Default Rise of the Runelords IC

The Swallowtail Festival has officially arrived upon the town of Sandpoint, and in the time you’ve spent here you’ve come to realize the importance this moment has on the citizens of this quaint town. It brings closure to a series of events from five years ago, referred to as “the Late Unpleasantness”, when a seemingly harmless eccentric named Jarvis Stoot snapped, embarking on a killing spree that would have been shocking and unsettling in Magnimar, and was catastrophic in sleepy Sandpoint. Nearly two dozen people were stalked and killed before ‘Chopper’ died resisting arrest. His body had barely cooled before the townspeople had to deal with another tragedy: an accidental fire that destroyed the northernmost quarter of town - starting with the cathedral, where beloved priest Ezakien Tobyn, his daughter, and several acolytes perished.
For five years, the faithful of Sandpoint have attended church in smaller wooden structures hastily rebuilt after the fire, and while their new pastor, Father Zantus, was helpful, kind, and wise, it just wasn’t the same. Now, the new stone cathedral is finally done. All that remains is for the Swallowtail Festival to renew the site’s blessings from the gods.

It is now the first day of fall, and the entire population is gathered in front of the main doors on the western side of the building. Flanking those doors, tall stained glass windows honor Shelyn and Gozreh, whose worshippers share the western chapel. Several merchant tents feature food, clothes, local crafts, and souvenirs. Some of the detritus of construction still lies scattered about, but most of the old scaffolding and waste wood have been repurposed in the construction of the high dais in the southeastern corner of the open square in front of the church. Welcome speeches should begin soon, and in four chairs on the dais can be seen a slender middle-aged woman with short auburn hair, a burly, bald Shoanti man in the uniform of the town Guard, a flamboyant man whose bright clothing is at the height of Magnimar fashion, and, of course, a pleasant-looking cleric whose fine linen robes are elaborately and tastefully embroidered in a repeating pattern of blue butterflies. The first of these individuals stands at half-past eleven, and the crowd quiets.

"It is so delightful to see so many faces here today, both new and familiar," she begins. "To those of you from out of town, I am Kendra Deverin, mayor of Sandpoint, and you are most welcome!" She pauses as the crowd shouts its agreement.

"To those who already know me, I'm glad you could all spare a day to celebrate. I'm sure only Rovansky, our tanner, is too busy to - oh look! Friends, here in the first row, Larz is here!" Loud laughter ripples through the crowd, especially among those who sit close enough to the tanner to see his unamused expression.

"Anyway, I can smell the lunch our tavern keepers are cooking already. A round of applause to Ameiko, Garridan, Cracktooth, and Jargie! I'm sure Father Zantus can spare an extra prayer that they don't burn anything before we get to eat it." More cheering erupts: the aromas drifting over the crowd are glorious.

"Now, since you have three more of us to stand there through, I'm going to sit down. No business today! This is my favorite time of year!"

The next two speeches go just as quickly as the mayor’s. Sherrif Hemlock is as usual far too serious, reminding everyone to be safe around this evening’s bonfire and requesting a moment of silence to remember those who perished in the fire that destroyed the old church.

Cyrdak Drokkus brings the mood back up with a hilarious recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new building. He throws a bit of self-promotion at the end, inviting the townsfolk and visitors to attend his new production of “The Harpy’s Curse” tomorrow night. The lead role of Avisera the harpy queen will be played by none other than the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda, a definate coup for a theater so far from the city.

Finally, Father Zantus takes the stage to officially open the ceremony. “Today ushers in a new season, many would call this season Autumn. The season which makes summer give way to winter, bring cool air and brightly colored trees to the canvas of the world. But others would refer to this season as Fall...and there is good reason for that. For today also marks the day that Desna fell from the heavens after doing battle with Lamashtu.

Lamashtu gloated as she began to ransack Desna’s palace, laughing all the way as her body fell into the sea below. Though all the world wept for the loss of the goddess, and of dreams, it is said that she survived, wounded, washed up on the rocks of the sea. She was discovered there, on the rocks, by a blind orphan, forgotten and cast aside by all the world. Though the orphan knew not of who she had discovered and could do little for the wounded goddess, she still stayed there by her side, holding a vigil on the beach, praying and tending to her as best she could. And though she tired and knew that the goddess had little chance to recover, she remained all throughout the night and into the week, praying and keeping faith.

