Default Will Kill for Pay: PF1E Mercenary Game (E6, Spheres)

Submissions are closed! Expect party selection by tomorrow evening.

Hello folks! Had a request for a mercenary-style Pathfinder game, so here we go! Open to new interest, not just folks from the previous thread.

For anyone who might have played the game Battle Brothers, I'll be drawing from that fairly heavily for inspiration.

    System: Pathfinder 1E
Player Count: 4-6. Since Muja made the initial game request they have a guaranteed spot if they submit a character.
Style of Play: Mix of combat, intrigue, and social RP. I intend to flesh out NPCs with their own goals and motivations, how much you engage with those are up to you.
    Allowed Content:

    • 1st party Paizo
    • Magic will be Spheres of Power. Casters use a Spheres class or archetype. You may choose your casting tradition subject to GM approval.
    • Spheres of Might is available (but not required).
    • We will be using the E6 rules available here, tweaked for spheres. Signature feats (feats which allow characters to access some 7th and 8th level features) are available. If you're playing a non-core class, we will create an appropriate set of signature feats.

    Character Creation:

    • Backstory: Required, but doesn't have to be overly in-depth. You may choose two traits, or three with a flaw.
    • Experience: 3rd level (5000 XP). We will be using medium XP progression (although we may default to milestone/story XP, as that makes a bit more sense in this type of game IMO).
    • Wealth: Standard WBL (3000 gp).
    • Ability Scores: 4d6b3. You may roll two sets and choose which one you want to use. If neither suits you, you may opt to take 20 point buy.
    • Hitpoints/Health: Max first level, roll afterwards. Reroll 1s.
    • Races: Core races are available, as are the elemental races (Sylph, Oread, Undine, and Ifrit) and Tiefling. I have two new races listed in the Other Notes section (Suntouched and Moontouched) taking the place of Aasimars. All the outsider races use half-elf aging tables. Ratfolk are explicitly present though one would draw some unfortunate attention. Other races, ask.
    • Alignment: No restrictions or special rules. This game will probably take a gray-and-gray morality approach, with the party being able to pick between cultivating a reputation as fairly upstanding and honest, willing to take any job if the pay is right, outright banditry, or anything in between. NPCs will react according to your reputation (so if you antagonize someone too much, they may hire mercenaries to come after you). However, I would prefer we avoid psychopath evil murderhobo PCs.
    • Background skills are available
    • Firearms use the default rules/prices (emerging guns)

    Other Notes:

    Spoiler: Political Situation
    Show
The campaign will take place in the region of Ostmark, a frontier region of the Exalted Empire of Alemannia. While the dukes, counts, and various other lords in the region are nominally vassals of Kaiser Friederich V, the Imperial court is far away and previous Kaisers have traded away rights and authority to his subjects in exchange for temporary monetary or military aid. The lords of the realm, especially in distant border regions such as these, effectively act as independent petty kings when it suits them to ignore Imperial commands—which is most of the time. The dukes of the realm elect one of their own to the position and the Kaiser is expected to act as first among equals. In fact, the previous Kaiser was removed from the office (and, coincidentally, his head removed from his shoulders) for attempting to exert too much authority on his own.

To the east, semi-nomadic tribes of orcs and goblins raid Imperial settlements, though they are disjointed and fight amongst themselves. Usually the conflict is limited to raids and skirmishes on both sides, although on occasion large bands of orcs unite under a single war-leader and stage a massive invasion of Imperial territory. The last one managed to seize several Imperial towns and castles, which were either destroyed, taken over, or are still held as tributaries of various orc leaders. To the north, across an enclosed sea, the Skaven—bands of ratfolk raiders—occasionally sally forth in their ships to plunder coastal towns, sometimes venturing further upriver. To the south, the rival Kingdom of Nitra, which has been in an uneasy truce with the empire for the last few decades. However, ambitious nobles on both sides of the border often look for opportunities to snatch a bit of land out from under the nose of their counterparts on the other side, occasionally resulting in small-scale warfare. And to the west lies the remainder of the Empire, increasingly growing fat and happy, isolated from the threats on the borders.

    Spoiler: Races
    Show
The majority of Imperial subjects in Ostmark are human. Dwarves and Elves both make up a minority population, about 3-5% of the population each. Elves generally keep to their own communities, while Dwarves tend to mingle in human cities more often. Most Halflings live in their own regions within other areas of the Empire, so the permanent Halfling population of Ostmark is low, but it isn’t unusual to see a Halfling struck by wanderlust as a merchant, adventurer, mercenary, or traveler in the area. No one really knows where the gnomes come from but there are always a few cropping up nearly anywhere in the world. As the human populations live in relatively close proximity to both Orcs and Elves in Ostmark, half-orcs and half-elves are relatively common. Planetouched (sylphs, oreads, undines, ifrits, tieflings, suntouched and moontouched) pop up occasionally as they do in any human community. Other races are nearly unheard of in Ostmark, though strange things do spring up sometimes.

