It'll shake things up for your players, and there are plenty of magic systems out there to choose from, varying in complexity of course. Make sure there are drawbacks and benefits to Elf magic and "regular" magic.