And eventually, Desna did recover, though all the world thought her lost; and to thank the child who had prayed for her health, she transformed her into an immortal butterfly to forever remain with her in her palace in the heavens”

Father Zantus motions toward the newly finished cathedral, the sunlight glittering off the stained glass windows. “This story reminds us that tragedy is just a setback, not an end. Though our place of worship was destroyed, and our previous priest, Father Tobyn, perished in the flame, we have persevered as Desna would desire, and built anew. In celebration of our new grand cathedral, let the Swallowtail Festival begin.”

With that, several of the priest’s acolytes throw off the canvas of a nearby wagon, revealing a thousand swallowtail butterflies...the Children of Desna. The butterflies flutter in every direction, eager children chasing them in a futile attempt to catch one.

The crowd disperses, and as people get food from the various tables set up around the area, several carnival games are set up around the area.

Immersed in the gathered crowd, Kerina splits her attention between the speeches being bespoken atop the dais and letting her gaze roam over those who have gathered for the celebration. While she's most certainly not the tallest person gathered in this crowd, she's still above average and has little trouble picking out a few select individuals whom she feels might be worth spending her time on.

Her blood sings, and she finds herself humming absently to herself as the speechifying continues – despite the fact that unlike many of her people, she has no real talent or interest in having musical skills of any sort.

That could be, she would concede, because she's not actually one of her people, as it were.

Regardless, she's in an excellent mood, and anticipation thills gently through her. She's off on her own, and while that's somewhat of an unsettling thing it's also dreadfully full of potential. She can do whatever she may want to, and she has no obligations to anyone else to get in the way!

This festival should prove to be a great deal of fun.

Listening to the words detailing the fall of Desna, Kerina is well familiar with the tale; Densa is well-loved amongst her Varisian kin, and she herself has respect for the Tender of Dreams. It is the tenets of Calistra, however, that resonate most strongly with her.

The release of the butterflies is, indeed, quite impressive, and her face lights up as she regards the swarm swirl chaotically into the sky...but ensures her hand remain on her money purse as she does so. She is far too intimately familiar with the value of a good distraction for a skilled pickpocket, and she has no desire to have her coins lifted from her like some clueless gadjo.

The refreshment tables now open for patronage, the dark-haried woman sways her way through the assembled crowd to claim a drink for herself, selecting a cheap clay goblet of pale wine. Taking a sip, her nose wrinkles briefly at the lukewarm liquid; the table had been directly in the autumnal sun, and even these rays of lesser strength had been enough to render the drinks to an unexciting temperature.

No matter. Weaving threads of her active prestidigitation into the wine, she pulls the excess heat from the fermented drink and lets it disperse into the autumnal air. Taking a second sip, she smiles as the chilled wine slides down her throat; much better.

Moving away from the table to make room for others, she continues to sip at her wine as she contemplates what she should do first; food, then company, or company with which to get food. Decisions, decisions....

Originally Roga had been sitting in the very front row, he had some time before his performance with the Ruby Revelry Company and knowing how important this festival was to him, Loric had let the giant man wander the town. It quickly became apparent that with Roga's great size he would have to stand in the back so as not to obstruct anyone's view. He laughed it off and scuffled off to the back. He listened with as much attention as he could give to the speeches before his mind began to wander to thoughts of his sister.

How could they not, back home, the Elk Rider Day was one of Riska's favorites. Of course it was different than these southerner's celebration, but the spirit was just the same. Roga could feel the excitement and hope emanate off of everyone, he found it hard not to yell in glee at each collective breath the crowd took, his mighty chest swelling with joy. As the speeches turned to the trials of Desna, Roga began to work a quiet prayer to himself, praying to Desna to keep Riska safe and to let her know that he would be fine.

At the end of the speech when the butterflies were released, he could not contain himself anymore. He roared with joy, a resounding sound, and he joined the children in chasing after the butterflies, letting out large guffaws of laughter as his heart was feeling lighter than it ever had before. As the butterflies finally began to disperse, Roga sought out a carnival game to play.

