[IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
It is a nice warm summer day in Castilè Huelva. Not too hot, the temperatures allow for more revealing clothing. Many of the dock workers and sailors are already around without their upper garments. Merchants haggle on the waysides. Ships are getting unloaded. Younger children are playing amidst all of this while their older siblings are running errands for their parents. The harbor of the city is a bay surrounded by cliffs. Pulleys and goods elevators pull the merchandise towards the larger marketplaces at the cliffs. Merchants who want to avoid the fee for using the pulleys have hired help carry their wares up a sloped path. A job that requires endurance and doesn't pay particularly well.
Under this happy facade, the conflicts of the Kingdom of Iberis are hidden, but they are not hidden well. Merchants are the new and uprising class, something the old nobility of Iberis is particularly unhappy with. Both 'factions' are not in open conflict, but nobility does not accept mere commoners to join the same social events, and cling to their political influence. Meanwhile merchants are unwilling to sell to Iberian nobility, seeing as they could very well use their capital and political influence to booth them out of business.
To make matters worse, piracy has taken an upswing in the last few years, with not a week going by where a vessel wasn't fleeing from pirates or went outright missing. Rumors about Qadiran sabotage, dark elven magic destroying whole ships and even Tirnanog's fleet showing their strength are around. Plus the Gothaic army is positioning more and more troops near the Iberian border.
You lot have recently arrived in Castilé Huelva. Through some reason or another, the large trading hub has attracted your interest.
SpoilerIt is midday, the second day of the week, a normal work day. If you are not in employment and you are looking for day labor, roll d100. The higher the result, the better the work. If you are more qualified it is harder to find work (many merchants need someone to carry their stuff, not everyone needs a skilled dancer or blacksmith for a day).
If you want to shop, state what you are looking for, if you want to have fun, tell me what kind of fun you're looking for. You needn't be in the same place.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Ela is enjoying a rarity for her-a day off. Zax has been experiencing some personal turmoil, relating to the current issues, as the nobility don't want him selling to merchants and merchants don't want him selling to nobility. Seeing as Ela's race can cause problems, he told her to leave for a day or two. After stopping by the Cat's Cradle to visit Sam, only to find her away on business, Ela decided to visit the marketplace. She's got some coin to spend, but nothing she's particularly interested in buying.
She wanders the market, with a small sigh at the looks she gets. Deciding to see if anyone feels less bitter about her, she casts her gaze about.
Spoiler: OOCPerception check, seeing if anyone in the immediate area has both noticed her and is not bothered by her hobgoblin nature.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Harden has enjoyed his past few several days home after a long time at see. He has stayed in his childhood home attached to his parents seedy tavern establishment Haggard's Place. He has enjoyed swapping stories with his father, spending time with his mother, and playfully harassing his younger sister. The evenings he spends time in the taverns drinking and playing games with a variety of characters ranging from seedy to standard. Playing cards, rolling dice, tossing darts, throwing axes, arm-wrestling, and telling tall tales are all part his recent existence.
But Harden is growing restless and is looking for his next big adventure. He hopes to follow up on a lead he got from a rather drunk privateer he reveled with last night. When he was rather intoxicated as well. The details are very foggy, but he does attempt to seek out the person he was told to find in the market.
Perception: (1d20+9)[23] to notice Ela
If he does, Harden will approach her and try to strike up a harmless conversation. "Haven't I see you around here before... maybe a long time ago? My name's Harden, my family runs Haggard's place down by the docks." There is no malice in his voice and Harden is simply being friendly.
OOC:SpoilerFeel free to roll anything appropriate for me to find or remember what he would have been told the night before. Whether he can remember, whether it was true, or whether is was his drunken imagination are all, obviously, up to you.