Note that all elemental-blood races use half-elf aging tables.

    Spoiler: Religion
    Show
The official religion of Ostmark—and indeed, the Empire at large—is the Church of Sun and Moon, dedicated to the sun god Ramua (LN) and the moon goddess Sinue (CN). Ramua’s priesthood is the most visible, with the presence of a church of Ramua being the distinguishing factor between a proper town and a mere village. There is a rigid, structured priesthood, and despite exhortations for priests to live simple lives with only enough possessions to provide what they need to live, in actuality they control large areas of land and amounts of wealth and political influence—especially in the Empire. At the top of the priesthood is His Radiant Holiness, Archon Gregory XII. The Archons and the Imperial Kaisers have been involved in a protracted struggle for power and influence within the empire nearly since the empire’s founding. The priesthood of Sinue, by contrast, is fairly decentralized, with small shrines being much more widespread and local priests exercising far more autonomy than most priests of Ramua. Sinue’s priests control far less land and wealth than Ramua’s, although they have their major churches—instead, the priests of Sinue deal in information and secrets. Rumor holds that the priests of Sinue could topple nearly any lord or king—or, perhaps, even emperor—should they choose to. The two deities are not considered at odds with one another, although their churches sometimes vie for influence, and it’s custom for lords to have at least one priest of each in advisory positions. Beside these two is Kiriel, lord of death and the dead. He has no dedicated priesthood and is not generally worshipped. Priests of either Ramua or Sinue may intercede on one’s behalf to Kiriel, usually on the person’s deathbed.

The Elves follow their own version of Ramua and Sinue, as the church was inspired by elven forms of worship in the first place. The Dwarves follow their own deity, Bellithor (NG), a god of the forge. Gnomes have a bewildering array of deities, including ones for incredibly specific concepts or places. The most common appears to be Linmi, goddess of the color blue, drinking during the waxing crescent moon, and one particularly large tree in a particular forest—though answers as to which forest conflict. Most non-gnomes have given up understanding gnomish religion.

In addition to the official religions, shadowy cults can be found hiding in dark corners of the empire. Various fey creatures (LE), aberrations and elder things (CE), and archfiends (any Evil) will grant devoted mortals power, though these powers often come at a heavy cost. Among the most insidious and widespread of these cults is that of Davkul, a god of death who demands bloody sacrifice in his name (as opposed to Kiriel, who takes only those whose time has come). Though his worship is officially forbidden, followers can be found across Ostmark, openly in a few cases. Every now and then one can find a scarred man spouting gibberish, though in the midst of the babble a few words can be made out—Davkul awaits…

It should be noted that no deity, even the likes of Kiriel or Davkul, grants the power to create undead. While it is possible to make a pact with one of the lesser elder beings to gain such powers, the majority of necromancers learn their trade through arcane rather than divine means.

Priests of Ramua (and to a lesser degree Sinue) will have a network of churches to call upon, and can generally get an “in” with most any town via their priesthood assuming the character is in good standing with the church. On the other hand, they will possibly have other instructions and responsibilities conflicting with their adventuring career—again, especially in the case of priests of Ramua.

    Spoiler: Important NPCs
    Show
Duke Gottfried of Andover: one of the most powerful rulers of the Mark, whose wife is a cousin of the Kaiser and who holds the Imperial title “Protector of the East.” While this title holds no real power unless granted by the Kaiser, the duke likes to lord his influence and wealth (largely gained through his connection to the Kaiser’s family) over the other lords of Ostmark, attempting to run the region as his own personal fief. How much the other lords listen depends on how much they think they can stand to gain. He rules from his palace in the city of Frausebruck, and the nearby castle of Burg Strenebach.

Margrave Johannes Erhardt of Padenbonn: a marcher lord on the frontiers of the Ostmark, whose grandfather was granted conquered land as a reward for service in war. The margravate is not the most wealthy or prosperous, but his military force is well-known to be one of the best in the region. He is involved in near-constant skirmishing on the border, and has a reputation for paying mercenary companies well for their service, provided they meet his exacting standards. He rules from his castle Neuturm.

Archbishop Heinrich: probably the second most powerful man in Ostmark, after the Duke of Andover. All priests in the Mark ultimately answer to him. He controls the massive cathedral at Reseburg, as well as the surrounding countryside and several villages and small fortresses.