Breyt witnessed the speeches from the back of his hound, standing at the fringes of the crowd. The halfling was long used to being bustled aside among taller company, and didn't so much mind it anymore, especially since he could hear perfectly well from where he was what was being said. The speeches were all good, and grand, though the last bit about overcoming trials and persevering hits a little close to home for him. He idly toys with the silver chain around his neck, becoming lost in thought as the butterflies are unleashed above the crowd. Being at the side and shorter than most folk, he doesn't notice them at first, and in fact might not have noticed them at all if Antigone hadn't gone roaring after the insects, making Breyt have to grip tight to her scruff in order to avoid being thrown off as she darted into the crowd with him.

It really was quite a sight, seeing this man no longer than a child being bucked through it on the back of a strange-looking wolf, shouting in both Common and Halfling. "Gone-y, no! Calm down! Ah! Rydych chi'n mynd i fy nhaflu!" He says, brown eyes wide and dark hair ruffled back by the speed at which his mount is pursuing her 'prey'. Children flock around them, delighted by the strange looking and playful dog, and only laugh when the Maned Wolf jumps into the air to catch a Swallowtail so high that she flubs her landing, falling right onto her rump and finally shaking her rider free.

Breyt grunts as he sits up and pats himself down, and almost immediately his dog comes running over to check of he's okay. Amidst her whining and face licking, Breyt chuckles to himself. "Antigone, merch wirion, merch dda," he hums, before glancing up and finding himself sitting at the feet of a very large human. Breyt does recall that hitting the ground wasn't quite as hard as it should have been, and swiftly realizes he was thrown into the man's legs. "Ah! Apologies! She got a little ruffled, there... don't think she's seen so many pilipalas before," he says, tapping his hound twice on the nose as he stands and looks up at the stranger. He swiftly offers the giant of a man a smile, and puts out his hand. "Breyt Culler, at ya service."

For his part Nakan lingers on the edge of the crowd as the different speeches occur. For all the shared history between the Shoanti and Varisians the tall man has had little personal contact with those not of his own tribe given the rather rocky area they inhabit and the nearby Riddleport which is avoided out of preference. Thus his small band's warm arrival earlier in the day had caught Nakan by surprise and even now he watches with barely veiled interest. His people's gods were not the same as those revered here and yet the story they told wasn't unknown to Nakan. It was one of endurance, survival, and renewal. While he didn't know the full details of "the Late Unpleasantness" his companion Tahoma had given him the brief details. Such an event would have been equally devastating to one of the tribes and yet here the people had turned it into a new beginning... Perhaps they weren't so soft as Nakan had thought.

Yet even as he considered that thought there went a man even larger than him joining in chasing the butterflies and a halfling seeming to lose control of his animal. All to safe endings yet still puzzling to the Shoanti man. Such a strange mix of people...

"Ha! Roga let's out a mighty laugh as he looks down at the tiny man in front of him "Is not problem, my little friend! Roga is glad to give soft land." Roga bends down to shake the offered hand "Is good to meet you Breyt, am called Roga the Incredible Man." Roga has a hard time not shouting his circus name but continues on unperturbed by any onlookers. "What is name of pup you have?" he says reaching out to pet Breyt's companion.

From the back of the crowd, a woman watches, silent and with her arms crossed over her chest. Despite whatever it was about her that attracted people to her, Jaxa had never been good with crowds, least of all crowds filled with people she didn’t knows.

Around halfway through Father Zantus’s speech, Jaxa started to get bored. She was new to this town and didn’t particularly care about the story of Desna, and so she looked around for something to break the boredom. She saw what appeared to be a halfling losing control of their animal, at which she let out a small chuckle.

She let out a little gasp when the butterflies were released. She didn’t often find the natural world beautiful, but the colors of the butterflies were unlike anything she had seen before.

Antigone sniffs at Roga's hand before allowing him to pet her, and her tail wags slowly. She seems uncertain until she glances over and sees that Breyt is smiling at the strange human, and then she licks Roga's hand once. "She's Antigone," Breyt says, smiling as he reaches up to pat the Maned Wolf's flank. "A good girl, usually," he adds with a little laugh. "Had her since I was small. Well, smaller than I am, now," he chuckles.