Elum walks around the market, looking for a clothier able to provide outfits fitting his extremely flashy tastes. Haven't found anything interesting for a while,he thinks to himself. You'd think such a large trading port would have more variety; guess there's just too much big business for there to be much of a demand. Ah well, hopefully I at least meet someone to liven up the day a bit.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Sarlu walked along the wharf, irrelevant smile plastered on his face. His father had finally relented on relinquishing his allowance early and now he felt the need to spend it. Not all of it, of course. He wasn't so haphazard with money as that. He could of course go to a local tea house or a cafe or some other high society place but those tended to gouge him for his 'poor' upbringing. Silly, if you asked him, but he didn't like that scene anyways. No, he wanted something a bit more low-brow. A sailor's tavern was always a fun place to slum it; they were always full of interesting and new people to talk to. And observe. Drink and a show.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Nathanael was in the market, looking for any work for a gunsmith—or a gunman. He'd been between jobs for a while and his remaining coin was slowly running out. Part of the problem was that he had neither a license nor a workshop to ply the gunsmithing trade. In any case, gunsmithing was just something he did to keep the pot boiling between his preferred line of work. Maybe he was being too picky—he didn't want to tie himself down to a mercenary (or worse, a bodyguard) contract, let alone get involved in murder-for-hire. Another week or two without a job and he might consider the first, but he was sure he'd be damn hungry before he considered the second.

Hm? Ela says as Harden approaches. I don't come here often-not part of the city I frequent, that's all. But my master needs some space, so I decided it'd be a good time to explore more of here. I might've lived here most my life, but there's always new things to discover.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Ajax
Meets the day with and a smile, today he was off this floating death trap. His first order of business is to complete his task for Father Justice. He makes some inquiries to locate the local Remrielite Chapel and delivers the correspondence entrusted to him.
Having discharged his principle responsibility, he allows himself to relax. Realizing the difference in tension, he reprimands himself. Tense muscles are slow muscles.
He locates a suitable Inn, nothing extravagant, just a room with enough room for him to practice his forms. He practices for two hours, on board there was very little room for him to practice, and he was glad for an end to the unruly ground.
Next begins the search for a particular warehouse, a request from his mother. After a couple hours of examining merchandise, he prepares a list with quantities. He probably could have performed this tomorrow, but the task left undone would have weighed on his mind.
He shops for a bit of fresh fruit, and then retires to his room for the evening.
The next morning he greets the dawn with a proper morning practice, then he grabs so breakfast in the Inn, finishing the last of his fruit from the day before.
He locates a local barrister, spending some of his coin to begin learning the local regulations.
He goes back to the church for midday services.
In the afternoon, he goes back to his studies for several hours before retiring back to the Inn.
He eats a bland dinner, then asks about using the tub, hot water is a luxury he chooses to forgo, and he goes back to his room to practice for the hour it takes for his turn to come.
Mind, body and spirit properly worked and cleansed, he enjoys a good night's sleep.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
I've learned a lot, she starts by saying. She looks at Harden, and sees someone that reminds her of Sam. Someone friendly. Someone trustworthy. Someone she'd be willing to talk to. But as for enjoying it... Not so much. I love to learn, I love to tinker and experiment and all that. But Zax? He bought me from my family. I barely remember them-and he bought me because no one in the city would care if I died in one of his experiments. It's why I'm so talented with explosives-he had me handle the dangerous stuff.
I don't even know why I'm telling you this! she says, ranting a little bit now. I mean, for the sake of the gods, I just met you! But it's just... My family gave me away for trinkets and doo-dads, my master doesn't care if I live or die. Hell, the only person I ever felt cared is the mistress of a brothel! And hear you are, waltzing up from your cozy family, running a nice little store, with no idea what it's like! Thank every deity in the sky that I did get brought to a freaking BROTHEL when I was barely a teenager, so I could meet the one person who actually gave a damn, and, and, and...
She realizes she's shouting, and everyone is staring. I'm sorry. I am-really, she says to Harden. I don't talk about my family often. I don't get mad often. But... I guess there's a lot to unpack. I didn't mean to insult you-it's jealousy, really. I hope you and your family live long and happy lives, she says, feeling ashamed.I have a LOT of Homebrew!