Grand Mayor Albrecht of Dischenheim: the elected mayor of the Free City of Dischenheim, the only Imperial Free City in Ostmark. As a free city, it enjoys certain rights and privileges which other cities do not, and the Grand Mayor answers only to the Emperor. The Grand Mayors have managed to keep their independence despite the efforts of various local lords to exert their influence over the area. The Grand Mayor controls the city of Dischenheim, the largest city in the Ostmark, and significant tracts of land around the city proper. Several patrician families vie with one another for control of the city.

Duchess Katarin of Nordhau: the wife of Duke Georg of Nordhau and daughter of Duke Hildebrandt of Gottshold. Though officially her only influence is from her husband’s position, due to her father’s advanced age and her husband and younger brother’s love of wine and general disinterest in ruling matters, in reality she holds a large amount of influence in both realms, effectively ruling both in all but name. She is a shrewd politician and will go to great lengths to hold on to the power base she has carved out for herself. She runs the court of Nordhau from the fortress of Sturmfeste.

Hochmeister Konrad of the Knights Radiant: the master of the Knightly Order of the Northern Temple of Ramua Radiant, more commonly known as the Knights Radiant, a knightly order nominally subject to the Kaiser, though not officially his vassal. They control a stretch of land on the northeastern coast, and are often the first line of defense against Skaven or Orcish incursions. Officially they look down on the petty politicking and bickering between the lords of Ostmark, while simultaneously taking any opportunity to expand their own sphere of influence.

More may be added as time goes on.

    Spoiler: New Races

Skilled: +2 Bluff and Sense Motive
    Energy Resistance 5 (Cold)

Both Suntouched and Moontouched are largely human in appearance, though they'd rarely be mistaken for a normal human. Their skin tends towards a metallic tone--a gold-like yellow for Suntouched and silvery tones for Moontouched. Most also have unusual eye colors--yellow, pale green, or near-white for Suntouched, or silver-grey, pale blue, or purple for Moontouched. Some have other distinguishing marks, though these are most common; and a few are nearly indistinguishable from a normal human.

Both use the human tables for height and weight (although they tend to be slightly taller than an average human) and half-elf aging tables.

If you've got questions about character creation or the setting, feel free to ask!

    S C R E A M I N G is always a free action.

If you don't have a group that supports you - if you instead have a group that judges you - find a different group, trust me. It's not worth your life to waste it on a bunch of hyenas who serve no value to you aside from keeping you down. Everyone deserves to have a say at the table regardless of how they do it.

Ooh, set 2 has an 18 and a 9! Intriguing.

Edit: I'm leaning towards using Striker or a Spheres Ranger AT for some kind of stealthy scout type. Do you plan on allowing some Legendary Talents to be taken as Epic Feats? In particular, Dragoon Leap would be a fun thing to give.to an agile unarmed fighter, and Sword Shooter+EWP (Orcish Hornbow)= Anor Londo Greatbow Archer.

Was inspired with this one! I think she's done, except for maybe a little more shopping with that leftover 20 gp.

Spoiler: The Monster That You Saw Me For Was The Monster I Became
    Show

    Aravae, or "Ara the Serpent"
    (sheet) (theme song)
Race Half-Orc Class Dual-Blooded Sphere Sorcerer Alignment CN
    STR 15 DEX 12 CON 16 INT 11 WIS 15 CHA 18

    Spoiler: Description
    Show
Tall and imposing, the gorgeous Aravae cuts quite the figure, especially among a mercenary company of mostly rough-and-tumble individuals. With elegant features, narrow frame, and pointed ears juxtaposed by jagged tusks and the olive-green skin of wildmen, determining what, exactly, she is the scion of is not so easy. Despite her beauty and opulence, however, there is no doubt of the strength in her frame and the ferocity in her flaming eyes, a definite tell of the more wild side of this former aristocrat.

    Spoiler: Personality
    Show
While able to put on the airs of nobility and possessing a honeyed tongue able say the correct things any diplomatic situation calls for, Aravae is, for the most part, a very callous woman when she's not trying to manipulate the ear of someone that has something she needs or wants. She is self-sufficient and relies on no one, on top of having very little use for men. Though she recognizes the benefits of working with a group instead of going it alone, she does not get attached to those she works with. Especially in this bloody line of work, when death is just one mistake or misstep away, forming bonds with others in the mercenary company is something she views solely as a detriment.

She knows what she is capable of, she does not take risks, and she expects those around her to pull their own weight as she does. This leads her to being very unsympathetic and having very little tolerance for flaws in those around her - and also becoming quite cross when any of her own flaws or oddities are pointed out. Being so distant, it is very hard for others to get to know her, and she is very reticent to share any information about herself, especially anything concerning her life before joining the company.

    Spoiler: Traits/Flaws
    Show
    Noble Savage (Social)
You hail from the fringes of civilization or the bottommost strata of society, but something in your character makes that seem endearing.
Benefits: You gain a +2 trait bonus on Diplomacy and Perform checks when dealing with people of high social standing.