Considerations of consumables or companionship are shunted to the side as Kerina espies something far more important – puppy! Her eyes light up at the sight of enthusiastic canid frolicking, and she immediately begins navigating through the crowd in that direction.

It only takes her a few moments of looking at dog to notice that the dog isn’t merely a pet of some sort, but somebody’s mount; that somebody, in fact, is currently in the saddle.

Hey, don’t judge; for her, that’s actually noticing relatively quickly, especially when a distraction like a dog is onhand.

Mind you, the rider isn’t on for very much longer, the little man going flying as his mount becomes perhaps a tad too energetic to handle. Kerina snorts softly in amusement, and continues to make her way through the crowd until she gets within (yay!) petting distance.

”Beautiful dog,” she says warmly, smiling down at the wee man. ”I’m not familiar with the breed,” she admits, her own experience largely with the massive mastiffs used as caravan guards or the smaller terriers used as mousers or pets.

Speaking of; the black-and-brown tattoo of a dog on the inside of her right forearm suddenly squirms, and leaps from her skin to land as a fully formed terrier of perhaps seventeen pounds. Bright eyes flash and a pink tongue lolls briefly before sharp barking yips into the air.

Kerina smiles wryly and shrugs. ”Kaylee would like to play,” she explains ruefully. ”May I pet your gorgeous baby?” the tall woman asks hopefuly.

Breyt isn't surprised at all by the attention that Antigone is getting him, he's used to it by now. She was a strange and rare breed, and her bright red fur made her an oddity, as did her rounded ears and long limbs. He is still looking up at Roga when another dog suddenly appears out of a woman's arm, and Antigone is wagging her tail faster as she leans down to greet the little thing. "You can pet her, aye, she's very sweet. She's called Antigone, she's a Maned Wolf," he explains to the strange-looking woman with her magically appearing dog. He leans over just a bit to get a better look at Kaylee. "Ah, and what breed is this anwylyd?" he asks.

Upon being informed that this strange, oversized-fox appearing canid is, in fact, a breed of wolf, Kerina is even more impressed by the little man’s moxie at using it as a mount...and isn’t dissuaded from crouching down and offering the back of her hand for the wolf to scent in her own time.

”A genuine wolf? I’m impressed,” she admits. ”You’re a pretty girl, aren’t you Antigone? Aren’t you?” Her face is alight with delight at such an unusual puppy to play with.

”Kaylee is an Artume Jack; they breed them up in the River Kingdoms,” she goes on as the little dog continues to dance around fearlessly and yap at the much larger wolf. ”They’re ridiculously intelligent and even more stubborn, but wonderful companions.”

She smiles slyly, looking aside at the Halfling. ”Of course, most of them aren’t quite this special,” she adds, rolling her forearm slightly. ”Makes her dreadfully easy to take care of at times, though,” she concludes; and that’s one of the driving forces in her life after all; what’s easy, or convenient.

What’s the point in having power beyond the norm if one doesn’t use it to make life easier, more comfortableb – and more fun, of course?

"Ha! Roga boasts out another impressive laugh, at the magical appearance of the second dog "Is good trick, dog would not being so happy on Roga, Roga sweat much!" Roga laughs at his own joke, he tries to clap the canine owners on the back, an act that he is used to, but not so much able to control his own strength for, but the giant man struggles with the height difference of Breyt. Quickly giving up, he looks around over the top of the other people in the street, continuing his search for the carnival games he had heard about.

Come! My new friends, we play games now da?" Not waiting for an answer, he leads the way towards the first game that he can lay his eyes on. "Follow Roga the Incredible Man!" As he leads the way, he begins a joyful noise of a song in his native Kellid tongue. He smiles at each person they pass, waving at vendors and occasionally having to step over children running underfoot. If it wasn't for his jovial nature he could have been quite intimidating with his great stature, boar tusked shaped scars on each cheek, unique hair style, and the large axe that rested on his back, that could be intimidating all on its own. Despite all of this, Roga carried himself with such good will and insurmountable cheer that he had completely disregarded his warrior like appearance. To him it was now a costume for the circus where he would do mock battles with all sorts of monstrous creatures.