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Daisy came in on the Blushing Maiden last night. She pulled guard duty, so she slept in late in her hammock today, and the sun has been up for hours. Now, she is taking a slow stroll through the streets, letting her stomach lead her in the direction of some of her favorite eating spots. It was a rough journey this time, but "rough work makes the purse heavy", and tonight she is going to drink like a fish.
She strolls through the markets, munching on a baked, breaded herring, looking at trinkets and knickknacks, not looking for anything in particular. She barely glances at the purses of passing merchants, but she does glance hungrily at any stout halfling lads she comes across.
"I should stroll by the better houses later", she muses to herself. "It can't hurt to take a look". She pads hert sash to reassure herself that her lockpicks - and her sword - are in place.Semper ludens.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Ela:
Of course people would know Zax' odd "pet" or apprentice. You do pull some strange looks, but many of the regulars know you already. That way, you can get typical local food comfortably. There's a Qadiran merchant with exotic spices, powders in almost all colors of the rainbow. Dark green, bright orange, red, brown, black. You notice a few more marked flasks behind the usual spices. Mandrake roots, powdered unicorn horn, pixie dust, and similar stuffs are peeking out, but require a healthier budget. With the basic stuffs you get everywhere you can only do your extracts, which have to adjusted to your own biological makeup, and which perish all too quickly.
Harden:
It is still early and it is incredibly boring in all but the most expensive of locales. Whoever found a job is out working while the many who where not so lucky sit in front of a single pint of ale for HOURS to try and stretch the buzz. His head hurts a bit. He might have knocked someone out with a headbutt. He might have drunk too much. Or maybe he was in a underground fighting ring? He does not recall. But he does recall one word. Sparrow.
Nathanael:
He finds a gun powder mill just outside the city borders. The complex is dug into an artifical basin to control any damage due to explosions relatively under control. Powder is still a relatively new invention, brought over from foreign shores, and not yet fully understood. Nathanael is almost rejected at the doors, but if he is willing, he can do a few repairs around town. Mainly small stuff, but he is called to a few smaller customers, merchants simply interested in keeping their valuables safe from bandits, but his last customer of his very short list is a certain Zax, a reknown artificer. You assume he is simply too busy to maintain his own guns.
Ajax:
After your first night in Castile, and your contacts properly satisfied, you have a breakfast of simple white bread, seafood and a thin but sweet ale. Before Ajax manages to exit the inn, the barkeep gives him a small envelope. As you open it, you can read the following:
If you are interested in saving this country,
meet me at dawn at the old wharf. Be prepared for a dangerous night out.
We pay well.
So long, Sparrow.
The short letter is sealed with a purple lion.
Daisy:
Daisy checks the passerbys, and their purses seem smaller than before. Maybe the problems that his Iberis are noticable. But you haven't seen this many EMPTY purses, while the purses of merchants were also relatively empty, only to make space for opulent rings, fine clothes and even fatter bellies. If you want to make bank tonight, you should find an affluent merchant and rob him. After you return you see quite a fancy fellah sitting in the taproom of the bar.
Elum:
Of course you find many styles of clothes in this fine city. You look rich enough so even more tailors promise you they can change their outfits or make completely new ones. You see many elegant types of cloth: satin, treant cotton, Tirnanogian dreamspider silk, wyvern leather. Made into anything modern and extravagant, between fashionable and extremely tacky.
If you want to spend an afternoon and a few gold coins you will get almost anything you request. If you dare want to get "cheap" service anywhere, you'll probably be kicked out. Most poor people buy the cloth themselves and stitch their stuff together themselves. Or they - like most sailors - just look like they haven't changed their clothes for 6 months.
Sarlu:
Most tea houses are little shows of make-believe. In an odd paradox, you are invited to many free courses and drinks when you're affluent, and almost kicked out when you're not. So you stumble into a small bar named the Blushing Maiden, and order a tea. After the barkeep looks at you funny, you decide to switch to an ale instead. If you want a glass of water, you'd think you'll pass after you've seen which what kind of cloth they barkeep "cleans" the place. Shortly after you've arrived you see a halfling arrive. She seizes you up with a look, not particularly aggressive, but one of a professional. She looks out of place here too.Last edited by Spore; 2020-01-16 at 04:42 AM.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Harden is neither upset not surprised by Ela's response. He would be the first to admit he a great life growing. And he is very thankful for it. A few years ago, he was ashamed of it in fact. But he learned that he can't be angry at himself or his parents for things he had no control over.
"Ela, thanks for sharing. You're right, my family is great. Though, they never meet a stranger. You should stop by sometime. Whether I am there or not, they'll treat you like family. I'll be the first to admit I don't really deserve them. Hell, they like to say I do my best to go out and get myself killed just to avoid spending time with them. In fact, my mom was really angry when I cam home like this." Harden points to the large scar and eye patch covering his mangled left eye. "Had I not been in such bad shape, she would have probably killed me." Harden realize's he probably the one oversharing now and tries to rein things back in.
"Anyway, I'm looking for the Sparrow. Or a Sparrow. Or maybe a place called the Sparrow. I might have... ok, I did have too much to drink last night... and I'm not sure what I"m looking for. Any suggestions?"

