    Default מסדר המקל

Given the popularity of the German translation thread, I figured it was about time to try my hand at a Hebrew one.

It should be noted that the right-to-leftness of the language is not the most compatible with left-to-right websites. There's a common bug: the rightmost punctuation mark in each line should appear all the way on the left. For instance, in panel 3, the first line, the period at the end should by rights appear all the way on the left, between the " and the ת. Just so you don't get confused what sentences refer to what when you try to reverse-engineer things.

    Strip #1:

    1:
    "גרררר!"

    2:
    בוינג!

    3:

Fascinating... I didn't know I had the Hebrew font installed until I saw this thread. =)

Keep posting them. Perhaps we Hebrew Illiterate can use OoTS to reverse engineer the language and gain some bonus points in our Linguistics skill. =)

So, d'ya think there are other Hebrew speaking people on Giant in the Playground?

I don't know, but learning Hebrew by reverse engineering it through OoTS scripts should prove an entertaining side activity. I may not actually have the patience to try it though, of course. =)

EDIT: My first guess... Hebrew looks to be a right-to-left reading language due to the positioning of the punctuation. Am I right about that? I guess I could look it up on Google, but it's more entertaining to try and figure it out from the text. I don't think I've ever seen anything written in Hebrew before today that I can remember. (Call me sheltered if you wish ;) )

Hebrew is right-to-left, yes, like Arabic or Japanese.

If your system supports unicode, you probably also have Klingon and Tengwar (among all sorts of useful encodings). But that is not a "font", as in installed for "Word".

I'll correct it :) I sat there for quite a while actually trying to decide between the two. I'd never played D&D in Hebrew so I don't know what the official terms are. For anything, really.

To be honest... my experience with "ad hoc" translating terms of roleplaying games (you need to do that when you only have the english books for example) it is much easier to just use the english expressions.
You tend to forget how you translated that specific phrase last time, you just do not have time and motivation to sit down and think about really appropiate terms (if a rulebook gets translated, people get paid fulltime to do that).
I'd translate really obvious stuff (as "strength", "charisma") and would not care about more complicated things ("evocation"? "aburation"? "suffocation"?... what was what again?).
So, from my experience, the easiest solution is to just keep "will save". Once you are used to that term it does not matter it is english.

... but that was not my point. My point was (and still is): if you do not have the rulebooks right now on your desk and can use them and if you do not plan to buy them to have them on your desk, it is easier and less confusing to just stick with the untranslated expression.

But keep in mind that it's really confusing to mix right to left and left to right. It might not have any impact on someone who doesn't speak hebrew but to me:

It also plays hell with how the computer prints it out. Notice how the words ended up jumbled up.

You could write "ספוט צ'ק", but, honestly...

Huh? Stick to English like... Grownups? I don't get why translating the strip is a kiddie activity... it seems like at best a service to non-English Hebrew speakers, at worst an intellectual exercise.

Grownups because kids in Israel (10 years old) has a thing for spamming hebrew all over the place. and the fact it, i am sick of it.

Now, on the other hand, if he made a "clean and rewrite" of the comic, then i would have no problem. but as he is doing it, its childish.

I don't know, I find it interesting personally. Granted, someone who only can read Hebrew probably wouldn't think to look in the forum for translations. But it's still interesting to read.

So we have Klingon? How do we get access to that? I had no idea!

Really? Link me to it or explain it to me; I've actually been wondering how in the world I'm going to do that.