The Carnival is in full swing now. Nearly every child has finished their food, and the streets are full of children running from one station to the next. To your right there's a game advertised as the "Goblin Toss", where children and adults alike compete to see who can throw the most bean bags into a bucket. The bucket seems to have a few red pieces of paper sticking out to make it look vaguely like a fire.

To your left, the "Ogre Smash" is a game where people hit a platform with a wooden mallet to launch a wooden weight up a board. You receive a ribbon if you hit the bell at the top.

Behind you, where the speeches were before, is the performance area. It seems like there's a magician performing there right now.

The last carnival game on this street is "Giant Invasion". It seems to be a game where you roll a ball to try to knock over a large amount of wooden cylinders, but it's hard to tell from this distance.

The weight flies up to the top of the pole and hits the bell, which rings for a while before stopping. A few people standing nearby stare in amazement at the halfling. After a moment, the woman running the station comes up and hands Breyt a small green ribbon. "Wow, congratulations! I don't think I've ever seen someone of your size do that before."

Roga pumps both arms into the air and roars in triumph at Breyt's success. "Whoo! My small friend hits thing well! See Breyt Bell Ringer." Roga calls to the crowd, hyping them up for the success of his new friend. "He has much strength in arms! My feet are now being scared of you. Roga laughs at his own joke.

"Ha! Is good fun, now, friend Breyt, let Roga The Incredible Man try. It would not be game without rival, da?" Roga takes the hammer, noticing the weight behind it "Am, more impressed friend Breytis string weapon. Roga will give it Roga's best to try to beat you!" with a loud "grah!" Roga slams down with the hammer as best he could.

The weight flies into the air and falls back down within a few seconds. The woman mutters, "Huh. Thought he'd be stronger." before handing Roga a red ribbon with Participation written on it. A few passers-by who saw Roga hit it look at him strangely.

Breyt chuckles a little to himself at Roga's attempt, nudging him in the knee. "Ah, romping with the children and pilipalas must have worn you out!" he says. "We should get something to eat! Replenish your great strength, friend!" he insists. He looks around - there are a lot of smells and sights around, and he wonders where to begin.

He turns to the woman that had joined them, and smiles. "See anything around that might be suitable for both man and beast?" he asks her, patting Antigone's side as her tail wags. He suddenly realizes - "Ah, miss! I never got your name!" He gives her a little bow and grin. "Breyt Culler at your service. Suppose we both thought it was more important to introduce our dogs, first!"

Kerina grins at the little man’s appreciation of her talents, eyes twinkling.

”Oh, I have a few tricks about me,” she replies modestly, tiny motes of coloured light swirling between the fingers of one hand for a moment before winking out again. Extremely elementary magicks, but even such can be a treat for those who aren’t used to such.

She allows herself to be dragged along in the big man’s enthusiastic wake, not particularly put off by his size or demeanour. She’s spent her share of time with men large of muscle and small of brain; depending on what one is looking for, they can be quite useful. Kaylee prances along with her tail raised and flicking from side to side; the dark-coated terrier clearly considers the group moving with her nothing more than the attendants she is due.

The very lopsided results with the bell surprises and delights her, and she finds herself warming to the little man even further. Well spoken, complementary, far stronger than one would expect – and, well, dog goes without saying.

”That is quite the fetching green ribbon you’ve won with your strength of arm,” she compliments him with a warm smile. ”I’ll wager you’ve won a wager or two from those who underestimate you, mmm?” she asks gleefully.

Breyt introduces himself, and she conceals a slight smile at having maneuvered him into making that first move.

”Well, of course, dogs are more important than mere people],” she agrees with obvious whimsy. ”I would be Kerina, but you can call me whenever you feel like it, Breyt.” Her cheek dimples as she gives him an unabashedly direct look.

”But where to eat?” she continues, looking up and around. ”I always like to consult an expert. Kaylee; find us some food,” she instructs her pet, sending a feeling of hunger through their bond.

Almost trembling with excitement, the terrier barks twice, sharply, nose twitching a she sniffs the air, then bolts off like a black streak through the crowds, dodging legs and feet with reckless abandon.