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Ajax
Curious, I wonder if this is a test or task from the Father. No, not from him, he would have known I would not need baiting with gold. Perhaps an associate of mother? Seems unlikely. I will have to inquire when I meet this Sparrow. There is no question in his mind on whether to go or not, only how to best prepare.
He will spend some time scouting the terrain, re-checking his gear, and getting to sleep early. He plans to be at the meeting spot at least an hour before the ordained time.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
"Excuse me, you know where I can find the artificer, Zax?" Nathanael asked the first passerby he saw when he got down to the bottom of his list.
Spoiler: Appearance and Mannerisms
A handsome young man, fair-skinned, tall and thin, with chestnut brown hair starting to grow moppish, and grey-green eyes. He's clean-shaven, and dressed in well-fitting and aesthetically chosen but rugged and unpretentious traveling clothes. The musket slung over his shoulder and the pistol holstered at his hip are robust and well-maintained, albeit plain weapons. Sharp-eyed observers will also note the mail shirt and dagger under his jacket.
Carries himself with confidence, all easy smiles, with the ingratiating demeanor of a man looking for work. He also stays wary and observant between chatting up the passerby—he is after all a lone traveler in a new city.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
"Hey there, long fellow". The pretty young halfling lass pats Sarlu on the knee. She is wearing loose breeches, a rough cloth shirt, and a colorful red sash, where the hilt of a sword and a pair of pistols protrudes; she has the look of an armed sailor about her - or a pirate. "Help a lady up on the stool?".
Between Sarlu's help and her own athleticism, the halfling manages to climb the bar stool. "Name's Daisy", she beams at him, and reaches out both hands to shake his vigorously. "Barkeep! Ale for me".
Also, she tries to steal Sarlu's purse. Perception check vs my Sleight of hand of 17 - I didn't manage to get it, but did you notice?Last edited by CasualViking; 2020-01-17 at 01:01 AM.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Harden smiles and Ela and embraces her. "Of course.". When the embrace is over he smiles as he accepts her help. "Any help I can get finding this Sparrow would be greatly appreciated."
Description: Harden is a large and powerfully built half-orc. He is charismatic and engaging, but his physique and missing eye make him quite the intimidating figure. His time in the bar and the ship allowed him to learn how to talk to people, and more importantly, how to make them listen. He is fine swordsman and quite competent with most aspects of a ship.

Nodding, Ela says Well, might as well ask about.
She goes from person to person, asking about this "Sparrow". She's perfectly happy to lean on them a little, reminding them of anything Zax has done for them, or just tantalizing them with the thought of getting in his good graces for cheaper prices and better goods in exchange for information.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Sarlu had, at first, not spotted the source of the little feminine voice. With a gracious smile, he proffered a single hand with a limp wrist, providing the absolute bare minimum assistance in helping the halfling to the adjacent stool. He observed the woman as she settled into the seat and called to the barkeep. He hid a bemused smile behind his mug. Salutations Daisy. You can call me Sarlu. He cast his gaze askance at the regular clientele of the establishment before resting on Daisy again. I must say, you have an eye for finding the sore thumb. Or being one. Why, pray tell, is a sailor like yourself here and not one of the rowdy taverns dockside?
Spoiler: Appearence and MannerismsSarlu is always dressed in fine clothing; silks, expensive and exotic leathers with intricate designs in fabulous colors. It is no secret he comes from wealth though there is a clear distinction from noble inheritance and his family's self-made riches. Currently, he is in a darkly dyed traveling cloak that sits fashionably across one shoulder, letting his well tailored vest and red silken undershirt shine through. He is bedecked in small pieces of jewelry; a pair of topaz rings on each pinkie finger, a pendant inset with a ruby clutched by a silver claw (his father's company logo), single stud diamond earrings in each earlobe, several bracelets and bangles of shiny precious metals. Even the buttons on his vest are polished imported ivory.
Sarlu holds himself with a dignified, self-important air. He feels himself detached from the world, a mere observer and not one to deign interact with it unless forced to. He lives to experience life, not live it. He is fastidious about his appearance, always taking pains to keep himself looking sharp and proper. His movement's are slow, precise and purposeful. His voice carries a perpetual lilt of disinterest and slight derision.
Basically, you'd probably want to punch his face in after 5 minutes with him.Awesome Avvy by Sizlord!