    Outcast’s Intuition (Magic)
You are able to sense the motives of others and use that sense to bolster your magic against dispelling.
Benefits: You gain a +1 trait bonus on Sense Motive checks, and Sense Motive is always a class skill for you. In addition, your caster level is treated as 1 level higher for the purposes of any attempts to dispel your magic.

    Outcast (Half-Orc)
Driven from town after town because of your heritage, you have become adept at living apart from others.
Benefits: You gain a +1 trait bonus on Survival skill checks, and Survival is always a class skill for you.

    Secret Shame (Drawback)
You have a terrible fear of the public at large, a group, or an important person (such as your order of knights, your liege lord, your family, or your lover) learning a shameful truth about you.
Effect(s): You take a –1 penalty on saving throws against fear effects, and the DC of any Intimidate check to demoralize you is reduced by 1. If you would normally be immune to fear, you do not take these penalties, but instead lose your immunity to fear (regardless of its source).

    Spoiler: Background
    Show
Aravae is convinced that she may be unique in the world. After all, it's not often that an orc and and elf get on together, is it? Well, that being said, her mother was only a half-elf, with the other half being human, and humans always are the adventurous sort, aren't they? She knows very little about the details of how her parents met and the circumstances surrounding her conception and birth - in fact, she never has met her father - but she knows very well the shame that her birth brought upon her mother's aristocratic family. Ara was kept a secret from the world at large, not even being given the honor of her noble family's last name, nor any credibility among the other noble houses. For all intents and purposes, she was even lower than a bastard child, nothing more than a shadow or a stain upon the family tree.

Despite this, however, Ara's mother did the best she could in raising her. Ara was given every opportunity to study academically, magically, and combatively, just as any other noble child would be. And despite the insistence of other family members that a greenskin wouldn't be able to learn anything, Ara did, in fact, master quite a bit. She learned the art of the sword as well as she learned how to write and read, and despite the taunting of older cousins, telling her that she was an ugly snake because of the color of her skin, she actually found herself embracing the jibes, if only to annoy her relatives. When she learned magic, the first thing she did was transform herself into the scary, hideous serpent that they all accused her of being. It was one thing to suffer the taunts, after all, and another entirely to own them, and make them a part of her identity. What could it hurt her, if they were telling the truth, and she didn't mind it?

She grew into a young woman there, kept inside the confines of the manor. Maybe many would consider her sheltered, but Ara became accustomed early on to the cruelties of the world against "her kind" just from within her own family. Finally, though, after much begging and cajoling, she was able to pry from her grandfather the permission to leave the manor - provided, of course, that she told no one who she really was, and that she use her shape-changing magic to make herself appear less... monstrous. Ara gladly accepted these terms, and enjoyed her newfound freedom among the wider world of the streets surrounding her home.

As there tends to be in stories of great change and tragedy... along came a boy. Ara met him while wearing her disguise, presenting herself in the form of a pretty half-elf that caught his eye immediately. One thing led to another, and in the following months... their whirlwind romance culminated in a proposal.

There was only one problem. Ara didn't want to have to spend the rest of her life lying to the man she loved. So, one evening, on a date down along the merchant streets after the shops had closed and the streets were quiet, she revealed her true form to her fiance.

It was the worst mistake she ever made in her life. When he called her a monster, and screamed, and ran away, it cut deeper than any taunt she had previously heard. That rejection twisted her heart - how dare this person who claimed he loved her change his mind, if only over her appearance? How dare he want her to be someone other than who she truly was? How dare he? She ran after him, tried to explain, tried to reason with him, but he would hear none of it.

Orcish fury combined with a twisted sense of justice and anger overtook her. But she never considered killing him to be a mistake. It was never something she regretted. Only something that she hoped would forever remain her secret. And she took it with her when she ran away that night.

The rest of the story is one anyone in the mercenary company can say. She was a woman on her own who needed a job, was skilled with both weapons and magic, and wasn't particular about the company she kept, so long as they would keep her. In fact: this is all she tells anyone when they ask her about her past, these days.

The rest, no one needs to know.

Howdy ho neighbor! I didnt expect to see a e6 spheres game, but I'm definitely not against it. I will ask for patience, though, as I haven't used the SoM system outside of a short lived solo game.

With that in mind I am currently thinking of playing a Guild Assassin Slayer who focuses on Traps and sneaking about. Thinking of making her an outcast Elf who mutilated their head to be more humanlike and to blend in, but has noticable scars because of it.

I am certainly open to the possibility. I'll take a look at that one in particular when I get home this evening.

Hm... that is fairly strong for a scout-type character, but it is quite limited in range--and has the big caveat of not working for undead, most constructs, etc. I'll allow it.