”She says that way,” the raven-haired woman says, perhaps unnecessarily, and starts following at a more sedate pace.

Seeing a group of people crowd around the Giant Smash game, Jaxa decided to join them. After all, she was at a carnival; she could loosen up a bit. The group looked like the out-of-town type, what with their two dogs and mismatched accents. She heard the bell ring, and was surprised when she realized that the one who had rung it wasn’t the big man, but the little halfling. After the group had finished, she went up and gave it a whack.

After seeing her results, she introduces herself to the group. “I’m Jaxa, a sailor and explorer. I heard you were talking about getting food; would you mind if I tagged along? I hear the food here is quite good.”

Despite her appearance, Jaxa manages to hit the bell easily. The woman mutters, "These foreigners keep surprisin' me," just barely loud enough for you to hear before handing Jaxa her green ribbon.

As you walk through the crowd in the church square, many of the passers-by stare at the strange sight of the giant man and the halfling riding beside him. You find Kaylee panting next to a large stand with a variety of different foods. Fish, fruit, various types of soup, and a large bowl of pudding all cover this table. A woman wearing an apron with an athletic build and ladle in her hand stands at the far end of the table, scooping a meal into a bowl for another customer.

Breyt smiles warmly as Kerina introduces herself, and has the grace to blush when he hears her 'proposition.' He cannot deny that she is very beautiful, and seems quite friendly and fun to be around. But his heart was already spoken for. Now does not seem like the appropriate time to bring that up, however. He does not want to lead her on, but neither does he want to make things awkward, so he merely gives a little nod - and glances up as another woman joins them. "Miss, of course it's no trouble to join us. What else are festivals for, besides fun and fraternizing?" he asks, motioning for Jaxa to fall in with them as he hops up on Antigone's back and follows Kerina and her dog towards the buffet that soon appears.
"My, my, your hound has a good nose!" he praises Kaylee. He glances around for a signboard with prices of the food. He's not quite short of coin today, but he knows he shouldn't spend it all at the festival. After all, he'll have to keep making ends meet after today.

Breyt hums at the prices. A gold piece for two fish specials seems a little steep, unless the food is good. He sits up a little higher on Antigone's back. "What kind of fish have you got, my fair maiden?" he calls towards the vendor with a charming smile. Being from inland, he hadn't had much experience with fish before leaving home in search of Amara. But now that he's spent so much time in port towns, he's starting to get a little more used to it. More importantly, so is Antigone. Though she'd prefer red meat, he knew. Perhaps there was another stall nearby selling that? He'd have to glance around before committing to buying fish for his mount.

Jaxa looked over the prices, debating in her mind if the fish special was worth the extra cost. She reached into her coin purse and was slightly alarmed to find that her coins from the Laughing Reaper were nearly gone. She fished out a gold, making a mental note to find a job somewhere in the town if possible. Perhaps she could find work as a priest, she wondered, before turning to the woman behind the table. “I’ll have a fruit salad. Can you make change for a gold?” she asks, handing the woman her coin.

The woman quickly walks over to you and serves a fruit salad , "I've got mostly salmon, some guppies, and a few gobies if you want more experimental cooking. Oh, there's also sardines if you want a smaller meal. Perhaps for your dog?"

"Actually, I don't think I've seen you 'round here before. Would you happen to need a place to stay?"

She hands Jaxa the fruit salad along with 7 silvers and 5 coppers after taking her money.

A bell ringing catches Nakan's attention, even moreso who rang it. The scene plays out before him as the massive man tries and fails before a spindly fletching even beats him. "By the grizzly..." Honestly the whole business confused him. As half the group wanders off to get food the shoanti approaches the "Ogre Smash" and gives it a look over. A simple game by the looks of it, hit the platform, hit the bell, which begged the question of how the large man hadn't done it.

Still Nakan's curiosity is piqued and he takes up the hammer and gives ringing the bell a try.

Nakan barely manages to get the weight off the ground before it falls back down. The woman mutters, "Hmph. These foreigners are strange." before pulling out a red ribbon which, once again, reads Participation.