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Elum orders a custom outfit in clashing red and blue before heading out of the shop.
Spoiler: Appearance and Mannerisms
Elum always stands out in a crowd, between his bright-red hair and eccentric wardrobe. Elum prefers thin silks of bright and often incongruous colors, making little effort to hide his physique. The lower body of his garmet is often covered in tassels, ribbons, and other flowing adornments, even off-stage.
Elum craves excitement and animatedly talks to almost anyone he passes by, though ultimately finds many passerby to be "boring". He does have a kind streak, however, and will jubilantly come to the aid of anyone in need.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Nathanael:
His office is close to the cliffside of the pulleys. But you might as well talk to his assistant. I think she is running around, asking people about some bird. Very weird thing. a passing dockworker mentions.
Daisy & Sarlu:
Daisy targets his purse which the noble man keeps just out of reach. As Sarlu reacts to the sudden touching of his knees with his hand, Daisy takes her chance and strips him of one of his looser bracelets, which she palms.
SpoilerIt is up to Sarlu to notice that but not with a roll this poor. :)
Ela & Harden:
You really struggle to get any information about something with so little information and with a broad term such as 'sparrow'. Some tell you this could be a ship's name. Others mention it could be an endearing name for someone's wife. It could be a surname, or along the more paranoid even a code for secret agents of the Black Blade. Regardless, most of the more solid tips point towards the docks. The barkeeps and dockworkers there should know many of the people that come to Castile.
Spoiler: Black BladeThe Black Blade is a rumored union of royal assassins that deter any and all attacks against Iberis. If some foreign warlord decides to finally advance towards Iberis, his tragic death is very much on the tables.
Elum:
The tailor is very much enjoying his job. He takes his measurements, happy to have a more adventurous customer for once. He has a few ideas of his own but struggles to come up with an idea with as little cloth as you have in mind. One time he jokingly mentions you should just get a jersey under your chainmail and a loincloth, maybe boots. He then asks where to deliver it to.
As you step outside, you find a half-orc and hobgoblin running around, even asking you of something about a sparrow. You vaguely recall someone flirting to you last night, inviting you to the 'sparrow's nest'.
SpoilerI'm no stickler for realistic armor, but chainmail bikinis leave little to no variety in describing glancing blows. Also I feel there is no armor less sexy than a chainmail. What do you have in mind then.
Ajax:
As you check the terrain, you see a abandoned warehouse, that is still very much lived in. A few beautiful women are chatting in front of the cabins, seemingly bored out of their mind. They are heavily flirting with any men (and a few women) that pass by. It is on the side of the harbor, one of the last houses before the cliffs. Apparently as trading through Iberian routes via ship became too dangerous, the shipping companies abandoned quite a few docks and warehouses, starting with the one closest to the life endangering rocks. It now serves as additional low quality housing, and if you trust your senses, as some kind of make-shift brothel.

Re: [IC] Gunpowder and Galleons: a Pathfinder Story.
Elum turns to the hobgoblin and half-orc. A sparrow? Can't say I know anything about... Actually, someone invited me to a "sparrow's nest" last night. A terrible bore at that, no wonder I couldn't remember at first. Anyway, how'd you hear about it?
OOC:
SpoilerApologies for the confusion. Any comments I made regarding Elum's outfit refer only to clothes, not armor. His chainmail is completely normal, he's just not wearing it right now because he doesn't see the need to in the marketplace.

Does that sound right, Harden? Ela asks. I mean, it's the best lead we've gotten so far. Thank you, sir.

Actually, mind if I join you? I just finished shopping and could use some excitement.

Harden smiles to Ela. "More than I had when I got here... care to accompany me to the docks?" With that he will head to the docks and ask about the Sparrow there.
